How to Replace Rollers on a Pocket Door

- This video will show how we Replaced Pocket Door Rollers that slides on an overhead track. The inboard roller broke off the track, causing the door to drop and bind inside the wall pocket. I can see the track, but the door is cased with trim. Need to take off the trim, and how can I remove the door without destroying the wall? Hopefully this will help someone out there with ideas to decide if you can do it yourself to save some money.

I like this; sounds like you're narrating a Mickey Spillane movie.😉
Thanks!
Thanks for the video, which was enough to convince me this repair is beyond my skill level.
This may be the best repair video I have ever seen. You didn't skip any steps, spoke clearly and simply, noted your mistake and every step was thoroughly explained. the camera work showed everything clearly and the inset diagram of the door assembly was extremely helpful. Great video!
Thank you very much for the feedback Anthony. I was really glad to get it done since the new tenant was moving in the following day! Glad its helping other people as well.
Thanx. Finally, the perfect how-to video for a forty year old pocket door that gets stuck half-way. In the process of watching the video, I shined a flashlight into the cavity and thanx for the heads-up about forty years of debris piled up in there.
Glad it helped! Thank you for the feedback!
I appreciate you taking the time to edit the videos and do voiceovers (rather than a blow-by-blow, thought-by-thought "experiment"). Much more watchable and coherent that way. thanks!
Glad it helped and thank you very much for the feedback.
I totally agree. Great job.
Great video, My huby was sayin we have to hire this job out. I found your video told my husband the job wasn't over his skill level and after watching your video he agreed. So we knocked this out this afternoon, only thing different was in our 1964 home, there was another piece of wood over the door he needed to take down so we could get the door back up on the track. We have a couple of old pockets doors taken down years ago, when we opened up a wall. He was able to salvage a roller to use. Now to reapply the molding and paint! Thank you for this great video saved us money and time.
Wow! 1964, ours was 1974. Glad the video was helpful and thank you for you feedback, it's much appreciated.
Narration is EXCELLENT! Common Sense GREAT! The Mistake understandable, and thank you so much for pointing it out. GREAT JOB! THANK YOU!!!
Glad it was helpful! Your feedback is much appreciated!
Thank you! Your door had the exact problem mine has. I'm going to start this project on Saturday!!
Thank you, I appreciate the feedback.
I'm glad it helped, Have fun!
I have worked on my own doors and my customer's doors when I was a local handyman, you showed an excellent job John, 👍 Gary
Thanks Gary 👍
Good explainer video. You should be a narrator for detective books.
Wow, thanks!
Awesome instructional video! Thank You!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for the positive feedback.
I have replaced or repaired at least 100 pocket doors and after the first 2 or 3 an old finished carpenter turned me onto how to save time and money. You never have to cut the hole in the wall when replacing the track. The hardest part is if you come on a track that doesn't slotted screw holds. I showed me his tool that bought from Harbor Freight . It was a 1/4 inch sidewinder ratchet. He took the little handle off the end and welded a 1/4 extension in its place that you use with your screw gun and long 1/4 drive extension to reach into the wall to remove the screws from the track. Its best not remove the screws if possible. New tracks come with slotted screw holes and hope they match the old track holes. I have made a about 6' 4" 2 x 2 with slot in the top to wedge the ratchet onto for leverage in replacing the screws. No need to cut hole in wall and no painting. Have done complete job as fast as 50 minutes.
Thanks for the info Doug. Hopefully it will help if someone needs to change the track.
Best video on pocket doors..Thanks you were great help
Glad it helped and appreciate the feedback.
Thank you for the John. This video is perfect for a DIY repair … and I have watched several. I feel confident I can get my door working right.

Thanks, you too! 👍
Yeah man, you really took your time and explained everything. Thank you.
Glad it helped!
The construction of the check door was very nice. You are very talented at this.
Thank you very much!
Great video. Really good step by step explanation.... camera angles at times could have been better at times... but, you appear to be alone in the video so you did what you could.
Thank you for the information and video! It really helped me fix mine!
Noted on the camera angle as well as the lighting. Your feedback is appreciated.
An excellent video showing how you replaced the rollers the pocket door. I have two similar doors and will certainly return to your video if I ever have to replace the rollers. Thank you very much my friend.
Glad it was helpful Dave! Good weekend sir.
Amazing video, beautifully filmed! I'm happy you liked this video. Best regards.
Thanks for visiting
I'll be needing to do this so this video is really helpful. Thanks very much.
Yea! just make sure you take off the trims and access strip on the opposite side of the J track. Have a great weekend Dennis.
Great video! I made the mistake of taking the wrong side off. Since one of the trucks had fallen off, I was able to remove the door too. The replacement truck looks like the COX 31-07 That I was able to source from Am4z0n (Prime Line N 6530 --- after market brand, but the very same). The door we have looks to be a hinged door repurposed as a pocket door. The first problem is that it has panes of glass and therefore very heavy. The roller trucks are rated for 70 pounds --- just barely enough for this lovely behemoth of a pocket door. Well, the original did last for 30+ years… so probably good enough. Being a hinged door panel, the second problem is that the truck is screwed parallel with the grain instead of perpendicular (so one truck’s screws just eventually pulled out of its mounting hole) --- I will probably mount the truck a few inches inboard so it is into the wood that is perpendicular.
The only thing I’d do differently is to use graphite/dry lube instead of silicon (as silicon may attract dust --- something nylon wheels don’t like). Mind you, the failure point seems to be that pivoting rivet (the wheels will likely outlast that weak point). Anyways, *this is probably one of the best pocket door re-installation videos on Y0utub3. Thanks!*

Good Morning! Thank you for another excellent review video!
I watched your beautiful presentation about how to replace rollers on a pocket door.
Very beautiful work, remarkable tutorial!👍Cheers!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for the nice comment. I wish you a nice weekend.
Thank you, this is what we need to fix our door. Great works.
You bet!
Thank you. This is great to see all the tips especially the one about which side to remove the trim from.
Glad it was helpful!
It seems that it is difficult to know which is the right side until the trim is already removed.
Excellent video. Perfectly explained.
Thanks James. Glad it was helpful!
Thank you! This information was exactly what I needed.
Glad it was helpful!
Nicely done! Very helpful
Thank you for the feedback. Glad to hear it was helpful!
My pocket door jerked off track by Luke (my dog) clashing into door; while running room to room . Your step by step removal of door trim for access and adding a lower bottom plastic guide will reduce the risk of this happening again. The door was missing a track guide. Thanks
Glad it was helpful. 👍
Very well done video. Great detail.
Thank you very much!
Excenlent video Thank you god bless you
Thank you sir! You too.

Super clear tutorial
Thank you! Glad it helped.
Great job 👏
Thank you! Cheers!
Is there a way to look up and figure out which side to remove to swing the door and remove without having that extra step that you unfortunately went through?
Great video John! Thank you!
Remove the trim and access strip on top from the opposite side of the track opening...
see the picture in the link below from the video... just pause it and its written on the pic...
I hope this helps...

Glad it was helpful! Thank you for the feedback.
Thanks for sharing
My pleasure
Hi, great job! Like 726.
Thank you! Cheers!
Hey there I really enjoyed your video. It was easy to follow and very informative. I'm not a pro contractor but I consider myself pretty handy all around so here's my question. In your opinion is there anyway possible that a rear roller might be replaced without removing any trim? I am capable of doing that I'm just worried that if I tear any drywall during the process I'd probably be looking at repainting a pretty large master bedroom with a triple trey ceiling to get the paint to match since the house was built 16 years ago and the master has the original paint. It's a vacation home that gets light use so the paint still looks good even though it's got some age on it.
I wish there was another way but I haven't heard of it.
Hi John!
Great video sharing, my friend. Have a nice weekend....Elio
Many thanks Elio. Likewise.
Have to replace a roller tomorrow.
Good luck!
Thank you!!!
Welcome!
Very nice video but my problem is the the top and I have to take off the molding I hope 🤞 I don’t break it so will try my best thank you for the video
You can do it! go nice and slow.
Thank you for this excellent video. And thanks for pointing out the things you could've done better - hopefully will save others from the same "gotchas".
I hope so too!
Very nice
Thanks👍
Im glad I found yourvideo because your mistake made me look like a pro .
Has anyone ever told you sound just like Joe Friday.
Glad it was helpful. I been told I sound like many people but never Joe Friday LOL.
Thanks for the feedback 👍
Thank you
You're welcome, glad it was helpful.👍
Very nice channel 😍
Thank you so much .
@johnCRV I'd like to know where you found the replacement rollers!!! I bought a 1978 house and was doing some remodel work in the jack n jill bath and we found pocket doors!! Well the pocket that is, no doors... found 2 rollers inside the pocket but that's it... we have had no luck finding rollers to fit the rails. All the wheels are too big. Sure don't want to have to cut the sheetrock to replace the rails. Be much nicer find the right ones.
The links for all the parts and tools I used including the rollers are in the description of the video. Good Luck..
Thank you for the great info/instruction.I will gain superhero status with the wife when I fix our sagging door.
Glad it was helpful!👌
Hi John! Ooops! Yes, I can now see that you need to swing the bottom out in the direction that allows you to lift the door off the track! Sorry for the stupid question. Thank you!
There's no stupid question. 👍Good luck.
great sharing
Thank you very much!
Thanks for sharing and for visiting my channel.. Returning Support with Full View and Like.. Hope you have good weekend.. I've never had to do this before, you video sure will help if I ever do..
Thank you! You too Allen.
Nice! l+
Thanks Kirk. Great to hear from you.
Your video is perfect and we were able to dismantle the mouldings and remove the door. One problem is that the wheel assembly we have is different and we are unable to find it online. Is there a way to send you a photo so maybe you can help us find something compatible?
Bring the old one to Home Depot, Lowes or Ace Hardware.
They will find you a compatible one.
Thanks, John, very good video, as my roller has broken a wheel and I will have to replace it! Hope you don't mind two questions? Will the big box"orange store" have the replacement or will I have to go to a specialty shop? Secondly, so if I understand, to avoid your mistake I need to take off the trim on the side opposite the open side of the track? Thanks for the great info! Kelly
Yes, Big box "orange store" Should have the replacement.
Yes, take off the trim on the side opposite the open side of the track is correct.
Good luck
@@JohnCRV Thank you for your service..wish me and my big hammer luck :)

How much did you charge for a project like this??
No charge.
Sequel: "How to Replace Rollers on a Pocket Door in Two Easy Steps".
Step 1: Watch this video.
Step 2: Hire John.
[ I realize that this suggestion is a year late, but it still may work... 🙂 ]
LOL! Thanks Gilbert
Can we just agree that this door itself is a horrible design, where you'd have to remove trim and probably cut through drywall? Don't get me wrong, I have nothing but respect for the work that he's done, but the door design itself leaves much to be desired.
Thanks for the feedback.
Agreed, his lasted for a life time. Good jod by the installers. My installers used cheap crap framed the entire door in and after 1 year an all day project is looming. Quality now a "daze" is far and few in between.
How much should a handy man charge for that same repair ?
I have no idea.
Looks expensive
$15.00 part

Ok 🤔👍
