- Fixing a pocket door without removing anything. Disclaimer: this is if the part that came off is closer to the handle side, not the side that mainly stays inside the pocket. Also, I do not know the correct terms for these things and am not sure if "flathead nail" is even a real term... I just labeled the parts with words that made sense to me or what I thought they were called. Sorry there's not an actual picture, but I wasn't going to take the door down again to take it :)
Good luck.
I used your technique and had my door fixed in 5 min., can't thank you enough.
What a life saver. Got mine fixed in 5 minutes after messing with it for hours yesterday.
Fantastic advice. We used fishing line and just looped it over. Worked great! Thanks so much!
Thank you very much!....this proved to be a very effective and simple fix to a potentially expensive and lengthy repair... our door has been off track for almost two years...hoped there was a simple and nonintrusive repair but could not find one until today...thanks again for taking the time to post this repair.....
You are a genius. We had worked on the door for over 30 min before we found your video. 10 min later and the door was back on...and that was with the door completely off the track. Thank you!
This was so helpful. I used a coathanger instead of string. Your amazing explanation helped me to fix my door without having to do a major project. Thank you!!!
After fighting with this door all morning, this solution took seconds! Thank you!
It took 2 doctors, a financial analyst, and a single chopstick to make this happen. BUT WE DID IT.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
You are a genius. The carpenter said that he should take the track out and fixed it. With your simple string thing it worked from the first try 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
You just save me from having to pull the molding off the door frame. Great idea and worked like a charm in less than two minutes.
With no string available, we used a metal clothes hanger and it worked like a charm! Thanks so much for the help!
Brilliant! My husband (and various friends) tried fixing this for probably at least a couple of hours over the past week. He was about to start taking off the trim tonight when we saw your video, and had it fixed in about 15 minutes! He said your diagram was perfect, as he did not realize there was a slot in the metal bracket until he saw your drawing. He used a clothes hanger instead of string, and bent a very narrow hook on the end so he had plenty of strength to tightly fit the "metal thingy" into the slot. He then wiggled the hanger out carefully. Worked like a charm! All the other videos we saw were for a different type of hanger assembly, so - again - this was perfect. Thanks so much for posting!!
Thank you for a second time. Your video helped me the first time. It came off again a couple of years later. I couldn't remember how I fixed it the first time and found your video again. Bookmarked it this time. Thanks so much for taking the time to make the video. Those of us with older homes have a hard time finding handywomen as good as Sandra.
I, too, sing your praise, this fixed my door without the extreme hassle of taking it apart! Many many thanks!!
You saved me $200+. Your clever solution worked. Thank you for posting this!
These instructions worked perfectly. I used fishing line... took me about a minute to repair and get it back on track. Thank you so much for your ingenuity and guidance.
OMG, this literally took us under 3 minutes! The other videos are recommending removing the molding? Are you kidding me? Thank you SO much for this video.
Pretty easy to remove the molding/trim, and you'll have to if the problem is anything but this uncommon one. It's pretty dang easy, just use a utility knife to cut the caulk (if any) then pry using a couple small prybars built for the purpose. Some pocket doors even have the trim held on with screws in anticipation of maintenance, actually more common with stained wood type rather than painted.
That was the perfect visual. Thank you posting this. We are under contract to sell and I was worried I would have to get a carpenter out here to fix the door. You saved me untold $$$$.
Just fixed the door. Made one adjustment to your suggestions and it helped. Instead of using string, I used a few heavier duty twist ties. That was useful to be able to semi tighten around the screw, so that the 'string' wouldn't fall, and also that not only could I pull the 'string', I could push it too. That made it easy to get it positioned in place between the screw and the plate. Thanks again, you just saved me $100 repair!!
It worked like a charm. Took me less than 10 minutes. Thank You
Sandra, this is absolutely what I needed! Thank you so much. Two of my grandsons were wrestling and knocked the pocket door off track. (Luckily, just the front top roller and not the back top roller.) I looked and looked on youtube for a way to fix this without removing trim or taking the door out. Your diagram (with the string attached ABOVE the adjustment nut) was perfect. All I had to do was put some shims under the door to level and raise it. Then the string worked like a charm! I then used a coat hanger to push the plastic fastener in place. You saved me probably a couple of hundred dollars in handy man and painting cost. Thanks, again!
Holy LIFESAVER!!! Such an easy solution. String.. who would've thought? Thank you so much
This was the easiest fix for our pocket door. Once I used a sting, not tread, or floss, it worked the second attempt. Thanks cannot say enough.
I worked for an hour. I didn't realize there was another slot besides the locking bracket until I saw your video. I couldn't see up there and was going by feel. The string trick worked inside of ten minutes. Thanks!
WONDERFUL !!! Got the door back on track in less than 2 minutes !! Thanks for posting !!
Thank you. This was exactly what I needed to see. I had the door all apart and was still trying to figure out how to get it all back together. Your string trick worked great and I had it back together it about 5 minutes or so.
Excellent explanation. You have given me hope to try this this week.
An amazing picture instruction. I’m getting my string and screwdriver 🪛 right now!
thank you for this video Ma'am.my pocket had just one swinging latch and it was metal. I used dental floss to tie a knot around the bolt . took a few tries but your method was successful. I used a bamboo chopstick to push the metal hook shut. didn't have to call my boyfriend or anything! broken pocket doors are the devil's work
OMG!!! It’s like a miracle! Sandra thank you for your clever and clear instructions. I used heavy duty floss, and a flat ended chopstick as my tools. Used a book to prop up the door and a dinner knife on top of that to slowly raise the door up so it was in position.
I'm pretty mad at myself for not thinking of the string myself. You saved me a LOT of time and pain. Thanks!
Thanks to this AWESOME video, we now can fix our stupid slider (which constantly comes off its tracks) in about a minute flat. Clear and well-explained.
An absolute lifesaver in time and money.......Thank you, thank you, thank you. Centering the roller part can be tricky, and yes, use a strong string that can tolerate the hard "yank" that will "snap" it in place. We had to pull the door down at an angle to get the part centered, then placed the door back up. One good pull did the trick.
I can't thank you enough. The trick with the string is GENIUS! I was trying to fix our door for days! With this little trick it took me couple minutes. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
OMG THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOUUUU!!!!! 9 LONG years, yes I said NINE! I have been trying to fix our pocket door with absolutely no luck. All I needed was the visual and the string and voila my door is fixed! Absolutely perfect drawing and directions. You have completely made my day/week/year!
You are a genius!!! Thank you so much, I would have waited at least 6 months on my husband to fix it, but with your help I did it in 5!!!! Thanks so much Sandra!!!
I completely understand lol. My hubby is the techy computer guy; I'm the home repair person... It works out alright though
It took you five months to fix the door?
Matthew Neal ? No, about 5 min. - after I figured out a way to do it.
The string is genius! We have the same sort of mechanism and your solution worked like a charm without removing any trim. Nice job!
I had my doubts but this totally worked!! Thank you, thank you. It even worked for the back roller but we had to take the first roller off, use a straightened hanger to fetch the back roller from inside the wall, take the rollers out the front to screw the bolts back on to it, slide hem back in and then use the string method to get them back in to the door brackets starting with the back roller first, then front. Worked like a charm!!
Great info...I did have to take one small piece of trim down in order to get the door out of the doorway but your drawing and video was ON SPOT! Thanks for the drawing and the information.
Thanks for sharing your video! If the door came off with the casing on, it should be able to go back together again. Your string trick was genius! Great fix! Took less than 3 minutes! Thanks for sharing!!! 👍🏼👍🏼 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is genius!!! After doing some searching I was a bit concerned about removing the trim around the door till I found this video. My door fell off the wheels just like yours did. Your diagram made a lot of sense. As you mentioned, use thicker string, I did not have any issues. Suggestion that may be logic, but wasn't mentioned is to tie the loop VERY loosely so the knot can be untied when the door is in place. I just twisted the loop at the stud so it didn't fall off.
Again, thank you for posting this great tip so I didn't have to tear up the door frame and trim!!
I thought this might be an option and then confirmed it with your video. I got it fixed in under 10 minutes this way, but had a tough time getting the string fully removed. I had to use small, very sharp scissors and snip away at the base of it. Other than that, a great solution. Thank you!
Very good detailed drawing & explanation. My exact same problem!
You are a life saver - what a neat idea, and it works!!
Only your Video and a piece of dental floss got my door back on track. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!! Best video on the subject.
Thank you SOOOO much!! My husband had called a handyman to come in and fix it...but thanks to you, I did it myself!!
Sandra Grant, Dietitian you're welcome :)
Thank you so much! This was driving me nuts! I thought I was going to have to take the thing apart. I thought of holding the slider but was using the equivalent of an old wire hanger and it wasn't working. The string was simple genius. Thank you!!
Great tip. Worked great and quickly.
THANK YOU! Just saved me from having to take my door off and your solution worked *perfectly*. Thank you thank you thank you!
String = Brilliance ; Thank you for your help and explanation.
Thanks a million. What should have taken us the designated time you explained took 2 step ladders, two flashlights, 1 chisel to hold the door up, the very important shoe lace & two inept people (husband & wife, who should never do wallpaper together or try to re- hang a pocket door!!) about an hour before we finally got it up & working. Anyway it's working again thanks to your instructions. Another marriage saved!! K & D
Really helpful suggestion that really worked!. It certainly saves having to remove the door trim just to re-hang the door on the runner
Thank you Sandra, so helpful! I was able to fix my pocket door in less than a minute after watching your tip. :-)
OMG best idea. Worked spectacularly.
YES! Worked like a charm on one of our pocket doors. Great idea, but even greater idea to then put it up on the Interwebs.
IT WORKED... IT WORKED!! THANK YOU SO MUCH....EVERY OTHER SOURCE SAID TO REMOVE MOULDING.... THIS WAS A LIFE AND MONEY SAVER SINCE I COULD NOT REMOVE AND RESTORE THE MOULDING MYSELF...
This was so helpful and a super easy fix. Thanks for sharing this and your excellent explanation!
Worked like a charm! Thank you!
Thank you Sandra! This is one of the best explanations I found , makes perfect sense and it worked first try! Needed 2 people to make it easier.
Brilliant! Worked like a charm...super easy and handy hack that was quite the time saver!
Good diagram - well explained! Thanks!
Thank you! You are a problem solving genius.
awesome video, took about 13 seconds to fix it after watching, used a long drill bit to push the pin into the slot
Great job - thanks for the video! Your instructions were perfect, and we fixed the door. We actually wound up using dental floss (double thickness) to hold the pin, and instead of eye liner we used dental floss to pull the locking mechanism into place as well.
Awesome! I used heavy fishing line, tied just an overhand knot, and after getting in slot pulled a little harder and the fishing line came off. The only thing that is hard to tell is if it locked securely, time will tell. Meanwhile it slides beautifully. Thanks!
Thanks for doing the video!! That is exactly what I needed to learn so as to fix my pocket door.
You are awesome! Thank you for the tips, I was able to do it by myself.
Thank you. This was excellent and took less than the minutes. Best instructional video above all.
You are the best It took an hour to line it up and lock it It worked !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You are a genius! Thank you😊
Oh, my, G8 instructions! It works! It took me longer than 10 minute but mainly because my genes are more of the un-handyman type and eye liner pencils don't live in my house (clever you). An unsharpened pencil works too. And thanks Barry T below for the floss suggestion. Mint flavored works best.
thank you so much for this! i was doing the same thing (with floss, though) but was just getting so frustrated I was ready to give up, but your video gave me the confidence to persist and now it's fixed! sometimes youtube really is great.
Thank you, this solved my problem immediately! Saved me a ton of time and hassle!
Thanks so much. Your solution worked perfectly. Now my wife thinks I'm a genius. Thanks again.
Just put my door back using this video. Thanks so much! 👍🏻 Floss works too (couldn't find any string) 🤓
Thank you! Worked perfectly!
Fantastic... worked like a charm :) great detail explanation as well... Thank You
BEST SOLUTION TO MY PROBLEM THIS SAVED MY WHOLE DAY THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for uploading! Drawing was perfect. Saved me hours!
This worked perfectly. Thank you.
Fantastic - after a couple attempts on my own, I headed for UA-cam and watched your video. Two quick attempts later, it was done. I used fishing line, with a single "hitch" in the knot, so that when I was finished I could just pull on one end of the string and it would slide out. You are welcome to boast to your friends that you taught a NASA engineer with a Masters in Aerospace Engineering how to fix a door.
Kurt Woodham hahaha my 8th grade science students will be impressed, but I'll be even happier to share this news with my husband !
Kurt Woodham You're an intolerable braggart.
Thanks sooooo much...The String was the Trick!!!!!!!!!!!!
THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH!!!! You're my hero of the day! 😀
God bless you for posting this video!
So helpful, thank you so much!
Thank you so much ! You are a genius !! Worked like a charm !!
great explanation! It was a tremendous help!
Way to go on this hack!! Saved me removing trim!
Perfect fix! Thanks!
It was all in the string! We used dental floss as this was a door in our bathroom! We could see how it was supposed to go back together but roller kept sliding back.
Thank you, your a genius
You are brilliant. Thanks sooooo much!!!
Brilliant! Thank you! How did you get the string off after you got the mechanism locked in?
OMG!!! It worked! Thank you!!!
Awesome.......thank you! As my husband says saved our marriage 😅
Genius worked like a charm!
looks good. will try it. thank you
Me and my sister almost got r as whooped but thanks to you we fixed it
Thank you! It worked.
This video helped so much! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
