2018 Olympic medalist Adam Rippon, and music designer Hugo Chouinard helps explain how figure skaters pick their music.
The 1932 Winter Olympics was the first time figure skating was performed to music. Today, music is an essential part of the sport and there’s a hidden strategy behind how they pick their songs. For a long time, figure skaters skated to classics like Carmen, Swan Lake, and Don Quixote. Not only because it’s great music but because of the clear story line and the dynamic characters in them.
But this is all changing. In 2014, the ISU changed the music rules to allow skaters to skate to music with lyrics. Now with a wider range of music to choose from - some skaters like Jimmy Ma have traded in Bizet for Lil Jon. Will this be a new era of figure skating?

I love that Adam Rippon chose "Arrival of the Birds" for his free skate, a beautiful and moving piece of music such as that was practically written for a performance like that!

4:40 I think is really at the heart of why a skater should choose the music they skate to. The most memorable and adored programs are the ones that skaters genuinely look like they are putting their heart and soul into it, and having the time of their lives. I love watching any skater who just looks so happy to be out there. Love you, Adam! :D
so so true. It really translates into their performance. eventhough they're a few hiccups here and there, but you just get the emotions that they're conveying. I esp feel this with his performance for free skating in team event and with the german pair FS. It was just amazing. I mean yeah technical scores are important. But the whole performance reach out to the audience when the figure skaters enjoy every minute of their routine.

Vox i have a weird feeling with the lyrics option musicals will replace operas its already been seen with performances to almost every song from Hamilton and many more it offers the same benefits as opera will remaining new and modern. Also allows you to play with the era ie a tradition skate to non tradition music (probably why people use Hamilton) i can definitely see pieces set to i dreamed a dream or she used to be mine. But that’s just my guess.

I skated to Carmen as one of the last programs of my figure skating career. No regrets. Such a beautiful song that allows you to interpret a character and move with flow on the ice. Was definitely my favorite program.

Why wouldn't a producer jump at a chance to make a beat to a skaters choreography? Wouldnt that make it more personalized and impactful? Also you're repping your country by supporting your athletes. win win
Matthew Fornear a number of skaters do seek out composers. But there’s many factors to weigh when getting a song. This includes things like cost, skill of composer, skill of the skater, and audience reception. It’s not easy just getting a song from a professional that suits ones skillset and that will allow for auditory /and/ visual draw. Any music can be used now, but this as always included edited suites and covers :)

Yes, johnny weir has skated to poker face, maia and alex shibutani have skated to coldplay several times, yuzuru hanyu has skated to the doors -hello i love you, evgenia medvedeva has even skated as sailor moon to sailor moon music. Theres many many more this is just what i remember

That’s Jimmy Ma. Although his program went viral, he didn’t place well enough in both Nationals and other competitions needed. One would need to do well in those competitions for a spot in the US olympic team

As much as I like classics music, I’m thrilled the horizons have been expanded. I feel like the average performance will be more intense for more viewers and it could help prop up aspects of artistry that are kind of under fire.

You guys should do a video on the difference between ice dancing and figure skating. Because I had no idea until a few dances ago.
Ice dancing is a discipline of figure skating that draws from ballroom dancing. It joined the World Figure Skating Championships in 1952, and became a Winter Olympic Games medal sport in 1976.
As in pair skating, dancers compete as a couple consisting of a man and a woman. Ice dance differs from pair skating by having different requirements for lifts. Couples must perform spins as a team in a dance hold, and throws and jumps are disallowed. Typically, partners are not supposed to separate by more than two arm lengths. Originally, partners were supposed to be in a dance hold the entire program, though modern ice dancing has lifted this restriction somewhat.
Another distinction between ice dance and other skating disciplines is the use of music in the performances. In ice dancing, dancers must always skate to music with a definite beat or rhythm. Singles and pair skaters more often skate to the melody and phrasing of their music, rather than its beat. This is severely penalized in ice dance.

Ada banana. Yeah they get prize money but most of their earnings are from endorsements
Honestly you'd be surprised at how little they make. They win prize money if they win competitions but coaching fees, ice time, costuming, skates and traveling are obscenely expensive - not to mention getting someone to do your music. I was surprised at how many skaters crowd funded, including Nathan Chen. They do get sponsorships/endorsements but that's pretty much only at the top of the top or more commonly around Olympic season.

Lot of respect for figure skaters, very talented people, but their sport is subjective and shares more similarities with dancing than it does with sport. The same can be said for types of gymnastics. Still tonnes of respect for figure skaters.
