  • I tested oil paint sticks, and it might be the most satisfying art supply I've tried in a LONG time. Is it like an oil pastel? Kind of, but no. Is it like a crayon? Not really. Oil paint? Just watch the video to find out! These are AWESOME!

It was a real pleasure seeing what you did with these, Mira! Interestingly, oil paint sticks started as an industrial product (for all-weather marking on wood, stone, and metal), adopted by 20th c. artists for broad, expressive drawing and painting applications. The very first artist's oil paint sticks were made to specifications for an art materials brand by the same company that made industrial oil paint marking crayons, and the product category has expanded ever since! Conservation efforts are underway to determine which colors and what brands were used by Basquiat, so there is new research being done right now ! Since they are based on a drying oil, oil paint sticks do cure to a durable finish that can be varnished, unlike oil pastels which are made using non-drying oils. Thanks again for this exciting presentation!

I'm not Mira, but I do regularly use both oil pastels and oil sticks. To me, they're fairly different from one another. Think of an oil stick as really thick oil paint. It dries like oil paint, while oil pastel never dries. From what I understand, different oils are used in the production of pastels. I think oil sticks have a much smoother consistency than most oil pastels (although I've never tried Sennelier, they might be comparable). Anything you can do with oil paint, you can do with oil sticks. Although, without a brush or palette knife, you can't necessarily get too detailed. If you wanted to pair oil sticks with oil pastels, it'd be best to use oil sticks as your first layer, allow it to dry, and then apply the pastels on top. Oil sticks are pretty expensive, which is a bummer, but there are several videos here on UA-cam that teach you how to make oil sticks using oil paint and white beeswax. Another thing to know about oil sticks is that they do dry between uses, so you'll often have to peel the dried outer layer off the sticks before you use them. On one hand, it can seem wasteful, but on the other hand, they're a little less messy, and you only have to peel off a small area to access the wet paint and draw with it. Hopefully that all makes sense.
Oil stick brands: R&F are super expensive, Sennelier are a little less, but I think the Jack Richeson Shiva pro oil sticks are great, and they're more affordable. (But not the florescent colors, those are terrible.) Also, there's a guy named Paul deMarrais who hand makes his own and sells them on his website, at around $5-6/ stick, but his full set of 35 colors barely costs more than the R&F set of 12. (I haven't tried his yet, but I've heard good things.)
Can you tell I love oil sticks? 😅

The paint sticks from Markal and Art Primo are much cheaper like $4 each where’s the ones from R&F are around $15-$18 at most places. R&F paint sticks are definitely better quality and have a wider range of colors but if you’re looking for paint sticks without having to drop half a paycheck on them I’d recommend either Markal or Art Primo. Complimenti, è uno dei video più sinceri che abbia visto, è bello vedere la rottura di uno schema mentale. Grande insegnamento, per te e per chi ti segue. Buona vita!

I love that painting. For an experiment it sure came out like you knew what you were doing with your supplies. I can't wait to see more of these oil stick art pieces from you. And now I wish I could afford them! You are bad about making me want stuff....lol. Too bad in poor....or good thing I'm poor?...lol.

Yep! Oil sticks are kind of becoming a thing. R&F brand is getting more attention, but there are other brands too. R&F is likely the highest quality of all the ones out there, I think. And they are the highest priced too, but from what I’ve seen, the quality is the best…the highest pigment load. I only have 1 R&F sample set and the rest are from Shiva/Jack Richeson. I really haven’t put any of my oil sticks through their paces so it’ll be fun to see what you create. 😊

It looks great, makes me curious to try myself...but I am not sure if this would be my medium. What about more detailed paintings? Can you use them there, too? They seam way to big for me.

I don't know if you cover this in the video as I am still watching it but what is the difference between these and oil pastels? Can you use a brush and oil to blend and paint with oil pastels? I've always wanted to try out oil paints but they are so expensive and I barely know anything about how to use them etc. I have seen that they do water mixable oil paints but have no idea if they are similar to actual oil paint due to my complete lack of experience. It would be really cool if you could check them out and tell us your opinions. They do some really affordable sets too so they would be an inexpensive alternative to oils for people who can't afford the "real thing" 😂

Thanks so much for taking this “leap” for us! Very interesting medium. I didn’t even know about it. Looks like fun and a lot less mess.

Thank you for trying those. I saw them at my art store and I just thought "meh, it probably like oil pastel, not interesting ". I definitely had those in my wishlist.
