Something that people seem to never realize is that at this time Freddy was seriously I’ll from HIV/AIDS. That alone is horrific but then when you factor in that it was the 80’s and people who had those diseases were shunned and ostracized, you really begin to see how monumental this collaboration and friendship was. Here is Montserrat Caballe, one of the greatest Opera Divas to ever have lived, holding hands with an AIDS patient. Touching him. Loving him. Treating him like a human. Everything about this is breathtaking.

I've watched mini-docs, interviews and anything else I could find, in order to learn fully about their "unique" and devastatingly beautiful love affair. I know... Freddie was a gay man and Monsterrat was a married woman. That's why I used the word unique.
They truly had an abiding love for each other from "the moment (she) stepped in the room". He fell in love with her voice first and when they finally met for the first time, he said he was more nervous than he'd ever been in his life because he wasn't sure what she (the diva with the voice of an angel) would think of him. Can you imagine THE Freddie Mercury being nervous about meeting ANYONE? LOL
She was only the second person he spoke openly with about his illness. The first was Mary Austin. He only "officially told the rest of the members of the band, who were like brothers to him, what his diagnosis was - a year and a half before he died.
They all knew that he was terribly ill for quite a while, but they figured he'd tell them when and if he wanted to.
Brian revealed this after the movie Bohemian Rhapsody had shown a poignant scene of him telling them all right before Live Aid in 1985, because he wanted Freddie's legacy to be 100% true and accurate.
But, if anyone wants to know the full and amazing story of Freddie and Monsterrat, just do a search with both of their names and you'll find loads of information. It might be broken up into several articles and videos, but it's well worth it if you're a fan!

Rock star Freddie Mercury had a dream: to hear his idol Luciano Pavarotti singing. In 1983 he went to London’s Royal Opera House, where he experienced the power of Monserrat Caballé’s voice for the first time in Verdi’s opera Un ballo in maschera. As Mercury would later recall, he sat still while the opera diva’s incomparable bel canto sounded.
The rock musician’s biographers would later point out that it was from that time on that he listened to only one music - the incomparable Montserrat Caballe. The rocker to the end of his days considered the native of Barcelona, the best performer of all time.
In an interview with Spanish television on July 31, 1986 he made no secret of his dream - to sing a duet with Caballe. This rumor reached the opera diva and interested her. They met for the first time at the Ritz Hotel in Barcelona to discuss preparations for the 1992 Olympics. The rock musician and the opera singer had to write a song for the opening of the big event.
They instantly felt a deep respect for each other and their hearts beat in unison. Each of them would later describe the encounter as fateful. It seemed to them as if they had known each other for a thousand years. This meeting was the beginning of their sincere friendship.
Monserrat Caballe recalled: “Freddie turned to me and said: I have a present for you, a song called Exercises In Free Love. Would you be so kind as to perform it when you have time, anywhere, even in the bathroom? The song sounded pianissimo and very, very melodic. And I took the score he handed me to perform it in the future.”
When the opera diva asked Freddie Mercury for a special gift, a song about her hometown, it was already the famous “Barcelona,” the future anthem of the Olympics. They met repeatedly at the rock star’s apartment and talked until morning. For the sake of these gatherings Monserrat neglected her sleep schedule. She was the first person who Freddie Mercury trusted and told about his incurable illness - AIDS.
On October 8, 1988, they sang at La Nit Festival, held on the occasion of the passing of the Olympic torch. Three compositions - among them “Barcelona” - were included in their joint album. Unfortunately, due to the passing of the legendary Freddie Mercury, the friends were never lucky enough to perform the anthem at the opening of the ’92 Olympics. “It’s impossible to replace Freddie with anyone!” - Monserrat told the organizers. The song was played on the recording.

So so glad you guys reacted to this and loved it! I was a Queen fan in High School and our Spanish teacher played this for us. I was obsessed with it! She only had a bad copy on tape, and couldn’t find it for sale anywhere! This was 1988. No MP3’s, no internet, no cd burners! I had a friend who went on the school trip to Barcelona. I gave him $20 and told him he had to come home with it on CD for me. He came through and I wore that CD out! 😂❤️💿

Funny you should say this...I saw it live on the Closing Ceremony of the 1988 Olympics. I always recorded the Olympics, but back then it was on VCR. I saved my tapes and as I moved locations over the years my tapes somehow either got lost in the move, or ruined. I couldn't hear the song again until music venues started surfacing on the internet. I can't remember what it was called back in 2004(ish) but it wasn't UA-cam back then. Now I can hear it on UA-cam whenever I want. Thank God for UA-cam! That VCR copy Was a bad copy...but I played it over and over again...until I couldn't find it anymore. You were fortunate to get a CD!
