The "Gated Reverb" technique in 4 levels of complexity
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 лип 2024
- Here we learn a classic sound design technique, where we add a large reverb to a sound, but only play it in short bursts. This adds the excitement of big reverb to our sound, while also staying snappy and rhythmic!

Mate, your videos are top notch. Could I request something on Maceo Plex style robot "voice" (aka Vangelis). Maybe I should just do a 1 on 1.
Friendly reminder that, whenever adding reverb to a very percusive sound, you might want to set the pre-delay as low as possible
You're one of the few producers who has the humility to just frankly explain the concept, instead of overcomplicating it and making it super abstract. Thanks.
One of the best production channels I know.
This is great. I believe a lot of the 80s sounds, it wasn't even always the snare being sent to the reverb, but a gated pink noise.
this channel is the goat for electronic music
Yes bro! even seasoned producers can learn a lot of new tricks with your clear explanations. dope!
🧡🧡🧡 Yoooooo Athila!
You're a "dope". "Bro".
I like triggering a gated pink noise sound, then put my gated reverb on the pink noise, not the snare. Sounds awesome.
Been producing since 1985. Always learning. Your videos and delivery are superb.
I like that in fl studio's convolution reverb plugin, you just have to shape the volume automation line to gate your reverb impulse. It's so fast and precise :)
I now 100% understand gated reverb. Even though I don't produce music myself, this was the best explanation on Gated Reverb I found.
Thx for opening the gates of knowledge to us
Yo this was honestly the best tutorial on UA-cam! So many people don't make advanced tutorials for us who have been in the game a little longer. It's awesome to see things in different complexities to get a better perspective on it. Please do more videos like these!!
another great, clear video! Thanks Oscar
Zoals altijd helder en duidelijk uitgelegd. 👌🏼 Super! Dank!
Totally cool, thank you so much for the tips Oscar! 🙏😃
Great vid, cheers for the tips! I was always doing level 2, but 3/4 really has a nice touch.
Oscar, you have very quickly made this my favorite production tutorial channel on UA-cam. This tip is tremendous, and just the thing I need for my current project; I absolutely went for the Phil Collins Snare effect; I got close, but now I know how to perfect it. Thank you for making this video and releasing it into the world.
Hans Zimmer watches these videos , they that good.
🎵 bwoooommmmmpppp
Why are you spreading lies?
I don't know if this is true, but I wouldn't be surprised. I watched his Masterclass, and apparently he designs all his synth patches himself.
@@decapitateallcops3214 why do you think it's a lie?
@@decapitateallcops3214 ur cappin
Well explained as usual, thank you
Of the tutorials on gated reverb/snare I watched, this one is the most concise and even the more complex methods were easy to understand. Bravo!
You just solved something I've been struggling with for years, and the mechanics are very well explained. Thank you !!
My god, I spend so much time changing automation levels! Never thought to use utility to adjust the mix, you sir are a legend!
whole vid great and microcomp at the end a banger - thanks!
When I stop my production and start a class of your channel is the moment I'm always sure I'm gonna grow too much on my job... Thank u
You did a great job of explaining everything, and I love the levels of complexity! I've been making synthwave music for the last year, and the weak part has always been the drums because I relied on plugins or samples. Now I have much more control over the sound and can create my own 80s-sounding snare with gated reverb-- or use it however I like for other instruments! Thanks a bunch!
Absolutely brilliant. Thanks
you are always dropping gems plus the vids are well structured, great channel fr
Fantastic tutorial, thank you so much!
even the mastering for the audio in this video is superb. nicely done!
Put it on the closed hi hat sounds great.
I also tried to make a bus to my snare, put the reverb and gate on the bus and then make the gate have a decent attack to get it bouncy
Very cool and useful, thanks!
this is an awesome channel, thank you for teaching us, I discovered this videos just 4 days ago and they´re becoming my favs
Your videos are fantastic! Well done!
Excellent , thank you . You speak in a relaxed but clear way which makes it enjoyable to listen to you !
Excellent teaching style. Very informative. Thanks.
Man…… nearly 81k…wtf? Well deserved Mate!!!! I’ve learned so much from this channel. Thank you!!!!
Much love from Atlanta, Georgia USA. ✊🏻🙏🏻🖤👾🖖🏼👩🏽⚕️👽
Oscar, such cool videos. I watch these in the kitchen while cleaning up (sounds odd I know, but it works for me!). I've learnt heaps from them.
I don't have much in the way of musical background, but I have some science/audio background and your videos seem to click in just right for me.
My vague, ambitious plan is to design a very simple, loop track with the things you teach here.
So much fun, thanks so much!!
Your teaching skills are awesome! Thanks for sharing your wisdom on audio and music. This is a great video.
You should have put this effect on an entire 707 or linndrum drum loop to get that instant 80s (new wave, syntpop) vibe. Would have been interesting to hear for your younger audience ;).
This is a fabulous tutorial! You're an engaging and understandable teacher!
Holy hell you just changed my life. Excellent info! Thank you!
Excellent video on this topic. Sidechaining from the dry sound is so obvious now you say it! Easier than messing with hysterisis and works on gates without this function, so much better in this application.
Clear explanation. Thanks
Amazing techniques here. Thank you.
You're the best! Always clear, concise, and full of info
ooo, perfect, I just tried this in my last tune, with a snare.
Honestly, explained very quickly and clearly a concept which I had a bit of trouble with. I basically only knew how to make a gated reverb at what you would call level 1 complexity, but in 10 minutes I got to making a much better-sounding gated reverb. Thanks 🙏
I always learn something useful in your videos , thank you Oscar, greetings from Chile!
you a an amazing teacher thank you for not sounding like a robot just reading off a script thank you thank you !
once again thank you for all those concise and precise tips and techniques , youre a wizzard oscar :p i'm fl studio user and im really happy because the way you explain things made it easy to transpose techniques from 1 daw to another seamlessly , every vid posted here convince me a bit more each day that i should consider a schooling in brussels as i live at only 20 mins from there :p
I myself am Professional Music porducer.. these are very well done. Like the energy. Keep them coming.
Your classes are the best! So easy to learn, keep it up :)
Wow. Literally the very first tutorial I followed after installing Ableton and getting used to the UX. I don’t think I could have started in a better place. Drawing in sidechain effects ‘swells’ can be used for so much more than just drums and reverb.
Thanks so much.
You are a content producer that I love very much because the information you share is very high quality, thank you for sharing this beautiful information, I am looking forward to new videos and new topics. 9:25 very nice very pretty groove
Awesome tips! I was looking for such guide around a year ago and struggled to understand the concept.
same.
Always wondering how I can I create that sound. Now I know thanks😇
bravo as always
Great tip..love it
Have learned soo much from you.thax much
Highest level explanation of information. Bravo 👏🏻
For ultimate control or if using a DAW that cannot do this, you can print the reverb track and gate manually with the volume envelope.
Thx again :) Those tricks are great! Goed gedaan :)
Very clear informative video!
Can’t wait to try using this technique and digging deeper into using gates!! Your gate tutorials have been priceless. The point about using envelopes isn’t something I’d thought to use.
Have you considered doing a tutorial on multi-band effects processing using the effects rack? Seems like an invaluable tool that a lot of producers I know (myself included) only have a surface knowledge of i.e. multi-band compression ala the Waves C4. Apologies if you already have a video on this, I didn’t see it in your catalogue.
awesome tips!!! great video :)
I've been producing for decades, long ago more so, more as a hobbyist these days and definitely have learned a bunch of new tricks for sure! This is definitely a cool one!
Thanks!
your lessons are great and so are your teaching skills
So glad I found your channel. Great stuff dude.
Thank you!
Your t-shirts are always so coool! 😎
Your FACE is so coooooool
woah thanks so much!
I am looking forward to the session ;) Beause knowledge is power and music without power sucks!
Thank You!
I was literally just talking to my friend yesterday about how I need to learn how to do this kind of effect but I had no idea how to describe it. What great timing! :) Super helpful, thanks!
I'm mixing rock and metal and just loved this video! Awesome Stuff!
Great tip thank you
Brillant!👏
Thank you.
Thank you. You are great teacher:)!
So much useful knowledge... and I'm not even a dance music guy. Thanks!
I’ve been making my own music for 4 months and i currently have 2 songs finished and during this time I almost watched all of your videos and applied so much things i’ve learned from you in those songs, i think this is the most underrated channel in youtube and deserves much more subs and attention. Keep up the good work!
Hi, nice tip! Although I rather like to use an Auxiliary for all reverbs (and no more than 2 different kind of reverbs per song) it helps gluing all sounds together..
With the Aux you can send whatever sounds to it as gated reverb works with plucks/claps/leads etc..
Thank you for the good work and nice videos you upload every week!
Very nice vídeo. You are thre best teacher! Best channel to learn electronic music.
Excellent videos sir, I just discovered your videos, very well done! I’ll be checking out more vids.
thanx bro ur really help full keep on oo
Amazing...great tip
Nice!!
