There was a POW camp in Japan during World War I that was surprisingly nice, so much so that troops didn't bother escaping.

So, the Japanese turned the germans in to weebs in a place litteraly called Naruto.
Hail Giratina The true god best story ever told
I laughed so hard I stared choking
Poles too. Their first president a couple of years later was named Gabriel Narutowicz.
The contrast between ww1 POW camps and ww2 POW camps in Japan is frightening...
Na it's just that Japan had a secret crush on Germany ever since they whooped France the first time.
There were four factors (my conjecture):
1. Militarists, who were the driving force behind Japanese expansion in WWII, were not in full control of Japan.
2. German advisors once trained the Japanese army, and so Japanese officers had respect for them.
3. The Germans dealt the Japanese more casualties, and didn't easily surrender, possibly impressing the Japanese.
4. Because there were so few prisoners, Japan could just provide their own guards. During WWII, because so many Japanese soldiers were needed to fight, Korean and Taiwanese guards were brought in to replace them. They were poorly trained, had low morale, and were said to be the most brutal of guards, passing down the brutal treatment they got from the Japanese to them.
It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship
Since the camp *is* in Naruto, Japan, there better be an anime for it someday.
I wonder how it would play out.
What sound is that
all the prisoners are female high-schoolers and its a slice of life show about cooking, Im calling it.
That place where Japanese train German to become Naruto runner
jonas1015119 bruh for sure
We need a feel good movie based on this. Get Wes Anderson on it
@Rikka The Second I think the WWI summer camp movie should be called camp bando
@Rikka The Second Or if you're into musical biopics, I think one based on the whole oasis vs blur fiasco would be quite funny
they actually got the actor that played Hitler in Downfall in the Japanese movie on it
As a backup we should get Taika Waititi!
Again, there ALREADY is a movie about it
It is Japanese only though (but I think the German actors are just subbed into Japanese)
Maybe someone should crowdfund it to be released internationally
Not many people know this, but the real origin of 'Naruto running' was actually from this POW camp. since normal running wasn't fast enough to escape. Many different forms were tried, The hand outstretched over your head for example. However this was deemed to be worse since it increased dragged. Eventual, young Ablert Gustaflof, after watching reading about fast automobiles, thought he had stumbled onto the perfect running form. With his upper torso bent forward, arms held straight behind him, he realized he could achieve tremendous speeds while running. He never did try to escape though. life in the camp was just too good. And thus this running technique was lost to the ages until it was researched after WW2 by some movie directors.
and thus the little know story about the creation of Naruto Running
Omg it makes perfect sense!
Tell me it isn't sarcasm.
Jeffrey Gao Why should i lie in a History Video?
@@SirScheisalot Sorry. Couldn't tell.
If only it were true lol
This was very like the Curragh Camp for German and Allied POWs in Neutral Ireland during WW2. The POWs were treated very well by the guards were basically left to do whatever they wanted. They were able to go to nearby towns and got a weekly allowance to purchase items. They went on hunting trips, took part in a rowing club and watched films in the cinema. The Germans and Brits played football matches against each other. One captured RAF just walked out of the camp and got a bus to British owned Northern Ireland. Like in Japan, after WW2 ended some of the Germans stayed in Ireland and had families there.
Very interesting

Ah germans and their camps, a match made in heaven
a match [M A D E I N H E A V E N]
Isn't it wierd that the town with such a nice prison camp's name is Naruto? Seems like such a Crazy Noisy Bizarre Town... Compared to the Bloody Stream that was the trenches, the prisoners could Stand Proud and know they are safe. You'd have to be nuts to try escaping, as nuts as if you tried Fighting Gold. They should've gave Chase to escapees and give them a Traitors Requiem.
@@Colddirector IS that a -naruto- reference?
It was so much fun they expanded the party into Poland and China the next time.
From Camp Bando to Bataan Death March.
Crazy how things can change so much in a few short decades.
They loved it so much they became friends
And yeahhh... The rest is literally history!
Girls: OMG, we're going to Japan!
Boys: POWs for the win!
Does this explain why the Japanese always seem so fascinated by anything German?
I think that story goes back even further to the Franco-German war. But yes, this event was fairly significant in that.
@@MChannel80 ahhhh. Thought so. All this time I thought it was just a notzee-chic thing.
@@MChannel80 is that the same as the Franco-Prussian war?
Z Tat yes it is. Franco-Prussian war is a Common yet not correct description (but what actually is). The whole of Germany fought France and later even unified right there and then, not just Prussia.
@@luisdergroe8944 right, which led to the proclamation of the German Empire in Versailles. I was just confused because I've never heard it called that before. Regardless of who was actually fighting the war, every article/book/website/person that I've heard mention it always refer to it as "Franco-Prussian".
When humanity remembered it’s humanity.
Rapunzel's "Find your humanity!" line from Tangled played in my head when I read this, lol.
They ALWAYS do!
Jeffrey Gao. Check out the video ‘Christmas Truce’ from ‘Simple History’. It is another day people remembered their humanity.
@@ThomasTHEONEANDONLY I watched that a while ago.
I thought I wouldn’t get a response from you Jeffrey Gao.
Summer camp?! SIGN ME UP
I would like to sign up on that summer camp just to binge watch Naruto all day.
Parrot Bird Well due to your recent troubles with concentration we decided that we’re sending you to a camp that will focus on improving that.

I mean, that's a viable strategy to win the war.
3st 3st That's a viable strategy to see your kids again with both of your legs still attached to your body
I think Japan was playing the long game and wanted to get on Germany’s good side early.

I just noticed that alternatehistory hub is one of your patron supporter. It's always good to see educational UA-camrs supporting each other
I remember learning about this place in The Great War, who else?
I never knee about this side of WWI because I always thought that the war was fought in Europe and the Middle East.
There were some battles in Africa, too. The Battle of the Bees being one of the notable ones
Japanese POW camps in ww1: ☺️😊
Japanese POW camps in ww2: 🗡😈
Nah.
Japan didn't even bothered with POW on ww2.
@@quedtion_marks_kirby_modding they did build small huts and beat up Allied soldiers for fun
sometimes they did it for information though
either that or they forced the captured soldiers to work in mines then killed them when they were no use to them anymore
Great video! Thank you!
I love reading about WWI! This was a really good video!
Very interesting!
Alright now you got to get alternate history hub to do "What if the Taisho period never ended."
Yeah, because the chronically ill Emperor is going to live forever
WW1 Japan: Let's treat em nice and stuff, make em cozy, they miss their home
WW2 Japan: Lol, let's torture people
Nice video! Very interesting topic aswell!

*EmperorTigerstar When are you going to Make a video about The Cod wars I-II-III don’t Forget denmark was involved in the second cod war*
a nice nugget of unknown history
Does this remind you of Norway's prison system and how hospitable it is?
So... How does one get into this camp
I want an anime about this
I want to go
Sounds like certain camp in Poland
Music used?
I think the reason they were treated so well was Japan wanted to show the European powers that it was every bit as civilized as they were.
I don't know much about this subject but this seems like a good point
Some of the European powers, like Russia and Austria-Hungary, weren't so civilized when it came to the treatment of POWs.
okay
Japanese POW camps ww1: :)
What happend to the men who stayed when the second world war started?
Nobody:
Not a soul:
Germans in Bondo: *this sushi is better than sauerkraut*
Did any of those German troops fight for Japan in ww2?
and the world war 2 thing is scary because it's in the showa period

UA-cam must be saved... if you want more info, go to The Game Theorists and watch their newest video, but this is quite serious and we must keep content creators afloat so that their lives aren’t ruined. We have one month to work with, so make it count.
So when the Allies introduced monarchist democracy in Japan in 1945, that wasn't actually as unprecedented as I thought before
*sigh* nothing really changed about Japan's government, except that now they weren't allowed to do warcrimes and the military had less of a role. THAT'S IT! People forget how little the Japanese government changed.
@@DaDARKPass So you're saying the Japanese government was basically already democratic before 1945, other than that the military actually decided everything?
I mean I guess maybe they had democratic parliamentary elections but the military had some de facto power as well? Could you elaborate more on that?
@@cheydinal5401 Since the 1800s, Japan had a constitutional monarchy. However, in the 1920s and 30s a person in the Japanese military called Hideki Tojo made himself Prime minister of Japan. That was, until in 1945 when he committed suicide.
@@DaDARKPass So before that, it was basically like the Emperor was head of government and like a Presidential figure, and interacted with parliament, needing support for laws there?
@@cheydinal5401 Ok, you know Britain's government? Yeah, japanified that and you have the Japanese government after the meiji restoration.

China, Japan and Thailand are the only countries that where never colonised/conquered by the Europeans.
Mod Maker China was forced to cede upper manchuria and several coastal cities to Europeans, and Thailand was forced to cede Kampuchea to France.
it literally says in this video that a Chinese port city was taken by (I believe) Britain
