Making lotions can be challenging, but this simple recipe makes it a fun and relatively easy project. This is a perfect recipe to try for anyone who is new to making emulsions. Feel free to substitute the oils for other oils that appeal to you. You could also trade the water phase for a lovely hydrosol like Neroli or Cucumber!
Equipment You’ll Need
• 2 - Stovetop safe pots or beakers
• Stick blender
• Measuring cups/spoons or scale
• Thermometer

Ingredients
Phase A: (Melt or Oil phase)
Ingredient : Lbs : Kitchen : %
• Emulsifying Wax
0.0248 : 1/8 Cup : 2.5%
• Stearic Acid
0.0248 : 1 ½ Tbsp : 2.5%
• USDA Certified Organic Olive Oil
0.2214 : ½ Cup : 22%
Phase B: (Water phase)
Ingredient : Lbs : Kitchen : %
• Deionized Water
0.6887 : 1 ½ Cup : 67.97%
• USDA Certified Organic Pomegranate Juice Powder
0.0130 : ¼ Tsp : 1%
• USDA Certified Organic Vegetable Glycerin
0.0248 : 1 Tbsp : 2.5%
• Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate
0.0050 : 1 Tsp : 0.5%
Phase C:
Ingredient : Lbs : Kitchen : %
• Xanthan Gum
0.0004 : 1/8 Tsp : 0.03%
Phase D:
Ingredient : Lbs : Kitchen : %
• Phenoxyethanol
0.0100 : 2 Tsp : 1%
Directions
1. Start by combining all Phase A ingredients into a stovetop-safe pot or beaker. In a separate stovetop safe pot or beaker combine all ingredients in phase B. You should now have 2 pots or beakers. One with phase A ingredients and one with phase b ingredients.
2. Heat phase A ingredients until fully melted. This will be approximately 165F - 170F. On a separate burner, heat phase B ingredients to 145F - 155F.
3. Take phase B and grab your stick blender. Slowly sprinkle Phase C (Xanthan Gum) into phase B while mixing with your stick blender. Mix until fully blended.
4. With your blender still immersed and mixing in Phase B, take Phase A and slowly pour into Phase B while constantly mixing. You may need to increase the speed on your mixer as you add Phase A. Don’t be afraid to aggressively mix.
5. Finally, Add the phenoxyethanol and mix again.
6. Let cool to room temperature and then fill your packaging and enjoy!

Very good demo. I need to buy similar hotplate and thermometers. This solves for me why my lotions where too thick or too watery. I wasn't blending in the proper order or temps.
All I can say is THANK YOU! After numerous tying, money, time and yes, Tears I finally was success because of you. I did cut some corners a little (I'm a novice) but what I realized was the temperature difference...I just love SCIENCE don't You? LOL!

Emulsifying Wax
- 1/8 Cup = 1oz
Stearic Acid- 1 ½ Tbsp= 0.75oz
USDA Certified Organic Olive Oil- ½ Cup= 4oz
Deionized Water- 1 ½ Cup= 12oz
USDA Certified Organic Pomegranate Juice Powder- ¼ Tsp= 0.04oz
USDA Certified Organic Vegetable Glycerin- 1 Tbsp= 0.5oz
Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate- 1 Tsp= 0.16oz
Xanthan Gum- 1/8 Tsp= 0.02oz
Phenoxyethanol- 2 Tsp= 0.33

Try to introduce less air in mixing using a high shear mixer. Vortex is undesired in mixing.
Very informative video, thank you! Would aristoflex avc sub x gum? And would Optiphen plus be a good preservation alternative? Both subbing the same amounts of the recipe. Or would additional testing be needed first?
Yes. Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer is a wonderful copolymer and rheology modifier. I have never used it in place of xanthan gum however. It must be neutralized (like carbomer) in order to work best as a rheology modifier. It is also really sensitive (again, like carbomer) to electrolytes so isn’t suitable for washes. Oh and it is sensitive to hydrolyzed proteins too. Also don’t let the end pH of your product dip below 4. Optiphen plus is a good alternative preservative to Phenoxyethanol and Tetrasodium Glutamate, but please note that Optiphen plus still is phenoxyethanol. We always recommend a 3rd party preservative challenge test, always.
After the lotion is complete is it possible to make it thicker if you didn't like the viscosity? If so what are the different alternatives? And to solve this issue from the beginning would i just add more Emulsifying Wax to make it thicker?

Why should you use deionized water? Is ionized water bad for making lotions?
Deionized water is water that has had the metal ions removed. Metal ions can react with ingredients causing anything from unexpected coloration to preservation issues. It’s possible that you could use distilled water in place of deionized water but I would not recommend using tap water.
Why do you need to make sure the water and oil are 20 degrees apart?

What if I am not using any water content, I am using Shea butter and glycerin with grapeseed oil, what natural emulsifier can I use?
It sounds like you’re be heading more towards a body butter and not an emulsion. So just using the grapeseed, shea and glycerin should be fine, but maybe adding some arrowroot powder to aid against greasiness. Because glycerin is water soluble, you’ll want to keep it at a low %

Xanthan gum works as a thickener to stabilize an emulsion. Since emulsions are thermodynamically unstable systems, it’s always helpful to have a stabilizer such as a gum or polysaccharide.

You can put that oil most likely into your emulsion during cool down.

Due to the use of the emulsifying wax and stearic acid, the concept is that the oils should not separate out over time. However, technically an emulsion could separate at any time. We have yet to see this occur however with this formula.

Hi Sally, great question. Tetrasodium glutamate diacetate is a chelator--in this formula it helps to boost the preservation system (which here is phenoxyethanol). Chelating agents bind up trace metal ion contaminants in your water-containing cosmetic, thus keeping the product microbe-free for longer. They are not preservatives in their own right, they just help to kill microbes by starving them. Long story short, it compliments the preservative and extends the shelf life of your lotion.
What actually causes a “soaping effect” in lotions/creams and how would you go about getting rid of it besides using dimethicone?
Hi Kim! The soaping effect can be caused by not using enough emulsifiers. You can get rid of it by using more emulsifiers like oils or butters or you can also use mattifying ingredients such as Arrowroot (Tapioca) Powder.

I started making lotion I’ve been doing good but this last batch was bad. I used germall plus for new preservative and I tried a higher wax level 9% ewax and btms50 and it got thick so fast how can one get help with their recipes or formulations

Great question. A Chelator (such as Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate) is an ingredient that binds up trace metal ion contaminants in your water-containing cosmetic thus keeping the product microbe free for longer. They are not preservatives in their own right, they just help to kill microbes by binding to their trace metal ion food supply. Lovely thing too, is that in cosmetics, they are used in small amounts.

Sadly Xanthan Gum is not an emulsifier, it is a thickener. Emulsifiers will make two or more elements blend together such as polar and unpolar ingredients. A thickener such as xanthan, simply thickens. However you could try one of my favorite palm free non GMO emulsifier, Cetearyl Glucoside & Cetearyl Alcohol and simply replace the emulsifying wax at the same %.

What does the pomegranate powder do?
in this case it does a few things. One is that it helps to raise the organic percent. Once you add pomegranate to the water, you get pomegranate juice and we use organic pomegranate. Pomegranate is also known to be rich in antioxidants.

Hi Amira, in our opinion it is a must add. Preservation is very important and removing the chelating agent changes the efficacy of the lotion. You can try Phytic Acid or EDTA as an alternative, but be sure to challenge test it with an independent challenge test company first. Great question!

The term "natural" is not defined in the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FDC ACT) or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) implementing regulations. So it is up to you to determine what you consider “natural”. Here at EWL, the use of emulsifying wax would make the product not natural, but instead naturally derived. Here are our definitions internally “Natural= Plant or animal derivative; retains its molecular structure without chemical modification. This would be ingredients such as carrier oils, essential oils, powders, butters, waxes, ferments. Then we have Naturally Derived = Plant or animal derivatives where new molecular structures are created. This would be ingredients such as many surfactants, many emulsifiers, some preservatives.

No, beeswax will not create a stable emulsion. You have to use an actual emulsifying wax. Beeswax is more or less just a thickener....

Great video! Thank you for all the commentary. I’m just beginning learning and have a few small batches under my belt but....I made my first 3 lotions with calendula and chamomile in the water phase, so, an herbal infusion/tea was my water. I made the lotion for family and two days later found a video that said tea/herbal infusions should not be used in the water phase. I quickly tossed out the lotion and haven’t made another batch yet. I have so many questions! I appreciate the video!
Hi there! We use tea during the water phase quite often! It is necessary to use Deionized water with the tea or herbal infusions, so that may be the problem? Also using a tea or herbal infusion could lead to more fungus or bacteria, but as long as it's preserved properly, you should be able to use them!

The active ingredients I add them in the cool down phase or in whichever phase ?
Many active ingredients do best in the cool down phase, but there are some that only work in a hot water phase. Please check the manufacturer’s suggestion of “how to use” when you purchase the ingredients.

Is stearic acid necessary with the emulsifier?
A fatty acid is necessary so cetyl alcohol or cetearyl alcohol would be good options too.
Is it true that the longer you mix the lotion, the thicker it gets?
not necessarily. Yes, sometimes it is a great help, but there is a possibility of causing your emulsion to become unstable by overmixing. This is why experimentation and logging every little thing you do in that experimentation is key.
Around five years back V05 planned to stop distributing it's Hair Conditioning Cream in Canada. I went all over the place and bought up what I could, but now it's long gone.
What I used to buy for around $5.00 a tube (1.5 oz) some people on Amazon and other beauty online outlets are now trying to sell for up to $70.00 a tube. There was no way I was going to put that kind of money out for a basic lanolin product whipped up just right.
A couple of days ago I found a 14 oz jar of DAX Pomade which has most of the oils, but it is like spreading thick grease.

I heated a teaspoon the DAX POMADE until just melted in the microwave, then tried to dissolve 1/2 teaspoon
of organic gelatin in the oil. Lots of mixing and still have undissolved gelatin. When it cooled down I added about 1/2 oz of
Aloe Vera Gel (from the Pharmacy) in and keep mixing. I read that it already had the emulsifiers in it.
It turned to kind of a thick foam, but is still too oily and feels gritty. I need oil for weight, but not that much oil. LOL

What is really crappy is that Canadians can not order it through USA's Walmart or Walgreens. They will not ship to Canada.

Hi. How would I go about mixing acetyl-l-carnitine powder with emu oil to help for neuropathy patients?
Acetyl-l-carnitine is proven for nerve regeneration and emu oil has been proven to absorb to the deepest layers of the skin.
I tried dissolving the acetyl-l-carnitine powder in the emu oil for 2 days, but the granules didn't dissolve, and was very "grainy" to the touch.
For example, should I maybe heat in a bowl over boiling water and then blend it with a kitchen whipper?
It won’t solubilize into oil, it is only soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol or water. So if wanted to add this to a product, you would need to solubilize it first. Were you hoping to add the Emu oil to the lotion, or were you hoping for the acetyl-l-carnitine to be added to only emu oil and nothing else?
@@EssentialLabsOfficial Yes, I was hoping to have a mixture of about 70-60% acetyl-l-carnitine and 40-30% emu oil. I wasn't necessarily looking to mix it in a lotion.
I actually tried mixing water with the acetyl-l-carnitine powder and letting it sit for a couple of days in a closed jar, hoping the powder would dissolve, but the solution is still quite "grainy" to the touch. I was hoping the granules would dissolve and not be in a solid state any longer, but this hasn't happened. Although I did use about 70% powder and 30% water. Because i thought the less water the better as far as mixing it with the emu oil. So maybe I would need to use more water for the powder to better dissolve?
I tried finding acetyl-l-carnitine in liquid form but I can only find it in powder form. You can find regular l-carnitine in liquid form but not acetyl-l-carnitine, and acetyl-l-carnitine is what I have read was successful for neuropathy patients.
If you were trying to make a solution of 70-60% acetyl-l-carnitine and 30-40% emu oil. How would you go about doing it?

Pls I made a lotion with 4% ewax and 3% cetyl alcohol. The cream has a lot of white rub in and feel waxy and makes sweat a lit on my face. What did I do wrong? Water was at 80% and oils at 10- 12%
While your ratios appear to be fine, have you experimented with different ratios on the ewax and cetyl alcohol? Perhaps lower the ewax to 3%. Also there are other things to consider and without knowing your recipe, it’s hard for me to help. For example, the first questions that came to my mind were: Are you using a gum as a thickener? What is your final pH of the product (this can make a huge difference)? Do you have an alkaline ingredient in the lotion as the fatty acids in the lotion combined with an alkaline ingredient would cause saponification? Would you be open to using a silicone, such as dimethicone?

Hi Mike! The common name is Emulsifying wax NF, and the formula is: Cetyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol, Polysorbate 60. Alternatives could vary, based on ingredients you use, so some research would need to be done first. Same for recommended percentages, there are a lot of factors that would make the necessary amount differ by product. However, you can use Cane Alcohol (not Isopropyl) or highest proof of Vodka at your local liquor store. We usually recommend about 15% start.
Can you substitute a butter instead of a thickening agent?
you could though they are 2 very different things. A thickening agent specifically is used to provide body, increase stability, and improve suspension of added ingredients. A butter is more there for emollience and moisturization. So if you use a butter, your final product won’t be as stable and you might see a massive amount of separation.
If I use a saturated fat like tallow, do I need to use steric acid?
Honestly none of us are familiar with the use of tallow, but since tallow contains stearic and isn’t actually stearic, I’m not really sure. Stearic acid is a saturated acid, whereas tallow is a combination of both saturated and unsaturated. I think the best thing to do is experiment and see what the outcome is like.
How can I keep it from separating. Which additive binds the water? Is it the emulsifying wax?
Hi there! Since this is an emulsion blend of oil an water; the emulsifying wax is actually what holds them together!
I've noticed, after heating both phases, a lot of people tend to add the water phase into the oil phase. Why did you add the oil into the water? Or does it not make a difference?
Many times it can make a difference. In our case, most of our products that contain less % in the oil phase and more in the water phase, we will add the oil into the water (easier to pour in small quantity into a larger quantity than vice versa). However there are a few ways that the phases can be added to each other and it’s actually fun to make the exact same product but then see a few ways to add emulsifier for a good emulsion.
You can add the emulsifier to be dissolved in the continuous (generally the larger concentration) phase, and then the internal phase (generally the smaller concentration) is slowly added with good agitation.
Another way is that the emulsifier can be dissolved in the smaller phase before slowly adding that blend to the water phase under agitation (most common method and the one we’re speaking of).

Why do i need a chelator in this case?
Hi! It helps boost the preservative. While we do use deionized water it's possible there are trace elements in the water (as in metal ions) and the chelator ensures those ions are bound, thereby ensuring the preservative will be full effective.
