I have a lot of records but i don't collect records. I just like to listen to music. I never sold them when CD's came along, instead i bought even more since they were cheap. Instead of buying one CD i could, in the 90's, buy 10 records on vinyl. I don't care if a record costs 100 dollars or 1 dollar if the music is good i buy it and play it.

5 underpriced amazing records I would add to your recommendations:
Doctors of Madness - Late Night Movies, All Night Brainstorms (Polydor, 1976)
Be Bop Deluxe - Axe Victim (Harvest, 1974)
Blue Oyster Cult - Secret Treaties (Columbia, 1974)
Tangerine Dream - Rubycon (Virgin, 1975)
Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends - S/T (Cotillion, 1970)

I love Cosmic Messenger! A friend of mine who was into proggy stuff from the 70's had that on CD and played it at a party and I loved it. It's worth pointing out, Jean-Luc Ponty was on some HUGE Zappa records: Hot Rats, Over-Nite Sensation and Apostrophe! I love how his violin sounds like searing guitar solos on Cosmic Messenger. I think I paid $3 for my copy, too.

I love all your videos, but my favorites are the ones where you rattle off all of these amazing albums that I probably never would have discovered on my own. Thanks for the music!
One of my recommendations: A current NYC-based punkish/funkish band called The 1865, with an album called "Don't Tread on We." I saw it in a used bin and bought it based just on the cover art, titles, and hype sticker. Love it!

Great video, Dillon. Never heard most of the mentioned records, time to get digging.
And I have recommendation of my own - Mingo Lewis - Flight Never Ending, face-melting cosmic jazz-fusion, mostly instrumental. The only solo album by talented percussionist Mingo Lewis, who played with Santana on Caravanserai and Love Devotion Surrender and with Al Di Meola on many albums. Just 10-20 dollars on Discogs, even promo copies are super cheap

Frost Music is a killer psych rekkid! Dick Wagner before he was playing on Alice Cooper and Lou Reed albums. "Stand In The Shadows" is one of my favorite psych guitar solos. I actually have the second Frost LP on the turntable right now.
Dylan, as someone who has been on the hunt for music for decades, how many times have you bought an album everyone was overlooking for cheap, only to have it catch on and shoot up in price years later?

Lot of classic rock/early metal is reasonably priced. The Floyd, Who, Zep, etc albums are pricey, but if you take a short step down in popularity - BOC, Alice Cooper, Montrose, etc - you get albums that are just as good, but regularly in the $10-$15 range.
You covered a lot of blues rock like Harvey Mandel. A ton of that stuff is great and can be had for cheap - Robin Trower, Rory Gallagher, Pat Travers, etc.
70s Jazz fusion like the Billy Cobham and JLP you mentioned also tends to be cheap. Tons of great stuff from Stanley Clarke, Passport, Tony Williams, etc.
And the slightly less popular funk bands can be had for good prices. You mentioned Lakeside and Mandrill. War, early Commodores, EW&F, BT Express, Cameo. There are so many, and their records can usually be had at really reasonable prices.

  • @lupcokotevski2907

Yep in Australia most of those records would be significantly more. Tolonen was a prodigy and also was an excellent pianist - he recored that album aged 19. The Yvonne Fair album is great - it is just as cheap in Australia. The title track of Harvey Mandel's album was clearly an influence on Dark Side of the Moon, although it was written by jazzman Duke Pearson in the early 60's. Bowie was listening to Mandel's album whrn he was writing Hunky Dory. Of course, Ponty and Cobham are giants of fusion. Cobham played with Mahavishnu Orchestra until Narada Michael Walden took over, who then went on to write for and produce Whitney Houston.

The older I get the less I am listening to guitar driven rock. Almost all of my rare rock hardly gets played. I listen to to a lot of stuff that is easy on the ears or something to chill to. You should make a list that is out of the ordinary. Like great sounding Reader Digest box sets or nice elevator music. No, I am not joking. Once people listen to it they find that they like it. Just my opinion. And yes, a lot of Readers digest box sets are very high quality vinyl pressings.

Get the Tolonen album. It is hard to describe, all instrumental with sax, harpsicord, straight guitar. Only one real rocker the last song on the album recorded live. Great listening record that has really stood the test of time.

@@cliffordsalmon6342 I have it. Yes, the cover makes one think it is hard rock but it really isn't. I have the original with the dark red barely translucent vinyl.

I recommend ECM titles. Always under $20 and a great sounding label to get into!

I'd add all of Little Feat when Lowell George was there. Seeing these 20 and below seems criminal.

Yeah I almost added Lowell’s solo LP.

Already purchased 4 of the suggestions.... So maybe the title should be records that used to be cheap until I made this video.
