Hi Paul, great video I would like to know if there is a time estimate on the flashing off of the ethanol. Im using this product on the sapele on my boat and wondered how long to leave it before sealing it with an Epoxy coating and the n varnish. Any ideas Thank you
@@PaulLockwood I'm either going to seal it with Liberon NATURAL FINISH INTERIOR VARNISH.... or Liberon FINISHING oil ... or a MIDWAX Polyurethane. I managed to buy all three to test but I dont know whats best. I really want to avoid getting a sticky finish
Hi Paul, Great honest video. Have you ever used sponge brushes to apply the stain. I'm wondering if it would be a happy medium between a normal brush and also using paper towel. I don't know how you can make a review video without mentioning the products used. Take care Paul. Cheers, Huw
Thank you Huw. Have to mention the product as that's what I'm reviewing. The sponge brush would be a lot better, never had any before but do keep meaning to buy some.
As far as I'm aware it should work on all wood. Like with all stain if the surface is too smooth then it will not soak in too well, which is why end grain always goes darker as it's more porous.
@@PaulLockwood Hi Paul, the product worked really well on pine food. I just finished doing the legs of my desk. You'll probably laugh but I used a kitchen sink sponge to apply the dye, first i did it in circular motion and 3 seconds later wiping off the excess with the grain of the wood. I did two coats of this where necessary. You are the only guy on UA-cam who did a review of this product, which is mind blowing. You were right about not sanding to make it smooth, i believe that 180 is enough to have it sanded to absorb enough product and enough to remove all scratches cause by the orbital sander. Tomorrow I will sand the entire top of desk, which will be a big challenge since it is damaged and has thick coats of finish from previous state. I will sand it all the way to bare wood using 100-120 grid sandpaper to avoid holes and deep damage and then work my way up to 180 grit for a clean scratch free surface. Hopefully the Spirit wood dye will go on evenly!
@@MKRM27 I used it for pine wood and it turned out fine. It was blotchy in some areas but it couldnt be perfect, wood conditioner doesnt exist in my country
No, don’t use it much but thought I’d give a review when I did so people can see what it’s like. I think because it’s so watery it’s trickier to get an even finish.
Great video, lots of useful information as always and I´m staying as a subscriber despite the huge amount of advertising(???) mentioned below... Thanks for posting!
I used this on reclaimed scaffold boards and it looks NOTHING like this here. Has a reddish tint and looks quite uneven. I wouldn't recommend it on softwoods that aren't planed smooth.
That will be the case with almost any type of wood as it will soak more into end grain and therefore be darker and give a different colour finish. It’s very watery so will soak in very quickly where it can.
Liberon don't recommend it for hardwoods. They say water based dye should be used for softwoods, such as pine. They claim that their water based dyes do not raise the grain.

Sorry I can’t really help with that. Only used this a few times on small projects.
Six hours
Can I use this for a computer desk?
No reason why not as far as I'm aware. Ideally you want to seal it after so it doesn't run if it gets wet.

@@PaulLockwood I have used them for gluing up and they worked really well. Huw
I sanded up to 180 grit. do i need to sand more for the dye?
The higher grit you sand the more sealed the pores in the wood close, so I would say 180 is plenty.
Hey Paul, was thinking about buying this product. Will it work ok on pine wood please?

This spirit dye is for dense hardwoods like mahogany and oak. It is not recommended for soft wood.

Thank you Den. I think UA-cam have changed the way they put in adverts as I've not changed anything as to my selections.
Have you got anything in the light oak dye please?

It says on the tin that it’s for dense hardwoods.

Only 4350 subscriptions, but a lot of advertising. Not many will join. Subscription ended!
I've not changed any settings, I think it is UA-cam changing on how they place their adverts. They are obviously trying to push more through.
I assume you might not know how youtube, or the internet works
