[GL][T-183] ENHANCED EMDs: SD60E Explained + GE Dash 8.5, SD40E, GP59E, MP15E & Slugs | Trains 21

- Norfolk Southern's various locomotive rebuilding programs have given train spotters some of the most visually unique and interesting diesel locomotives in North America.. Two of its "Crescent Cab" recipients are the somewhat successful EMD SD60E and the moderately failed GE Dash 8.5.. Both are products of resurrected 1980s & 1990s engine technology and both rebuilding programs were scrapped in favor of DC-to-AC rebuilding programs..

Nice video Dave! We talked last week if you forgot. But if you're into model railroading I'm doing a give away on my channel! Ho scale
@@andrewstrainstuff1773 I haven't forgot.. I'm doing a shout-out video on Monday.
Ok. Alright thankyou.
@@andrewstrainstuff1773 Shout-out will have to wait till end of the week.. Sorry, but I got bogged down on some very important matters.
@@Trains21 it's ok man, dont worry. I understand, in fact thankyou for even putting time into this whole channel. If you weren't here to teach us 11000 people about trains then we wouldn't have a clue what they'd be called. Thanks. Dont stress it.
AC, you are Chock Full of a Lot of Railroad Facts. WOW, your Railroad knowledge is Off the Charts, Impressive. Thanks 🙏 for sharing ALL this info. 👍
I love your videos! I'm a train fanatic but I don't know nearly as much as you do.Thanks to you, I have come to respect NS for saving the old locomotives, UP just parks theirs out in the desert waiting for a buyer. I model BNSF post merger and I love the colors on my layout. NS has many different types of locos but most are just black. Really sad considering how much effort goes into restoring and maintaining those old horses!
I drove a SD50 on CSX as a kid, CSX had one in Cumberland shops. My dads cousin was working there and we took a tour of the place and then, Boom! I was driving 8560
I think this channel has really helped me a lot to stay in touch with trains and know all these little details that are happening in the present day.
I see the SD60Es and SD40Es quite often as local power! Thanks for the info on these great EMD units!
It is great that NS is rebuilding locomotives and improving fuel efficiency and emissions. One question: were the GP-59 locomotives purchased primarily for the roadrailer service
Once again another great video
Thanks Steven.. I don't know if GP59s were purchased for intermodal or not.. I would say "no" due to their lower horsepower but I could be wrong.
Damn your videos are so well done. This is professional work man
Excellent Video and very well explained! ,You officially have a new subscriber here in Australia
Excellent video! I love history and your breadth of knowledge is very impressive. Well done!
SD60E’s are hands down my favorite NS locomotive ever. If they ever rebuild them I will be so sad.
I love these in depth looks at these locomotives..thanks again AC.
Wow. Amazing video AC! Thank you for all the info! I remember seeing NS 6900 with NS 8104 last year.
I learned a few more things again. Excellent video AC.
You provide a wealth of information in your videos. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
Awesome video! But you made an error on NS D8.5 8505 at 17:56. The cab on 8505 was actually a GE Dash 9 style cab. Not an ES44AC Style cab. You can tell it's a dash 9 cab from the window and nose design. 8505 had 2 small oval shaped windows on each side in front of the bigger rectangle shaped windows. Likewise with the Dash 9s unlike the ES44AC which have 2 rectangle windows on both side of the cab and windows. The nose also had no void in the nose light area unlike the NS ES44AC cabs which do have voids like that. Never the less this is a well made video and is very informative. Awesome work!
i really love watching your videos, i have been learning lots from this, keep up the great work
Super info. Loving this channel for the detailed info, chime set for all.
Another Information Tsunami! Great Stuff! I am in the "just in case you missed it" category. Lookin at your earlier video's as I can.
YEAH, and whats does a tsunami do,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,IT OVERWHELMS YOU.............I wish he would slow down a little and make all this information a lot more interesting............it's hard to grasp half of what he tells us............
Excellent AC you are still making great filming and video I love then
Thanks AC! You never disappoint!
As always, I love these detailed “explainer” videos, thanks AC, well done sir!
14:16 Love that shot of the old CRR of NJ/PA freight station. I first found out about the CNJ's CRR of PA endeavor when I used to volunteer at a place called Pine Creek Railroad in Farmingdale NJ. Railroad historian Tom Gallo, who is a good friend of mine, stopped by one day and pointed out the truck frames on 2 boxcars on site that are used for storage. The carbody is painted and labeled for the CNJ but the truck frames say CRR of PA, and Tom explained to me that the CNJ used the subsidiary company of CRR of PA as a gimmick to weasel their way out of NJ state taxes. Needless to say it didn't fly, as evidenced by the shameful patch job on the freight station's label...
Regardless, it's great to see that it was left "as is" instead of being repainted in modern days. It brings about a significant level of historical accuracy you just don't see often anymore.
I agree Bryson, I'm glad that you took notice and I thank you for watching.
Great info video.
hey there AC I'm new to the channel, and so far not disappointed. keep it up----fun listening to this stuff after a long day---really!!!
Good Question
Outstanding video AC great information
Great video ac, I thoroughly enjoyed it 👍👍
Sadly are done with SD70ACC program as they sold off the remaining SD70 standard cabs only to have 3 of them still in active roster.
Excellent info! Thanks!
👍👀🚂 Great Job AC
Wouldn’t be surprised if the next engines on the auction block are the SD60Es
Amazing.... Lots of love from an Indian railfan❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks from America!
Absolutely fantastic! I look forward to your videos!
Awesome information!
Good video, I enjoyed it.
Rip all ns locomotives for sale right now
Sucks that the veterans unit lost it's nice horn
First, even though GE -8 outsold EMD 60 Series, they weren’t better, in my opinion.
I really think that the SD60E program was to circumvent EPA tier 4. Both manufacturers had trouble meeting the new standard. I think the rebuilding program was to have units ready if there were bugs with tier 4. This is because the rebuilt units are grandfathered to the older emission standards.
wow this was amazing and excellent info Thanks :-)
You're welcome.. Thanks for watching Erik
@@Trains21 hey train21i see a emey in your future The nominee for best train knowledge :-D
@@erikmcc804 Now that would be something! Thanks for the kind words!
I would just like to say, 6900 was involved in the Graniteville, SC collision before it was rebuilt
Interesting, I didn't know that.
@@Trains21 ua-cam.com/video/NxreriSmr_4/v-deo.html here's a link, a video by Thunderbolt was how I found out
Way to go AC ! Love how you research and give explanations to all the different models they have out there. It answers alot of the questions I had in my mind. But one thing that puzzled me was why they would derate an engine down in horsepower? Was it strictly for a fuel consumption advantage or had they come up with the ability to get the same job done with less and saving fuel at the same time.
KCS Retired All SD50's as of Last Year all which went to LTEX
As soon as I heard the 8.5 / C40-8 program was cancelled, I thought where are the engines going too?
I've seen other funeral trains, but no destination.
I’m gonna give NS about 5-10 years (which is generous) before they decide to sell off the SD60Es. Other news I hope they at least considered saving and repainting a SD80MAC and donating it, can’t sell off all the “Conrail Cadillacs”
Cool video. Love this series.
I caught the 8500 on the wnyp last year
Lot of info. Thx. I'll stick with my Yellowstones, Northerns and Texans. :)
The cab on the 60E is ugly, standard looked better. Another great informative video! Thanks for all your hard work.
This should be good 🍿
Have you been to the Tioga Central Railroad? It looks like you have unless someone else took the photo of WCOR 309. I have been there many times and now they relocated the station stop. Is the video at 18:00 in Lemoyne, PA?
I took the picture of the #309.
Love them on service
Did you know ns 6653 was one engines involved in the Graniteville sc chlorine disaster. It was leading ns 192 when it collided with local p22
Thank you.. I did not know that!
@@Trains21 your welcome
That Was Before It Was Rebuilt Into A SD60E It Was Taken To The Juniata Shop's Repaired And 5 Years Later It Was Rebuilt Into A SD60E
@@tooatease3858 that is correct
At 11:40 do you have that video posted separately and in full length(edited)?
There’s 4 GP50’s on the railroad I railfan, Indiana & Ohio Railroad. They’re all ex-BN
Wow, I didn't realize that they had them.. I'll have to make it a point to see them in 2022. Thanks for the info.
Heres more of Norfolk southerns wierd ass creations they have rebuilt from older locomotives: SD70ACC (rebuilt from an SD70 body, the cab of an SD70M, and has the nose of an SD70ACE) SD70ACU ( replaced the traditional SD40E helpers on the Pittsburg division, and was basically an SD70ACE cab put on the body of an SD9043MAC) what's next? An SD80ACE? ( Which Would have the cab of an SD70ACE, and the body of the SD80MAC, but norfolk southern already sold their SD80MACS to canadian pacific, or progress rail equipment leasing company
The he dash 8.5 is weird I am glad that be got rid of them
Awesome...... !
I thought GE already had split cooling on the dash 9 no/
Literally everything here has been sold or is being sold
9:17 The SD60MAC is cursed
how do you find out the trains symbols?
You should talk about Talgo cars
Nice video man! I’m just not the biggest fan of the SD60E and the SD70ACC because their cabs are ugly and it’s sad to see their original cabs gone and also that just puts less and less SD70’s and SD60’s in existence.
I must be the only one that actually likes how their cabs look lol. I think the SD60E looks mean.
And that's what improvement means, everything can't be the same after years and years, they needed it to survive this era of railroading and afterall these sd60e's sd70acc's are just cab replacements and rebuilts to fit the new railroad safety regulations lol
So it was stronger then the Amtrak EMD F40PH/F40PHR locomotive's???
Yes.
@@Trains21 OK. What locomotive was the EMD F40PH stronger then other then the SDP40F and P30CH???
@@graphtonix6607 The F40PH had a horsepower rating of 3,000-3,200 so anything less than that.
@@Trains21 Dose that mean that every other locomotive was always stronger then the F40PH???
@@graphtonix6607 Anything over 3,200 hp.
