This was their biggest song ever. You literally couldn't turn on the radio for about three years after it was released without hearing it at some point. This was the opening theme of the incredible movie Saturday Night Fever, which turned John Travolta from a guy on a TV sitcom into a MAJOR film star. If you want to get an insight into the disco culture of late 70s New York City, you HAVE to watch that movie.

nope..... hated disco with a passion... and it took me most of 40 years to appreciate this song... and I was a big fan of the Brothers Gibb for many years growing up. I always hoped that my 2 brothers would join me in a singing group but we had such different tastes and we were stubborn. Saturday night fever was a hated movie for decades. I did eventually watch it but still didnt care for it and couldnt stand travolta after Kotter.... I was so happy when they burned all those disco records in Chicago... but it just made those people go out and buy the records again... dance music ruined rock/prog rock... oh well different strokes...

Well it goes the other way too, when I was a kid in the eighties and nineties my mother's friend refused to believe I knew any songs from the fifties and sixties, flat out refused to believe me. I kept saying, why wouldn't I? It's all my mother plays and all that's on her radio station.
I was born in the late seventies and Infact I had heard no other sound until I was thirteen EXCEPT fifties and sixties music, church music and a FEW seventies songs my dad liked when I visited him on weekends.
Truely if you have nowhere to be exposed to something, no one who plays a style or an era of music, how would you know about it?
Are either of you familiar with songs by Shirley Temple? Can you sing them word for word or tell me what movies they're from? Or tell me what Alice Faye sounded like when she sang?
If you can, awesome, but if you have no idea, don't hang it on someone else because they weren't exposed to a style, he's young, maybe in his twenties. They usually listen to modern music

It's strange, I noticed decades ago that there seems to be a revival of music about 2 decades earlier all the time. At least I noticed it in the 70's when I was a teenager when there were 50's dances and music on the radio (people's parents are often 2 decades older), in the 80's, 60's music had a bit of a comeback, in the 90's, the 70's, in the '00's, the '80's, I didn't notice if it continued after that. Also I was exposed to music from old movies I saw on TV in the '60's and '70's, since they played a lot of old movies from the '30's through the '60's on TV, when there wasn't as much programming to fill up the TV time even though there were only a few channels on TV to choose from. So I knew a lot of old songs, at least those that were in movies. Also have noticed that you can assume that the stuff you know from living through a certain time period isn't necessarily common knowledge anymore. But on the other hand I can't say I know as much about popular music from the last two decades as I know about music before that. Not that I'm an expert about any time period!

where young and their song Massachusetts. Then the seventies came around and the movie Saturday Night

I would really love to hear the original version of this song. The Bee Gees originally released this as "Buried Alive". Shortly after release, they saw that the track stalled - no club play, radio didn't care. Three weeks into release, they pulled it off the shelves and went back to the studio to fix it.
Changing one word, from "buried" to "staying" made the song instantly catch fire.
If you pay attention to the lyrics, you will see how "buried" makes so much more sense

And that my friend, is why this was voted the #1 dance song for the entire decade of the 70's. I believe it also ranked at #99 of the all time best songs ever written ;) At the height of this period, they were selling 1million albums a week, which led to a backlash. It got to the point that radio stations started having BG's free weekends where they wouldn't play them at all. !st time that had every happened with a group. This is also to this day the most played song on the planet, it gets played somewhere on the radio every 10-15 seconds worldwide.

One of those movies that you go in expecting a cheesy Grease style movie and end up just floored by the draining emotion, darkness, love, cruelty, comedy and humanity in it. The Brothers Gibb ...... Professionally known as 'The Bee Gees.'
Maurice (on the right-short hair) While on his way to surgery for his intestines, he had a heart attack, yet the doctors operated anyway. (I heard Barry say this on a video.) He was in the hospital for only 2 days! Maurice (pronounced Morris) passed in 2003. I feel he should had been the lead on at least one song on every album.
Robin (on the left-long hair) passed in 2012 from cancer. He and Barry complimented each other with their voices.
Andy, the youngest brother, who had his own successful careert. He passed in 1988, at the age of 30, from inflammation of the muscles around his heart. He and Barry could had passed as twins, even though he was 12 yrs younger than Barry.
The 3 brothers were also married and had children.
Barry (in the middle) said, "I am the last man standing." Barry is the eldest of the brothers.
On September 1, 2021, he and his wife, Linda will celebrate their 51st wedding anniversary, which is also Barry's 75th birthday. They have 5 adult children, and 7 grandchildren. The Bee Gees have sold over 220 million records worldwide (probably more.) They were also writers for other musical artists. Barry just completed a new project called 'Greenfields: The Gibb Brothers Songbook.' It is very nice!
On a side note, their sister, Lesley is the first born. She was 76, January, 2021. She lives a quiet life with her family.
Listen to: How Deep Is Your Love ----- Night Fever --- Emotion (a song written for Samantha Sang) --- You Win Again

Most airplayed song around the globus radio station - every 20 seconds - this plays everywhere around the world and for sure it is the most iconic song of the 70´s decade. It’s an indelible cultural hallmark. None of that happens if that opening scene, is set to any song other than “Stayin’ Alive.
I can’t imagine one single production tweak that could make “Stayin’ Alive” work better. Everything is exactly where it should be. “Stayin’ Alive” is one of those songs that sounds like it’s always existed. It’s crazy to think that human beings had to make it up out of nothing.
It’s a part of our shared cultural heritage now - one of those pop miracles that just never gets old, never wears off, never loses its charge. It remains alive. And indeed one of the most covered pop songs in history (Sherlock Holmes, Airplane, American Idol, The Voice) there are exist minimum thousands of cover versions only here on UA-cam.
