See how several pirates set up a republic of sorts in the Caribbean during the 18th century.

A group of pirates taking over the Bahama Islands. Sounds like Pirates of the Caribbean movie then a game
But I wonder if the pirates used Nord VPN to stay safe online though
Only pirates from Western europe need a VPN.
When you download illegal roms you will need it to stay anonymous

Good video, but you should have made:
“What if the Rum wasn’t gone?”
If it was, the English would have to rum for their lives.
Anal Percussion comedy is dead and you killed it
Lady-friend of mine: "You're stranded on a deserted island with Johnny Depp and a basement full of rum. Why would you want to leave?"
Gary Bridges
“You’re stranded on a deserted island with Johnny Depp” is a pretty decent reason to escape.
Turkiye wouldn’t exist.
Brings me back to Assassin's Creed Black Flag.
Edit: As soon pressed enter, of course you bring it up. HAHAHA
@sailing smooth15 He meant when he finished the comment, the video brought up the subject of Assassin's Creed.
But this time, you can refight the legendary ships for fun in the same game or just have more.

@@lain-ih6jj, No need to say more. I have to agree with you.
It's actually kinda funny how the translation for corsair (corsario) actually means privateer in Spanish and not just a privateer for the French
It's the same in Polish as well, korsarz comes from corsair and was used for any raiders working under any government (not just the Polish crown).
Latviski also korsārs just means capable pirate, no loyalty to France required.
In Turkish the word for pirate is Korsan
That fact that you made Spain Red and England Yellow at 1:30 should be considered a crime.
"Picarón" is merely the adjective "roguish" in Spanish.
Makes sense, since we could say we technically invented rogues.
You handsome rogue.
Fun fact: Picarón en argentina is used as an adjective to describe, usually a young man/teen, who is fooling others / getting what he wants without hurting others.
Example:
-Did Sheila gave you her number?
-Oh yes, I told her I was sent by her cousin to go get her personal data for the experiment.
-Does that cousin exist?
-Idk
-PICARÓOOOON!
And the spanish/mexican "vacqueros" (vaca=cow, so "cow-herder") were the origin of the classic cowboy image. Even the name was anglicized as "buckaroo"
I was at a flea market several years ago and the police were arresting a man for piracy. He was selling boot leg movies. His response was "what I don't even own a boat."
I’m sorry I just learned that you can form Pirate Nations in EU4, and now this video came out. Wow

Pirates are one of those images that got changes by pop culture, like Spartans, Romans, and even the Schutzstaffel from WWII.
How was the SS changed, just out of curiosity?
@@bannermanigans They're black now.
No, I frankly have no idea
The biggest problem with these images is that they are unchaging. For example a roman soldier form year 0 would be very different form the roman soldier of year 400.
@@bannermanigans Well they are shown by Hollywood as blothirstiy and triger happy why hated everyone but their own which they where very much not.
Few see them as the changing image that they where. At firsts the german workers national socialists party armed branch, than the national guard of Germany that answered to the party, than the non german volunteers that wanted to fight, and finally gurila forces that would never surrender.
@Muhammed Enam Ahmed 170041036 White are europians, north asians, mongoloids, east asians, north americans, and south south americans. Dont insult any of these peoples by calling them white as in white skin was their most important characteristic.
Anyway WW2 took place before the invention of skinerian tacticks, meaning only 2% of soldiers would shoot to kill if they where not being shot at and 25% wouldnt even ever shoot at all. For the men of the SS who knew it was victory or death the shoot to kill would be over 15% and everyone would shoot atleast in the derection of the enemy, grately increasing their combat effectiveness. They where not elite units tho that would be the closest steryotipe out of the ones I know.

I'm so happy you did an episode on this! I love pirates! It's crazy how far back their history is and how much the form and shape of it has changed. I love angus konstams work on piracy and recommend anyone who really wants to learn more to check him out, he's written alot of books about piracy and maritime stuff. They're really good IMO.

When pirates have better morals than alot of nations
"When pirates have better morals than a lot of nations"
They really didn't though. These guys were notorious for rape, drunkenness, brawling, mutilation and torture, slavery, sadism, terrorizing innocents, extortion, kidnapping, and obviously destroying livelihoods via theft. There was a reason they were executed when caught.
As one example, Francois L'Olonnais was a French pirate who once tore the beating heart out of a prisoner and forced another captive to eat it just because he hated Spaniards. He garnered such a reputation for maltreating Spanish prisoners that they chose to fight to the death rather than be captured by him. This penchant for whimsical cruelty was typical of pirates and is well documented by primary sources. To give another example, there is also an account of Caribbean pirates raiding a treasure ship of an Indian prince, slaughtering all the men on board and gang raping the women until they got tired of it and threw them into the sea. Pirates were scum.
Their disdain for the rich and the avarice that led them to lead lives of piracy is not something admirable. Rather than working hard to etch out an honest living in society as best as their station allowed, in order to lead lives of luxury and pleasure, they profited off the backs of people who were just as bad off as they were before embarking on a life of debauchery, hedonism, and crime. As much as pirates could also show great compassion and kindness when they felt like it, they could only be described as selfish and immoral---even if many leaders of their day (and ours) were morally bankrupt also.
Post Script--As an aside, fittingly, L'Olonnais and his crew were eventually ambushed and captured by Indian cannibals, and he was eaten alive. On that note, all the best to those who took the time to read this.
@@KyleOfCanada maybe the pirates did horrific things on a small scale, but alot of nations have done things just as bad on a greater scale.
Equality alone does not equal morality. Look at every communist state for proof.
@J. L. Yes, and I've also been told that I'm fun at parties. Joking aside, my apologies if my comment came off as harsh. As a former history teacher, I felt compelled to leave a reply to the original post. All I wanted to get across was that, while piracy is an extremely fascinating topic to study and learn about, one should recognize it for what it was. _If one distorts the past, he will fail to understand the present, and risk ruining the future._ While there were admirable men and communities in the past that we can look up to, pirates and their lifestyle aren't among them. That being said, based on OP's reply, I think his comment was meant to reflect his disdain for nation states more than an admiration for pirates, (which is misguided) but that's a whole other can of worms I don't intend to address here. All the best!
@@gonkdroid9325 Many communist states were still unequal. Instead of giving power to the people many of them formed into dictatorships.

Just in time for my dnd homebrew pirate campaign
Awesome video! really funny that I found it while procrastinating finding primary sources about pirates lmao. im writing an essay about how they invented an enlightenment society before enlightenment thinkers did! seeing this pop up in my subscription feed was so cool lol
3:50 - I really wish you delved more into the original meaning of the word as basically people that would set up bases in the Carribean to sell provisions (such as smoked meat, where the term derives from) to pirates. As far as I understand, the term started to get the usage you describe after the Spanish started to raid such bases in retaliation for pirate raids, prompting angry (and now salary-less) bucaneers to join pirates en masse. I don't know for sure though and would love to see a clarification somewhere.
The next video should be a colab with AlternateHistoryHub titled "What if the rum was never gone?"

Seriously, y’all need to watch Black Sails if you like this sort of thing, it’s basically Treasure Island meets Assassins Creed Blackflag. I object to the detail @ 5:53 that they equally distributed plunder. Many known pirate codes had preference for certain positions, like the captain, other officers and talented artisans. It's still pretty equal though, with the captain getting 2-5 times a regular sailor. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirate_code#Examples
