I havent finished the video yet but i just wanted to say that first piece means so much to me since i have a similar cartoony style and all of my art teacher have told me throughout the years i wont get a good score because of it. But you & your art give me hope.

This is the first art portfolio video that I've watched and actually liked the art work!! Your work is so original and versatile and you clearly have lots of talent and skill. I'm a junior rn and been stressing over about creating a portfolio. Although i now feel very behind, this is super helpful and provides valuable insight for me. I'll be keeping in mind of what i should focus more on for my artwork and for myself.
FINALLY a fellow IB art kid. I'm an HL senior this year and I'll tell you what, it really does test your love for art! But luckily it's something I love so the stress is worth it... I guess ;)

For my portfolio I just photographed everything cuz I had most decent sized paintings, drawings, and sculptures. It wouldn’t have worked out on a scanner lol but also everyone I knew just photographed and I got in everywhere so I feel like it depends where u apply (I’m Canadian & RISD seems strict)

I’d recommend the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards! It’s a really great national competition- I won in my sophomore year for comic art and I got to go to New York City!!

If you apply for financial aid it can bring it down substantially, for me personally if I apply it could bring it down to 38,000, only because I have low income and it’s only one parent. But it varies.
It varies everyone story is different I say apply cuz no one controls how much money we get in financial aid so... that is why I am trying it out and giving it my all it includes so many factors so.... yeah but good luck if u do...

Hi! Thanks so much for the video! I live in South Africa and am in my final year of high school. I'm getting my portfolio together and I have 3 large journals of planning, artist research and medium experimentation - I noticed you included a few pages of yours. What is the maximum amount of pages we could submit of this? (I know you said RISD allows up to 5 but technically its a "visual journal" not a sketchbook; do you perhaps know what other schools allow?) Could we do the whole thing as a PDF document and make it a "singular" thing like you mentioned with the comics?
+Meghan Hoffmann as far as I know, all those sound like they would count as a sketchbook :) the PDF is meant specifically for comics, so I don't think risd would be willing to see your entire sketchbook- I was told that just a few pages are good to show your thought process, but including too many could take away from your actual finished pieces! I applied to a few other schools, and all are similar to risd in sketchbook requirements (just a few pages) except Calarts, which asks for a full sketchbook that you send in. Hope this helps!!

When you apply to college you have to submit grades for every year of high school as well as your cumulative gpa, not sure if RISD looks at each year though
My biggest worry for school is being homeschooled. I don't want to go to a public/private high school for the most part but I'm concerned my college choices are going to be limited without any pure art programs. I know that this is what I want to do and I want to pursue art and design but I don't want to stress over something that might be irrelevant. Would you guys say that programs and things like AP art are necessities to get into schools? Sometimes I feel like I don't have the resources that will make people say "oh, well she got into this program" or "oh she managed to do this class" or anything like that, though I'm trying to tell myself it isn't a problem.
I can’t speak for anything but the public high school experience, because that’s all I had available to me. At the end of the day your portfolio is the most important thing. I felt disadvantaged against kids who went to private art high schools but you can’t always control your opportunities. Having AP/IB art classes and awards do look really good on a college app tho, schools are looking for people who achieve highly in structured courses.

It’s been over a year- but I think I used India ink! Sharpie might not give you an even texture.
