The whole thing with Isabella (flower girl) singing in majors instead of minors and overly enunciating is a really excellent piece of character work by Miranda. She's the 'perfect' character, so it makes sense that she would sing her parts 'perfectly.'
If you listen to "What Else Can I Do?" you notice her voice changes as other changes occur which is great story telling through vocals. She has the traditional Disney princess voice in this song.
It's like every Disney princess,being perfect, dolares is shy so it's silent,mirabel is happy and deep, and the son changes his tone cuz he can shape shift, Miranda is such a genius
There's a lot of things Miranda did well with this song. Dolores singing softly, and the fact that they're all singing together in such a way, being that their family name is Madrigal - which is having multiple parts being sung at the same time. I think it's quite a beautiful message for the overarching theme of the movie. They all have their own separate powers/strengths/stories, but they come together as one family - and they're better when they are finally together as one. 😊
The use of minor/major to set character traits is very ABBA-esque, or by more modern standatds Nightwish/Opeth land.

I love that cousin Dolores was on top of Bruno's story, "always left abuela and the family fumbling, grappling with prophesies they couldn't understand".. that's the whole story right there.
She and Isabela are the oldest, so they remember Bruno more than the other kids. And of course, Isabela got the good fortune, so she had no reason for concern, leaving only Dolores to spill the truth.

@@IceMetalPunk Not quite. Isabela's was also a curse, because the life she dreamed of was not perfect like her family wanted. She plays it off as a good thing, but it's not to her. Also, Dolores's gift allows her to have heard everything that happened with Bruno, she knows he's still there and that he's misunderstood.

If she belives it's the "perfect" life she was forced to live, then she belives she will never be happy and will always just be acting for the family. If she belives it's the life she actually wants, then she knows that she's somehow going to "mess it up" and dissapoint the family. Either way, she'd probably view it as a curse.
This has to be one of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s best songs. So many melodies smushed together to make a king of a song
He actually has used a similar idea in the past of taking different parts and melodies of a song and layering them together. One example would be in the song the Non-Stop in Hamilton (final track of act 1) there a section at the end that has Washington, Eliza, Angelica, and Burr all singing different melodies from earlier in the musical but it comes together I think similarly to this.

Frr I literally laughed so hard because when people hear Spanish music usually the first thing that comes to their mind is that it’s Mexican.
I love how this song was structured like a villian song and his design is too with his color and eyes and such. But if you actually look at the lyrics none of it is his fault they just blame him.
someone I was talking to about this also pointed out that Bruno's powers are the same shade of green that disney typically uses for villains too, so we subconsciously associate that color with "evil"

Interesting fact about Isabela's part in this, the way she's written in the movie has her as, to quote Mirabel, "the perfect golden child". As a result when she sings it's, as you pointed out, in a major key and her diction is perfect to give it a traditional Disney princess vibe.
Interesting that he pointed out that her part had a "pop" sound, as her solo song What Else Can I Do? was written in the style of a 90s Latin Pop song.
Next you should react to Surface Pressure from Encanto, where the lead singer has a cool alto voice and awesome mixed voice!

This sounds so much different than your typical Disney song. It has much more of a musical theater vibe, which is why I love it. And everyone's unique voices and styles makes the song more enjoyable to sing along to.

One of my favorite things that someone pointed out abt the song is how during Dolores' part because of her gift, the sound effects get louder like their footsteps and hearing their skirts ruffling, etc. it's such a neat thing to add during her part.
Also I remembered one of the producers(?) tweet about how Agustin was watching Felix and Camillio then joining in on the dancing but he's offbeat is really cool, the people who worked on Encanto put alot of small details it's amazing
Fun fact: The Madrigal family are named after a song form know as a "Madrigal". They consist of multiple unique voices singing a different melody from each other.
What's funny is that Joel NEVER mentions that. I would think that him with all his musical knowledge would have picked up on that real fast. Oh well.

Renaming the character Bruno (explained at 6:30) is also such a LMM move! In the second Hamilton song, 'Aaron Burr, Sir', Lin made up a short story about Hamilton punching someone in the school's admin office (sometimes called the Bursar) so he could use "Bursar" in the song "Burr, sir".
It's the perfect example of the genius that is Lin-Manuel Miranda. That the different harmonies collide in the end part is pretty similar to Lin's song "Non-Stop" from Hamilton: all the characters melodies and lines collide in the end part and it just fells....amazing. And the mix of the different styles are just so fitting. Lin just makes the best songs that bang and slap just really hard.
The same with 96000 in In The Heights! Lin just loves doing those mashups but they are amazing and feel so different each time.

@@athulk2736 it's because it's for kids tbh, when they don't lay enough groundwork kids lose too much of the plot and Disney loses the 7-13 year olds that care about the storyline and not just colors and sounds.
I mean it wasn't a plot twist to be honest. This song makes it clear that everyone is just wrong about blaming Boruno. I don't think the producers were trying to go for a plot twist

5:17 After taking tours of Disney's music department, they quite literally only hire the best of the best musicians when recording music. Even their live performers at Disneyland have to go through a cut throat audition process. When I was in highschool, my drumline coach at the time was also performing at Disneyland and he told me that he had to go through a few auditions just to get the job and 100's of other drummers didn't make the cut, but were still highly skilled/talented. So yeah Disney only takes the best that the world offers.

I know Joel isn't a big musical person, but I think he would really like much of the soundtrack. Although, I would recommend doing what I've seen someone else do and watch the film and record your reactions to the songs when they come to get better context and to truly understand the characters.

“There’s so much going on” is exactly what I love about this song. There’s so much happening all at once but it’s all so cohesive and together and it’s beautiful and vibrant and it just explodes with this emotion and color that I don’t normally hear in a lot of songs.
React to dos oruguitas. I don't see many people talking about it here. But it is my favourite song in the whole movie. It plays towards the end of the movie while abuela's story is being told and it is really very emotional. Understanding the meaning of the movie and listening to it will really make you cry. The singer, Sebastian Yastra is also just amazing.

The man responsable for all of the songs is Lin-Manuel Miranda (also known for his appearance as Alexander Hamilton in the "Hamilton" musical. He did a wonderful job with combining colombian music with todays modern music. He's a talented man with a heart of gold.

I learned recently that the family name has a double meaning. Madrigal is a part-song for several voices, especially one of the Renaissance period, typically arranged in elaborate counterpoint and without instrumental. I remember trying to do them in choir a long time ago, but totally forgot that word till this song came out

I love this movie and the music and colors and the story behind it. I love all of the songs, but my favorite 2 are We don’t talk about Bruno and Surface Pressure. My favorite 2 parts in We don’t talk about Bruno is Dolores where she’s quiet “rapping” and then Camilo where he can change into other people, his voice is just soothing and I love it. This song has been in my head non stop I’m always singing it.
I love the fact that Joel nailed Bruno's character story (not actually evil) and his power (fortune telling). From literally just one song. That's crazy.

She’s the one who is deemed the most perfect one out of her whole family, the one who gets everything she wants, I feel like her chords are major and happier sounding to reflect that.

Of course we all know about Lin-Manuel's "Hamilton", and the part where all the characters' parts melt together at the end of this, immediately reminded me of the end of "Non-Stop" in Hamilton, but ALSO reminded me of a song in Lin's other musical "In The Heights" called "Blackout". Almost the entirety of the song is all the characters singing each their part on top of each other, to really emphasize the chaos around them, and it's just SO GOOD!
If you're a fan of Hamilton, Moana and Encanto I can highly recommend giving the "In The Heights" soundtrack a listen!
OH! Also, fun fact: at 1:02 you can actually see Bruno sneak around in the background.

Just want to share with you: last night, around 3:30 am, I was stuck in a severe panic attack (1 hour +), I was unnable to go back to sleep, and was worried I would not be able to go to work this morning. Every single of my usual tricks to help me calm down weren’t working.. Then, I decided to try to « reset » my overthinking brain by watching youtube videos as a last attempt to overpass my panic attack. We've watched Encanto so many times and this is the one that gets stuck in everyone's head. I find myself singing it throughout the day, every day. It wasn't even my favorite but definitely the most catchy.

The reason isabella (flower girl) sounds so different, is not only because she's supposed to be the "perfect" one but while she's in the perfect persona she's supposed to resemble the "disney princess" type and she actually shows that in how she sings here. If you go react to her solo "what else can i do" (my favorite song from the movie) you can hear it change.
What I like about this reaction is it's not over the top or forced. A lot of creators reacting to Encanto songs stop them every 10 seconds, say "whoa that was so good, let me play that again" and repeat that 10 times and that's like 90% of their video xD
The one with the major chords was also the only one with something positive Bruno predicted it sounds like. So it could be Miranda switched it up to match that.
Well Isebella is suffocated by having to be perfect all the time so she is complaining as well.

It was hard for me too, to hear most of the lyrics when I first watched the song (I couldn’t focus) but a few rewatches later I got to understand how amazing the song really is
I honestly don't get why "We don't talk about Bruno" is taking off so much lately? I acknowledge that it is very good and absolutely a groove, but I think "Surface pressure" is the best song from that movie.
I disagree! Surface pressure is not bad, but it's hook is not nearly as memorable as WDTAB. One listen and it'll stick in your head. It's also not nearly as groovy.

That's exactly what I thought. Both are great but to me Surface Pressure takes the win.
I first liked that song as well I couldn’t understand why everybody liked we don’t talk about Bruno but I think it’s such a hit because there’s different types of peoples opinions on Bruno. And there’s different types of varieties of the way the sing

I love this song but surface pressure is my favourite! It has such a Hamilton feel to it too and the song is so relatable to me personally. Luisa is my favourite character. Encanto is amazing

Joel definitely check out Surface Pressure from Encanto too! It's got some pretty cool twists and turns and interesting switch-ups with instruments. I think you'll love it. It's a close race between that song and this one.

It's always amazing to watch you just go over to the piano, name every chord, and play along with the song right away. It blows my mind every time.
at 7:20 those chords go major because her prediction was positive - „He told me that life of my dreams will be promised and some day will be mine“, „he told me that my power will grow and thrive...“ while everyone's was negative, and they talked about Bruno negatively
