I'm 53 and I remember my friend recorded the video off MTV and we would spend hours playing and rewinding the video learning the dance moves. Finally we got it down and we would dance at parties. We even won a few dance competitions. To this day I still remember the dance moves step by step but after 4 heart attacks and a stroke there is no way in hell I could even attempt to dance like that now.

Yep. And the Fly Girls were born! Lovely girls, with amazing dance moves that took much more talent that tweaking your behind! Try as I might I just never reached the Fly Girl level, but we had one heck of a good time trying😁
Nah, Hammer was an outlier. He was overtly poppy at a time when that led people to question his legitimacy as a rapper. Now that hip-hop is much more pervasive in culture, it's evident there was room even then for all different approaches to rap, including his, but he was definitely a bit controversial among the hardcore hip-hop fans in the day.
Im a 28 year old white dude and its the first rap song i had ever heard with my parents slapping it in the car when i was like 4. I vividly remember it, amd ive beem a hiphop head to this day
MC Hammer was not taken seriously for a very long time, but retrospectively, he has been recognised as one of the main rappers to truly bring rap to the mainstream. It’s almost impossible to overstate how HUGE this song was. It was played everywhere, all the time.
The other rappers were jealous because Hammer’s music was mainstream. Could be listened to by wider audiences. More money for him. He was smart 😂 money 💰. They were too busy thinking tough. Hammer had his own cartoon character and lunchbox at one time. The haters will hate. That was just old fashioned jealousy 😢

True story, back in the early 90s when I was still a college sophomore, I went to a record store to buy some records and I heard this girl who kept arguing with the saleslady about a song she wanted to buy. She kept insisting the song title was Compact Disc and the sales lady kept telling her there was no such song. When the saleslady finally asked her to sing a few bars of the song so she could find out which song the girl was talking about, the girl hummed the chorus riff "tan tan tan tan, tan tan, tan tan" and then yelled "Compact Disc!" instead of "U can't touch this". I nearly choked from trying to keep myself from bursting into laughter and ended up coughing up a lung.
@@BlackSmokeDMax Oh absolutely but then I think the early 1990's they looked different when MC Hammer wore them! Update, I just googled parachute pants right now and indeed there are the ones you mentioned but there was a section below displaying the ones similar to MC Hammer's pants. The controversy was Rick James accused Hammer of stealing his song and sued him. From my knowledge, the case was settled out-of-court and Rick was given songwriting credit. IMO, it was a sample which was standard in Hip Hop and actually gave original artists some recognition and popularity.
I don’t get what so many rapper heavily sample past songs of other artists and have to pay them for the privilege, when they could have just come up with something original and not have to pay that money to someone else

When this song came out I was 24 and my son was eight months old. Every single time this song came on the radio or on MTV/VH1,My son would stop whatever he was doing and start dancing. We videoed it and still get a kick out of it to this day he is now 31. Now he’s playing the video for his own one-year-old daughter. It is a classic
This was one of those songs that just broke through all barriers and was loved by EVERYBODY. I'm not even sure what I would compare it to. The same kind of power as something like Gagnam Style where it just blew up and got played by everybody at every party, every event, but whereas that song was more like a temporary meme, this song just stayed hot and never quit. This song got so hot that they even gave MC Hammer his own saturday morning cartoon show for kids (it didn't last long so nobody remembers, but that happened!). Those pants were Hammer's signature style, like Kris Kross's backwards pants or MJ's white glove. That was just his thing, but you know there were people wearing that! Just like people did the MJ white glove and everything! Some people definitely did that. I just remember everyone calling them "hammer pants" or "parachute pants". They added some extra flourish to his dancing.
While Hammer was immensely popular at the time his fame and relevance had a significant decline by the end of 1991. By '92, rappers like Kriss Kross and Sir Mixalot were topping the charts, and at that point, Hammer was seen as lame, and "U Can't Touch This" became nothing more than a distant memory.
I grew up with this song. Came out when I was 4 years old. And those pants are Parachute Pants. Used to own a pair and me and some friends memorized the dance.
Ha ha , dawn so funny , I had a pair aswell , we called them parachute pants , I also had a banana yellow shirt and a yellow and white jacket , I'm sure I looked a treat 🤭 , I'm from Australia
Yes, I hope proper credit is due to Rick James here. Yes, Hammer could dance his butt off, and the genie pants were cool and all that... but this was one of the first instances of the sampled groove contributing more to the success of the tune than any other factor. Those not old enough to be able to spot the (IMO) plagarism need to be LET KNOW!!
Cool how he got the nickname "Hammer." Growing up, he was a batboy for the Oakland A's and Reggie Jackson noticed his resemblance to Hammerin' Hank Aaron. Our local newspaper printed a great photo of the two next to each other when MC was a kid and Aaron was playing for the Milwaukee Brewers (easy to find in Google Images).
These were known an “Hammer Pants”! He had them made so he could freely dance without restrictions! They became an instant must have style for weight lifters, jocks and street dancers! 😂
And yes, even us women wore them hahaha ;), at school dances when this came on a ton of us would get up and do the hammer hahaha! Now we all werent good but had a hell of a time and the guys loved wearing the shiny black shoes with it too!!!
Looks like it's been awhile since somebody commented on this video, let me tell you when I used to hit the night clubs back in the 80's & 90's in my younger buffed days, were I come from on the east coast those pants were called "parachute pants" I never wore them but you would see guys wearing them, were never my cup of tea but people enjoyed them back in the day as you younger guys would say good job on the video's keep up the good work.
The pants are called Hammer Pants. They started as harem pants, but he said they were too tight to dance in so he had his wife customize them. (saw the documentary on him) And you recognize the hook because it's been used in everything from tv shows to commercials.
Okay I am glad I wasn't the only one who called them/still calls them Hammer Pants. I knew they had another official name but I did not know what it was.
4:41 Iconic. Hammer was known for his moves in a time period when Michael Jackson was at the height of his stardom. That should tell you something. He was an enormous celebrity and the first major rap star who crossed over to all audiences. I remember the kids at my school were crazy for this song. One day our PE teacher put it on during our warm up and was shocked at how our class just came alive. People loved to get funky and just let it all out to this song. Where MJ was super smooth and refined, Hammer was funky and jerky enough that everybody felt comfortable dancing to this because he was clearly about the hype and energy and less about the refined grace (he was a great dancer/choreographer though). He had some other major hits during this time period. 2 Legit 2 Quit comes to mind. He sort of became so big that he was everywhere and people burned out on him, and by the time gangsta rap exploded onto the scene, Hammer seemed too wholesome and outdated by comparison. He tried to adapt to the times, releasing a more "gangsta rap" type sound, but audiences had moved on. He was massive though and a big part of why rap crossed over into the mainstream. You can even find clips of him performing at award shows and audiences get into it, especially when he does the "hammer dance" at 4:41. In the same way Michael Jordan's silhouette is synonymous with him, or the moonwalk with Michael Jackson, the Hammer dance and Hammer pants are recognizable as part of Hammer's brand.
In the early 80s girls wore pants like that called harem pants. They're basically salwar, worn by men and women in Northern India and Pakistan under long shirts called kameez.
I remember when MC Hammer was big, he challenged Michael Jackson a dance contest. Of course MJ didn't acknowledge or accept, because MCH was a flash in the pan, MJ is ... the king of pop.
sorry but Parachute pants were 80s and they were fitted nylon with several zipper pockets. MC Hammer wore harem pants or aka Hammer pants. Us breakdancers wore parachute pants in the 80s so the nylon would protect our skin when we touch the ground.
@@bahice Yeah. Harem pants for men. I remember at some point they became popular with guys who went to the gym. I just looked at some pictures. I don’t think I ever owned any, but the looser ones look really comfortable.

Our local newspaper printed a great photo of the two next to each other when MC was a kid and Aaron was playing for the Milwaukee Brewers (easy to find in Google Images).
I never knew this. (And I grew up in the Bay Area in a house full of baseball fans!) Great story!
I just googled the photo. They really do look alike !!!
I was in highschool when this came out. This was the song.
Just like "Bust A Move," this is one of the greatest rap songs ever. Today's rappers are like pee-wee league compared to the rappers back then.
When Rap was decent music.
Was the best thing my little self had heard when it first came out 😂
We did the running man to this at recess everyday at school, 😂.

Hell, we even learned it on our cheerleading squad!
"You know what time it is"! Hammer time
It makes me so happy to see young cats like you learn what real Singing and music is all about
Jay, you’re so cute when you dance! I think they’re called them harem pants. Very catchy, feel good song. Video has great energy. 💖
"You guys already know what time it is".
Me: HAMMER TIME!
This deserves more likes
If this was the only one of his videos you saw, you would totally assume he was referring to HAMMER TIME!
Too Legit to Quit ,hammer time 🤎🤎✌🏾✌🏾
That was a good one!
Another vote for listening to "Too Legit to Quit"
Let's Get It Started or Turn This Mother Out
I think the pants can be known as "Parachute Pants" as I recently reread a MCU fic where Rhodey says something about Tony wearing them in his teens.
Wore my purple hammer pants on the 1st day of school. ❤
These were known an “Hammer Pants”! He had them made so he could freely dance without restrictions! They became an instant must have style for weight lifters, jocks and street dancers! 😂
yep, I was thinking Hammer pants, parachute pants, but nowadays you can find them as harem pants or just drop-crotch pants
Should have patented the design
Harem pants
And yes, even us women wore them hahaha ;), at school dances when this came on a ton of us would get up and do the hammer hahaha! Now we all werent good but had a hell of a time and the guys loved wearing the shiny black shoes with it too!!!
I saw him live, fall 2019, and he STILL brings the energy! He's amazing.
Listen to this back in the day? I had the album on cassette. Gawd I feel old.
"Excuse me, constable, could you please tell me the time?"

Young MC/Know how
Hammer was great. High energy guy. We all danced to this one.
My sister twisted her ankle really badly trying to do this with her daughter, lol! Still an epic song.
It was a hit in Peru back in the early 90's
I have 5 and I love them .
The pants are called Hammer Pants. They started as harem pants, but he said they were too tight to dance in so he had his wife customize them. (saw the documentary on him) And you recognize the hook because it's been used in everything from tv shows to commercials.
Good to know! Thank you Trish!
Actually there are called parachute pants.
Actually, mc hammer wanted people to call them hammer pants, but everyone--the public and media--called them parachute pants.
Okay I am glad I wasn't the only one who called them/still calls them Hammer Pants. I knew they had another official name but I did not know what it was.
Harempants.com lol
Jay, Michael Jackson didn't have the only moved. Hammer can be a dancing machine, I loved it.🤩🤩
This was a HUUUGE hit when my kids were teens. I love it!
I was a teenager when this came, and we always called them Parachute Pants. ;)
sorry but Parachute pants were 80s and they were fitted nylon with several zipper pockets. MC Hammer wore harem pants or aka Hammer pants. Us breakdancers wore parachute pants in the 80s so the nylon would protect our skin when we touch the ground.
These are not parachute pants.
No bro. Sorry, parachute pants were something completely different.
@@bahice Yeah. Harem pants for men. I remember at some point they became popular with guys who went to the gym. I just looked at some pictures. I don’t think I ever owned any, but the looser ones look really comfortable.
MC Hammer - Pray --- Sampled Princes - When doves cry----
(Not a religious person myself but I appreciate the positive message in the song.)
Had those pants and tried to dance like that back in the day what an amazing time of my life x
I’m from the BAY AREA ,and when this came out EVERYONE WANTED TO BE HAMMER 🔨!!!
