Highkey think there should be a prize for who can count how many times I say "sort of" or "um" in this... But I hope this was helpful. I'd love to hear your experiences too, let me know! :) xx
I would like to add ‘being an idiot’, as this is how I broke my foot last year. Two glasses of wine convinced me I could do a Waltz jump, barefoot in my living room. So much fail!! 😂 But seriously, wear trainers 👟 people...
When you mentioned that the lack of strength in someone skating can lead to injuries, I immediately thought of Tutberidze and how she trains her students. I can't believe that parents even let their girls train under her when all she does is break them like a six year old does with barbie dolls! I'm grateful for your video, especially the tidbit about the force that comes down on ones ankles and knees when landing. I will be careful as I start my journey ice skating and I will definitely take the time to go to the gym so that I can prevent getting injuries by being too weak to perform something. Thanks again!
Yes absolutely, there are some seriously wrong training methods for young athletes that are still rampant in the skating community. I'm glad this video helped! It's important for us to take care of our bodies so that we can skate the best and not have to deal with avoidable injuries 💪 Wishing you all the best 😊
Whenever I skate I always get a little sad that I never started when I was younger and have no chance at going to the Olympics or anything. Also where I live the rinks are only open for free skate once a week and private lessons/group lessons also happen only once a week but watching your videos reminds me to just enjoy what I have and enjoy skating
I can understand where you're coming from, that is frustrating. Although there are many opportunities for adult skaters out there now, I'm glad to have helped you realise why we all skate at the end of the day. I feel like letting myself enjoy skating without expecting things from it, really sets me free :) x
Thank you for this!! I knocked a facet joint out of place in my back almost 3 weeks ago just by over doing it with off ice classes and practice. Lesson learned 🙈 still can't do pistol squats or any kind of back extension and I'm down to 2 40 minute group classes a week. More skaters need to watch this 💖
From number 10, speed skaters and hockey skaters are the bain of my existence they seriously have no regard to who or where they'll hit annd the best part is that the stewards don't care either (unless you're doing elements ofc) 🙃
When I watch figure skating and see the skaters landing those jumps, I always wonder how many of them need hip or knee replacements when they're older. Do you have an stats on that? Thanks so much!
Tried to do a two foot turn out of forward crossovers, almost bit it because I was going too fast, compensated with my ankle and now I'm deaing with achilles tendinitis. KT tape has been a lifesaver!
I was expecting this to be something along the lines of a general list including sprained ankles or banged up elbows, but this is really impressive video. Thank you for sharing all this information. A lot of this sounds similar to various safe practices lectures I got when I did ballet. In a lot of these, just skating once or twice you will never encounter these injuries but after time you will have these over use injuries creep up on you. I found this very useful, thank you.
Do you have any advice about avoiding sore shins when doing off ice jumps? I was doing off ice jumps a lot more than I normally would due to lockdown, always made sure to wear sneakers, but found that the shin of my landing leg was getting very sore. Now if I even do just a couple of off ice jumps I get a bit of pain in that shin (not a lot, but just enough that I’m aware of it and know I should stop jumping on the ground or it will get worse). On the ice I have no pain. Thanks for this video!
Hi! I've actually heard this from a few other commenters so I'm going to be making a video on it :) It's also important to consider the hardness/shock absorbance of the ground you're exercising on, it can definitely cause similar issues.
i am starting ice skating lessons in september, i've been a roller skater since i was 10 im 15 now but ive always wanted more than just skating round a rink and i think ice skatings really beautiful. Im really excited and nervous, ive never been on the ice before. anyone got any advice or tips :)
Rachel Valance id say take it easy and don’t rush into it.. but your roller skating will help a bit with ice skating but it is a completely different environment and feeling so.. I wish you good luck 😂 :))
Can you also provide information about the protective gear you use? I started skating just a bit over a year ago. I still fall sometimes, but not nearly as often as I used to. It's my number one cause of injuries. Fortunately, so far nothing really serious has happened. I have used various kinds of protective gear, and would like to see what others use.
You can use nike knee-pads, elbow pads and protective figure skating made butt pads. I just brusied my tailbone because I didn´t wear my butt pad yesterday, always stay protected!
Yeah, having had repeated overuse injuries in both my hands (not from skating, lol, just mundane things)... they are certainly the most annoying type of injury I've experienced. Hey look, the pain is gone! Great! ...then you go back to doing things and, nope, not healed yet. I can imagine that being a much greater level of bad on skates...
It's definitely a frustrating process that's filled with ups and downs. But trusting and investing in the right support and routine consistently is key. Hoping your hands are tracking well x
Wow. I crunched my ankle skating (yep de artistic roller skater is back) and it moved my bones of my right ankle over slightly. so now inside edges hurt like a bitch and i can't do mohawks in my dances!! It was a year ago but i'm still suffering. I have to tape my ankle every time i skate xD And i think I'm first too.
Yasss, you were first! :D Ouchies that's terrible! I'm sorry to hear it hasn't resolved yet, might be worth seeing a health professional. I'll definitely be making a video on ankle injuries (it's so high on my list haha) x
@@ImoneOnIce It is probably a little late by now, since i can do everything else. I'm probably just going to slowly work them back in via chaktaws and such.
Hey..I have been skating a cpl times per week for about six months and I’ve noticed my big toenail has gotten very thick starting around the moon of the toenail and growing out and they’re also turning dark like they’re bruised under the nail. Have you experienced anything like this at all?
Hi! Actually I have experienced some toenail issues like this! It's usually worth getting a Physio or Podiatrist to have a look because you may need orthotics or adjustments to your boot.
"Don't just go and yeet yourself into a double Axel when you don't have your forward crossovers." OK but can I skip the bunny hop and just yeet myself into a single Axel after just having forward crossovers?
Highkey think there should be a prize for who can count how many times I say "sort of" or "um" in this... But I hope this was helpful. I'd love to hear your experiences too, let me know! :) xx
I found something called D30 pads, which motorists use and seem to have worked more effectively than usual pads for figure skaters.
I would like to add ‘being an idiot’, as this is how I broke my foot last year. Two glasses of wine convinced me I could do a Waltz jump, barefoot in my living room. So much fail!! 😂 But seriously, wear trainers 👟 people...
OMG this comment made me laugh 😂 Sorry to hear about the foot though, god knows what mine would do with two glasses of wine ahahaha

Glad to hear it helped!!! Oh my gosh ouch! Wishing you a speedy and thorough recovery :) 💕
Imone thank you sooo much for this !! Cant wait go get back to the rink and gym! (gurls gotta start doing them leg presses for strength 👀)
Absolutely no worries! Happy I could help ☺️ Definitely get in on those leg presses ahaha 🦵
i'm a physio too, just discovered this.. love it! thank you for doing this!
Yay!!! No worries :)
Very well articulated. Thanks for making this vid.
No worries at all! Thanks for watching!
Love your videos! Keep them coming, helps me alot! :)
Thank you for watching!!! Will definitely keep this series going xx

I'm so sorry to hear that! I've met/know some wonderful hockey/speed skaters but I've also met some like this too! :(
When I watch figure skating and see the skaters landing those jumps, I always wonder how many of them need hip or knee replacements when they're older. Do you have an stats on that? Thanks so much!
Darn, I haven't been able to find stats on that sorry, but it would be really good to see some studies done on it!!! 😯

Oh no! Hope you're doing better now?

in the late 80s early 90s Riddell used to carry a boot with steel plates in the ankle. I had those they were painful
Oh ouch! 😱
Amazing video and amazing lady!!!
Thank you Nat!!! ❤️

Hiya! I use fabric knee pads that I made myself, I'll be putting up a tutorial on how I made them soon :)

AWESOME video, so informative!!! I can tell you know your stuff lol
Thank you! So happy it was helpful! :)
Your journey is very inspiring, would love to work with you some day!!
Aw thank you so much!!!
New figure skater and this scared me xD
Thank you! It has been really tough and certainly not as fun as on the ice.
awesome content! i love your videos!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Maybe check with your coach first or have a tonne of padding everywhere before hahaha
The biggest risk is thinking you can go to skate parks on quads...
Cause you know.. skating?
Cool :)
