Oh my gosh, I just love Disney music so much 😁 I had so much fun listening to this for the first time -- now it's time to go watch the movie! What are your FAVORITE Disney songs of all time? Maybe I'll analyze them 👀
Mulan reflection, the Aladin remake Speechless, any Brother Bear song or any Tarzan song
Surface Pressure from Encanto
Honestly this has become my favourite Disney Soundtrack, as I literally love every song as well as well happily listen to all the instrumental pieces too. Which has not always been the case. Then again I've been realising how much I just love Latin American music of late and this has just reconfirmed that. But must re listen to some of the other soundtracks now that I'm more into the instrumental parts as well now.
In terms of songs Dos Oroguitas one of the latter songs is a new favourite but maybe best not to listen to yet as it's a bit spoilery as it's towards the end and turning point of the movie. From other movies. Beauty and the Beast, Try Everything (another new favourite), I see the light, Reflection, and You'll Be in My Heart. Plus so many more.

You definitely should analyze Surface Pressure from Encanto
Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the music and put so much thought into each song and character. The psychology of the characters and plot are amazingly well done. Miranda even puts Mirabel’s song in a waltz tempo to show she’s out of step with her family.
Yeah, Miranda is undoubtedly an extremely good songwriter(and even singer). Miranda could do anything with music
That is why this movie is so good.
LMM is making himself into a new Menken. And I mean that in the most flattering way possible.
That man's genius DNA is all over this ENTIRE soundtrack and it shows. Everything he does is just amazing!!!

The character you thought was Bruno both kinda is, and kinda isn't Bruno. It was Camillo, who's gift in the Madrigal family is he can shape-shift. As he sings, he shape-shifts into what Bruno looks like. When his color scheme is yellow, it's what Camillo's normal look, and when it's green, that's what Bruno looks like.
They did a good job showing off the real-life phenomenon of kids looking a lot like their uncles, I look a lot like my uncle and my nephew looks a lot like me.

Firstly, when you see "Bruno" morphing between his sinister self and a smaller boy, it is just the boy, who has shapeshifting gifts (part of the story). Bruno's gift was that he could see visions of the future, but no one liked it when he tried to warn them of ill-comings.
Couple of fun facts:
If you look carefully at the background during the first "breakdown", you can see Bruno's sillouette creeping around the balcony.
The family is called the Madrigal family, which as well as rhyming with "magical", is also a type of music from the renaissance era which the climax of the song immitates (in the fact that it is polyphonic with multiple vocal lines).
Two more things:
Felix (I think), the guy at the beginning starts beating on his chest to start the percussion
During the breakdown there is some tap-dance on a wooden block or stage, which you can hear echo throughout the music.

Yeah but traditional 'Madrigal' is sung acapella without instrumental so this technically isn't it, just polyphonic singing or counterpoint music. Edit: but you did say it imitates, just stating the difference.
Another fun fact: That silhouette was *confirmed* to actually be Bruno by people who worked on the movie.
And one more fun fact: Dolores is the only character who refers to Bruno actively in the present tense. (Camilo doesn't count because he sings more about Bruno being some sort of boogey man rather than someone nearby.)
Would love to hear your analysis on another Encanto song, "Surface Pressure". Very strong alto with a unique voice. Lin-Manuel Miranda is the best thing to happen to Disney since Alan. Also, notice in the second verse, the girl who has super hearing, the sounds are extremely enhanced so you can hear the wind as they move, the tip-toeing, the swish of their dresses. Disney thinks of such small details.

The "little boy" has the magical ability to shapeshift. Everyone in the family has a magical gift except for Mirabel. Bruno is her uncle who was gifted with the ability to see the future.

Alan Menkin isn't the composer for this. For the last few Disney musicals, (Since Moana, I think) Disney's go-to composer has been Lin-Manuel Miranda.
And Mark Mancina on score.
I would love to see Alan and Lin-Manuel work together on a movie or hell even a song, I feel like it would be amazing but they are both so insanely talented in their own right I'm a little afraid they will overpower each other.

If you want, you should do 'the family madrigal' next. It's the first song in the movie, and as it suggests, it explains all the characters. That makes reacting to the other songs a bit easier. Super nice and detailed reaction as always!
I agree....Do one more reaction before watching the movie in full.....The Family Madrigal will clear up some of the Faux pas that you made in regards to Bruno.....I watched the movie last night for the second time and enjoyed it more than the first time....I picked up much that I missed in the first watching.....
I love this song so much. It starts with a salsa-like walking baseline before going through rap, classic Disney villain, classic Disney princess, and then manages to blend them all together somehow. It's amazing
It’s called “montuno”, the father of salsa.
The music in this movie is amazing. Lin-Manuel really wanted to get the Colombian sounds right. There are actually a number of very famous Colombian singers in the movie. He had to coach them over zoom and the whole cast finally met each other at the opening. I loved this movie. My nephew, age 7, loved this movie. And I happy cried both times I've watched it. Would love to see a reaction to any of the other songs after you've seen the movie. Louisa's Under Pressure is fantastic. And, of course, another wonderful thoughtful analysis. And a joy to watch your reaction to hearing this song for the first time. Which you will now have stuck in your head forever.

The little boy/Bruno that you saw is actually Camilo! He's the main character's cousin and is a shapeshifter :) he was shifting into a scarier version of Bruno to frighten her.
This song reminds me so much of Lin’s other song “Non Stop” from Hamilton. It’s so well put together with how it pulls from everyone’s parts and puts them altogether at the end.

First,I have to tell you that I am a very old lady, not some enchanted young girl. I just discovered you a couple of days ago and immediately started binge watching all of your videos. I must say that your versions of Creep and Bad Guy did something to me that I had forgotten could happen. DAMN. Young man, you are amazing.

I'd recommend watching "The Bass Gang" and their cover of "Emperor's New Clothes" and their Billie Eilish covers - Even if you're not a Billie Eilish fan, this guy's in them and they hit some *insane* deep notes but also some fantastic high notes!
This song has been stuck in my head since December. Was so pleasantly surprised to see you react to it, Peter!
Here's a character run-down:
Bruno: one of three siblings (triplets) but he has a magical power of predicting the future. But his predictions tend to be negative. He appears in the song with green eyes and that green cape
Mirabel: the main character, and the girl that is listening to these stories about Bruno. No magical powers but Bruno has information she needs. Bruno is her uncle.
Pepa and Felix: Pepa is another of the triplets and Felix is her husband. Pepa can control the weather (Felix has no magic). Bruno is her brother.
Dolores: Pepa and Felix' daughter. She can hear all sounds around, including the softest sounds (why she whispers and talks about hearing muttering and mumbling). Bruno is her uncle.
Camilo: Pepa and Felix' son. He is a shapeshifter. So he can turn into any other character, including Bruno during this song.
Several townspeople sing about the fish, gut, and hair.
Isabela: Mirabel's sister. She can control plant-life. She is perceived as "perfect" (notice her melody goes major). Bruno is her uncle.
Abuela: She's the mother of the triplets (the grandmother of the younger characters). She doesn't have magic herself, but she discovered the magic that was passed on to her kids and grandkids.
This song deserves an Academy Award in my opinion!
Felixs power is his love for Pepa, watch his eyes, they animated him constantly sneaking glances at her, and I love it

Did no one notice Isabela sings “I’m not fine” at the end of the song (at the end of her verses when they all sing)? It’s so creative cause the other singers hide it, and especially with Isabella’s proposal coming up I think she was starting to freak out and of course her song being next where we learn the truth

When I had first heard of Lin Manuel Miranda, I wanted to know what all the fuss was about until I saw him on a late-night show and I became intrigued with him. He performed an off-the-cuff rap song about some random words that Jimmy Fallon had given him so he would mention them in the rap song. He was brilliant and I was sold. I did some further digging and now I am a huge fan of his and I ought to be ashamed for not having watched Vivo sooner, bad Dyana, lol...
I was honestly hesitant yet curious before I clicked on because it's a 20 minute video to a 3 minute song. But I'm so glad I did. There's so much learning in this video and so much thought within it. Incredible watch! I'm gonna go binge watch your channel now hahaha.
Really curious how your analysis would change knowing the background of the characters in this song. I love that the family Madrigal is singing in a madrigal format. I did not notice that Dolores' part was so stripped back - but it makes sense - she "hears everything" so of course her part would be quieter. Damn this guy is incredible. He’s gorgeous, he’s got that amazing speaking AND singing voice and he knows his music theory like a beast and can totally play it all by ear and hear underneath the layers. His analysis is spot on.

At 9:12 the character is called camilo, he's the protagonist (Mirabel)'s cousin who has the ability to shapeshift into other people, hence why he becomes Bruno. One of my favourite touches is the slight change in style between when he's the 15 year old Camilo and the more sinister Bruno!
Lin Manuel Miranda who wrote this is just an absolute musical genius. You should DEF watch Hamilton the musical he wrote, you'll love it :D it's on Disney+ as well
Hamilton’s music is overrated. In The Heights is both his masterpiece & magnum opus
she didn’t have a door cause her gift was the whole house 💜 We don’t talk about Bruno passed let it go. I don’t care for frozen and never seen it. My daughter saw Encanto in her school and she loves it, so I just watched it Thursday.
What a fun song . For a long time I was able to use my ailing mother as an excuse to buy Disney and Pixar type movies . Moms been gone a while and it's been a thing I simple avoided but I want to see this one after listening to it with you. Very fun piece.

the voice actors voiced multiple languages and it’s a good show of how well composed this was
And those are all different voice actors from the respecitve countries. And got pretty close to sounding very similar.
The only languages that shared voice actors were English and Spanish for Pepa, Felix, and Abuela

I really do need to go watch this movie, I hear so many good things about the music itself. I mean Disney ALWAYS has amazing music but when people discuss movies you hear about it all but with this movie, it's just the music, the music.

Also worth noticing is in the animation, whenever they're describing Bruno or telling a story about him, the background is slanted, as a signifier of their skewed view of Bruno

Your first impression of Camilo's behaviour is awesome. If I hadn't watched the film yet, I'd probably think he was Bruno until he also sang "We don't talk about Bruno!"

I highly recommend watching the full movie because this entire movie is a masterpiece! And it gives so much more depth to the music when you understand the story behind it!

I love watching all different kinds of musicians talking about this song, because each one has some new brilliancy to point out.
I already a couple of comments on Camilo and Bruno. Just adding that that "little dead/ghost kid" at the end is Mirabel (the main character) herself, if you haven't recognized - that's her main scare from the found prophecy, that she is destined to break their house/family apart.
I loved your analysis. I don't know a lot about music, but you explained the different vocal qualities in a way that made sense to me. I enjoyed this very much.
I love your analysis! My fav part was Dolores' muted verse which is whispered at twice the speed (I won't spoil why) also what the beginning leads were doing is called 'call and response' singing. The repetitive bass line keeps teasing but the kicker is that the characters' melodies purposely aren't on beat but work together, especially overlapping in the climax. Also when you watch the movie you'll notice the reoccuring use of the key of C. Interesting to see if you know why ❤ Subscribed.

Alan Menken is my absolute favorite Disney composer. I find myself loving every single song he writes. Like, he wrote the music for Tangled the Series, and I will seriously create a playlist of all the songs from the show and just loop it continuously.
I really like your breakdown! I hope you do the rest. :) Also, watch the movie and then watch them again because there are so many subtleties about the way they are singing that ties directly to their characters and their powers.

I’ve been hearing a lot about this song but haven’t heard it yet (nor have I watched the movie) so I’m glad you did this.
Also, I feel you on the post nasal drip. Last January I had it and it stayed with me until summer. I got it again in December when the temps started getting low again here in PA and I still have it.
Lin Manual Miranda wrote all the songs. If you don’t know who he is, he wrote and starred in the Broadway musical Hamilton and wrote the songs for the musical/movie In The Heights. He also wrote the soundtrack for Moana.

8:31 wow!!! Blew my mind again with what you can do. And you were enjoying what you were doing right there.
A cool thing that I just noticed: the chord progression is very similar to that of the "Dies Irae" which is used in a lot of films and TV shows to suggest a sense of dread or paranoia. This is relevant because at this stage in the movie, Bruno is still thought of as a mischevious, vile character that disgraced the family.
I just want to say how *amazing* that vp was at 8:31. You're incredibly skilled to have picked it up so fast and it sounded so smooth, well done!
