I cringe when I saw “Oil sticks” they are the Bane of my existence! All joking aside, I became jaded with them because I was told by my visual art specific high school to buy it, and we were never taught how to use those stupid things (We were told to specifically to buy the Shiva oil sticks I remember), so we wasted money on sticks we weren’t even going to use or learn to use and they were a nightmare to use when I was a high school student. Part of it was due to the dried oil on top to keep it from fully drying out and it *was not explained this was the case*. So I’m going to be honest that I kinda wished you were given these back then so I could have at least learn what they did so I could use them more effectively back then lol.

Nice work ! Amazing for a first go with oil sticks. It would be interesting to see where you could take them using them with oil paints, so each could be used for their strength. Oil paints are often all about layering, and people work in them for months. It can take weeks or months for them to dry, depending on how much linseed oil, or other thinner is used, so it’s not a medium to rush.

  • @mjpete27

I have used these sticks before and they lay down the sketchy first layers so easy, then I used them in combination with my palette to mix more colors and apply them to the canvas. This eliminated the stretching of the canvas. If you want the canvas to tighten up you can spray the back with water and let it dry, then the canvas tighten up between coats. I would like to see you work with soft pastels? I have recently started using them and they have been quite a challenge! Let's see how you work with this rather difficult medium!! I suggest a UA-camr to watch is Alain Picard If you can work in or like his style this is a great accomplishment! So Go Jazza Go!

Idk why exactly. But i think the oil sticks turned out better. They do 100% both look great & have their own ups & downs. But i enjoy the final look and seemingly a bit more detail to the oil sticks. I know it took more work. Which is one of the cons for the sticks. Idk. They seem to be just a very different art medium. But both very beautiful in their own way. I reallllly want to get my hands on some of those oil sticks now. I've never tried using them. Awesome video !! As usual, Thanks for the in site!!

  • @yeshuaiscomingbackrepent2357

I like the paint sticks painting the best! Good work! I have found that painting with the oil sticks is best if you paint over acrylic, both paintings I have done were that way. The acrylic adds strength to the canvas and it doesn't bow as much.
