I arrived in Bend on Sept.15 1976. Pop.= 15,000. Head West up to the high lakes and see a few that stayed close to well worn trails. So the adapted members could go to the real beautful secludedspots. It was spectacularly awesome. It was an easy place to meet othere. Very fine vibe. We all were on volleyball teams and boating and fishing groups. Had to make an occassional trip to portland but that. Was just another adventure. I absolutely planned to live in my Ochoco Lake side home until I died. But a divorce right at the write beginning of the2008 reccession destroyed my financial well being. My divorce lawyer. told told me I couldn.,’t live in Bend area. Anymore. After 40+ years. I raised my kids there. They learned how to not be-able to read or write at the Crook County public schools. So I left town and moved to the coast. I miss the Bend years of 1976 to 1996. That’s when we ( the 15K pop.) lived in Bend. We were young and motivated and very excited to be there. A person cannot come to Bend and not love. But we of the 15000 , WE LIVED LIFE in and around Bend. And loved every minute of it. I miss that era very much. And it’s gone forever. .

Moved here from Salem, Bend was a utopia of beauty with the lakes nearby, would load up the fam and head for South Twin The hometown vibe was a great place to raise my kids and we never had any issues with finding and buying housing. Now with the raising population growth I am saddened every time I venture out of my house, I rarely go anywhere except to the grocery store. Forget downtown going out to eat, I think the people moving here from cities are used to the lines of people and rudeness you encounter from drivers and people in general. I am at a age that leaving and starting over is not an option so I have no choice but to stay home and become a hermit 😪

I’ll give my opinion as someone from Napa, CA and who’s lived here for about 15 years. My wife grew up here. When I moved here in 2008 this was a cool place. Now the traffic is terrible. It’s expensive AF. Partner and i make over $100,000 and have minimal debt and it’s still tight. No yearly vacations other than within Oregon and surrounding states. We rent and get a good deal cuz our landlord likes us and doesn’t want to gouge us. Can’t believe how much these poorly built homes are selling for. My brother bought a house for $700,000 in Napa that would probably go for more in most areas here. That tells you something about how crazy home prices are. Not sure why everyone floats the deschutes river in Bend when you can have a way better scenic float in the Sunriver area and actually see wildlife. Cuz everyone here are sheep. The summer concerts are a joke and the bands aren’t anything special. The ski resort is way overcrowded and expensive for what you get. No local deals and if you work during the week don’t bother going on the busy weekend to stand in long lines. I know bend is the working remotely capital of the world (yes I looked it up). It’s obvious by how many people are on the roads at all times of the day. Feels like nobody works in this town. Summers are way too short. Winters are long. Nothing in between. And the amount of people with their sprinter vans (neighbor included) and earthtone clothing makes this place feel like an L.L. Bean add. Seriously everyone is trying to be just like the next yuppie. I’d move but we have family and grandparent here so it’s not happening. Just gonna keep on keeping on and hope for a major adjustment in home prices so we can have our forever home for our large family. Rant over.
Do the people of Bend think their sweet town is covered by a protective bubble? I don't understand why they are surprised by the unsheltered, drug use, rising costs of EVERYTHING. Because that's what's taking place everywhere. We visit Bend every year and find it magical. The people are the most friendly, the town is extremely clean. Like anything else if you don't like it, find a place you do. Be happy.
You’re right, drug addiction and homelessness exists everywhere. People are addicted to meth, fentanyl, crack and heroin all across America. It’s an insolvable problem.
I live in St. George, UT. I would love to live in Bend (grew up in Portland, lived in Astoria for 12 years) if it wasn’t for some of the above mentioned negatives. St. George does not have homeless encampments largely because of stricter drug laws and enforcement. As far as I’m concerned, liberal (or should I say leftist) politics are to blame. I guess I’ll stay in a red state.
I’m perfectly happy in Laguna Beach Calif and we get tons of people from Oregon & other tourists taking over our town in the summer. And we do have great restaurants and shopping. We wish a basic house was $700,000! You can’t get a 500 square foot shack for under a million dollars out here! I wish more people would leave California because I’d like less of them! Very few people who are native to my area have no desire to go to Bend in spite of our issues out here. Maybe you’re getting people from San Jose or LA.
I love Laguna and drive there from Long Beach down the coast often. I love walking along The cliff path, swimming at Shaw’s Cove and Crescent Beach. It’s expensive and I pay high rent to be in great sunny weather all year. I love California. Bend seems like a place to visit for exploring nature.
Laguna is a great place to visit. Lots of things to do. But I'd never wanna live there. It's getting to the point I don't wanna live in Oregon anymore either. I guess we're all kind of stuck where we are and just deal with it.

I don't know about that. Unless you're buried with student loan debt you absolutely should be able to afford it here. Unless your definition of comfortable is a lot different than mine. 😆

Lived there for 30 years. When I left, I got more money for the same job, had no problem finding a place in the best school district, and the cost of Iving is 30% cheaper. Not to mention more available good paying jobs. I moved to a bigger city with better traffic and A LOT less portentous people. Super glad I left. Everyone I talked to from there are always so stressed.
I live in Redmond, lived in Bend during the late 70s and, yes, there is a lot to dislike in that once sleepy little mill town. It’s now poverty with a view for many locals. Unfortunately with fast growth comes growing pains. I just hope things settle down before Bend turns into A Portland wannabe.

My parents live in Bend. I don’t like visiting because there’s WAY too many people crammed into that small city. It’s overpopulated now. An hour wait an any restaurant. Not enough businesses for the amount of people that live there. Like a sardine can. No thanks. It’s beautiful though.
Prices there are just as expensive as where I live in Ventura, California. I still plan to visit this Winter to go skiing at Mt. Bachelor. I bought an IKON pass and plan to use it.

Born in Bend and my family goes back to the towns founding. While it’s a problem with the entire state of Oregon as a whole it’s particularly concentrated in Bend and Portland.But there really has been NO CONSIDERATION either economically or culturally to the negative effects of gentrification. Bend used to be very blue collar and really was not really any more remarkable than Klamath Falls. The improvements in the local Economy since the 1990s has been built by and caters to recent transplants whether it’s in homes or small businesses. Back when Bend relied on a industrial economy (rather than a tourist one) I knew people from more economically evolved areas could care less about a place like Bend, and now that people are moving here from those kind of areas you really get to see just how much they didn’t take people who were living here before into consideration. The out of state upper middle class colonized Oregon and built it in their own image……. They seem to be completely oblivious to it
Why should it be for working class workers only? No one can stop middle class and above from building mansions and moving there. Bend has no cultural institutions such as art museums, opera, a plethora of art galleries, or diverse high quality restaurants. Bend seems remote.

I wouldn’t go to Portland for shopping worst place in Oregon ever. Eugene and Springfield is closer. I never get the people in Bend going to Portland that’s a long ass drive by a hour sometimes more if you stop then there is Portland traffic.

You have to go all the way back to the 60s when the governor said and I'm paraphrasing: Come to Oregon for vacation, then go home. That pretty much worked up to the early 90s. Back when driving to work on I5 at rush hour wasn't a rush at all, no traffic jams and everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful. Hiking in the Columbia River Gorge was like a fantasy. There were many times you could hike for hours before finding another person. Oregon was indeed the perfect place to live if you wanted to be off the beaten path. You guys mentioned the lack of shopping, cost of living etc. In Bend. Bend was mainly considered a vacation spot, great for hiking and skiing. No one wanted great shopping experiences then. They lived there because no one else lived there and it was largely unknown except for the vacation experience. As they said back then, come here to vacation and then go home. It was very inexpensive to live in Oregon back then because not many people moved here and demand for housing was quite low. Most outsiders didn't want to put up with the weather and the remoteness of the vacation spots. But then it changed and Oregon was advertising as the place to be and construction began everywhere, people came and Oregon became a place to move to. More and more houses are built, more and more people move here. Now people outpace the housing and prices skyrocket. So how can you begin to complain about the things you hate about Bend when you're literally part of the problem in providing a path for people to move here. I know you're not the cause, just a contributor. People have to make a living, right? As for the Californians, which is true but really people from all over the world move here. I know if I were a Californian and couldn't afford my little house with my $200K salary, hell ya let's go to Oregon where my salary buys me massive amounts of land and a giant house. Let's do this thing! And for a while that works. Until too many people come and drive up the price of everything, make demands for better shopping experiences etc. Why would anyone want to move to a peaceful quiet remove place and then demand a city experience? I mean move to a city if you want a city experience! Don't take natural areas and forests and transform them into cities. Go do that in Nebraska where it's flat and city building ready. Leave Oregon alone. oops, too late. The days of peace, solitude and remoteness are gone for good. We're being transformed into another LA or San Francisco. Just sayin.
Great video as I think most people looking to move here hear the word Bend and they are on their way. I lived in PDX for 21 years....RANNNN out of there when I could. Moved to north Dallas Texas for work for 4.5 years. Came back to Bend in 2019 and lived in a 700 Sq foot apartment in NW. Rent at the time was $1440 a month plus shared building and common area utility bills. I could and can afford it but between throwing a partial mortgage payment a month away.....AND THE POLITICS....I made it 7 months and RANNNNN out of there as well. Bought a new house in Redmond 1.5 years ago and am up $300K in gain. If you love everything about Portland.....homeless, drugs, politics, tons of people, etc....Bend is the place for you. If you cant stand all of that and want a different version of politics and more country feel....and houses that are at least $200K less than Bend.....then Redmond is your spot.
Absolutely loved this, your humor and quips are priceless. Every community evolves, we lived there in the mid-1960's, and again in the mid-70's, I have always loved the region and town. That said we try to get up as often as we can and even though Bend has evolved (for the better) I would not want the Bend of 50 years ago. Of course, the realtors are not to blame, communities change and grow, in Bend's case for the better (at least for the moment). 😁

I saw a recently uploaded video of campers lined up in Bend in both directions towards the hills, the line was almost 1/2 mile long on both sides with derelict campers! I was in Bend not long ago, there were homeless everywhere and it was hot and overpriced at most eateries, if your not into the outdoor, which includes snow most of the year, you will die of boredom! This place reminds me of Santa Clarita CA, a overpriced superb of LA!

In a capitalistic society there is no solution. A social democracy would work but as soon as you say social anything everyone cries out communism. It will change eventually, it has to. AI and automation will run literally everything. Which I see as an awesome time as it frees up humanity to pursue their own lifes desires without worrying about how they can afford to live or where they can live. You have to go all the way back to the 60s when the governor said and I'm paraphrasing: Come to Oregon for vacation, then go home. That pretty much worked up to the early 90s. Back when driving to work on I5 at rush hour wasn't a rush at all, no traffic jams and everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful. Hiking in the Columbia River Gorge was like a fantasy. There were many times you could hike for hours before finding another person. Oregon was indeed the perfect place to live if you wanted to be off the beaten path.
You guys mentioned the lack of shopping, cost of living etc. In Bend. Bend was mainly considered a vacation spot, great for hiking and skiing. No one wanted great shopping experiences then. They lived there because no one else lived there and it was largely unknown except for the vacation experience. As they said back then, come here to vacation and then go home.
It was very inexpensive to live in Oregon back then because not many people moved here and demand for housing was quite low. Most outsiders didn't want to put up with the weather and the remoteness of the vacation spots. But then it changed and Oregon was advertising as the place to be and construction began everywhere, people came and Oregon became a place to move to. More and more houses are built, more and more people move here. Now people outpace the housing and prices skyrocket.
So how can you begin to complain about the things you hate about Bend when you're literally part of the problem in providing a path for people to move here. I know you're not the cause, just a contributor. People have to make a living, right?
As for the Californians, which is true but really people from all over the world move here. I know if I were a Californian and couldn't afford my little house with my $200K salary, hell ya let's go to Oregon where my salary buys me massive amounts of land and a giant house. Let's do this thing! And for a while that works. Until too many people come and drive up the price of everything, make demands for better shopping experiences etc. Why would anyone want to move to a peaceful quiet remove place and then demand a city experience? I mean move to a city if you want a city experience! Don't take natural areas and forests and transform them into cities. Go do that in Nebraska where it's flat and city building ready. Leave Oregon alone. oops, too late.
The days of peace, solitude and remoteness are gone for good. We're being transformed into another LA or San Francisco. Just sayin.
Great video as I think most people looking to move here hear the word Bend and they are on their way. I lived in PDX for 21 years....RANNNN out of there when I could. Moved to north Dallas Texas for work for 4.5 years. Came back to Bend in 2019 and lived in a 700 Sq foot apartment in NW. Rent at the time was $1440 a month plus shared building and common area utility bills. I could and can afford it but between throwing a partial mortgage payment a month away.....AND THE POLITICS....I made it 7 months and RANNNNN out of there as well. Bought a new house in Redmond 1.5 years ago and am up $300K in gain. If you love everything about Portland.....homeless, drugs, politics, tons of people, etc....Bend is the place for you. If you cant stand all of that and want a different version of politics and more country feel....and houses that are at least $200K less than Bend.....then Redmond is your spot.
Absolutely loved this, your humor and quips are priceless. Every community evolves, we lived there in the mid-1960's, and again in the mid-70's, I have always loved the region and town. That said we try to get up as often as we can and even though Bend has evolved (for the better) I would not want the Bend of 50 years ago. Of course, the realtors are not to blame, communities change and grow, in Bend's case for the better (at least for the moment). 😁

There's just no comparison... but yeah we've thought about expanding the channel to include more areas of Oregon.
@@KrommRealEstate You both sound very elitist and snobby in your remarks! Eugene/Springfield has what Portland has but, much cleaner and nicer, even friends who live in Portland say the same! Portland is not what it used to be, get real or get out of your bubble! I saw a recently uploaded video of campers lined up in Bend in both directions towards the hills, the line was almost 1/2 mile long on both sides with derelict campers! I was in Bend not long ago, there were homeless everywhere and it was hot and overpriced at most eateries, if your not into the outdoor, which includes snow most of the year, you will die of boredom! This place reminds me of Santa Clarita CA, a overpriced superb of LA!

There are many places where homelessness is extremely bad. No city has figured out the solution.
In a capitalistic society there is no solution. A social democracy would work but as soon as you say social anything everyone cries out communism. It will change eventually, it has to. AI and automation will run literally everything. Which I see as an awesome time as it frees up humanity to pursue their own lifes desires without worrying about how they can afford to live or where they can live. Lots of things need to be fixed in America and really around the world. We can't keep doing this to our own citizens. Sorry, I rambled on longer than intended.
