Great choice of records 👍 led Zeppelin first with turquoise is a big grail for a lot of people....had mine for many years now.
So many albums on that list, but just one off the top, the original pressing of the Dead Kennedys Frankenchrist with the Winston Smith poster. That'd be a grail album.
Nice, Piper at the Gates and Danzig one are two of the very most incredible albums of all time.
Bought my copy of “Maggot Brain” in 1971. It is the “Unipak” album cover. It is in excellent condition, both the pressing and cover. Glad to hear of its value. It has been played on good equipment over the years thank goodness. It’s one of those that I played on certain occasions.
FARM! I lived in Mt. Vernon 1976-1983. They had come and gone before I lived there. They are still the pride of Mt. Vernon. I used to jam with drummer Mike Young and have met their other members way back then. I still regularly talk to people who are friends with the guys, and it was a great suprise to see their album on your list. The record shows up at the local record store (located in the building that once housed Red Fenton's music store, the store that George Harrison bought his first Gretsch guitar from in 1962). They recently had a vg+ to M- copy that they sold to one of their friends for $30.
Constantly discovering new (to me) music from your videos. Amazing work, Thanks!
love that you mentioned cold fact that and coming back from reality are 2 of my fave albums ever!
I am so glad you showed that Randy Holden album. I've been going through a recent collection I just purchased and remember coming across that one and just pushing it it off to the side. Definitely going to have to dig it back out!
Court of the crimson king was one of my favorites back in the 70’s. I played mine so much my mother gave me crap about it. Great album!
Morning Dillion, great way to start my Sunday morning, coffee & a top 20 list of rare LP’s. Lucky me, I have the MC5, Zeppelin II & the King Crimson original pressings from my youth. Since I grew up listening to classic rock, I bought them & kept them together all thru decades. Also saw MC5 twice, live in concert at the Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino, Ca.
Wow that’s amazing!
@@noblerecords I know, right? I might be getting kinda old (70), but I witnessed so many fantastic rock concerts in person. Plus back then, we could get right next to the stage, within 5 to 10 feet of the band.
@@jwwj30 hey 70 is the new 50.
Great video as usual👍 On a personal note....went to a local record show yesterday and picked up one of my holy grails that I have been looking for now for almost 4 years.....the self titled original US pressing of a band called Glass Harp. This album and band were truly amazing and have never seen one in the wild! The best thing was I was getting ready to leave the show with my bag in hand and noticed a dealer tucked away in the corner that I had not seen....was already WELL over my budget for the day but bit the bullet and paid a pretty penny for this masterpiece! Keep up the great work with your channel👍
Phil Keggy was 9 fingered guitarist. He eventually went Christian rock.
Channels like yours have become a source of finding new material to listen to.
Just got done listening to the Fraction album via Tidal..... Wow, love it !!!
Liked and Subscribed, looking forward to listening too more of your suggestions.
As an Alice Cooper collector living in London some of my holy grail records are the Record Store Day Live From The Astroturf, Alice Cooper singles & LP's from Good Records in Dallas. I have become friends with Christopher Todd Penn & met him in the UK a few times with Dennis Dunaway & Cindy Smith Dunaway. The Live From The Astroturf, Alice Cooper movie has had 3 screenings in the UK. I own 2 Willy Wonka split pink/white vinyl singles & 2 Willy Wonka split pink/white vinyl LP's. Also a Confetti LP as well as all the other single & LP pressings.
Great record collection! I'm always interested in learning about new rare Psych records which were in the past (for us collectors who started in the 70s and 80s, were not well known about). That said, I'm glad to have started collecting when I did, when I see the prices of many of the 60s albums that are now considered to be "grails". Still so much yet to discover though! The internet has made awareness of and availability of so many rare Psych records possible now! Even young folks collecting 80s stuff, are interested in really cool stuff now (often not realizing that those bands were not what most people were listening to at the time, which actually was mostly mediocre top 40 then).
Couldn't agree more. I have an easier time now getting great reissues of psyche that I could never own otherwise. Plus today's reissues get cleaned up with Sonic Solutions software and are actually listenable. I have pre 2000 psyche compilations on good labels (sundazed etc) that are unlistenable. Nuggets era compilations no longer cut it!
@@danielrhoden2973 isn’t Sonic Solutions the dreaded digital “no noise” processing? :o
@@Ross1966 Yep. And most of the psyche compilations I own from the pre SS era are unlistenable without it.
Great video as always. Love oddessy & Oracle. I'd love to find a new copy of Bee Gees 1st. I also have an original Court of the Crimson King.
My mom found a BB King gospel record at a thrift shop. It was with about 20 original Donovan and Bob Dylan records etc. 10c each she bought a shopping cart full. The BB King record is red like the gospel/Hawaiian records from the late 40s early 50s.
Enjoyed this.... sound advice on going after stuff you actually enjoy playing. Still a few in this list that were new to me which is always great.
Dude - thanks so much for your channel! Your enthusiasm and knowledge is incredible - and has helped me find new gems after nearly 50 years of collecting. Unfortunately, like many others, I sold a big chunk of my collection at one time. One album I got rid of that is my present holy grail is Love - Forever Changes - the original 1st press mono. Not even because of value as much as it’s one of my top desert island LPs!
Same.i painted my own cover for it as my copy had none
I'd forgotten about that! "The Everlasting First" with Jimi on lead guitar.....
Hey, I saw your post on Facebook and I wanted to let you know that I have some Ethiopian vinyl music that I'm looking to sell. Would you be interested in buying it from me ?
Hank Mobley OG Soul Station wow yours look awesome that’s definitely my most wanted grail love you choice love to find that Lee Morgan Cooker is another one👍 .Lovellandrew
I’ve got quite a few of the albums you’ve shown, that I got as they came out in the U.K. So great that you guys still value this great music and the albums are still loved by younger people, there’s a lot of albums I have that maybe valuable, but I will not ever part with them and they will be passed on to my kids in my will! My 2 boys love 60’s and 70’s music they will treasure them as well and for future generations! You should mention the 2 great Jeff Beck albums, Truth and Beck-Ola albums, both are some of the best rock music of the late 1960’s imo!
Awesome! Thanks for watching! 🙏
Cold Fact is a great pick! Glad to see it in this video.
Thank you for sharing! I really enjoy your program!
Thanks for watching! 🙏
Greetings from the UK and thanks for a most interesting and enjoyable video. One of my all-time favourite bands is Little Feat and in my vinyl collection I have a couple of the Feat's bootlegs you might be familiar with - "Aurora Backseat" (live in 1973) and "Rampant Synchopatio" (live in 1976). Also have a Capitol Records triple vinyl set of three classic albums (STCR-288, open ended box cover): Steve Miller, "Sailor"; The Band, "Music From Big Pink"; Quicksilver Messenger Service, "QSM". One more to mention is the 3-LP box set, "Fillmore - The Last Days" (Columbia, 1972) - complete with the colour brochure, poster and repro concert ticket. (Not sure if this last one is all that rare). All excellent albums, though, and a few highlights from my collection.
P.S. - forgot to say I only have 5 of the 20 albums you showed (Miles Davis, King Crimson, Black Sabbath (MOR), Led Zep II, Floyd). I do have stuff by Nick Drake and Funkadelic but not the two you mentioned.
MY ALL time favorite album I WISHHH I could find is Original Death Roadrunner Symbolic 1995 Album iddddd Cry to just hold it in my hands even If i can't get it
Or Megadeth 1992 Burbank California Countdown To Extinction Album
In 67 I had a mono version of Traffic's Mr Fantasy, bought in error for the stereo. The b side label was blank white instead of pink. It went missing with a box of LP's when I moved house. I curse the removal company even now, nearly 20 years later.
Got the same VU&Nico
Set up as you except my original pressing had the top of the banana but the last 3/4ths of the banana sticker is gone, usually it’s the inverse. I have a bulk of these gems and am glad I bought them in the early mid 00s,
Stay GRoOovy record collectors!
Great video. I managed to get originals of Rockadrome and Plastic Cloud and a sealed copy of the Big Star album you showed. Great bands, all.
Wow! Nice!!!
Great video. The Rodriguez album is definitely on my grail list as well. Recently picked up a solid repress in the meantime.
Would also add Townes Van Zandt - The Late Great Townes Van Zandt on Poppy to the conversation. Tough to find a nice original for a reasonable price.
Yeah all Townes stuff is tough to find
Great video. Some of these I have, some I wish I had. My biggest grail is an original copy of Peter Grudzien’s The Unicorn
I have Led Zeppelin II on Angus label, I think it’s 1970 Singapore press, and just been recently added to Discogs as unofficial release. I found it in a bootfair and took to record shop once for a valuation but because it had deep scratch and skip on Whotta Lotta Love it was valued only £30. Another one is Miles Davis Kind Of Blue mono 1961 repress I found in a charity shop alongside few other mono 60’s represses like Thelonious Monk (vol 1+2) I think they were £5 a pop but now worth in hundred + pounds and they are in great condition. These finds are priceless for me because of a memory of a time and place where they were found.
My father in law gave me his records recently. I was surprised to see Zeppelin II RL Monarch in his collection. It is in decent condition and sounds great! Love your videos Dillon.
Awesome!!!! Thanks so much!
I have a zep II RL, super clean. I juat spun it over the other night, amazing. My cover is not as nice, but i was told that after the recall, some of released inferior masters used the same cover. If true, i would love to search for it.
I did have another copy with same catalog numbers on the cover, but it wasnt a match.
I have over 20 different pressings of In The Court Of The Crimson King, including all 4 pink Island variants, and the best sounding one is the first German press, IMO.
Becaude all polygram records were pressed by Deutsche grammophone wich Is the best of the best
Only 20?!
Lightweight.
Tell me you’re a middle aged man with too much disposable income without telling me …
I have that promo Big Star, along with the originals of their next two albums. I also have the Safe as Milk and the Catch a Fire. One album which may have deserved a mention is the Alexander "Skip" Spence LP, 'Oar', which is very hard to find a good copy of, as only approx 1000 were sold upon it's release. I have a pristine copy of it, which is my most expensive album.
Boy!! That Was Fun Seeing You Show Those Records...Great!!! I Think I Mentioned, That I Did Find " Changes" by Catapilla from 1972... Very Surprised.... I remember You Played Their First in The Shop.. Both So good... Thanks my Friend..
Wow! Amazing find!
Awe to get some of these recommendations! I just started collecting, not long ago. Either way I’ll be listening to these albums, as I’ll not likely find them on vinyl
i am new to vinyl and just started my collection, thanks for sharing
Dark - Round the edges original colour gatefold. Hope to find it in a junk shop for peanuts! Being more realistic McChurch soundroom - Delusion.
Cool list! Several of these bands I've never heard before. I'll give them a digital listen before I start shopping around for the vinyl copies.
Yes! Good plan!
Nice records! Thanks!
Back in the late 70s, buying some used vinyl in a shop in town took a chance on a album ,turned out to be a favorite for life ,fat mattress, check it out .might be hard to find.
Superb amazing collection.
Number one grail of mine was the Residents' "Santa Dog", an original 1972 pressing of the double 7-inch. I was able to find a copy last year with the sleeve and, as a plus, it was one of the few where the inside gatefold wasn't torn up. The actual singles are in great condition as well.
Incredible!
Just recently got a copy of Odyssey and Oracle (reissue of course) after someone told me my music reminded them of that album.
Btw Pink Moon is hands down my all time holy grail wish list.
I have Maggot Brain in Quad.. also the Rolling Stones promo lp from 1969.. as well as the early dj promo 7" of velvet undergrounds first release.
Great records Dillion, few of those I have yet to find, someday!
Thanks Bob! I’m sure you will! You always find good stuff!
Excellent selection 😊
I have a 1958 vinyl 1st pressing of the 1st
Ritchie Valens record, with the blue label & black writing.
A friend of mine found a copy of Ory's Creole Trombone (look it up on wikipedia). He paid $2 for it at a thrift store, his is one of the super rare ones that have the Nordskog label and not covered over by the Sunshine label. Amazing find in a thrift store.
Great choices Dillon love your taste picks and insight
Thanks so much!
I have an original Canadian pressing of, In The Court Of The Crimson King I got at age 10 in 1974 . It has a unique non gloss textured album cover which makes the artwork stand out and also has the band name and title on the cover with the solid red Atlantic label. Its in "good+" condition . I have a few original rare gems in a free 1960's to 80's 400+ collection I acquired in 2002. The Mule Skinner Blues. West Coast Pop Art Band vol 2. Strawberry Alarm Clock Wake Up Its Tomorrow, all in near mint condition. Id love to find that 13th Floor Elevators LP.
My awesome find was found at Goodwill. It is a OG white label promo of Halfnelson. The same year of release, Halfnelson changed their band name to Sparks.
That’s awesome! Hope you bought a lotto ticket after that 🤣
Thanks Dylan awesome podcast buddy
That Fraction records blows my mind on a regular basis, and I have you to thank you for it!!!
It's decent.. but to me, it's still just a Morrison kinda copy, just with more of a modern physcodelic style of the time. Garage rock of course.
I started buying records with the Vertigo label about 1970 and never found one I didn't like. I still have all of them in pristine condition. From Black Sabbath's first album to Kraftwerk to Rameses & his wife Sel. Unfortunately, the local record store quit carrying them about 1974. I haven't actually played any of those albums in over 30 years.
@@adz693 Unfortunately, I don't have any of those; I was buying what the record store (Rare Records) in Glendale, California carried and I don't recall seeing any of those three albums.
This is my list for sure. Great video.
Thanks for watching! 🙏
Introducing Kenny Burrell deep groove Blue Note circa 1956 I believe. Paid $5. Water damaged cover but the
Record is Immaculate and plays wonderfully. Also have Maggot Brains and RL Led Zeppelin II
Some cool albums you got there. I wasn’t able to see the Sabbath Masters of Reality album. Is it the very original first U K press that was the flip top box cover? As far as the poster goes. The US one is a four panel poster and the UK one is a larger six panel one. That being said, I’ve seen them both side by side and it looks they just enlarged the picture for the bigger poster. The resolution on the US copy is much better. I have about half of the albums you showed. I have the uncensored MC5 on the gold Elektra label with the John Sinclair liner notes. One grail that I thought you might mention was the Alice Cooper love it to death thumb cover on the Straight label. Also, a bit obvious, but Zeppelin 1 with turquoise letters or UK Electric Ladyland with the blue letters. Oh and apparently the leafhound album growers of mushrooms is going for some crazy numbers.
Cheers.
Love the channel man. Just curious why you hadn’t mentioned the current in print all analog reissues of some of the records in this video. I think it would help to inform the viewers that great all analog versions of these records are readily available if they weren’t aware.
- John Coltrane “A Love Supreme” via Impulse Acoustic Sounds Series/Cut by Ryan K. Smith
- Sonny Rollins “Saxophone Colossus” via Analogue Productions Prestige Mono Series/Cut by Kevin Gray
- Big Star “#1” via Craft Recordings/Cut by Jeff Powell
- Hank Mobley “Soul Station” via Blue Note Classic Series/Cut by Kevin Gray
- Lee Morgan “The Cooker” via Blue Note Tone Poets/Cut by Kevin Gray
My thoughts exactly. I have all of those jazz reissues and they sound fantastic. And far cheaper than OG.
I have recently came across two early 1950’s Elvis Presley albums. Found them hidden in my house that I purchased new in 2003. Have no idea how they got there. The sleeves have a little water damage but the albums themselves appear to never been on a phonograph, appears to be no scratches at all!
I've been getting into jazz, funk and hip hop a lot lately, gotta save some money to get some new albums, would love to get some Funkadelic, Maggot Brain, the self titled and Free Your Mind are legendary stuff
These records need to be seen on a regular basis, luckily there's someone to show them!
Haha thanks!
I have King Crimson -- In the Court of the Crimson King, but I think it has the red polidor label. So pretty common. However, I love this album.
@17:40 - It still blows my mind that the US release of Piper was issued without either Astronomy Domine or Flaming. I can see taking Bike or any other silly Syd song off to fit See Emily Play on, but not those two. Especially Astronomy.
Truth. Could've taken out either of the weakest 3 songs---The Gnome, Chapter 24, and Scarecrow. Taking out Astronomy Domine is just pure sacrilege.
Keep on the look out for:
Punch label- 1009 - The Henchmen- Please tell me
Hideout label - 1236 - The Bottle Company- Berkley square
Hey Dillion, I recently picked up a copy of Beatles Revolver. I guess it's what you would call a misspress. Side one is as it should be but side two is the band America the first track being I Need You. Worth anything to a collector? Thanks!
Like a lot of people I too sold the majority of my collection years ago now I spend a considerable amount of time trying to find my soul. I doubt I’ll ever find the original press of Mike Tay and the Scrotums Live at the YAP Club. It’s the pressing banned in the states with 2 pigs doing it on the back cover and Byron Vernon Feist on drums…the original drummer.
Even been over to Europe in search of it to no avail but the journey continues.
Love your listings 🎸
The MC5 Kick out the jams original I have from when it was released. love it.
That's for the class/ education. Big Star has been on my list for 25+ years. Just to listen if not to own.
Now I want to hear the FARM album as well.
VU with nico was issued in germany, with the original usa unretouched gatefold, peelable sleeve. Series number stickered over with code stereo 710 004. Worth checking out!
Hi Dillon, I really got into funk & jazz in the 70's. Gato Barbieri, David Sanborn, Chick Corea, Stanley Clark, Lenny White, Tower of Power, But I really enjoyed Brothers Johnson, Bootsy, Dr. Funkenstien. I have been keeping all these old records in a storage locker for the past 12 years. Would you think any of these 1970's funk and jazz albums are collector items? Thanks for your time.
Rob
I've got Led Zeppelin II. The cover is pretty beat up because I played the crap out of it, but no scratches on the vinyl. Then my daughter bought me the re-release that has some added stuff.
My holy grail record is Barbed Wire Sandwich by Black Cat Bones. I have many of the ones you posted, but reissues. Amazing collection you have!!!
That’s been on my grail list for awhile lost bids on eBay many times good luck in getting one
Oh yeah that’s a favorite! I have an OG UK. Phenomenal!
Farm was recorded at Golden Voice Studios of Pekin IL, who also recorded Head East, Styx, and Starcastle.
My friend Ed Howard helped Jerry build his echo chamber.
The 2x45 DMM pressing on Music For Nations of Ride the Lightning is my favorite copy of the album
I have a couple of those on your list. Several in another pressing or lable. Seems all the albums I really want are very hard to find and go for a mint.
Awesome video! Unbelievable grails!!! I guess the “RL” is a given huh? Well, I would like an OG UK Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Then, if the list can go on a bit, I would like an OG “Bryter Layter”, UK 1st pressing of “Diary of a Madman”, The 1st pressing of the Doors in Mono pressed in LA, JiMi Hendrix “Electric Ladyland” UK first pressing with that interesting cover, Vangelis Blade Runner Soundtrack (Red vinyl), and then the “Bozzio Levin Stevens” by Bozzio Levin Stevens supergroup. My Dad just went to the Banana Records warehouse and store in Florida, and couldn’t find that last one. I just don’t ever see it. Hey Dillion, sent you an email. Just an FYI about a new release. Peace!
Glad you didn’t blow up my holy grail blues album! Maybe you have it. I just realized you’re in NC! I live in Pittsboro. I’ll get over to the store soon and if you have a good copy of “goin away” Lightnin Hopkins set it aside for me! Cheers-Ryan
You included my grail … Catch a Fire on island (or tuff gong) with the flip back zippo.
Was expecting to see the butch cover on the list.
Thanks for sharing :)
I meant to say butcher but forgot! 😅
I've nothing to say on your picks. Pretty much nailed it.
Interesting picks. Funny don't have all on vinyl but do have digital on all but Danzig and Metallica. Like your tastes in music and your enthusiasm.
I loved the MC5 and have that album.
So good!
Nice one Dillon. Most of those are pretty spot on. One that would come to mind immediately for me is Can Ege Bamyasi. It seemed, at least for a while, everyone was looking for that one. I got a decent price for maggot brain a few years ago, wish I would have bit the bullet and got a better copy back then before they skyrocketed. I could say that for a lot of records though. I traded an original Manduka record for Nick Drake Pink Moon US first press. Sort of regret it though those Manduka records are now impossible to find. Thanks for the video. Cheers!
Thanks for watching! 🙏
LOVED the video and loved meeting you! Would you mind mentioning value a little more? I liked how you gave a ballpark value for the Led Zeppelin album.
I sold my early copy of Sabbath Vol.4 when I was young but I got a mint copy of the first press at a record shop called Swordfish Records in Birmingham, England a few years ago. The guy said ‘we see hundreds of these but never ever in this sort of condition’. Really glad I didn’t hesitate and it sounds AMAZING unlike the 3 later pressings I also still have; Nems being the worst.
I have a UK Vertigo Records of Vol. 4.
Question...Why is the album Love Supreme by John Coltrane so special? I have and unopened album but there is a sticker which says Limited Addition Exclusive 1LP Impulsive Orange. What is the difference between what you have shown by John Coltrane and what I have? Just curious. Thanks
#1 grail is Chet Baker, Chet. Finally purchased a nice stereo listening copy. Worth it, but like any album ever, would love a crazy clean mono. Maybe one day!
Hope you find it! Thanks for watching! 🙏
Great info love it mate
Thanks for watching! 🙏
OMG Dillion...if you EVER, EVER, EVER decided to get rid of Love Supreme I need to be your first call. That is totally one of my top 10 grails along with that Stooges. So much great stuff here my friend! Great video. I just picked up an unofficial pressing of that Fraction this week. It truly is killer stuff. :)
Ah man! I’ll keep you in mind!
Listening to Farm now. Guitarist reminds me of Jorma and musically Captain Beyond's debut
In the UK I regularly see the Black Sabbath originals but not clean. People must have played them to death when they were new.
My recent grails are Revel Weird and Wild and Time will Pass by the Spriguns UK presses in mint condition I bought them from the original owner who had played them maybe once or twice since new and kept them in mint condition. They also used to own "Magic Lady" which they sold years ago which would have been incredible to find but I don't think I could have afforded it.
I also got mint original copies of Jeff Beck "Truth" and "Beck-Ola" from the same collector and Yardbirds "Roger The Engineer". Also loads of other great records but those were the highlights.
17:35 That goes for a lot?? Huh! I need to revisit my collection. I began collecting as a teen in the ‘80s, and I wasn’t really “collecting” so much as scavenging things I thought seemed cool … and now 35 years later some of those items seem to have appreciated in value! I’ve got an original U.K. stereo pressing of _The Piper at the Gates of Dawn,_ and at the time (1987) it _did_ cost me a little more than I’d have usually paid - I scavenged the 99¢ bin at 2nd Hand Tunes in Evanston, Illinois, *every day,* it was just four blocks from where I lived and on my route home from school, but the Pink Floyd I got a further four blocks away from Vintage Vinyl for $20. I’ll have to look up what it’s worth today; I’m not parting with it, just curious what someone might pay for it!
Nice list. I've been looking for the Liquid Liquid LP for years now.
Good luck! Thanks for watching! 🙏
Just picked up a first UK press of In the court of the Crimson King on the pink Island label, like an hour ago haha! Yay!
Niiiice
Watching this for the first time, great video, and rip Rodriguez ☝🏼
Great picks. King Crimson! I have many of these but not the collectors version. That is your specialty. But you are missing Pink Floyd Dark side of the Moon and Genesis Selling England by the Pound.
I got the ride the lighting first press but one of the labels was never applied during pressing. Is it worth more?
I have 10 of those albums on vinyl. Similar tastes here! Shout out to Big Star!
Pink Floyd | Wish You Were Here. My all-time favorite album. Would sell a kidney for an original copy/first UK pressing in good condition. ☺️
Nice selection. For it's confusing that the first Beefheart album is called Safe as Milk because a song of the same title appears on the 2nd album, Strictly Personal. Both albums are great and more listenable than Trout Mask.
