RAFO: “You can’t just spike someone without intent.” Me: “Ya well what about-“ RAFO: “I can read your mind Daniel. No that wasn’t an accident.” Me: “oh....”
I love these videos! SPOILERS Mistborn Era 2 I think that the most obvious example of "if you don't know you can't do it, you can't" occurs in Bands of Mourning with the unkeyed metalminds, which someone can only use once they either are speceifically told or realize what they are.
I found out your channel after your post on r/Cosmere, and I'm loving it! Keep up the good work. Something that I find interesting about the Cosmere is how many details are there to be found in the books, and how I missed _many_ of them. Thanks for making these videos and bringing some of them to our attention!
Thanks! I agree; the first time through a Sanderson book is amazing, but the re-reads are absolutely incredible because you catch all the tiny things you missed.
So the different shards designed and implemented the various systems to access investiture correct? And the Spren copied the Honor blades. My question is did Honor intend for that and design that system of investiture access?
The Shards didn't necessarily design or implement the various magics deliberately; some simply arose as a consequence of a Shard investing into a world. As far as I know, the spren of Roshar acted independently in creating Nahel bonds and granting surges. I'm sure Honor didn't necessarily complain about it though.
Love it. Great video. How do you learn all this stuff? I’ve read all of the Cosmere titles twice, and am frequently on the coppermind Wiki, but you have still been able to have a much deeper and more complete understanding of… Almost everything Cosmere.
Well, Sanderson's RAFO has that "AFO" part. It's not just about reading but putting the pieces together. I love to take notes about what I read and then comparing them with other notes from other books. Piece by piece is how you find out about what's not so clear.
A lot of what I talk about I snag from the Coppermind, but I mostly use that as a resource to basically remind myself what I already know or to find sources for things I've heard but can't place. I've also spent a LOT of time rabbit-holing through the WoB (Word of Brandon) archive and connecting things that way. Honestly though, most of my epiphanies I get simply by preparing these videos and just thinking about stuff.
It all depends on how you define spren. Are honorblades manifestations of investiture which can be bonded with and so integrated on some level into a person's spiritweb? Yes. Do they have independent thought and personality? Probably not. That's Cusicesh! Yeah we don't know much about him other than he's a big unique spren.
Hold on...I actually do have a Mistborn Intent issue. Vin used her powers before knowing about Allomancy. I'm happy to ignore it, because...y'know...second book in a overarching universe and first in a new world. But I would be curious if there is an actual explanation.
Disagree on Roshar. We have several examples of people surgebinding without deciding to, or even before they know that magic exists. A big example is Kaladin when he stuck that medicine kit to the side of a barrel. While I'm open to being wrong, I don't see how the case could be made that he ever made any sort of decision to do so. The Reverse Lashing to save himself from the listener arrows is one thing. I still think it's a stretch to say that just because he wanted "to live" that somehow is Intent enough for him to do something he doesn't understand, has no reason to know would save him, he's never done before, and couldn't begin to consider is possible, but I know I could argue until I'm blue in the face and people would just keep coming back with "yeah well he wanted to live" and no one would listen to me. But how can anyone possibly justify that Kaladin had some deep instinctive urge to make the medicine kit stay on the side of a barrel that counted as enough Intent to get him to use surgebinding when he literally doesn't know that exists?
That's true, there are counter examples on almost every world. The one I was thinking about all while making this video was Vin instinctively using metals at the beginning of Mistborn. With Roshar, you could argue that the spren has some influence on the intent as well, and we see Syl sticking things together before Kaladin ever does it.
@@TheCosmerenaut Hrm, I see that as different things. Allomancy comes built-in with feedback. When a mistborn swallows metals, she can immediately feel them as a reserve. At that point, burning it is as instinctive as a baby's impulse to clutch. We're never given any sense that Stormlight acts the same way, and the applications are far more complicated and require real thought behind them. Even with Soothing, one of the most complicated metals there is, we get the sense that before she was trained, Vin just hit the obligator with a blanket soothing, nothing with any finesse. I guess the "spren intends it" is a thing... I don't know why but that sits poorly with me. I think it's just that surgebinding is already incredibly overpowered and way too easy, so the idea that a brand-new surgebinder will have skill from the moment she gets her powers because the spren gives you not just the ability but the training is... I'm just really tired of surgebinders having everything so easy. The books are just dull now as we sit around and wait for Dalinar to wave a magic wand and wish all of his problems away.
The problem there is that an Aon can go wrong. It does not just fail. It does something else unwanted. It looks like the Intent for AonDor is just that something happen, not that Intent and Key match. Which is also true for other systems on Sel. Shay planned to make herself belief that restamping would save her from a desease, not overwrite her whole personality.
That's very true. It's possible that, simply because of the raw energy of the Dor wanting to get out of the Cognitive Realm it can overpower incomplete or inaccurate intent from the user. With Soulstamps though, I would say that the intent occurs in the carving, not the stamping, or else Ashravan wouldn't be able to stamp himself to any effect.
Epic beard man. Keep it coming I assume that the incident you are referring to involves a certain Medieval Daredevil wannabe getting a little boost yes? I agree the intent was definitely there. As far as Shardic intents go, I like your interpretation. My only query is that other shards and beings on their level seem to view Odium in a way totally at odds with the way he presents himself. I mean we do know a Shards perception is different to ours (poor poor Marsh) but the sheer degree of difference in His case makes you wonder.
I don't think Odium's perception is necessarily different, but I do think he's wanting it to be broader than what it actually is. I've heard it said that the opposite of love is not hate, it's apathy, so because Odium is inherently such a strong emotion, he's applying that intensity to other Intents that aren't entirely his.
@@TheCosmerenaut That reminds me of the saying that "You can only truly hate what you used to love" or something like that. It may be he sees himself as truly embodying pure passion but filtered into a naturally hateful person like Rayse it transforms passion into Odium
We know that some powers come naturally, Kaladin in the high storm fight consciously lets instinct take over, and, on scadrial, vin used emotional allomancy naturally
The best argument I can give is that investiture inherently wants to be used, and I think in many cases knows how to be used, and can communicate that to the native investiture of the user.
I am going to have to disagree with your comment about intent with regards to Hemalurgy. When Spook was stabbed and received the spike I am positive the guard who stabbed him wasn't thinking: "I think I am going to make this guy stronger."
Highkey enjoying this cosmere content, bless your stars
Thank you!
This is one of my favorite channels right now!
Glad to hear it!
Oh I never got the connection between cultivation and cultivating yourself to be better as part of being a radiant. That makes sense!
I figured it fit!
Honour the bond and cultivate the relationship with the spren
Good way to put it.
you're just a really cool guy, thanks
Thank you! And you're welcome!

Not so much mind reading as it is incredibly skilled soothing.
You mean when Spook was spiked right?
Yup!
@@TheCosmerenaut You mean Ruin intended it? If so, this would explain how Preservation helped out Vin do that 'draw on mists' thing
2:05
And Feruchemy involves ruining yourself to preserve your abilities for later
That's true!
The choice of words... Wow
so happy the channel is back!
I didn't mean to be gone! Just busy...

DEFINITELY!!! That's a perfect example!
1. Lovin' the beard!
2. Keep the videos coming! Longer, more in-depth! Content!!!!! :D
Thank you! I've got a few good ones coming down the pipe.
I smashed that thumbnail so hard. We need more Cosmere videos. Cosmere videos, we need more. Ketek? Nope. 😀
Keep trying John. You'll get there.

I almost feel like that bit at the end was just for me

You forgot that holding onto metal is quite harmonious.
"Kumbaya my Shard..."
I wonder if the honor blades have spren? And you know that big spren that is like a jet of water what’s that about?

What is the book from where the metallic arts illustrations are from?
The Hemalurgy table? That was released in the leatherbound Hero of Ages.

How did Kaladin do reverse lashings if he didn't know he could do them? It seems like he was doing them by accident for most of book 1

There was spook, who got spiked, accidentally.
Ah, but that wasn't an accident! Ruin himself provided the driving Intent behind that one.
hey have you ever considered making a cosmere memes video? or is it not something you would like to delve into? :)
Oh I'm definitely planning on a Cosmeme video.

NICE! Thank you for your contribution!

That's the exact instance I was referring to at 3:46. The intent behind that didn't come from the soldier, it came directly from Ruin.
“Being on the wrong day of hemalurgy will ruin your day” (Spoilers below)
