There was a POW camp in Japan during World War I that was surprisingly nice, so much so that troops didn't bother escaping.

There were four factors (my conjecture):
      1. Militarists, who were the driving force behind Japanese expansion in WWII, were not in full control of Japan.
      2. German advisors once trained the Japanese army, and so Japanese officers had respect for them.
      3. The Germans dealt the Japanese more casualties, and didn't easily surrender, possibly impressing the Japanese.
      4. Because there were so few prisoners, Japan could just provide their own guards. During WWII, because so many Japanese soldiers were needed to fight, Korean and Taiwanese guards were brought in to replace them. They were poorly trained, had low morale, and were said to be the most brutal of guards, passing down the brutal treatment they got from the Japanese to them.

Not many people know this, but the real origin of 'Naruto running' was actually from this POW camp. since normal running wasn't fast enough to escape. Many different forms were tried, The hand outstretched over your head for example. However this was deemed to be worse since it increased dragged. Eventual, young Ablert Gustaflof, after watching reading about fast automobiles, thought he had stumbled onto the perfect running form. With his upper torso bent forward, arms held straight behind him, he realized he could achieve tremendous speeds while running. He never did try to escape though. life in the camp was just too good. And thus this running technique was lost to the ages until it was researched after WW2 by some movie directors.
and thus the little know story about the creation of Naruto Running

This was very like the Curragh Camp for German and Allied POWs in Neutral Ireland during WW2. The POWs were treated very well by the guards were basically left to do whatever they wanted. They were able to go to nearby towns and got a weekly allowance to purchase items. They went on hunting trips, took part in a rowing club and watched films in the cinema. The Germans and Brits played football matches against each other. One captured RAF just walked out of the camp and got a bus to British owned Northern Ireland. Like in Japan, after WW2 ended some of the Germans stayed in Ireland and had families there.

Isn't it wierd that the town with such a nice prison camp's name is Naruto? Seems like such a Crazy Noisy Bizarre Town... Compared to the Bloody Stream that was the trenches, the prisoners could Stand Proud and know they are safe. You'd have to be nuts to try escaping, as nuts as if you tried Fighting Gold.
