His uncle was in the temptations, and he produced one of their best songs, Rick doesn't get the credit for all he did, He was truly a genius to the music world.
When I hear “Can’t touch this”, I think of Super Freak because Rick did it first...long before Hammer.
he sued vanilla ice for that for SAMPLING the Superfreak...
Uhhh yuh. Like 10 years prior.
@@nonenone7250 Do you mean MC Hammer?
@@nonenone7250 You're thinking of "Under Pressure" by Queen and David Bowie. Vanilla Ice sampled that song without permission and got sued for it.
same here!
Rick James Uncle Was In The Temptations
Ahhhhhhh I did not know that!
I didn't know that either.
His uncle was Melvin Franklin the bass singer in the Temptations.......ua-cam.com/video/FuI7F_5bSwQ/v-deo.html
I hope Jay reacts to Papa Was A Rolling Stone, I love this song.
Why did I think Melvin was his cousin??
This came out 9 or 10 years before CAN'T TOUCH THIS.
Wow I am old, I am from the time when Mc Hammer was rich, btw why he lost his money?
Thank you
Hate artists who steal music. Make your own. Especially less than 10 years. MC Hammer, you can’t make your own?
Get a band.
@@terrancethomas9792 there's a lot... they use the beat, like "Under Pressure"
@@terrancethomas9792 MC, not musician. Sampling was common. Not stealing if the original artist was being paid.
Rick James hated Can't Touch This until he started getting the royalty checks. "She's a Freak - A Super Freak - Super Freaky!!"
He had to sue MC Hammer to get those checks.
Nothing wrong with wanting to get credit and remuneration for your own creative work.
His ONLY Grammy was “Can’t Touch This”
What a shame
Rick James- "Give it to me, baby"
"Give it to Me Baby" and "Mary Jane" -- I'm sure you'll approve.
You need to watch the Chappelle show with Charlie Murphy talking about Rick James and Prince
HILARIOUS 😂😂😂
Hilarious!
The funniest!!!!
the best story ever told!!! 🤣🤣🤣
@One Voice ua-cam.com/video/ry2XlLKctiI/v-deo.html
" Cocaine's a hell of a drug"...
😂😂 Yeah, I remember that interview. That was his downfall.
@@rebeccalucas6063 Dave Chapelle... Charlie Murphy...Don’t know which was better--Rick James? Or The basketball game and breakfast with Prince... lol
@@fotonmom lol
@@rebeccalucas6063 he should have just stayed with weed
EXACTLY what I was gonna say...😎😎😎😎🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Rick James did indeed have The Temptations as his backup singers on this track.
His uncle was a Temptation, Melvin the base singer.
I didn't really as a 10/11 yr old singing this song realize what I was singing. But I loved the Hell out of it. Little white boy running around in a IZOD shirt singing Super Freak😆😅😂😂.
That's too cute😅
Rick James was so cool. I was a dorky 15 yr old white girl when it came out, and was well aware what it was about. I danced and sang to it too. ☮️💜☮️
LOL!
Yep!!! I was thinking the same thing! I roller skated to this and the rink… boy I loved this song!!!
Rick James didn’t get enough credit for his musical talents: vocally or for production of many successful musicians. He produced most of Teena Marie’s music. He introduced many stars into the music world he projected the image of a party boy and most didn’t look any deeper. His Song Fire and Desire with Teena Marie is a total contrast to this.
Went against the industry, called out the people running the industry and he didn't want to be a mellow .
I loved him in that Eddie Murphy song
Rick produced much of Teena's music UNTIL THEIR SPLIT. Then she produced her own stuff.
MC Hammers sampled this song. The reason he has the temptations is he was the nephew of singer Melvin Franklin of the Temptations
Charlie Murphy’s True Hollywood Stories: Rick James - Chappelle’s Show
Was just coming here to say the same thing!! 😂🤣😂
Way to funny
Absolutely hilarious!!!! Love Charlie's stories😂
@@Noogsie_47245 rip Charlie, he was hilarious
Cocaine is a hell of a drug
He called his style of music punk funk. Fitting as hell because was nothing but a good time.
Let's party YEAH!
If you like this one you gotta hear "MARYJANE"!!!
I'm in Love with Mary Jane👙
Yes!!
Back when I was an innocent little girl and I thought he was singing about a woman.
Ghetto life after Maryjane ;)
Every time I hear that I just picture Smokie in Friday lol
He created a girl group called The Mary Jane Girls. Check out their song, "In My House."
Yes!
Yessss! Used to play that on my boom box A LOT! Dang, I feel old!😩😆
They had several good songs!
Also Candy Man and All Night Long, by The Mary Jane Girls...Great Songs
Candy Man was a shit
You have seen Rick James before. He wrote and produced Eddie Murphy's Party All The Time. He also sang a bit in it, Go back and re watch the video, you'll appreciate it even more.
I thought the same thing when he started appreciating RJ. I remember that reaction
Great song.
Rick James broke the mold before there where a mold to break.
Prince before Prince was Prince.
So talented and so underrated
The Mary Jane Girls where his proteges.
Very sexual. Very creative. Very brilliant.
Prince was a huge fan of James Brown and Joni Mitchell. Prince and Rick James were big rivals before it was Prince and Michael Jackson as big rivals because Prince had basically surpassed Rick James.
@@cryptozoomauler5505 Prince was a genius without a doubt
Rick got Prince to open for him after The Rolling Stones kicked him off their tour, then they became rivals for life
"Fire and Desire" by him and Teena Marie was my fave off that album.
That would be an awesome duet to respond to
Definitely!!!
He actually played in a band with Neil Young when he was AWOL from the Army.
Dude had talent, he just had too many demons and couldn't stay out of trouble.
I believe he played with Young prior to going awol and had to leave the band because of that.
@@MsAppassionata You're probably right. I saw an interview where he talked about it, but it was a long time ago.
The Mynah Birds
"Too many demons" always a good excuse for doing drugs, breaking the law, whatever. WEAK
@@timgerke8714 - STFU.
As soon as I saw what was coming I was like, "he is going to be laughing!"
Next up by Rick James: “Give it to me baby” 😊
I can't hear this song without thinking of Brick House by The Commodores, another AMAZING tune. Glad you enjoyed this so much :D
Seconding Brick House and adding Getting Hot in Her by Nellie and Prince's Cream.
that’s a great idea for a new Jayvee reaction: BRICK HOUSE!!
Commodores rock!
I was thinking the same thing!! 😊
Asian girl with long hair was a Regular on Soul Train.
A couple of cool Rick James songs: 'Give It to Me Baby' and 'Ghetto Life'.
Also "Standing on the Top" with The Temptations 👍👍
Oh yeah Give It To Me Baby is 🔥
Yes!
Fire and Desire with tina marie
Mary Jane
Rick James had an incredible voice. The duets he did with Teena Marie are AMAZING! ❤️
Fun Fact : Rick James produced Eddie Murphy’s song. “party all the time”
I completely forgot about that song! Thank you for reminding me!
I love Party All the Time. Such energy.
And is quite prominent in the video for it.
It really makes sense
Rick James was a huge artist. Ebony Eye's is a great slow jam.
I had a few Rick James cassettes back in the day. Very talented. We lost him too soon, sad that drugs took this amazing talent
you should try the band Cameo the song “word up” you will dig it!
Along with "Shake Your Pants", but you have to see the video.
"Word up" was HUGE when it came out!!
@@ragjamrock Wow.... Have not thought about that song since High School. And you are right, it was HUGE. The 80s had so much good music it is easy to forget some of it. At least that is what I keep telling myself.
@@fredhall6525 For action and romance!! 😹
I love this song. Rick James is great. Who doesn’t want someone Who is a little bit of a super freak.❤️😀👍❤️✌️🌼
I love Rick James and at 66 years old I still think he’s the sexiest thing that’s ever happened to music 🥰 and he can sang!
Check out the duet "Fire and Desire" with Rick James and the incomparable Teena Marie
Yes love it!
This is the song, Hammer should just keep playing with baggy ass pants, and let Rick deal with the music. I'm glad MC had to show Rick the money
The 70s and 80s will surprise you brother .keep the good music playing
Super freak, super freak, she's super freaky!!! 💃💃💃💃
I will always think of the movie “Little Miss Sunshine” when I hear this now. I can remember watching the scene for the first time like it was yesterday....
This is an iconic classic! Back in the day, if a party was slowing down, this would fire everybody up to start dancing.
FUN FACT: Rolling Stone ranked "Super Freak" number 477 in its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
That's not very high.It should be in the top 200 at least.
He wrote many songs. Check out Teena Marie outstanding singer. She co-wrote all her songs with Rick James.
Not all of them. Many of her solo songs were written on her own.
Lover Girl!
@@nightbird1314 It Must Be Magic, I Need Your Lovin', Behind The Groove, Ooh La La, La La,
Lips To Find You....lots of great songs
Rick James went to prison on cocaine and kid napping charges. He got out and was old and fat. He died of a cocaine overdose. He always said cocaine is a hell of a drug.
Way to kill the mood.
Thanks Debbie Downer .
shared an elevator with rick james in the early '80s. he was propped up by a woman on his right side, but she was small and when the elevator got to my stop, he began to slide down the wall, and the woman he was with looked at me pleadingly and so i ended up taking his other side and going to the floor above my offices to help him get to his record label. i hoped it wasn't a contract meeting, because he was in no shape to protect himself from legalities. :/
JESUS you came to the aid the MAN himself . What a trip? He didn't burn you with a crack pipe? Just joking. Rip RICK JAMES a real superstar
One of Rick James uncle was a member of 'The Temptations' so I read somewhere.
Rick was The Man back in the Day .
Glad you enjoyed it and thank you to whom ever suggested it. 😎✌ PEACE OUT
I would love to see you react to Billy Ocean. Get outta my dreams, get into my car, Carribean Queen, & When the going gets tough, the tough gets going. Some great 80's music there!
U write song titles in capital letters and within quotes.
Another vote for reacting to something by Billy Ocean. "Caribbean Queen" and "Get Outta My Dreams Get Into My Car" are some of my all time favorite songs.
"Ghetto life" or " Fire & Desire" ft. Teena Marie, also Mc Hammer sampled this song for "You Can't touch this"
Fire and desire, by Rick James/Tina Marie. This auntie knows something.
That was my phone ring tone for years 😁
It's a great intro, instantly recognisable, in either song👍
Don't forget MOT UK give away😉👍
Awhile back you did the reaction to Eddie Murphy's "Party All the Time." That was Rick with him in the video - he produced Eddie's song. I recommend two duets Rick did. One with Smokey Robinson called "Ebony Eyes," and the other is "Fire" with Teena Marie. You will enjoy both of those slow jams.
Apart from the other songs that have been recommended from him also check out 'You And I'. 😀
Rick James is legendary. RIP, my Man. He was one of a kind.
Being young in the 90's, I thought MC Hammer was the one who created that tune/music with the song U Can't Touch This. Never knew it was done before, by this guy. But guess no copyright trial was made, so still cool to hear this beat. ^_^
Watch the Dave Chappelle video of Charlie Murphy's Hollywood Stories of Rick James...THE BEST!
"Cocaine's one Hell of a drug"...You'll understand once you watch the skits.
It's the funniest thing ever!
listening to rick james you must react to his girl group Mary Jane's Girls - In My house
Thirdz here. . .
Also, Mary Jane
&
Give It To Me
Yeah, that was a great song .. Such a groove and very sensual .. Bought the vinyl single and still have it !
The 80’s... RICK. Danced ourselves till we collapsed to this song in the Clubs! Super Freak was the absolute best!
Omg what would we ever have done without this song! I love this song and Rick James crazy ass makes it perfect
Listen to Rick James with The Temptations on "Standing on the Top"
One of the temptations is his uncle
@@msmon27 Thanks for the info. Didn't know that.

Love me some Rick James. I'm 51 and grew up with this stuff. He was a superstar.
So much fun! Spirits lifted! 💃🏼🕺🏻 You just couldn’t wipe the smile off your face. 😂
MC Hammer sampled this. Checkout Rick's Give It To Me Baby, Mary Jane, Ebony Eyes and especially Fire and Desire
MC Stole his music from Rick James because Rick wrote it all. Genius of Funk!!
No he Sampled his music Rick had no problem with it.
@@tawnyh8878 I meant sampled because mc hammer hasn’t wrote shit but hot checks
Sampling is one of the most common things in music
@@tawnyh8878 actually Rick James hated Can’t Touch This
@@Vitorio582 it is when your not smart enough to come up with your own stuff. That’s why today’s music is absolutely trash.
He usually did a guitar solo live.
I was working at a record store when this was popular. Usually, I got tired of the "hits" we played all the time. Not this one. It was always fresh on the ears.
Rick came to our store for an LP signing event. I brought him a soda, and he told me to stay right there by him, because I smelled too good not to have nearby all the time. So there I stayed until he left. He did ask me to come by the show, told his manager to arrange the backstage pass. I laughed and told him, I'd love to see your show, but I'm the kind of girl you take home to mother. He literally doubled over laughing at that comeback, and said, "Okay, you get two tickets, up front. Enjoy the show!"
I did. That band was something to behold in 1981.
When Prince came to the store, he was sort of...shy and aloof, but Rick was all eyes and in the moment, very warm and engaging with all the people who stood in line to see him. Prince may have had more range with his talent, but I can assure everyone that Rick was lots more fun to be around.
OmG! I was so in love with Rick James way back when Super Freak came out! Once, at my grandparents house, I put on lip sinc performance to Super Freak, with my little bell bottom jeans, and white platform sandles... I think I was about 10 years old...😁 Luckily, my Grandparents were Italian, and didn't understand a thing, and neither did I! Haha! 🙊😂
“You and I”, “Give It To Me Baby” are great songs too. I’m not a fan of the slow jams he did for the most part. He did a song with The Temps “ Standing On The Top ” Fun facts : he was in a band “ Mynah Birds” with Neil Young early on. Room 714 alludes to quaaludes, that was the number on the pills. The dancer with the long hair black hair was a dancer on Soul Train..Dave Chapelle does a great Rick James on his show.
Try his song “17”
♥️♥️♥️ 😁 dance like no ones watching. Thanks again another ear to ear smile because of you
You can't help but sing along to this song, lol. Totally 80s but a classic. Love it. I always love your enthusiasm and comments as well. Also love how you dance along. :-)
Watch the last 15 minutes of " little miss sunshine" movie...super freak is played and it's hilarious!!!!!!!
Scrolled through to find this comment haha love that movie
MC hammer ripped off this song!
No, he SAMPLED this song. Just like Coolio sampled Stevie Wonder.
@@sinenominecc Yea no a sample would be a few seconds of the song what mc hammer did is pull a Vanilla Ice and used the entire beat and change the lyrics.
@@Kazumatempest Exactly... tried to rip it off. He paid in the end tho $$$
@@sinenominecc No he STOLE the song. Rick had to sue him in order to get his money from this song.
@@itznaz6854 it’s a sample
This song came out in 1981. I was just 5. This is what my aunts and uncles would listen to.
I remember watching this as a little kid. Never even thinking I was watching anything strange. Love his music! Give it to me is my favorite video of him
This was my jam in the early 80’s......I brought this album to a party and BAM...... GONE! This album had a few good songs.
James was like Prince: Genius writer, composer & could play multiple instruments.
Cold Blooded, She was only 17, Fire and Desire, to get you started...
And oh yeah, Deja Vu, written by Rick and performed by Teena...
Every house party shook the roof with Rick!
Yessss! Saang! Uncle Rick! My mother bought me this record when I was 10 yrs old in 1981, but she obviously didn't listen to the lyrics before she bought me the album. 😜
Love this song!!!! When this song came on at the club back in the day the dance floor was packed. Fun times!
Rick James was amazing. I'm from the Buffalo area where he was from, and his sister Sherrani has been one of my best friends for the last 30 years. I met Rick many times. He was a SMART, funny, very quick witted person. And yes definitely a super freak! Check out his song Mary Jane, it's in my opinion his best
I can never resist dancing to this, even after almost 40 years.
In 1965 Rick James was lead singer in a band in Toronto with Neil Young called the Mynah Birds. The Mynah Birds also had bassist Bruce Palmer. Rick however was secretly a Vietnam War draft dodger from Detroit. Rick finally turned himself in to authorities and the band broke up. Young and Palmer then drove Neil's hearse (Neil named his hearse Clancy) to LA and famously reunited with Stephen Stills and Richie Furay in a traffic jam on Sunset Boulevard, thus forming the Buffalo Springfield. Additionally Neil's hearse can be found in the Springfield's 1966 song Nowaday's Clancy Can't Even Sing, and from The Stills/Young Band in 1976 the song Long May You Run.
Both of these Young songs are worth a listen with lyrics if possible.
Yeahh Rick James!!! Give it to me baby is fire by him!!! Love your reaction as always!!😁😁💯💯
That girl with the long black hair reminds me of one of the Soul Train dancers back in the 70's. I've always loved this song.
This is a classic tune by The iconic Rick James!! MC Hammer did sample this song for his mega hit Can’t Touch This! Yes, the real Temptations did sing on the song! Try his hit Give It To Me Baby! He was very Charismatic and very talented! He produced hits for Teena Marie, Eddie Murphy, and many more! It’s funny you mentioned Prince because my very first concert was Prince and Rick James when I was 13 years old! ❤️❤️
I remember putting this song on repeat and dancing around a friend's livingroom for hours when I was like 9 years old. He was in that Party All the Time video you reviewed, in the booth then singing backup
Rick's uncle was Melvin Franklin who sang bass for the Temps, they were all on Motown together and they were put on the album together too celebrate Motown's Anniversary .
Rick James "Give it to Me Baby" Rick James has some crazy songs and videos but beyond that he is super talented! What a voice! Want to dance and have a good time? Just put on some Rick James music!!
I’ve never seen a more joyous reaction to this song!
Met Rick James in at the Buffalo airport in the 70's. He did not disappoint!
Dancing in my chair. Def the base line of Can’t Touch This!
Crazy Rick🌹
HAHAHA! "RICK JAMES!!!" = everyone's reaction ever
Rick James is an awesome singer...Fire and Desire... You and I...oh yeah!
Rick James, "Dance wit me" is one of my favorite dance/funk songs of all time. "Hard to Get" is another good one and you should check out Eddie Murphy/Rick James, "Party All the Time." He also did a song with the Temptations, "Standing on the Top" that is on 🔥. He was an extremely talented musician and not afraid to make waves. This song was very risque for it's time. Some radio stations wouldn't even play it. He also discovered Teena Marie. Her song "Square Biz" was a huge hit as well as their duo, "Fire and Desire." Hope to see more early 80's funk reaction videos.
And Rick James was in a band with Neil Young (CSNY😉) when they were really young. Neil says they were also roommates at the time and referred to him as “Ricky”, which I love haha
This is what I need today! 😂
Whenever he put out an album..party was ON!!!
One of the songs ever!!! Superfreak!!
Impossible not to jam to this😍💃🙌
His face lights up at 2:32, when he's really feelin' Rick James...lol. 🌞
