Your video's opened my eyes to training tools, and especially the ecollar. I get choked up watching vids of dogs learning the ecollar because it's changed my relationship with my dog so much❤ Thank you Tom❤
Thanks for watching!
I’ve never been a remote collar person. When I was younger, I was taught how to used shock collars to train dogs and i hated it. Decades later, watching your videos on your remote collar for the past two years, I’ve decided to order one. 😊
❤❤❤ the way you make dog training so understandable is such a gift.
Thank you!
Glad to see the 280C back in stock. My new rescue has had a few months to get acclimated to me and my house, he's doing great with basics and ready for the next level of training!
Can we just take a moment to appreciate that beautiful riding ring 😍
It was nice
The goat of dog training ❤️

Tom is definitely the man. Not gonna lie, Cesar is a beast as well. Btw...ordered the new square tug. Should be here in a couple days. Waiting for the trucker hat to be back in stock. Lol. Watch ur videos all the time. Get my GSP the 26th. Keep doing what u do.
Love how clear the learning process is. Yeah, Mozzi!
Appreciate your passion for teaching humans and dogs.
Thank you!! Love to see people working with cattle dogs. Mine is coming along with low distraction, but reactivity has been a challenge. This is a vid I will be using to enhance obedience. I now understand how to get the down during recall. Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
I have the same issue with one of my cattle dogs! I have sisters from the same litter. Gorda, best dog ever. Amazing recall, always right at my heels when I’m trail running, not aggressive whatsoever with dogs or people, just literally the absolute BEST. I never even had to train her, she just gets it.
Her sister tho….. nah. She’s so sweet and smart, but BOY does she bully dogs. If she smells any type of weakness in them, she’s just at them like they’re cattle. If they stand up to her and fight back, she’s okay with them 🙄🙄 I’m kinda at a loss on what to do with her behavior. I’m not sure if she’s genuinely aggressive or if she’s just a jerk who needs to be put into her place by a bigger dog.
Learned something new this video! Thank you so much so appreciated
I finally have found a trainer I can truly look up to and learn from. After starting purely compulsion, then venturing into the R+ world only, I had to find myself over and over again as a trainer. And now I have found the trainer who I can truly vibe with who is actually balanced and fair. Hopefully one day I can meet him and learn from him and pick his brain! This guy has truly made a huge impact on me as a dog trainer and I couldn’t be more grateful
Awesome, Tom. Thank You! Always learn something new when I watch your videos.
Thanks for watching!
Another amazing video
Tom, you are such a pleasure to watch! Well done!👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you kindly!
Well done!
These videos are the best. I know that my rescue dog would benefit greatly from this. Truly the best tool. At the moment i can't afford one so trying to find some other solution in the meantime.
That dog reminds me of my Aussie. Slow to down from a sit and I haven’t gotten him to do it when coming toward me. I have a 280c coming and will be introducing it as shown in your videos. Love the channel!
I've also debated using an e collar on my small dog whose a teddy roosevent terrier. He may be small, but he's still a hunting breed, and he's superr smart and clever. He loves to please but also will for sure walk over you if allowed to. I haven't taught heel outside and i rlly should. I definitely need to start with a slip lead at least to teach him right from wrong, and more treats to truly let him know what i do expect of him. So much to learn and i love it!!
The confusion around whether or not to use e-collar training or prongs etc is overwhelming. I absolutely love your videos and your training approach. As a new handler I am so confused by the divide between trainer ideology. I just want to do what’s best for my dog.
When I started 4 months ago, I never knew about the ideologies. I was lucky enough to not being confused because it all made sense with my dog - Bull Arab 65kg /120lb - he behaviour need to change. I watched many videos and eventually subscribed to Toms Club and Robert Cabral. The videos were well worth it and cemented my thoughts of the ideology. I highly recommend subscribing (even for a month) and you can stop the confusion - either Balnced training vs Positive reinforcment only. It becomes an easy decision in my opinion - hope this helps you in your journey
Love my 280c!….game changer for me & my mal..👍
Wooo hooo !
I just ordered mine off Amazon. It's coming here on Monday. It honestly kinda hurt it being like $260 but I know it's going to be easy to use, and SAFE for my dog. I seen someone on a different channel test some of the cheap Amazon ones on themselves and it was literally painful.
Awesome video 🎉
Thank you!
YES!! More cattle dogs please?!
This is amazing
Thanks so much!
thank you for the response! I love your balanced approach to dog training!
I find that it’s extremely difficult to find dog training videos featuring smaller dogs and their specific needs like a yorkie’s sensitive neck. It’s nice to know that a lot of the techniques should translate over.
I see you use slip leashes and prong collars on larger dogs in training dogs to walk without pulling etc. would you suggest the same technique also work for yorkies in light of their sensitive tracheas?
Love a smart Heeler
Same!!
cool!
Hey Tom quick question about your e collar training course-
Do you also go over when/how to transition your dog to the corrective phase? Or does the course focus only on the learning/compliance phase?
I never seen the way to reinforce and expand on a command while walking away!!! Learned a lot from that how ppl can walk away far away and the dog still stays there.
I've always used e collars to train my dogs to come horseback riding with me.
I have a question my dog was in training for 2 weeks and they stimulated him to use the e-collar (mini educator) he is a mini goldendoodle about 18lbs. I started to watch a lot of your videos and I like your e-collar do you think it will be recommended to change e-collar for him ? Also I ordered few item from your website 👌🏻 do you think he will get confused if I change e-collar ? He just finished his training few days ago and Im still practicing with him at home everyday
Great video, love your style. How well would this collar work on my long haired Husky/Australian Shepard mix?
Thanks! It would work great
You may have to buy longer prongs to make sure it has correct contact
How can you be sure that your dog feels the stimulus, especially when working with a heavily coated dog? Something like a pyr, samoyed, bernese, etc.
Well my cheapo collar has up to 18 levels; level one tickles my wrist so is it safe to assume that it's too much for my 26lb pup? I just use the beep and the vibrate.
Yes
Hi thanks for your videos it’s helped with my Rottweiler puppy. Just a little confused as to the recall.
After the process of using treats, slip leash , prong collars and e collars - do you eventually phase out those tools at some point ?
Is the goal to get to a point where e collars and treats aren’t needed anymore for recalls ?
I think it honestly depends on the dog, but in most cases the training tools should be weaned off. But “tune ups” may always be necessary and beneficial.
As of e collars, think of them like a seat belt. So you wouldn’t stop using a seat belt just because you understand the concept of it.
I think my thing is when do u stop using it for basic stuff.... And will the dog listen after it's been taken off.
Tom i love your work but you tell how many time or how many rep we do with a dog in training session
Thanks, 10 minute short and sweet sessions throughout the day!
Or brother
Do you use buzz or shock?
Id love to know if youre coming back to the UK at any point ?
Yes be there in September! tomdavis.eventsmart.com/events/united-kingdom/
@@tomdavisofficialyou need to invite some of the MPs local to the area of your UK seminar so they can be educated on the use of e collars and what they are and how they work. Wish I could come to your uk seminar as I have a GSD x lab who is reactive to other dog as she got attacked by dogs when she was a pup but I can’t afford a ticket
280c or arc for a very stubborn lab?
Am I able to add links to the Herm. Sprenger prong collars? This will be for my 8 week old Black GSD working line puppy to start training. Judging from my last GSD pup his neck was around 11"-14" roughly. So am I able to add and remove links or do I have to buy new collar as he grows? Thanks!
Yes. Watch a Tom Davis prong collar video. It will explain this. Also your puppy may not need a prong that early. I suggest trying a lot more reinforcement methods first with that puppy. And maybe a slip leash. But a prong can be a lot of pressure for some dogs and I wouldn’t need want your pup to shut down cause you started using it at the beginning of their training.
This is really good but this dog is pretty stable and strong
Can you please do a beginning remote on a very skittish over aroused, worried dog like my Border Collie
He has a lot of videos on dog’s similar to how you have described your Boarder Collie.
I have many.
@@Missfoxtooyou oh thank you can you tell me what one of them are called you’re right there are so many and I can’t go through them all
@@tomdavisofficial would you be kind enough to tell me what it’s called because you have so many videos I can’t go through the mall I’d love to see one with a reactive overstimulated dog. Thanks too
How do you feel about using remote collars on smaller dog breeds like a yorkie?
I'd like to know too.. we have a 7lb Yorkie
The same I do another using it on a GSD! Small dogs deserve training, they are dogs too.
Good demo. Question, she repeated the command 2 and 3 times when revealing. Should she have stopped at once?
yes
Sadly the remote collar is illegal in my country.. I wish I could use it the way you explain it.
I run my pack of 6 off of 1 E-collar!!! Its on my German shepard, he loves it. He hates when i charge it bc he knows he has to wait for it back!!! He gathers everyone up for the beep and everyone come to the door and waits
Is it worth trying to keep a smart dog from becoming collar aware? Will they figure it out eventually, and if so is it even worth trying to avoid?
The goal is help the dog understand the collar is you. This happens with consistent practice and patience.
Yes but how do you stop the collar not becoming the cue to come rather than the call or whistle. At some stage you would need to fade the e collar rather than have to rely on it perminantly
You answered your own question. You fade it out over time. The dog learns to come without needing the e-collar, but having the e-collar there as a back up in case of distractions, like loud noises and lots of people or other animals is helpful.
@@jordancrowe87 having just been to a Michael Ellis 3 day seminar that really is not the message he was imparting - his dogs have e collars on (but not in use) since puppy hood and then introduced to the use of them later in training. He was quite concerned that the continual use of very low level stimulation in training COULD lead to the dog becoming conditioned to the low level stimulation - say for ‘come’ - as the cue rather than the verbal or signal command. Then you have your dog fully relied on the e collar stimulation as the cue and would be very hard to fade.
I can't speak to what he says. I just know from my own personal experience with my working dog, where we started out with a leash and then using an e-collar for recall, and now I can use a verbal cue, a whistle, or a stem from the e-collar for recall.@@sallyhollis47
Also, my dog has an e-collar on all day long. I would say 99.9% of the time I don't need to use it. I really only use it when we are working on a new task that I am teaching her during her daily training sessions.@@sallyhollis47
🥰🥰🥰
Tom- you should offer your services to Commander the Biden’s GSD! What a great opportunity that would be. Especially for Commander!😂
You were on Fox on the topic! Looking good. Hope you make the offer to Commander.
Brought a ecolar the no bad dog one very nice very Good the only problem for me is that my GSD reacts a bit too much to the vibration lol he will instantly puts his head down and zoom back to me. Some might say it's not a problem but then he just sticks to me like a fly on a turd 😂😂 and will stay like that for ever lol
Are you able to turn it down further or is that one the lowest number?
Well that’s the point of the pager, it’s a heavy correction. So I hope you’ve taken my course to introduce it the proper way!
@@tomdavisofficial oh he's getting paid cuddle 🤗 and hugs when he recalls well.pager = getting paid, but he reacts a lot to it it's instant magnet to me.but he's hard to free after, I'll try to find the course thanks
@@amberbiggs the pager is only vibration no 'shock' but like stated in the video the knick or shock should be used gently and paid off on desired behaviour
That looks like the same type of dog as "Skidboot"
If the collar is only used at low levels, ie the dog just feels a "stimulation" what's the difference between that and say a dog whistle which to the dog would be a "stimulation." If this is the case the e collar is rather an expensive dog whistle
Not all dogs have the ability to hear, and if a whistle had a strong stimulation in high level distractions which could be life threatening, then e collars would not exist. The low levels are an introduction to learn to shut it off, as well it’s paired to the owners voice.
@@Missfoxtooyou Most dogs are not deaf/hard of hearing and there is no mention with e training that it’s targeted at deaf/hard of hearing dogs, just ordinary dogs. I understand that up to around 10 (or a device calibrated from 1 to 100) the sensation is mild, not unpleasant, a sort of tingle, it’s around 60 to 80 volts. Above that the sensation becomes progressively unpleasant and at maximum settings it will be anything between 1,500 to 3,000 volts. So if the dog is sufficiently distracted that it will not respond to the low level (or a dog whistle) then I suppose the idea is to raise the level at which it will be definitely unpleasant to the dog at which it will respond, simply because the sensation is unpleasant and strong. It may obey the command or simply stop doing whatever it was not supposed to do. But the latest scientific evidence is that this will raise the overall anxiety of the dog. A human will do things to avoid the unpleasant sensation and is able to work out mentally what that is, in the same way as a boy in a school that has corporal punishment can work out what behaviours to avoid, and therefore relax instead of being fearful of when he may get caned. But a dog may not have that capacity. It lives in the moment and will respond to commands provided they are repeated many times for these to become habit for the dog. So that would entail giving the dog a major distraction, giving the command and setting the e collar to high settings and doing this many times so the dog “get’s it.” In reality the dog will remember the unpleasant sensations and instead of relaxing and behaving, will become more fearsome and anxious. I am afraid it’s down to a poor leadership relationship with the dog if the dog does not obey a command when distracted. If you think about leadership relationships, in the most strongest ones people will be prepared to die for their leader. So if your dog does not obey your recall in all situations, keep it on a lead!
@@JanSilins I would love to read the articles as well their sources and experiences of personally using an e collar. A lot of scientists are giving out false information on a tool they have never used. What was the variable when they “conducted this research”. Was the dog stable, nervous, poor genetics, or neutral? What was the environment like? What units of e collars did they PERSONALLY use? K9 police use the e collars here as well in the States. I respect that you may not need or want to use a tool. But do not minimize what it can do for another handler. I 100% agree a relationship with a dog and handler are the above else the most important. But this is an animal, and it’s going to act on its desires, which could mean going off to chase a wild animal while on a hike or insert various scenarios. You have led previous comments that minimize this tool, it’s not for you and that’s okay. Lastly, I do not need you to try to mansplain the uncomfortable feeling the dog may receive at higher levels nor did I say most dogs are deaf or hard of hearing. But a lot of dogs that are unable to hear have been able to benefit from the stimulation of a e collar vs a “expensive dog whistle” .
The thing with the e-collar is it's very black & white and easier to be precise. You want it to shut off the second the dog does the command. Blowing in a whistle until that point can be difficult if the dog is distracted. Also, what happens if someone else is blowing a whistle? How will the dog know the difference?
If something is getting your dog‘s attention (say your dog has a high prey drive and he sees a squirrel ir he‘s reactive and is triggered by another dog) a dog‘s hearing can get very selective. He would be too much in the zone to actually react to your voice and even a whistle wouldn‘t get him out of that. Since dogs are very tactile animals (touch is huge for them and so much more effective than just sound) they will respond so much better to the eCollar. I don‘t think a whistle is bad, they are just different and the eCollar is more reliable.
what collar is that? im tired of these cheap quality amazon e collars breaking on me
