I had the honor of meeting and talking with Ms. Sippie Wallace quite a few years ago. Magnificent lady, one of the great experiences of my life. I was also privileged to meet and talk with Dr. John a few times, and I've never been the same again. Absolutely one of the hippest, deepest people I've ever met.
Someone missed a bet by never compiling a Dr. John dictionary -- the words, expressions, and aphorisms he created -- apparently spontaneous, out of thin air -- were an art form in themselves, and we'll hever hear their like again.
Dr. John is probably the most underrated musician in mainstream American music culture. A master piano player and arranger. Who else could turn Silent Night into a jazzy R&B arrangement. If the only records in my music library were Dr. John’s, then I would consider it a very complete collection of great songs and talent.
Man U miss Mac he was a GREAT MAN and we had something in common which was we both lost a Daughter and I met him down on Bleeker st on the L E S of Manhattan and he helped me so much during the grieving process of the loss of my Daughter and he always had wonderful words of wisdom that were so warm kind and Spiritual and I will never forget his Friendship and he has a place in my Heart! RIP MAC!
Dr John was the first musician of my first concert ever in 1972. He opened for Alice Cooper during the "Schools Out" tour. I remember him coming out in his full New Orleans voodoo regalia. Right place at the right time!
i wasnt born until 75. wish i couldve seent mac back then. i did get his autograph at airport in denver. my copy of louis armstrongs bio. fitting. thanks nite tripper!
larry, any time you were fortunate enough to see Dr John was the right p;lace at the right time. I had at least 50 of those right times, with sippee, Bonnie, The meters and the nevilles. He was a class act and different than ANYONE else. He4 was the tripper that made MANY of my trips enjoyable ones. Hell I dont know what NOLA Jazzfest will be without him, except not as good.
So glad i got to finally meet you Mac . I waited 25 years and walked with you to your car and you asked me to hold you snake cane . That and seeing you live made my musical life complete. I keep playing piano and singing your tracks in my set 😎
Mac had been living in Mandeville, La. for awhile, before he passed. Maybe a $250,000.00 home. His health had been going down for some time. He was a humble man. We miss you Mac.
Damn it, why did he have to die! Someone gave me a Dr John DVD about 12 years ago. I've been a fan since . I love this guy for both his piano and his vocals!
I am part of the crowd that has been, up to now, unaware of Dr. John's artwork. As late as I am, I am now aware. Count me as a fan in perpituity from tis point forward. God bless you.
Bonnie's voice has a different sound when she's jacked, which I think she is here. No condemnation. It did the same to me. She's one of the best voices of the 20th century.
The legendary Dr. John playing with the truly great Paul Shaffer? Now that HAD TO BE a mutual admiration society - two musician's musicians. And Sippie, Bonnie and B.B. to boot - Thanks Don, this is fantastic!
Seeing Dr. John perform with Charles Brown was my favorite moment. That was special, among a bunch of special moments. I love this. Keeping it in my saved videos.
Great post. He was the real deal. Put on a tight show at Tipatina's back in the 90s in spite of the fact that he didn't own nor could perform many of the songs he was known for. Does anyone know if he was ever able to buy them back? Many musicians have with go fund me.
Dr. John is a legend, not just for his music, but for the eternity of our human species. I forgot how much he liked to spice up Christmas, lol 😄. Ha!, I used to play guitar with G-Love & Jeff (special sauce). . It seems like a lifetime ago, or another planet altogether. Maybe I shouldn't have quit. I would've jammed with Dr John on David letterman, lol Jeff plays so great. (Drums) I miss him ... I guess Garrett still plays his music. I'm sure he does
Don, been viewing your amazing work for awhile now. Just thought I'd drop in to say thank you and my sincere sympathy for the collective lose of another great, Dr. John.....some of the sweetest, finest tunes I ever danced, romanced, drank and fell in love to...Not necessarily in that order!! God Bless you, Doc! Sacha Littlefeather
Dr John soaked it all up like a sponge. I dont think The professer actually taught him, he just let him experience it and soaked it up. My life has been better for seeing them the many times I was lucky enough to do so. Jazzfest wont be the same, and it is the best venue and concert in the world as far as I am concerned.
Great compilation, Don. I especially like the call-out to Darlene Love @ 21:04, followed by Paul playing “(Christmas) Baby Please Come Home.” Wonderful foreshadowing of things to come.
Now you're doing the Lord's work Don!!:)His post Katrina album The City That Care Forgot-featuring Eric Clapton is so the real deal!!Any fan of NOLA music needs to check Make It Funky! The Music That took Over The World!Sony Pictures 2005-Neville Brothers,Keith Richards,BonnieRaitt,AllenToussaint,EarlPalmer(whoplayedonTimBuckley's last lp)I just highly recommend this to anyone viewing!!God Bless&Always Be Well,Mister Don!!
Upon close inspection of the "Goodnight Irene" clip, I do declare I see a "pre-bleach blonde" Chris Botti on trumpet in the horn section! Great compilation, the Doctor always brought something to the table.
I recognize Botti's chops anywhere! And in a previous clip on this compilation we also see "Blue Lou" Marini, Alan "Mr. Fabulous" Rubin, and again, Ronnie Cuber playing on "Accentuate the Positive"!
Lew Soloff, Alan Rubin, and Blue Lou backing up on "Merry Christmas Baby"! I couldn't make out the entire back row. Do you have those? Lew and Alan are gone now, so glad to see a clip of them both playing together again!
My personal recollections when I first heard Dr John on jazz radio with duet with Ricky Lee Jones. Listen to big band swing make believe ballroom and wbgo out if Newark and CD 101.9

Anyone who doesn't dig Dr. John has no music in thier
soul.RIP,Mac.
I had never heard of him but I now like him.
I still love watching him and Jools Holland as the Boogie Woogie Twins. ua-cam.com/video/dxK6dTcaJTc/v-deo.html
I miss my friend so much. I’m glad I can at least still watch him perform, thanks to UA-cam, but I sure do miss those crazy conversations!

RIP Mac. Man he's the whole city of New Orleans all by himself here damn!
I saw him on that same tour. In Orlando 1972. Amazing performer.
There will never be another. Thank God we still have his music. What a persona, what a talent!
i wasnt born until 75. wish i couldve seent mac back then. i did get his autograph at airport in denver. my copy of louis armstrongs bio. fitting. thanks nite tripper!

Love the old music they'd play on the show. Sure miss Letterman & Dr. John.

R.I.P to both B.B KING and DR.JOHN.
Awesome that Dave let The Doctor do his thing on national T.V. Rest In Paradise Dr. John.
Just thanks. Thankyou. The world's nonsense fades away when the Doctor plays... 😘
Man you can say that AGAIN!
Met his half-brother on Gentilly Ave. after leaving the Jazzfest for the Stones performance. Quite an honor!
Damn it, why did he have to die! Someone gave me a Dr John DVD about 12 years ago. I've been a fan since . I love this guy for both his piano and his vocals!
if only he could have lived forever like everyone else
I think he got old!
Not old enough
I am part of the crowd that has been, up to now, unaware of Dr. John's artwork. As late as I am, I am now aware. Count me as a fan in perpituity from tis point forward. God bless you.
Incredible talent. RIP Dr. John.
Dr. John, my favorite 9 fingered guitar player, lol, now that’s a story to hear, had a finger blown off in a pub and became a piano player! Lol
But still played guitar too....😘
Bonnie's voice has a different sound when she's jacked, which I think she is here. No condemnation. It did the same to me. She's one of the best voices of the 20th century.
The first one alone deserved a special award. Amazing.

the Doctor along with The Fess is the heart of Nawlins soul..........and Sippie was great...we've lost so many of the greats.Charles Neville too
Thank you for this collection man. You're doing your part in keeping the Doc alive!
The BB King performance in 1999 is for the ages...so much soul between 2 people
Thanks for collecting all this in one place, dude.

Sippy Bonnie Dr John now that's Blue's Music at it's Best!!
Letterman introduced me to many artists, Dr. John was one of the first. So thankful, great clips , thanks for sharing
Hi quality collection- THANK YOU- I missed most of these broadcasts. Tina and Doc can milk a phrase, geat horn section.
Thanx for showing us this dude!
Professor Longhair taught the good Doctor well!
And then the Doctor taught Jon Cleary
Dr John soaked it all up like a sponge. I dont think The professer actually taught him, he just let him experience it and soaked it up. My life has been better for seeing them the many times I was lucky enough to do so. Jazzfest wont be the same, and it is the best venue and concert in the world as far as I am concerned.
Thanks for this, I never watched letterman ( or much TV at all) but I DO love Dr John. RIP
Thank you, Don.
Thanks for putting this together. It’s always a pleasure watching the good doctor do his thing. Music for the soul!
Good lookin' out my brother. RIP The Mighty Night Tripper.
Great compilation, Don. I especially like the call-out to Darlene Love @ 21:04, followed by Paul playing “(Christmas) Baby Please Come Home.” Wonderful foreshadowing of things to come.
Keep On Keeping On Dr. I know that you and Leon are showing them how it's done up there at that great gig in the sky.
My fav continues to be "How come my dog don't bark when you come around?"
Barbara Brauer "super blue blade adjustable stainless steel will cut you both ways comin' and goin'"...
One of my family’s favorites as well! Hilarious!
Thank you so much! Such joy he spread through music will live on ,hopefully forever, thanks to you, in part.

Upon close inspection of the "Goodnight Irene" clip, I do declare I see a "pre-bleach blonde" Chris Botti on trumpet in the horn section! Great compilation, the Doctor always brought something to the table.
That’s indeed him. The two others are Ronald Cuber and Robert Malach.
I recognize Botti's chops anywhere! And in a previous clip on this compilation we also see "Blue Lou" Marini, Alan "Mr. Fabulous" Rubin, and again, Ronnie Cuber playing on "Accentuate the Positive"!
Good eye and ear. The latter were “The Uptight Horns.”
Lew Soloff, Alan Rubin, and Blue Lou backing up on "Merry Christmas Baby"! I couldn't make out the entire back row. Do you have those? Lew and Alan are gone now, so glad to see a clip of them both playing together again!
The only player I can easily recognize is Bruce Kapler, behind Soloff.
Wow!!! Thank you!!!!
Great job, Don.
R.I.P. Dr. John David Letterman Really Idolized Him
My personal recollections when I first heard Dr John on jazz radio with duet with Ricky Lee Jones. Listen to big band swing make believe ballroom and wbgo out if Newark and CD 101.9
