I abandoned cold wax and oil almost a month ago and also oil sticks. This inspired me to return to oil sticks as I have discovered that sticks and all types of “crayons” are an essential part of my mark-making artistic process. Having moved indoors to an air conditioned atmosphere the oil sticks are firmer that’s they were and so not as smooshy and therefore more pleasing for me to work with. I am still not a huge fan but happily playing and exploring with them. Thanks for the inspiration 🖌️
Glad this inspired you to explore a little further. I wasn't too keen at first, and even this time around, it took me a bit to figure out how they can work in my practice. Now I'm glad I took the time to understand them. Good luck and enjoy the process. Who knows where your studio play will lead.
Cool. Admittedly I liked the messy periphery on the orange black piece before you did the 45 degree angle tape pull … nearly as much as the clean edges? You?
How wonderful to see this, thanks so much. The Paul deMarrais oil sticks look wonderful, I checked out his website too. Will be great to see demo on edges too. I have one oil stick but thinking of investing in a set. I primarily create tonalist paintings. Thanks again, this was great!
I’m totally inspired by your demonstration with oil sticks. Those colors! Wow! I’ve only used oil pastel, but these seem so rich and creamy. Would love to try these! Maybe I will!❤
They are gorgeous in every way .. if you like gooey, buttery, glorious mediums with intense pigment. If you do, I encourage you to grab a few and have a play! Thanks for your comment and for watching!
@@mariannemitchellwholeart I’m going to try them! I’m not necessarily a fan of gooey stuff, but just so intrigued and in love with the intense colors and how they mix!! Beautiful! Again thanks for introducing them to us! ❤️
I just came across your site and need to learn more regarding the use of oil sticks! Thank you for all the great information - I look forward to watching more of your videos! :)
Very informative! I have oil sticks but didn’t know how to use them. Sometime would you demonstrate how to use soft pastels in your work and how to seal them once used in a painting. I have tried and the spray varnish makes them look like small specks instead of the way I used them (smooth) on the painting. I tried workable fixative the same results. I know artist use them especially in abstract.
Great. I hope you start to experiment with them. Let me know how it goes. As for soft pastels, I don't really have any and haven't worked with them for years. Unless you mean oil pastels. I do use oil pastels - see a video about I work with those here: ua-cam.com/video/dRqjT4z894w/v-deo.html. I don't use fixative for them. I keep them between sheets of glassine or wax paper or frame them up.
I really like the idea but my oils sticks are decades old and more crust that soft inner centre. I do however have some gouache paint sticks so got busy with them. I soon found that a spritz of water kept them moist so I could add and mix colours, the catalyst wedge worked well but fingers were better! So satisfying!!
Thanks to your videos on using oil bars and sticks. I have become obsessed with the whole process. I’m wondering if there’s a place where we can share our work I’d love to see the work of others and also share mine. Thanks so much.
Hi Donna! So glad you shared your story about how my videos got you hooked on oil pastel and bars... Love this!! And indeed there is a place for you to post your work and see others as well. I invite you to join the Whole Artist Mastery Community! Here is the link for more information and to sign up. I hope to see you there! 🙂🙏
loved this....i've been using Paul's oil sticks for a while now, i also like them better than RF partly due to the smell....i find RF had a stronger smell....silly perhaps, but they also seem less expensive...and he is a great guy to deal with :)
Thanks for sharing this, and I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the video. I enjoy both paint lines, and they're both small businesses, so either way you go, you support the creative, entrepreneurial spirit which I love. Appreciate the comment!
Thanks Linda. I don't plan to varnish them. Unlike oil pastels, these will dry. I'll store them between sheets of glassine to protect them but that's it. Appreciate the question.
Beautiful organic results. Looks fun to explore! Oh, the colors!!
The colors and feel are wonderful if you like buttery, gooey, luscious paint!
GREAT IDEA! BEAUTIFUL PAINTINGS! SOOO FUUUN!
glad you enjoyed it, Awilda! thanks for your interest...
Beautiful! Loved watching your process. Thank you for sharing!
and thank you, Leela, for your kind comments!

Thanks for sharing this. I’m inspired to try this. Do you varnish these small paintings on paper? Or any other finish you use on them?
Thanks Linda. I don't plan to varnish them. Unlike oil pastels, these will dry. I'll store them between sheets of glassine to protect them but that's it. Appreciate the question.
