Hihats part 2: EQ & processing essentials

  • Опубліковано 10 чер 2024
  • In last week's video we looked at strategies for programming hihat lines in dance music, and this week we look at the technical treatment of those hihats! We learn some equalisation basics (notching resonances & achieving tonal balance), some reverb techniques (adding reverb without muddiness), and some volume shaping (subtle LFO pumping). All together these techniques should ensure that your hihats gel perfectly with your track, and should give you full control over their design!

    I just applied that notch EQ technique in a song I've been struggling to get sounding how I want. Instantly made my hats sound 10x better. Then I decided to give it a try on my ride and crashes, and it instantly made those sound 10x better. Then I thought maybe this could be applied to the high-end on a snare, and it instantly made the snare 100x cleaner and cut through the mix twice as well with barely any volume adjustment required. And now with all the highs being so much cleaner, the entire mix sounds levelled up with hardly any adjustment to the other parts. Game changer! Thank you!

    small tip when using Ableton's EQ Eight, especially when processing hihats: right click the top of the device where it says "EQ Eight" and tick "enable oversampling" to prevent aliasing :)

    • @lespieces
      @lespieces 2 роки тому +3

      Absolutely David. I saved the eq8 as default with oversampling enabled, so every eq8 I load anywhere in Ableton already has this function enabled, for ever.

    Hats in general have such a profound effect on a track. A small change in pattern can drastically change the groove whilst a small EQ change, as you demonstrated so effectively here, can totally transform the tone of any track. Nice one.

    I´m not totally agre especially with te notching resonance becouse it kills the esence of the 909 hihat, if you use to create other hihat based on this it´s ok but for mixing, I think you have to be less drastic

    I subscribe to the general feeling in here, absolutely amazing content, clear explanations, nothing boring, such a great teacher, nothing I`ve seen on YT so far. You have rekindled my love for music production after I quit some time ago, because it felt too much information, while I couldn`t understand so much of the basics. Your style of taking it from the simplest things and building it up in a natural flow helped me understand so much stuff I was using blindly. Really good tutorials, watched many of them this weekend. They offer something for beginners but every tutorial has something useful for more advanced producers as well. Often stuff you kinda know already, but don't really pay attention or stuff you do sort of randomly instead of a good reason and logic. The few hours I just spent made me level up as a house producer. Thanks!

    I had heard about notching before, but was hesitant to touch it as I heard a counter argument that you could be battling against your room acoustics rather than the sound itself, but I went to my headphones and tried this method, and I actually was blown away when I A/B after notching and altering the overall tonal dynamic after notching too.
