    So interesting to see! I live 5 min from 2 Krogers, Walmart, Target, Whole Foods, Publix, Wegmans, Trader Joe’s, and a ton of smaller grocers. Realizing I am quite spoiled for choice. My family was stationed in Alaska just before I was born so interesting to see what their life was like!

    Ive always wanted to live in Alaska, i have no idea why or when it started but it began as a very young girl. I live in London in England, and the fact that 24 hour shops werent 24 hours during lockdown felt extremely difficult for me. I had the same "whaaaat?" feeling when I realized 24 hr walmart was no longer gonna be. They used at 8pm and I remember it being so bothersome since I was used to going to the store at 10, 11, midnight because that was my prized "ME" time away from my kids and their noisy chaos...and the 'Rona took that one special thing away! Took a few times of actually driving to the store and realizing it was closed in order for my brain to click! Hahaha! We definitely get used to stuff like that and get spoiled.

    My daughter and I pull of some big Costco hauls. However, we live about 10 minutes from a Costco and 30 minutes from another. City dwellers take convivence for granted. I shop once a month shopping at Costco, Sam’s Club, Trader Joes, Hyvee, and Walmart all on the same day. I used to complain about the parking. Never EVER will I complain again. So many question, you didn’t explain very well for us reg people lol. By that I mean a grocery store every 15 mins in every direction.
    1. How did you get it all to the ferry? A cab? Then you loaded on 3 friends cars? So everything went on 3 peoples cars you weren’t sure who would help. How did you get it all home? Did you unload again at ferry then another car? Why don’t you rent a car for the whole experience? Or how come you don’t own one? Or your mother? How come you do this all alone? Do you have lists you use every Time? Soooo many questions we all have. Like how you store. This could be a whole video. Longest question Ive ever asked.

    • @LewisFamilyVlogAlaska
      @LewisFamilyVlogAlaska  3 роки тому +108

      My sister drove the silver car and a friend brought her Jeep to help transport stuff. The stuff went into two friends cars who where taking their cars back to Kake. The other stuff went on the baggage cart that the ferry provides. Joe and my brother Jonny brought our two cars to the ferry to pick everything up once we got to Kake. I went to Juneau by myself because Joe was working and I did not want to take my daughter to Juneau with all the Covid-19 trouble. I had a master list I took everywhere. We will try to show how we store everything in a video soon. Thank you for watching. Hopefully I answered all your questions.

      @@jeannerybaczek5855 Prices are very high....there's another family from Alasak that does videos that do the occasional shopping haul & show prices at the store. Some of it is like YIKES! I don't know how people afford to live in Alaska with how high everything is. In most places literally everything is flown in & the stores have to pay their price plus shipping per pound which others have mentioned (they talked to managers) are usually $0.50 or $1.00 a pound. Again yikes.

      Used to buy many items in one year batches. No Costco, then. Veggie went on sale in fall (4)16oz cans for $1. I would buy 5 cases each (12cans) of peas, green beans, carrots and corn. Frozen broccoli florets on sale in 3 month amounts (12-16 bags). Chicken (.79) and beef ($1-2) in 3-6 month amounts. Pork/bacon in 3-6 month amounts. Whole Turkeys (4) at 35-39 cents a lb. November/December stock up on baking supplies. I cooked from scratch so no cream of soups or Alfredo sauce. When cheese was $2lb, I would buy 15-20 lbs to freeze. Brown rice .79 lb. Beans were in cans at .30-50 cents. These items were usually bought in different weeks. Milk, eggs and bread as needed. Though I would freeze bread. Spaghetti sauce was usually free to .25 cents a 32oz jar between sales and double coupons. Usually 6-8 jars at a time. Pasta was 4lbs for $1. But one year, pasta was free with sale and coupons. Frozen food in upright freezer, one month of food in closet food pantry. Rest stacked in large, airy, well lit basement. Two cats patrolled there daily and never saw a mouse or even mouse droppings. No bugs either. 2009, I got 120 boxes of Kellogg’s Raisin Bran Free plus $40 in Catalina’s. I gave 70 boxes to the food bank. 120 cereal boxes were to much to store. It would take 2 yrs, 4 mos to each it all. I admit I over did it but it was free plus $3 in Catalina’s each time, no limit. When the pasta was free, I donated 120lbs to the food bank.

    WOW! You win the award for hardest working grocery shopper. Your hauls are epic. I live in NY state & complain when I shop on line & use instacart & have to drive 3 &1/2 miles to pick it up have someone load my car for me then I drive 3 1/2 miles back home & have to unload my car & put it away. I'm so ashamed after seeing how hard you work grocery shopping. I will never complain again (well maybe a little,hehehe)

      This was our biggest but for the year because we where able to take it back on the ferry. When we travel ( if ever since covid) we will take a tote and get smaller things here and there if needed. Joe put everything away while I slept in. It was great! I probably would have bought more stuff if I would have know the ferry would work out so well. 🤷‍♀️

      I am one block from the Chicago border-it literally starts at the end of my block. I am six blocks from a major supermarket. Even with essentially being in a major city, near to what we need, we keep a full pantry for the winter months. When we get snowy, freezing winters here it is just terrible. No one wants to go out for necessities.

I was texting hubby as I viewed it, we live in a major metropolitan area in the continuous 48. I will never complain again about forgetting something at the store and needing to return. I can walk to 3 major grocery stores and 8 smaller ones, less than 1/2 a mile. But we drive as I usually shop on my way home from visiting my parents. I love your location views, beautiful, and such an adventurous life.
