Knights in Shining Honor: Remembering the Radiants

- With ten different orders sharing ten different surges, the Knights Radiant can be pretty tough to keep straight. This video should help you remember the order of the orders, as well as give you more info about your favorites.

The iconic art of Dalinar was done by Wanda Sonnemann. You can see her art as well as her impressive costuming skills here:

This video was mostly spurred when I saw Jofwu's incredible chart of all the Radiant orders/heralds. The creation and finished product can be seen here:

I'd imagine lift's 4th oath to be 'I accept that there are pancakes I cannot eat'
I don't think that's possible. Except for those darn meta-physical ones!
It's my headcanon that at least one order has the oath "I am a stick"
"to absolutely *Nale* lawbrakers."
There's a pun in there. Was that intended?
Oh yeah, I own up to my puns. Fully intended.
I pronounce it Nale like Na-lei
I love that you used a pancake analogy for the edgedancers' powers (Lift).
Journey before Pancakes.
@@TheCosmerenaut I believe you mean pancakes before destination
Pancakes *are* the destination.
Can we take a minute to appreciate that he made an acrostic that starts with Windrunners, proceeds through the overlapping powers -- in order! -- and makes memorable sense? No easy feat! Well done, sir!
Yeah, it took a while. My second best was "Wit Seldom Does Expected Things Like Exiting While Sadeas Bathes."
I don't care how long it takes for the next video to be released, as long as they stay this good. This is some high quality stuff dude!
Glad you don't mind, because it's been a minute...
8:40... man we had no idea back then did we XD
Not one bit.
He's probably the craziest of all the heralds
This is making me crave the next SA book IT'S TOO SOON FOR THAT
Don't worry! It'll be written next year!
Life before death
Strength before weakness
Journey before destination

I will remember those who have been forgotten. Wait, that sounds familiar...
Lift would unironically be a great therapist. She comforted "Darkness" himself!
*Hug Power!*
Always good to get a breakdown of the orders. The real question though is which one would you wish to join?
I don't know why but the notion of the stonewards always appealed to me. Probably because their Herald is quite possibly the single most noble being in the whole damn cosmere so if the order bears any resemblance to him at all..... just damn son.
The Stonewards were said to most match the nature and temperament of their Herald, so it sounds like a good match.
I'm honestly most drawn toward the Truthwatchers, both because I like the surges they can bind, and the "outcast" feeling we've gotten with Renarin is really relatable to me.
If they weren't led by Nale, whose interpretation of justice is a little... skewed... Skybreakers, without a doubt. You'd basically be a cop that can fly, yeet people into space, and disintegrate things.
Either Willshapers, for their surges (don’t have any idea on their ideals, but they are probably not that restrictive), or Edgedancers, because I kind of like their ideals. Some of the other orders I thought about have ideals I’m not comfortable with (Elesecallers and Windrunners).
Elsecaller/ Truthwatcher here according to the official quiz. I got them in the reverse order, but identify with them in the way I wrote them previously.
Lightweaver or edgedancer.
I wish i could put it words how much i enjoyed this video. It was amazing, i see you more confident in the way you talk, and it really makes it a pleasure to watch. I died when i heard the last windrunner oath. Thank you for your work!
Thank you! I feel like I'm getting better at these, so I'm glad that's coming across!
Please do a video on the Heralds, who they are/their current location!
That's an excellent idea! I'll definitely consider it!
Your videos are highly appreciated !
As is your appreciation!
I like that analogy. It is very helpful to rembering what surges the orders share
Thanks! That's why I made it!
Great video! Nice to see another of these. What I was left wanting was some of the oaths of the other orders apart from the Windrunners, but maybe it's not worth an entire video since there are a lot we don't yet know, maybe when the next book comes out there'll be more content for that.
Yeah, we haven't seen many oaths of the other orders. The only ones I didn't include that we've seen are the Bondsmiths, but I thought those might be a bit too spoilery than I wanted. Oh, and the Skybreakers. Oops.
Thanks for this video. Was very helpful. Not a lot of Cosmere stuff on UA-cam.
You're welcome! I'm doing my best to get more Cosmere stuff on here!
I use the acronym all the time now to remember
Great video, and great acrostic!
Thanks!
Great video man
Thank you!
How would most knights solve the trolley problem?
Ooh, that's a good question! I think most would probably pull the lever, because that would technically be the greater good. Except maybe the Skybreakers.
They'd pull the lever, go to the single person about to be hit, summon their blade and then free them because they're storming magic warrior wizards in outer space.
Forget the lever. Just chop the trolly in half.
When shallan draws the image of yalb and the other sailors on a beach, and someone destroying a statue, I'd she displaying the tie between truthwatch and lightweaver?
There could be some crossover, but the Words of Radiance also talks about how the lightweavers would bring comfort to their fellow orders, perhaps by doing similar things. It's an interesting thought.
Goddamn, sometimes I think I am cool, then I find myself watching videos like this...
And you realize just how right you are. I know. I bask in your awesomeness, Max. Keep it up.
@@TheCosmerenaut :D :D aww!!!! Thank you!!! Hey, I'm all done with The Stormlight Archives. Do you recommend anything? Thanks for the video by the way
Of course if there's anything you haven't read by Sanderson, that would be my first recommendation. Is there a book of his you haven't gotten to, Cosmere or not?
What are the rumors about Battar? I haven't heard of them.
She's been helping Taravangian with execution of the Diagram.
This one may need an update, as we met a stoneward.
Indeed!
Hold up, I’m kinda new to the Cosmere, but I remember meeting someone in the interludes of Words Of Radiance, his name has two consonants and he is a cobbler and he was talking about “we are all the same” and all that stuff. Then Nale killed him. But I don’t know, I’m still new. Because there was also another mention of a cobbler taking care of street kids in Edgedancer. Maybe they are the same, maybe they are different, I don’t know.
That was Ym, who was going to be a Truthwatcher.
@@TheCosmerenaut Wait, he was gonna be a Truthwatcher? How do you know these things? I honestly thought he might be a Bondsmith because of the way he was saying, “we are one” but I must be wrong.
Yup. The description of his spren - like a shimmer of light through a crystal - is a Truthwatcher spren. It's also been confirmed by Brandon: wob.coppermind.net/events/35/#e2507
@@henrywayne5724 him saying we are one is related to the iri religion. The iriali aren't normal rosharans , thier ancestors migrated from someplace other than Ashyn and btw the religious tale he tells is very reminescent of the shattering of adonalsium . So the iriali could be very interesting in future books. We might get to see them in the book with lift's flashbacks and they are supposed to be important in the space age of the cosmere.
Check out thier entry on the coppermind
Looking forward to an update of this video 😁
We know so much more now!
@@TheCosmerenaut yes we do 😁
And thanks for the great work!
Thank you!
You should do a updated video for this, taking into account RoW
I definitely should.
@@TheCosmerenaut also thanks for your videos I love them!
You're welcome!
Wait, did you get the cocoapuffs idea from my Crempost the other day, or was it literally unrelated and we both decided to photoshop the same cereal?
Haha, we did it totally independently! I actually just had to go check your profile because I wasn't sure what you were talking about. When I was prepping my script for this video, I thought of the phrase "coocoo for crempuffs" and knew I had to put it in.
By far the best coincidence this month!
I have seen every video of yours. 😁
I approve of this. Carry on.
I dunno how you got all this information about the heralds but I think it's time for a rereading of all 3 books...
It's ALWAYS time for a reread!
Minor Spoilers for some Shallan backstory (I think from Words of Radiance).
Aluminium can be soulcast. I don't know if it was a mistake by Brandon, but it's clearly stated at one point that Shallan's Aluminium necklace is worth a lot, but nowhere near as much if it wasn't soul-cast. When her brother was being taken for his gambling debts and she gives the debtor her necklace in exchange for her brother.
Yes, aluminum can be made via soulcasting, but it's much harder to soulcast things out of.
I think you can soulcast to aluminum but not soulcast from aluminum... I’m not sure tho
I guess wooden objects like to "stick" to them selves
That likely wood be the case.
Hey, awesome video, man. You summed up all the orders pretty well. On another note, do you have any recommendations for books similar to B. Sanderson's Stormlight Archive? I have read all of the Cosmere.
Thanks! If you haven't read his other books, like the Reckoners trilogy, the Alcatraz series, or Legion, they're definitely worth it. I've started going through the Wheel of Time in order to get to Sanderson's ending, so that's a good choice too.
@@TheCosmerenaut Yeah, I might check out his other works. I've already started reading WoT since I've heard that Sanderson took inspiration from it and that it's generally similar to Stormlight. I'm loving it so far, but some asshole spoiled me some things about the story, so I will see how that turns out.
I've also heard good things about Malazan. Have you ever tried it?
I haven't read Malazan yet, but I know people love it. The Dresden Files are another popular one I've heard a lot of good about but haven't gotten to.
@@TheCosmerenaut I see. I've recently finished Dresden Files book 1 recently. I thought it was okay, but I've heard it gets better after book 3 or so. Stormlight 4 is still quite far away, but at least there are other books to keep us occupied in the meantime :)
The light bringer series is one Brandon himself recommends. They are fun.
Hi can you talk a bit more about bondsmiths? For example Dalinar could start understanding people taking in a different language after speaking with them. Also the 2 abilities don't really explain how he was able to unite the realms. Even Stormfather was goofed up by this one.
I think that goes beyond his Order. He said he is “Unity”, like Odium, Honor and Cultivation. Maybe he’s becoming one of them. Just a feeling. And also when Dalinar said he is Unity, Odium replied “That’s impossible, we killed you”. I think there was a Unity before and he was killed by Odium and other accomplices.
Dalinar as a Bondsmith is about to manipulate the surge of Connection, which is one of the fundamental forces of the entire Cosmere. Worldhoppers like Hoid use a similar method to speak local languages, though others actually take the time to learn.
Im hearing references to the strong and weak nuclear force except all mystified.
That's exactly what I was thinking when I was researching this. Brandon sticks to real-world physics as much as possible.
RoW SPOILERS ahead!
So, the corrupted Sibling spren was able to negatively affect the radiants, probably through their spirit web. Could overwriting your spirit web using soul forgery prevent this effect, or since the stuff is still there, just overwritten temporarily, would it not work?
I don't think it's so much influence of the spiritweb as a whole, but manipulation of Connection - which we've already seen Bondsmiths do. It's likely any Forgery would have a similar negative effect on the Nahel Bond.
So aluminum is just magically innate in the cosmere?
If not actually magically repulsive. In mistborn, ingesting aluminium will straight up deplete all your metallic reserves.
Huh. Interesting
Aluminum can not be affected by any type of investiture which makes it one of the only thing in the cosmere that can survive nightblood. Things can be soul cast into aluminium but aluminum can not be transformed into any other essence
I thought if it was Magically innate then you couldn’t soulcast for it
I believe you can soulcast into aluminum, but you can't soulcast from aluminum.
I just noticed that the opening is archive related just noticed that
WSDETLEWSB! It's the Orders!
The next book is being written this year.
I know! Almost halfway done with outlining!
Where did you get the Windrunners fourth ideal from?
Made it up! I based it on Kaladin's behavior in Shadesmar when he was trying to say it but couldn't. We actually just don't know it yet.
nah man - he had a vision, it's right on the mark..
Shhhh! I can't just admit that I hacked B-San's computer!
Jezrien was the king of heralds, not the herald of kings
Though I could be wrong on my memory there.
He was also known as the Herald of Kings, and is even called that by Nale at one point in Words of Radiance.
the girl in Gravity Rush is a Knights Radiant
I mean, you're not wrong.
Is there any reason that silver is what works on Threnody and not aluminum?
Yes. What is that reason? No idea.
...There are so many puns in here.
I love me a good pun.
Shalash ( and pretty much all the other Herald) have gone mad and can't be regarded as examples of their orders. Shalash is gonna be a dustbringer.

You should remake this video now that RoW has been released.
We do have quite a bit more information now.
Have you seen him? LMAO!
I'm proud of that one.
Am I the only one who thinks Hoid would be an excellent Willshaper?
Let's be fair, Hoid would make a good whatever he wants people to think.
Good point
Um I don't get this reference. Why would kalek have either very good or very bad breath ?
A common exclamation in the books is "Kalak's breath."
^ This ^
How much of this information is WOB
Most of it is based off information found in the books. Some of the bits about what certain heralds are up to currently has been either taken from, or at least confirmed by WoBs. I pulled most of it from the Coppermind, so all the references can be seen on each herald's page there.
After spending almost 100 Hours with these books (by audible's count) who has problems with this?
I knew the orders and the surges, but couldn't always pair them up correctly without checking. I figured if it helped me, other people might find it useful too.
I'm almost finished graphic audio oathbringer, and I have to say - it does feel long.. the others didn't really but maybe that was because they were more interesting as all this (Radiants and Roshar) was new to us in the first 2 books
I am a stick
Wanna be fire?
I found it interesting, just see you cutting the video all the time but not doing it while remembering the lists...That was kind of out of place, In any case here is my like and keep up with the good work
Yeah, I was including the mnemonic remembering both to just add repetition of it, but also cause I thought it was funny.
Which order would I like to be in? None of them, considering the fact you have to be traumatized in order to get in and, I'm sorry, but the prospect of going through a horrifying experience only to be conscripted into an army to stave off the end times is not a job prospect I find appealing.
I don't think the trauma is important. I mean, we know that in order to bond a spren, you need to have cracks in your spiritweb, so of course some sort of "traumatic" experience is necessary, but I would argue that life itself is traumatic enough. We get beaten and broken down enough just going through our own everyday existence, that all of us, even those who, from the outside, seem to have had it easy, likely have those cracks. But being broken isn't the most important; it's what you do afterward. Do you pick yourself up, fill those cracks with something stronger, and keep doing the best you can even in the face of the end of the world? Or do you roll over and get swept up in the highstorm of life? That's the most intriguing concept in the Stormlight Archive to me; the difference between a perceived noble who falls, like Amaram, and a character you initially hate but who rises, like Gaz. It truly has to be "Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination." For all of us.
Sorry for the wall of text.
@@TheCosmerenaut Well, I'm just going off of what I've heard WoB mention that all Knights Radiant had to be broken emotionally in order to bond. Which was why Adolin hasn't bonded with any spren, because he's fairly content with his life and doesn't really have anything he feels particularly bad about, unlike the other Knights we've seen so far.
Oh, you're not wrong! I was just feeling particularly philosophical.
Makes you wonder what happened with Lift though.
@@TheCosmerenaut Most likely someone died.
@@TheCosmerenaut Apparently that's been misunderstood by the radiants of the past. As there is one well adjusted character (Lopen I believe) who is well on the radiant path. Bascially the idea is that you have to be "open" what exactly THAT means is another RAFO
