In my opinion the threat of eternally separated families is extremely sinister. It was the driving force behind my fear and controlling tendencies toward my children when I was a member 😥

One thing that came to my mind while watching: there was push-back when the church tried to dictate which sexual positions were ok and they backed down. It may not be about "permission" but it's definitely applicable to behavior. It probably came to mind because I didn't have any idea about sexual consent until after I left.

Cremation is STILL discouraged! My FL bishop tried talking my mom out of cremating my dad: I said “who’s gonna pay for the funeral? The CHURCH?!” They said they’d pay IF WE PAID THEM BACK!!!🤬🤬🙄🙄🙄🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ I said tough shit he’s getting cremated! We privately buried him in a friend’s yard in my hometown.

The church absolutely encourages the separation of families when they do any of the things you mentioned, including helping a believing spouse to find another believing spouse due to a divorce that stems from one partner disbelieving or no longer wanting to be married to the other person.
So the church's assertions on families are half-truths, which are amendable by every wind of doctrine that suits their purposes. You were far too gracious to the Mormonites on this one.

I have some personal experience with a few of these points, namely sleep deprivation. About a year ago, I (a minor) went on a stake trip to Nauvoo and a few adjacent areas. We had to get up at very early hours (4-6 am) and would get back to our (very sketchy) hotel late (11:30-past midnight) I don’t believe that this was done with the clear purpose of helping us to “feel the spirit” and/or otherwise wear us down, but it very likely contributed heavily to the experience. This trip was extremely rough for me, since it incited me (ignorant but non believing and suspicious) to look deeper into the history, and that triggered my shelf to completely collapse. Being PIMO and immersed in the church with no possible escape just straight up sucks. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk, I can answer further questions.

"Threaten to harm family and friends..." I would say not so much anymore, but there's the "blood oath" they used to do in the temple. Plus, in the history of the church with the Danites being the enforcers(under Brigham Young's lead) of the church's rules, and would enforce with death if they felt necessary. So, maybe it doesn't fall into the BITE model for that category right now, but it has definitely fallen perfectly in line in the past.

  • @QuinnPrice

BITE is a great model to see control in action. Remember, any person or organization who deceives you and, when uncovered, can't own their deception.... avoid at all costs. That's the LDS church. They also use a lot of coercive influence tactics like guilting, bait and switch when it comes to prophetic standards, post-life fear/threat, and accusing those who dare question their truth/authority claims.

I will also disagree on separation of families. The extreme pressure for unmarried people to give up their babies when they have an unexpected pregnancy, and the full support for the adoption indu$try, is absolutely a family separation policy. The purpose of those policies is control and indoctrination of children.

As far as threats of physical harm, although it's not in the temple ceremony today, in the early church you had the recite that you would agree to have your throat slit from ear to ear and your heart ripped out and your belly cut open and disemboweled, then they eliminated the recitation of the penalties, but you had to draw your thumb across your throat. Symbolically is to slit your throat from ear to ear and draw your thumb across your your stomach to represent being disembowled for revealing what happens in the temple ceremony?. And as far as murder, I don't know what the early church did, but Brigham Young did say in the journal of discourses that rather than apostates flourish here, I will pull out my Bowie knife and righteousness to the plummet so he was suggesting that apostates should be murdered,

I think your point is valid, however, when I served my mission, if I was obedient, then I had to be in bed by 10:30 and up by 6:30 which is exactly 8 hours sleep. Even with seminary, you’d be counselled “early to bed early to rise” no one would force you to stay up late. Even mutual ended by 8:30 giving you 2 hours buffer to get your 8 hours sleep. Sleep deprivation is when you are forced to stay up very late, then forced again to wake a couple hours later for whatever reason, then maybe you’ll be allowed to sleep another hour or so before waking for the day, and repeating this cycle for weeks and months at a time. Military basic training often uses this technique to teach absolute obedience within a chain of command. I think the Mormon church doesn’t fall anywhere near this level of extreme sleep deprivation. I agree mission rules are insane and cult like, but I think the church rather prefers you get adequate sleep…. Within the parameters they establish, of course

Some of the church’s recent behavior, I would say, does fall under harming aspects of the Behavior control point. This includes their behavior and actions involving mandatory reporting and abuse within the church. It also includes how members are encouraged/told to behave in response to perceived social threats. If a spouse is becoming inactive/unfaithful or is doing something against the church and its values, you are supposed to divorce. As a general statement, this very commonly creates a culture of alienation and rejection, especially among the more orthodox members.

I understand your point on "separation of family," but disagree here. A great example is one of the most current Mormon Stories Podcast, with Rian Anderson, when she came home from her mission after 1-1/2 yrs her family had left the church and moved. She was still struggling with believing the trust of the church and was ultimately encouraged by her President to not have contact with her family (control to the max). So, by just her experience, I would say that relationships with non-Mormon or ex-Mormon familyi members are not encouraged. So, maybe this is more of a Control issue, but is does encourage separation of family as well. (I get that this may not fall into the category as it has to do more with how you deal with non or ex Mormon family, not just within the scope of the full-on Mormon family).

For anyone looking to validate the issue of prophets speaking as men, look no further than all these cases where a behavior or action is discouraged but not forbidden.
Members accustomed to heavy authoritarianism are prone to view these cases as the brethren being liberal, but it’s just the opposite. They have nothing to fall back on but tradition, and can’t bring themselves to just let it be.
The aversion to cremation is ludicrous. Burial plots can be expensive-that has been an added hardship to a family already grieving. And for what? Tradition.

They sound more relaxed than the Catholic Church. I’m surprised about that. And it sounds like a lot of the beef with them is around clothing, waiting until marriage, and victim blaming. Which, almost the entire outside of the church people and culture did as well. And the originof the church around making it up. Which isn’t so bad because all cultures have fables they believe in. Social psychology says you need stories in a culture to keep a people together. The polygamy origins are disturbing but they changed that, but are left with polygamy in heaven. Man, they should at least change that and I wonder if they would as they seem to use sex to dangle in front of the men to motivate them towards something.

I don't think the church uses the extreme behavior control methods that you highlight in this video, but the behavior of many members is not normal. It's honestly uncomfortable being around them sometimes because of the way they have been conditioned to act. All of this is presented to them like it's their choice: i.e. get cremated if you want, use permenant birth control methods if you want, but it's not really thier choice at all. Members who make these choices are often shamed and vilified (even if they have legitimate reasons for choosing those things), and many members who would otherwise have chosen something like that often make a less desirable, less authentic, or outright wrong decision for themselves because of religious pressure. I think in some ways that's worse than blatant control. At least with blatant control, you don't feel guilty or blame yourself for your actions because disobeying results in such extreme consequences. However, when you are merely "discouraged" from doing certain things, the church not only controls your behavior, but it puts the blame on you when you "choose wrong."

They would encourage you to divorce your spouse if they weren't a member or if they left the church. There are also social pressures/stigmas when someone has inactive family or family members that leave the church, causing familial separations where social distance and disowing occurres because of church teachings.

When you mentioned murder, this got me thinking about the Brigham Young doctrine of blood atonement. He taught that there came a time when the blood of Christ was not enough to cover your sins (for some kinds of transgressions) and so it had to be your own blood. This is not to confused with capital punishment for a heinous crime. If your sins were serious enough, he directed that your own blood be spilled to atone, and it was! I think the Mormon church tries to downplay this whenever possible because it's very embarrassing for them. Murder? They most certainly hide this historical fact from modern Mormons.

So in short The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints doesn't do anything that is the least bit cultic. Got it. And nothing cultic means NOT a cult. If it doesn't walk like a duck or quack like a duck and definitely doesn't look like a duck, it can't be a duck. I love how you exaggerated "They don't go to the same level in heaven." Yet you didn't mention the possibility of members in the highest level being able to visit family in lower levels, though the reverse isn't true. But even if they couldn't, it's still not as dramatic as EVERY OTHER CHRISTIAN church, where "good" family members go to heaven and "bad" go to hell, never to see each other again. And this threat is held over the heads of members of all other Christian churches, and has been used as a reason by many parents to lock their children in the basements to keep them from "sinning" and not making it to heaven.
