Dolores sings and talks very quiet because her hearing is extremely sensitive.
Did you notice Bruno walking across the balcony in the background when Dolores sings, and then dancing to his own song on the balcony?
Fun fact: Dolores sings softly because her gift is that she can hear everything over a mile away so evrything is loud for her, thats why she sings softly

Fun fact: The song "we don't talk about Bruno" is based on a singing style that is originated in italy but is very popular in Bolívia. The composition where you can hear each pearson singing their part alone and then in the end everyone is singing their part on top of each other to create the final choir is called "madrigal choir".

I wonder if that’s on purpose. Lin Manuel Miranda uses this in almost all of his works. You can hear it in 96,000 from In the Heights and Non-Stop from Hamilton. It’s very fun to hear all the voices blend together and build to a climax.

Exactly, she's actually the "perfect girl" of the family, the epitome of a disney princess. The fact that her voice change can also reflect her character development is amazing story telling.

Fun Fact: The voice of Camilo (the shapeshifter) is performed by Rhenzy Feliz, who is known for his live-action acting but does not have a lot of singing experience as far as most know. Kudos to him for this great performance!

I think Disney has began getting rid of Disney Princess style voice since “Princess and the Frog.” Anika Noni Ross belts it out as Tiana in her movie. I think her style of singing is completely different from the older Disney Princesses.
Why does everyone forget about Meg? She didn't have the traditional Princess style at all, and that was still in the Disney Renaissance period.

I feel once you’ve seen the movie it’ll make sense. Isabela the one in a purple pink dress she “has to be like princess perfect” if that makes sense and Mariano is the guy she is betrothed to marry for the Encanto. Dolores has super hearing so I believe she sings softly because she thinks she’s too loud she even claps with just her index fingers. Pepa the one that sings (it was my wedding day and Floods my brain) her mood controls the weather. Camilo (sings 7 foot frame rats along his back) he shapeshifts. Luisa isn’t singing in the song but she sings another song before this song is sang I believe

It’s interesting you mentioned Isa’s “cliche Disney Princess voice” because her arc is that she’s pressured and expected to act like the “classically pretty golden child” making pretty flowers and when she just wants to be *real* and flawed.
And the girl singing quiet has super human hearing… so it’s interesting you picked up her characterization
It's so cool to watch someone who hasn't seen the movie react to the song and pick out all the choices that were made for characters that reflect their personalities so well. Like the "quiet" singer sings that way because she can hear everything! And the "princess-y" singer is that way because she's supposed to be the perfect one! Love this

i love the voice of isabela being the original disney princess-y voice as her also being the "golden child", i think it complemented her character really well.
Fun fact the reason it’s more like a musical is because Lin manual Miranda or in other words the writer of Hamilton wrote the music to Disneys Encanto
so lin manuel miranda wrote the music for this movie, and he’s famous for those overlapping, complex vocal parts in his songs. he also wrote the entirety of hamilton m, which is an amazing musical

I was watching another UA-camr discussing the music in this movie and he said that the old-school musical term for this type of overlapping vocals with different lyrics that follow the same tune is actually called a “madrigal”, so the Madrigal family is literally named after this exact type of performance.

The songs for this movie were written by Lin Manuel Miranda, which probably explains the musical theater feel of them. I believe he co-wrote songs for Moana as well. It would be awesome to see you react to Encanto, the songs are great and the characters are a lot of fun 👏🏻👏🏻

Yea, I'd have liked him to react to ALL of the songs. Not just 1 song in a movie he didn't even bother watching. The songs are dialogue basically in a film like this.
The best part is that for this movie he actually got involved early on, so the songs work like they would in a musical (characters emotions build up to the point of singing). I love his song in Moana but I think you can tell the songs were added after the script was written rather than working on both at the same time.

Disney’s other big song-writing pair has been husband and wife, Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
They got started with Avenue Q and The Book of Mormon before writing for Frozen, WandaVision, and other Disney titles.
So, it’s little wonder that recent movies have sounded more like musical theater than past Disney princesses.
FINALLY SOMEONE TALKED ABOUT HOW CAMILO'S VOICE IS SO GOOD. I mean, they're all good but there's something about Camilo's singing voice that's so good, and I can't really point out what it is because I'm not a vocal coach and I don't study music

The reason why that character was singing quiet is because her power is super hearing. Throughout the entire movie she’s very soft-spoken, until she starts losing her power like the rest of the family in which she speaks louder
And at the table scene where she raised her voice she covered her ears
And also she was being quiet because she knew that Bruno was in the house walls for years since she could hear him, so she didn’t want to make him feel bad. Also she really didn’t say anything bad about him. Delores technically gave very sutle hints that Bruno was still there and hadn’t run away from home.

you should watch the whole movie tristan! i'm not sure how youtube's copyright would treat you, but the music, visuals, & plot are incredible (probably one of my favorite disney movies now)... theres a lot of themes & cultural elements explored throughout the movie & it would be cool to see what you think about colombian culture making its way to a big release (: this song is such a great taste of every aspect in the movie so thank you for checking it out !!

1:45 you mentioned it sounding more like 'musical theatre' - one of the writers in this movie is Lin Manuel Miranda the creator of Hamilton! Also it's so cool that you've mentioned how that one princess sounding girl "Isabella" is how Disney princesses used to sound and how the main character Mirabel has a dark sounding voice - now I can tell what they tried or are trying to do - not having the main females have to be a particular way or be stereotypically feminine. Isabella's character arc was to break out of the 'perfect' box they put her in, so it adds to that.

just one thing to add- Isabella's singing here does very much change from her "perfect daughter/princess" trope to how we hear her sound in the next song "What else can I doo" when she's empowered, using her lower range, and belting without that princess airy softness; song also in which ironically Mirabel sings with Isabela's Melody in this :)
2:10 isn't it because she's talking about someone who she knows is hearing her? Dolores is the only one who knows Bruno is still in the house. In fact, you can see Bruno in the background on Dolores' part.
Also, she has super hearing. For her to sing loudly is like having super vision and staring at really bright vivid colours

Personally I would love to see a reaction to the whole movie, because I feel like the songs make more sense in the context as they are very tied to the characters who sing them. Also this movie is different then most Disney films in general, they do things they have never done before and focus very much on the characters which resulted in one of the most complex movies from them yet, with a beautiful message.

Stephanie Beatriz voice is so insane! I remember hearing her actual voice after getting used to her Rosa’s deep deep deep voice from Brooklyn Nine Nine
She is such a phenomenal actor and voice actor. Her range is incredible.
Fun Fact: Mirabel’s voice (the protagonist) is Stephanie Beatriz aka Rosa Diaz in Brooklyn 99 and is interesting what you said about her having so much control with her voice because the actress actually make her voice deeper in the show for her character and sound like 2 different persons really and she did that for 8 seasons the show had so that’s really impressive.

The alto representation in this movie is so good omg. I don't think you commented on this part but during Dolores's "rap" part she hits a C3 😩 And Luisa/Jessica Darrow's song surface pressure is also very low it's so good
I really liked dolores part cause it fits her character a lot she is a character that has superheating and typically superhearing is a blessing and a curse as everything is really loud and there too much noise so she sings quietly to avoid overloading her ears

a lot of the non traditional disney sound to the encanto songs is due to lin manuel miranda, known for creating in the heights and hamilton, who helped create this movie. you can hear his influences with the almost hip hop/rap sound during dolores’ verse(the quiet singer) and the combined verses which we see a lot in Lin’s musicals like in 96,000(in the heights) and non stop(hamilton).

The movie takes place in Colombia (edited for spelling error), and it has been said that Lin really did his research on the varied types of music that represent different parts of Columbia. As usual, he did incredible!!

their characters are really well represented in their singing, the lady singing softly is dolores who has very very sharp hearing so she sings softly because of that and the disney princess sounding one feels like she must be perfect, so she plays the role of the perfect pretty girl.

I think every single person singing in this song represents who they are like Mirabel talks serious in the song because she is worried the whole time, Isabella sings like a Disney princess, Dolores talks quiet because her gift is hearing, and Camilo talks sneakily bevause he is a shape shifter and so on. It just impresses me so much on how they put this song together.
Notice how Camilo’s voice changed when he sang “Yeah, he sees your dreams, and feast on your screams.” towards the end when all the voices over lap.
You need to watch the movie!!! There’s so much context to their voice that is so important. It enhances their singing style
The reason why Dolores, the one who was singing softly, talks/sings in such a soft/quiet tone is because she has the gift/power of enhanced hearing so she is very sensitive to sound.

also, the one girl that sounds like a typical Disney Princess was designed to be the "Disney Princess" trope in the family, like the perfect golden-child - so she was definitely coached to sound more traditional and femme in that way, which is super neat that you picked up on it!

Her gift is that she can hear EVERYTHING, so she sings quietly so she doesn't hurt her ears.

Which makes the line "Do you understand" all the more foreboding, especially as Bruno is in the background of this scene on the balcony, where Delores would absolutely be able to hear him.

1:48 Lin Manuel Miranda helped write a lot if not all of the songs in this movie. Which kind of fits with what you said about the vocals being like those from musical theater as he does write musicals.

The songs were written by Lin-Manuel, the man who wrote and plays Hamilton in the Hamilton play. So the fact that it sounds like it comes from musical-theater is because of that! It's such an amazing movie, so I would definitely recommend watching it!

This movie has a LOT of female lower vocal ranges represented which not only is unheard of in Disney but is pretty rare in broadway and musicals in GENERAL. As an alto I was very happy for once to hear a lot of songs that I don't have to hard pitch alter to sing along with lol
I think that Dolores soft vocals help make Camilo part even better. The difference in their voices makes the part more impactful.
I love everything that you pointed out without watching the film because it shows how well they were able to portray everyone even without context. Isabela is literally made for her character to be a typical, perfect Disney Princess as she is the favorite child. Her looks & her voice as you pointed out are supposed to reflect that.
Something I enjoy about this film is that I feel like I can sing along to this songs as someone who isn’t practiced. Especially Luisa’s song, with her lower and rougher voice than what is typically cast.
The last astute point you made is that the singing is more theatrical than Disney’s usually style-the entire thing is shot in a way that is easily translatable into a play or musical. The way they move and how scenes are set up are intentionally like that so people can see them as if from a stage, and because LMM wrote the music, you can hear his own personal influences in flow and lyricism.

Lin is an incredible artist like he’s so talented he leaves like a little bit of him in every song he writes. Rewatch Hamilton and then encanto, there’s so many musical similarities as well as plot themes like Dolores’s prophecy her love is “betrothed to another” and we watch further and find out she’s in love with her sisters boyfriend… Hamilton Angelica was in love with her sister Eliza’s husband Hamilton. So many more similarities like this are present throughout all of Encanto. I honestly wonder if the producers got a few tips from Lin while writing 😂

I think it's so amazing that Isabella's part is one with the most voice acting since she's actually acting for the sake of the family, like Isabella is constantly acting so the singer is too ! Just like Dolores' part is sort of whispered since loud sounds (such as loud singing) would hurt her ears. I so love the attention to detail !

The reason why the girls voice is so low because her power is hearing the smallest noises like a pin dropping she can hear wishers that’s why she whispers when she sings. The reason why the other girls voice is more like “perfect” and “princessy” is because her power is being perfect and making beautiful flowers bloom so she gives off a more Disney princess vibe

Probably the reason tha Dolores’ part is so soft spoken is to mirror her actual character. Her scene is filled with louder footsteps and things like that, probably to signify how her character also hears all these amplified background noises. For why she speaks softly, I thought it may be because as she hears so many things, she may have actually come to dislike loud things in general because they’re very distracting for someone with enhanced hearing.
the lady who plays mirabel (the lead) was also in ' In the heights' and she sings in a different style there too! Also isabella's voice sounded so pretty and disneyesque because her character is supposed to embody perfection. I thought that was really cool of you to notice even without context!
