I still find it so funny how the developers of this game just casually released a masterpiece the same day it was revealed.
I find it even funnier how their game lineup consists of The Evil Within 1/2 (Spooky bloody horror game scouring the darkest depths of the human psyche), ghostwire Tokyo (Pretty creepy game about haywire youkais taking over a city), and then this (Funny cyberpunk rhythm hack and slash game)
@@Argnos2293 The director did a stream with some people from bethesda and I remember him saying that this had been his dream game for years and he just managed to find the exact time where he'd be able to bargain for it
It even made Forspoken into Forgotten just by being shadow dropped.
Any Attack on Titan fans here? Remember the song 2chi城 where towards the end you could hear the same "HEY" and "SHAH" that is sampled in this game when you attack? Tell me I'm not the only one this resonates with.
@@rheawelsh4142 Well kudos to him. It seems like he just crammed a bunch of stuff he likes into something he wanted to create and then what we got was this gem of a game. Absolutely brimming with charm and passion, it’s got a great vibe that grips people. Man deserves a raise for this.
I just noticed that Chai's "guitar" turns into an actual guitar with a high rank during combat along with voices cheering his name. I think this shows how inmersed he is in his fantasy.

For the record, the lead game designer of Hi-Fi Rush is one of the main game designers of Bayonetta 1 and Vanquish. That explains the Platinum feel.

Shinji Mikami was just an executive producer.
@@ThePreciseClimber Yes, Masaaki Yamada is one of the two lead designers on Bayonetta 1 and the lead designer of Vanquish.
A lot of people just assume Kamiya was the game designer for Bayo 1 because he directed it, but they're different positions entirely.
The same goes for Vanquish, Shinji Mikami is the director and he's credited as such, but Masaaki Yamada is the lead game designer.
Hi-Fi Rush absolutely nailed it. Its introduction, its explanation, and its release. Kudos to Tango.

@@dionysianapollomarx at this point I just think it's open world games. Building a game so massive seems like it's just asking for trouble. I've noticed a pattern. Whenever it's a handcrafted and more linear experience it's usually far more polished, but open world is usually littered with bugs.
@@HaplessOne Compared to most open world games, Eldin Ring was polished as hell, and actually had stuff in the world.
But most open world games are super buggy, and empty, and sometimes just designed poorly.
Very little has worse tendencies...except MMORPGs, majority of those are hardly games.

Hi-Fi Rush is one of the best surprises in a long ass time. The game has an art style that will be appealing forever, it's fun as hell, and it runs amazing. Easily a 10/10.
I'm a recent Xbox owner and this is the first time I'm happy to have an Xbox instead of a PlayStation lol. Hope they keep bringing these kinds of games

@@junior1388666 Guilty Gear actually will not only release for Xbox, but will have an open crossplay beta test in the next coming days.
But yeah, Sony still reigns in the exclusivity department, since most Xbox games also release for PC. GLad this is changing, tho, and Sony games are starting to come to PC, too. Still not ideal, but at least everyone doesn't need to buy two consoles. A console and a PC is a little bit more plausible to have.

With the presentation and the genres and styles, playing this game feels like how it felt to play games back during the ps2 era.
I haven't even played this game yet but yeah it's giving me PS2 vibes in the best way. It would just feel so natural to see Hi-Fi rush stand alongside Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, and Sly Cooper.

Hi-Fi Rush is EASILY my game of the year. It took a bit to win me over, but by mission 3 i was HOOKED. My literal dream game that was MIRACULOUSLY shadow dropped after 0 buildup. 11/10

Hang on, so on top of being all perfectly synced and with beautiful presentation and all of that... this game has TWO soundtracks for bosses? Original songs for streamer mode and licensed music on the normal mode? That alone deserves a replay.
You might find something interesting in a smaller title from about two years ago by name of No Straight Roads. It's shorter, not as in-depth and more boss-centric, but also VERY stylish and quite impressive for being a debut game for its studio. Works a bit different though, in that bosses attack in beat and rhythm with the music, but the characters attacking is done freely.
And every boss has *three* different versions of tracks: Base, EDM and Rock. Depending on how well or badly you do, the music shifts more to either Rock or EDM.
On top of that, there's also a Christmas update that added christmas versions of all tracks, AND the Encore edition added further new versions of all boss themes.
Encore Edition also features about 273 pieces of fan art hidden as collectable pieces of graffiti in the ingame world, with credits to the artists (-mine was FulkrosteianArt-).
A lot of love has gone into NSR, and though it's admittedly more rough and simplistic compared to Hi-Fi Rush, it deserves to be more known and remembered.
They have invaders must die by the Prodigy as one of the non streamer mode tracks.
@@jurtheorc8117 I want to say that NSR paved the way for Hi Fi Rush to exist. Mixing a rhythm game with an action platformer wasn't new but it wasn't quite stable as a concept until NSR crowdfunded its way. It had rough bits but I love it either way because that sort of concept wasn't done to such a tight concept despite the jank of the game.
Hi Fi Rush ABSOLUTELY took notes from NSR, or atleast the concept because if this game started production 2019 and NSR came out in 2020, I can believe it fine-turned this game.

It's absolutely wild to think that this vibrant and colorful rhythm action game was made by the same people that made the evil within which is almost on the exact opposite end of the spectrum that this game is on.
i am SO glad Forespoken got overshadowed by this game, its so unbelievably charming and polished, goodness GRACIOUS
And it released at $30 compared to Forespoken releasing at $70. Hi-Fi was also a Japanese game made with western ideas in mind, just like Forespoken. Hi-Fi is a hilarious big middle finger to Forespoken, and I love it.

NEO TWEWY, No Straight Roads, and Hi-Fi being my favs just for being great action games with great style.
Funny you’re mentioning NEO TWEWY. The Beat-Hits in HiFi-Rush really reminded me of the Beatdrop-mechanic in TWEWY. Not to mention you can dash around the overworld to the beat of the music in TWEWY, just like in HiFi-Rush.
They also share the similarity of both being kickass games.

Just beat the game and it's gotta be one of my all time favorites. What a great experience. It's too bad Max couldn't play it with the licensed music but kudos to Tango for writing some pretty great music to use instead.
They all are made to sound just like the original, save for the lyrics and tunes.

the streamer mode replacement tracks are surprisingly pretty great, so he's arguably not losing out on much.

It feels like a Uno-reversed knowing that this game was made by Japanese developers using Western art styles.
I truly hope Max plays this game again off stream with the licensed music. It really adds to the experience, especially the stage with Prodigy's Invaders Must Die.
The most fun I've had playing a game in what feels like 20 years, Tango absolutely blew me away.
I think it's cause it just felt like a game. Not a corporate product made to squeeze every cent out of you while you play with a real money shop always in the background. I honestly think many of us forgot the golden days of gaming. When we bought a full price game and got a full complete experience. I'm glad this game was made and it's getting praise.
And it came from tango of all places. I hated all their games prior to this and thought Mikami had lost his touch. But this game is fantastic! I'm on my second run already and I don't usually replay games as soon as i finish them. It's that good!

It’s very ironic for Chai to get hit with a Potemkin like move because his voice actor (Robbie Daymond) is the English voice actor for Happy Chaos, as well as the voice of Prompto from Final Fantasy XV, Goro Akechi from Persona 5, and Spider-Man from MvCI!
I hope he finishes the game. It's crazy how the game gets better and better as we progress. Normally it starts to get tiring or something, but no. It's all a great show geting to a end!

Rekka is basically this game's Senator Armstrong in terms of a bossfight and I absolutely love it.
There’s definitely some inspiration from what I can tell. The command grabs and charging attacks are somewhat similar.

I wish DMCA didn't exist dude, fighting QA-1MIL to Nine Inch Nails is the most BADASS thing to experience. The licensed music they use in this game are such superior choices for a game like this.

@@RenoKyrie I’ve heard some of the Original I like that they alter the licensed music in their own way. But still, to hear the music play, and see the bottom left list that it’s a Nine Inch Nails song is surreal. It’s the fact that I know these bands, and that I’ve heard these songs, and I get to play along with it as a beat’em up game, that’s just a feeling I can’t feel anywhere else.
Sad I missed the stream. Game reminds me of Jet Grind Radio series. Phil even said the game was partly inspired bc he couldn't get Jet Set Radio. Sega Dreamcast really did put a mark on gaming, sadly it came out way before it's time and I'm really happy I got to own one back in the day. Thanks Max for giving credit when it's due as always✌🏿

The game literally looks like a cartoon that would be given a premium time slot, I’m saying this as a compliment.
Gosh this game is like a breath of fresh air. It just is dripping with charm that you can't help to luv it. + the music in the game are instant hits for me. def goty for me already.
That grab in the intro reminded me of his Boss Rage episode trying to get to Oni and then getting bodied by Hugo at the end.

Microsoft sadly did not green lit this game it entered dev in 2017/18 before the buyout.

Watched a few minutes of this and decided to buy it myself. What a fun game! Can't wait to finish it and come back and watch the rest of Max's playthrough. Tango Gameworks really tried something new and smashed it out the park on this one.
54:00 If you don't play in "Streamer-Mode" Nine Inch Nails plays a song in this bossfight. The streamer-mode takes ALOT away from the musical side. The real soundtrack you hear when you play it normally is insanely cool.
Streamer mode OST is still really good.
This is a game like Evil West, a game that belongs when Viewtful Joe and No More Heroes released.

Tango may have been the true gem of the Zenimax purchase. They can do horror, they can do single player story driven games, they can do rhythm games, action. What can't they do.
And trust me Xbox needs studio's that can do single player story narrative games.

The whole game was amazing from start to finish, an rhythm action game! The story was rocking and characters were very interesting especially Chai and his friends! Gameplay was easy to learn, Overall it’s great game I glad I stuck around during these streams I didn’t regret at all!

Hi-Fi Rush was absolutely a welcome surprise to the gaming market. I'm honestly wishing game companies and developers in the future really consider releasing more games like this, where they don't spend upwards of a year releasing trailers and stuff. Just show me a nice trailer and drop the game ASAP, I think that's one very strong reason this game is succeeding so well right now.
the characters and art style are what do it for me. its one of the most fun new IP in a long time. i would love an artbook of this game. also which is the best waifu? peppermint or korsica? also 808 is a gem. if i could have a rpg with these characters in this world/art style i would be there day 1

The funniest part about this game to me is the fact that it's made by the same team that made evil within. I get that studios can change style, but this is a hard hard change.
It's a really good game. The gameplay is good, the story and characters have so much style and the music is all bops...every single one.
This is one of those games that makes me wish record labels would realize that if they license their song to a game it's their fault if somebody play's it on a stream. The stream safe tracks they got to replace the Boss music aren't bad, but we shouldn't have to have those to begin with.
Honestly the originals slap though. Wish they were on spotify, especially the ones you can buy on the jukebox.
Your perspective assumes that streaming is cleanly legal, which it is not. Right now, the state of game streaming is an equilibrium in which the major entities are all playing by honor rules. In some countries like Japan, their laws are clear enough that publishers will go after bigger entities like Hololive for streaming games without prior consent, they just don't bother going after individual streamers because it's not worth the effort.
Because games aren't static, there's an awkward legal area regarding transformative work. However, the music industry does not play ball here. Just because music is licensed for a game does not make it licensed for video content made using that game.
How the laws should be defined is a complex argument, but we can all agree that the current laws are a mess and the current systems are an awkward set of unclearly defined and ever changing boundaries.
@@effortlessfury That's exactly why they included similar music tracks performed by The Glass Pyramids. UA-cam is a hot mess and it is really easy to get copyright strikes and copyright claims once someone's else's songs get played on someone's channel. At the very least, it gets around the problems so people can enjoy the game streaming and otherwise.
When this game was announced, I knew this was Max type of game. He liked them fast action get your attention right away game.

He knows, after you beat the game, the game tells you there's another difficulty.

The Characters are very lovable. ScottFalco did a video about this game, and his description of "feels like a gamecube title, and that's a good thing" hits the vibe on the head.
This game is so captivating as a spectator! First time I've ever felt the satisfaction of a rhythm game so consistently through the screen.
There's a game in a similar vein to this game that came out a few years ago by name of No Straight Roads. It's definitely worth checking out and looking into. Hi-Fi Rush does have *amazing* production value and deeper mechanics over it, as well as just... more, but NSR is a game that I'd hate to be forgotten.
It was the debut title for its dev studio, and the devs have clear vision, imagination and talent, and i'd say they deserve more support and attention.
(Similarly so for a hack-and-slash/character action game by name of Soulstice that came out last year. Kinda rough in parts, but still does a lot of good stuff and the devs deserve the support).
On the subject of Music and Rhythm x (genre), there's an upcoming title by name of God of Rock that mixes rhythm gameplay with a Fighter. This might be an interesting one to look into as well.
(Sidenote: There's this PS2 title by name of Kya: Dark Lineage that's like a 3D Rayman-looking platformer, but the combat system is like tekken-- and quite in-depth, with various kicks, grabs, stun and mobility options for a game of that type. Could be neat to look further into as well)
Last few years have been pretty impressive in terms of that Rhythm x (genre) type mixes. First No Straight Roads, then Metal: Hellsinger and Bullets Per Minute, now Hi-Fi Rush and aforementioned upcoming God of Rock. Interesting times.
