that rivet was loose from the start for me. I drilled that out and put a bolt and lock nut there to take up that play. you did exactly like I did. made a huge difference!

Jeff, I really appreciate you leaving this comment. I couldn't recall if mine was loose or not when I first got it. Based on your comment, i imagine it was. How that is acceptable to the manufacturer, given the effect it can have on the performance, makes no sense to me. I wish they'd spend the extra 15 cents to use a nut and bolt like each of us has.
I can say that I've spread four different products since this modification and, like you, it appears to have made a big difference in the consistency on the distribution.

I agree, I thought a simple nut and bolt from the company would have been the way to go and crazy that wasn't done. Thanks for the video. Hopefully it helps some others as well as I thought mine was the only one as well

Can you completely remove the lower rod that goes from the bracket to the bucket? If so you can also add a plastic bushing on the "flattened" end of the rod where it goes through the bracket, thereby keeping the rod from wallering out the bracket over time. Those bushings are just a couple bucks at the strore.

Hi Jerry. Very good suggestion. I've considered this myself. Yes, the lower rod can be removed and a bushing added. You'd likely have to drill the hole out a bit to accommodate the bushing. However, I'm not seeing any signs of unusual wear, but it's something I'll continue to look for.

I have the exact same spreader just purchased last year. There is way too much play in all the connecting points. I will give this a shot and see how it works. Love everything else about the unit!!

I've had more consistent performance since making this mod.

Just ordered this spreader earlier today from Amazon and this was going to be my first modification prior to installing the handlebars. I am planning on replacing both rivets while I have the drill and tools out, the one you did and the one attaching the L bracket adjacent to the two jam nuts.

Hi Tom. I didn't see a need to replace the rivet at the L bracket. I'd be interested in hearing your take once you've received it and have had an opportunity to look it over.

@@BlackHoleDIY Received the spreader yesterday and it took about 10 minutes to complete the installation. Extremely happy with the spreader for my residential use. I have switched to organic fertilizers which requires a much heavier application rate and I also have been applying gypsum to condition the clay soil. I also apply an insecticide and a fungicide annually. Lawn looks great even after six weeks of 100° temperatures. Going to leave all rivets in place until the need arises and a thorough cleaning after each use will be in order. Thanks for the tip.

Doing well, thank you. Your grass is off to a great start this year! Mine is still coming out of dormancy, and I'm on the coast.

@@BlackHoleDIY Thanks! I’ve been ferting since early March. I had some damage from the snow, but the areas are filling in nicely considering we have not even started the real growing season. Excited to see how your grass comes in. Did you get the Mondo grass situation handled? I’m still fighting Bermuda in some areas, but it looks like it won’t be as brutal this year.

None of the mondo grass has returned, which is great. Just need the st. Aug to continue filling in. Will need to do some leveling in those areas a little later in the season.

Glad I wasn’t the only one! I’ve also noticed at
like anything below a 15 I cant get a medium sized granular to spread at all really. Like hardly any comes out. Might just be the granuals I’ve tried so far are just too large for a low setting, haven’t tried any milo yet.
Currently I’ve only used lesco 30-0-10 from lowes and sta-green lime. I was curious if you have any issues of it getting clogged up on lower settings? Makes it hard to make a lower rate application.

Hi Adam. You've described my experience as well. With the med/lg sized prill products that I've used I've had poor results with any setting below 14, even 14 is questionable at times. I use setting 16 for Milorganite and will go over the area twice, perpendicular passes, and it turns out to be almost exactly bag rate. I recently tried Scott's Bonus S which is very small prills. I used setting 11 and had to go over the area twice but came close to bag rate and it spread well at 11. I don't know if it's a psychological thing, but I do feel like I'm getting much better results since I made the modification to the spreader.

@@BlackHoleDIY I’ll have to give it a shot and see what happens! Do you by a chance know the size of the bolt you used?

What I used is 5/16 diameter.

Thank you for your comment. I realize "simple" fixes such as this may not be so simple from a manufacturing/sourcing standpoint but I appreciate you taking it into consideration. It would be great to see this enhancement on future products.
