The message/history of the song: it's based on the ghettos and "hard areas" the guys saw in New York and how people had to fight to "stay alive". The place they did the video was a studio backlot where they filmed the movie Gone With The Wind (showing Atlanta, Georgia, after the Civil War destruction) and a TV series called Combat about WWII.
** FUN FACT: This song is used to train doctors, nurses, paramedics/EMTs, firefighters, the public the proper tempo/rhythm for CPR for a person to "stay alive". 😊

I think the message of the song is that no matter how hard it is, even if you're going nowhere in life... somehow, you're staying alive. So yes, it is asking people to stay positive even when life is dull & hard. :)) About the visuals not matching the words - back then we didn't have proper music videos. Well known performers would be asked to make these simple videos for network (national) television. There was no MTV or any cable TV that specialised in slick music videos. They just made these simple, inexpensive videos to promote their songs on general tv.

This from SongFacts >>> *_"This was one of five songs the Bee Gees wrote specifically for Saturday Night Fever. Like the film, the song is about much more than dancing and having a good time. It deals with struggle and aspiration; making your way in the world even after you've been kicked around. John Travolta's character in the movie is a young man working a dead-end job who feels alienated by his parents. Dancing is his form of expression, and weekends are his time to let loose."_*

This song was written for the 1978 movie Saturday Night Fever, and was the first pop song to use a drum loop. Their drummer had to go home because his mother was dying, so the engineers pieced together a loop. They expected to replace it when the drummer came back, but it sounded so good that they left it in. Later regretted that they hadn’t gotten a patent. As a joke, they credited the drumming to Barnard Lupe - Barnard after a famous drummer and Lupe (loop). Said they got lots of calls from people wanting to know how to get in touch with that drummer. Years later, the heart association put out a video showing how to use the song to help perform cpr. There is an episode of The Office that shows it. Pure coincidence that not only the beat, but the words, make it perfect for cpr.

There is a small fun fact to this song. At the time they were recording it in Miami their drummer had a family emergency and had to go back to UK. So now they were without a drummer. So what to do? They came up with the idea and take the drums from another song from the SNF soundtrack called Night Fever and make a drumloop out of the drum sound from that.
That is what you hear on the song. So The Bee Gees infact made the first drumloop that was used in a recording.

The lyrics of the song are in reference to the story of the lead character in the movie Saturday Night Fever. Tony Manero is a 19-year-old Italian American from the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. He lives with his parents, grandmother, and younger sister, and works at a dead-end job in a small hardware store. To escape his day-to-day life, Tony goes to 2001 Odyssey, a local disco club, where he is king of the dance floor and receives the admiration and respect he longs for. In the movie the part of Tony is played by actor John Travolta.

Also the song wasn't originally written for the Saturday Night Fever movie. The Bee Gees were already working on a new album while in France. They had several songs already written when they received a call from Robert Stigwood. Stigwood wanted songs for a movie he had just purchased the rights for. He sent them the script for the movie. They did not read it. They went and sent a demo of five songs to him. Those songs were: Stayin Alive, More Than A Woman, If I Can't Have You, How Deep Is Your Love and Night Fever. This information comes from their HBO documentary. Which I highly recommend anyone to watch!

Your reaction to the Bee Gees is just delightful! There are SO MANY more for you to listen to....
And, I would highly recommend the movie Saturday Night Fever, if you're able to watch it. In my mind, this song is inextricably linked with the opening shots of the film.

I was 12 when the movie "Saturday Night Fever" and the soundtrack album came out, My parents bought it LOL. Even at that age I knew that this was a world/culture changing event. This album and movie were huge. You had to be there to know what it did to pop culture, especially in North America. Robert Stigwood I believe was the producer of the movie and he had a vision that included the music he wanted and it changed the world. Cheers.

In the mid to late 70s the Bee Gees were absolutely on FIRE. They could do no wrong, although they became the poster boys for the whole disco sucks campaign.

Great song that you can ironically use to pace the chest compressions applied by emergency responders when performing CPR. Always loved this group.

You guys produce by far the best reaction vids on this platform!! Would love to see you react to Muse doing knights of cydonia at Rome’s Olympic stadium, I guarantee you’ll love it 😊

Saturday Night Fever changed movie soundtracks forever in my opinion. Harmonies are insanely high- but it works for them,no problem. Brothers singing together...like ice cubes in a tray. One moves, they all move. 🎼🎶🎹❤️🔥🎧😎

Your story, George, about being in a bank queue and listening/moving to music reminds me of the British film The Full Monty. There's a scene in that where the guys are standing in a queue in the unemployment office and a song Hot Love by Donna Summer comes on over the loud speakers and they gradually start moving to it - it is so funny and an iconic scene in the film!

The beat of this song was matched to Barry's heartbeat. 100 beats per minute. CPR requires 100 chest compressions per minute. This song is used in CPR classes.
