He’s not slow. He’s a genius. He took his time and spoke the truth. Dr. John is one of the coolest cats to ever walk the Earth. And that was a great interview that left me with even more respect for him than l had before.

I had the pleasure and the privilege of spending time in the presence of this great man several times -- for a few interviews, for a few off-the-cuff conversations -- and those are among the most cherished and treasured experiences of my life. One of the hippest, wisest, wittiest, deepest, and big-hearted people one could ever hope to meet.

I'll never forget a job I did down in New Orleans. We were taking the day off to hang out in the French Quarter. We come to Bourbon St, and there was a bar that they were dragging a piano out of. All of a sudden, Dr. John walks out and plays a couple tunes on the street. Coolest shit I've ever seen

I was born and raised in New Orleans myself, although now I live in the midwest, I truly do know what it means to miss New Orleans. I prefer to pronounce it like the good Dr, New Awlin's. @@ajcarr1965 Mac quoted a New Orleans-based activist (I forget who it was) about the catastrophic events that occurred in the wake of Katrina (e.g., the flooding that resulted from the Army Corps of Engineers' long-time decimation of the wetlands) -- When he said this, that voice of his growled with pure, unadulterated fury: "That was no 'Act of God' -- that was premeditated murder."
Meanwhile, speaking of Mac's ongoing and undying love (and sorrow) for his city, here's a song he wrote for -- and performed with -- bluesman Bobby Rush: ua-cam.com/video/iK1AdcX0Djg/v-deo.html

@@jazzmanchgo Great music. Thanks for the link. But I'll say the NOLA murder rate is more about crack cartels & California Marxists coming into the mix, than anything else. Before the 80s NOLA was one of the most laid back, safest cities in the US. After Katrina the real estate speculators came in to "rebuild" the city (ha. They bought & flipped.) & made it so expensive I couldn't go back if I tried; add in the poverty-pimping, race baiting violent Marxists who flooded in behind the speculators, & things have gotten ugly. It ain't Dr. John's Big Easy no mo.

Sat and was welcomed by the locals who were singing Iko Iko for a good half hour until the Doctor came on. That was 1997-been going back every year since...usually in April (from Canada). Oh, Iko Iko is in my band reptoire now-the Doctor`s version.
