Healthy options to start the day for your kids

- 12 week fitness project - Week 1 guideline - A nutritious, fuss free meal to start the day.
When our children wake up from an overnight fasting state, what we feed them first thing will not just decide how good their entire day goes but also how their growth is. This meal is especially critical for children around puberty as it sets the tone for hormonal harmony. In fact, how well they are able to unwind in the night and fall asleep is also dependent on how they start their day. A nutritious, fuss free meal then is the need of the hour.
Here are the options -
A) If short on time and can only have a quick meal before leaving for school - options are -
1. Milk - if they like the taste of milk.
Ensure that it is -
• Full fat
• Locally sourced
• Without malted or chocolate powders
• With jaggery/ chyawanprash (winters) or sugar/ gulkand (summers) or a homemade laddoo
• No milk substitutes like almond milk or soya milk, etc.
2. Nuts and dry fruit-
• eat as a nut + dry fruit combo
• Nuts - pista, badam, kaju, walnut
• Dry fruits - raisin, dates, khareek, apricot
• If constipated - overnight soaked raisins
• Girls on period - khareek with ghee
3. Fresh fruit -
• Local
• Seasonal
• Banana all months
• Bor, chickoo, peru, orange, grapes - currently in season
• No fruit that has travelled more than 150 km to reach your plate or comes in plastic packaging
B) If there is time to have proper breakfast - Follow this-
• Have a hot, homemade nashta - poha, Upma, idli, dosa, paratha, dalia, etc.
• Nothing from a packet - cornflakes, oats, juices, etc.
• If poor immunity - ragi cooked in milk or even water
• If weak digestion, acidity or period issues - lahya - jowar or ragi flakes (look like pop corn) in milk or roasted in ghee with salt and pepper
Also note -
• Father’s contribute in - cooking, serving and watching over them while eating.
• Kid above 7 years - pick own bowl/plate, rinse and put in kitchen sink.
Remember, well begun is half the battle won.

2 years back I switched the milk from Amul /Warna to A2 from a local dairy farm which enable open grazing for cows. The benefits are immense. My daughter's health improved significantly. Consumed this local milk during my second pregnancy and also for weaning my second child. The results have been amazing on both of us. I lost the entire pregnancy weight effortlessly and the child has an excellent apetite and immunity.
My only purpose of elaborating my experience here is to express my gratitute to Ma'am Rujuta and the service she has extended to mankind and environment. All my gratitude and love to her.

Also, I think that a majority of our population cannot afford to include nuts and dry fruits in their diet on a daily basis. Please suggest alternatives.. I think there are perfectly healthy people who have never got a chance to eat dry fruits and nuts.

Mam my husband and my two daughters 7 and 17 had TB one after other and my little one does not have a good immunity I follow all you say seasonal,traditional..I follow it myself however it's very hard to inculcate in them and I have to use different tricks to feed them food I cook they like junk food.i don't know how to make them understand the importance of eating right..plz make a video for mothers like me.

We stay in country where they cant produce much,locally they eat fish rice

However no matter how much we eat at home, i think these days the nutritional value of ingredients had gone down and thus impacting our immunity and so these days kids get high fever frequently. So what is your opinion on taking nutritional supplements, does it really help?
Lovely video ma'am. I am happy that I am following it for my 9 year old daughter.
But as someone has already asked, what to do if locally sourced milk is not available? In the Gulf countries we get only packed milk. It is written on the can, full fat and 100% fresh cow's milk, no powder or preservatives added.
Also, local fruits produced are dates. So I add natural dates syrup to the milk. Is that okay?

Should we be avoiding milk on such days and I have been giving her dudh chai on the days she has cough. Also we follow "no banana " for such days. N thanks god my 8 years son is so far from all these chocolates, powders, maggi, chips, Kurkure, pizza, burger. I prefer to give him homemade food. He drinks milk as it is n has whole boiled egg before going to school. Now I'm proud of myself.

Such a nice video! Loved it! However can you please elaborate on adding chocolate powders to milk? Does it reduces the milk nutrients or are you suggesting to avoid it due to environmental reasons purely? Because me and my sister both do love the idea of having milk everyday, we still consume even as adults but we love with with chocolate way more than plain ones! Are we consuming milk for nothing all these years or do we need to be more environmentally conscious despite getting the nutrition? I have a question, you said no to cereal with oats or old fashioned oats which we cook at home?
What about few local dairy farms, who use hormonal injections for cows/buffaloes to produce milk? The food inspectors need to check on these. In Mumbai there were several local dairy farms where this was practised and they were caught red handed and selling adulterated milk!! How do we check if the locally sourced milk is not adulterated??
