How Often Should You Water a Phalaenopsis Orchid?

- One of the first objectives in orchid care is learning how to water your orchid properly. Both over-watering and under-watering are the two main causes of orchid death. When you learn to water your orchid, more than half your battle with orchid care is complete.
The other items that influence blooms, and good health, such as light, temperature, humidity, and fertilizer, do not influence the orchid’s health as much as how often and how much water you provide for your orchid.
Several factors will influence how often you should water your orchid, for example, the size of the pot, the type of orchid, the season of the year, the orchid’s condition, the potting media it’s planted in, and if the orchid undergoes a dormant cycle.
For example, a medium-sized Phalaenopsis orchid planted in a 5-inch pot needs to be watered every 7 to 10 days. Smaller-potted Phalaenopsis such as mini-Phals need a shorter interval in between watering, 4-5 days.
Orchid health is influenced by how much and how often you water. In this article, I’m going to focus only on how often you should water you’re orchid. Let’s look at each one of those conditions to determine how often you should be watering your orchid.
It’s trial and error sometimes, but if you follow these guidelines there is less error. The main thing you need to know is that each person’s climate and growing conditions are different, so don’t take a general rule and apply that to all your orchids. You have to test and see what works for you and stick to that, independent of what everyone says.

The Monsoons have arrived to the Florida Panhandle. We have 80% humidity in the day and 75% at night. My Orchids are loving it. And my Phalaenopsis are reblooming. But with all the humidity it is taking them much longer to dry out.
Hi Tally, I can imagine that would be orchid paradise. Is there a way to get a fan on them? If not, I'd definetly decrease the watering.

Hi, I am a new subscriber for your site and also a beginner needing all the information about taking care of my new collection of grocery stores orchids!
Your programs are very educational and had answer lots of my questions, but I would like to know how much egg shells, green tea leaves, banana peel and epson salt I need for each of my orchids and if I could combine or add all of them as replacement for comercial fertilizer.
I had watched a few of your programs and very much like how easy and clear are all your information about the care of orchids !
My last question for now is that one of my orchids had a baby and is growing so fast and strong that very soon it will be as big as the mother, can I leave it alone or I need to transplant it away from the mother ?????
Hi. I have had my orchids for three years and I have not had one of them bloom. I have tried many different types of media. My latest are clay pebbles. I have watched so many videos and read so many articles. I’m confused and still have no solutions. I have received another orchid in bloom from a big box store. I will be cleaning out the packed moss around the base and putting it into clay pebbles.
My orchids are indoors with a/c during the summer and heat in the winter. The change of season affects the amount of light.
My husband says that I fuss with them too much. I need some direction. I am currently (today actually) putting three into clay pebbles and one into bark and spagmum moss mix as it has lost all but one leaf and has few roots.
You are the first I am reaching out to. I would really appreciate your advice.

Hi Michelle, Usually repotting them too soon seus them back a bit. They don't like to be changing média all the time. Also when and orchid doesn't bloom, it has more with light and fertilizer than the media. Are they getting adequade morning light? I wish you the best in getting them to bloom.
When I got my 1st Phal, just add ice says 3 cubes per week, which is what I did until I learned not to, but I didn't always remember, and this plant did not die, lol. But, at roughly 1/4 C power week, that is way less than everyone says to water them. I have to wonder if all the ppl saying water more is the reason for so much root rot? Now I panic if I don't check all the time & I'm afraid when they get too dry. Can't win 😂
With the dry winter should I place a small humidifier by them?
I keep my humidifier on all year round just because they are indoors
What about phrags, do you let them stand in water especially during winter? Here where I live it is our rainy season in winter and temp is about 7- 12°C night and 14 - 22°C during day. I am new to phrags and so afraid of losing them. They are in the greenhouse which has 2 sides fibre glass and 2 side shade nett so there is quite a flow of air. They stand in a tray and rain drops do fell on them.
Hi Terry, Phrags like to have more water around them and since their conditions are not like Phals; they are a little different. Mine are in a pot that has a revesoir of water at the bottom, where they can reach down and get water at any time. I didn't include sphagnum, which would make it wet and soggy all the time. So you can ignore the winter watering tips for them. :)
Omgggggg…. I have that same mini Phal in the beginning of the video. Do you have a name for it? The really dark almost brown burgundy one.I’m rehabbing one that lost almost all it roots after a repot in moss and bark. Took it out and is now in rehab but I found another one so I bought it.
Hi Melissa, I don't have the names for my minis. I usually pick those up at the grocery store because I can't help myself, and they come with no ID. I wish I knew.
@@Orchideria no problem. I love minis. For me they are a little less intimidating than the bigger Phals.

Hi PL, This one was kind of an accidental orchid that jumped I to my shopping cart while I was at the grocery store. It didn't have an ID on it and unfortuneately, it doesn't smell like chocolate. But since it was so insistent that I take it home, I did. Kind of like those puppies at the adoption center. :)
Regarding your "assistant" - is she being paid to make an appearance? how much? does she belong to the Feline Trade Union? I hope she has a appearance/entertainment contract.
Thanks for the watering info ... I usually soak every 2 - 3 days, and fertilise every 2 weeks. So far, it works for me.

I hand water most of mine.
I have a few (okay, 20) no ID big-medium phals I got from box stores. Some are in sphagnum, and I usually try to keep them in the same medium because I had a lot of root death when I tried to switch a few to bark. However, the moss in the center of the pot feels moist while the rest is bone dry. Do I need to wait till the inner moss is dry before watering, or do I only water the edges, or should I do something else? I don’t want to repot till they’re out of bloom.
Hi Lindsey, Since they are big to medium phals, you can focus on getting the media dry from the outside first. Then the water in the middle will move to the outer portion of the pot. It will always remain a tad bit wetter in the middle though. You need to make huge slits in the side of the pot so that more air gets to the moss. Sphagnum has a powerful wicking property that will distribute the water more evenly throughout the pot, pulling it out of the center and to the sides.
@@Orchideria Thank you! I love your channel and website, and I trust your advice. It was from one of your videos that I finally realized what was killing my orchid roots (transplanting into a different medium)! I’m in NW OK, so my growing conditions are similar to yours in Kansas. When I got the phals that are currently blooming, I didn’t fully repot them, but I did pull some of the icky sphagnum off, replaced it with new sphagnum, and put them into clear orchid pots with lots of slits and holes. I even add extras with a drill! So at the center of these pots are probably older, more decayed moss, which is why they’re not drying out fully. Is it true that drier conditions encourages root development? I’ve heard that about both drier and humid conditions, so I’m not sure which to believe!
Hi Lindsey, I haven't heard about how the drier conditions stimulate root growth at all, so I'm going to have to get back to you on that one. My first reaction is that the might react to the dryness trying to produce new roots, but it wouldn't be a natural way to grow them. It's kind if torture, and the orchids ability to adapt to that. I could be totally wrong about this too, so I will definetly look into that some more.

This is getting a way to much. Too many people are in demand of fertilizer in Orchids. Stop, and just watch other people's Blog. Then write them about what can happen with bread and Banana Skins. My Orchids live a good life, now the worst happened. Have people stick to one means of planting correctly. How can anyone know what needs to be done with so many people that give different ideas, and the next Blog. Says "O No, That's All So Wrong!" Does anyone know what to actually do to grow Orchids?
