    This spreader has served me well for about 10 years. I do lawncare on the side.
    Yes there is a learning curve, especially with the rates.
    I have since up graded to a comercial spreader with greasable bearings.
    Clean it after every use, store it indoors and dont lend it to your neighbors and it will last a lifetime.

      Hi @floridaswampman7648. Thank you for sharing your experience. I've got it dialed in nicely now and can be pretty confident when selecting the appropriate setting when using a new product. But like you, I can see myself going to a commercial unit in the future, however this one gets the job done in the meantime.

    I’m looking into this spreader myself. This is the one that I’ve found with the best reviews for quality and money overall! Unless you want to spend $500 on the Andersons spreader lol

    I own this same spreader too. I usually keep it on setting #22 for a 50 pound bag of Sunniland 7-0-20 fertilizer. I walk at a good clip and just a single pass. It works great for me. Good product.

      Onecrazywheel, thanks for sharing your experience. I know there will be others who find this information very helpful. I, too, have had good results with this spreader. It's used several times a year on mine and my neighbor's lawns (~18k sq. Ft. combined).

    Awesome video! Thanks for sharing your fertilizer settings. I have the same spreader without edge guard and put down some Milorganite at 25 setting and it was too much. Trying to get used to spreader it does a great job broadcasting the fertilizer.

    I like this spreader but my first experience was very poor. I was trying to spread a pre-emergent at a lower rate and at that rate it was too course of material for setting needed for the 3 drop openings and it did nothing but clog. When I opened it up for consistent application it was way to high. This is also a problem for very light material like a anti-fungicide where the spread rate was relatively low and material very light and fine. My solution was to tape 2 of the 3 openings up which required a larger single opening to flow from. It now works without clogging. I just pick the center opening and adjust my path according to the new coverage. This is a real nice spreader for the money and this is the only issue I have had to overcome. Well, I also replaced the plastic setting wingnut after it broke off with a metal one.

      Hi Mr Weebs. Thank you for sharing your experience. It is helpful to hear your solution, and I'm sure others will appreciate it also. Are you finding that when using only the center hole that the product spreads evenly left to right?

    I just purchased this spreader after reading all the positive reviews on Amazon. One note to fellow users, this is an exact clone of the Earthway 2150 and application settings for different products should work about the same so if you find the Earthway settings on a bag of product, you can feel comfortable using them for this Brinly. One question, you mentioned in the description that you throw to the tire marks of previous row, but for this spreader with a 10’-12’ that seems like a lot of overlap. Have you found that to be the case and would like say throwing to a few feet out from the tire marks would do the job without so much overage? Thanks for the great information!

    • @BlackHoleDIY
      @BlackHoleDIY  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Larry. Thanks for the comment! Most of the products I've applied seem to throw closer to 6'+ on either side of the spreader, so I try to keep my spacing between passes to that distance to assure as even coverage as possible. To answer your question, I think there is margin for error and not throwing directly to the tire track of the previous pass, though not ideal, would be ok. There have been times where my spacing between passes was +/-, and I didn't experience any negative visual effects. From my experience, the suggested spreader settings on the product bags assume you are doing a 50% overlap when spreading.

    How did you usually determine what setting was needed for fertilizer since most companies dont specify brinly on the bag. Did you usually go with a bit bigger or smaller number and did you usually use the scotts number as a basis to give an idea of where you need the brinly to be

    • @BlackHoleDIY
      @BlackHoleDIY  6 місяців тому

      Trial and error in many cases. After some experience you'll be able to gage the setting based off similarly used products. 14/15 has been a good setting for most store bought products with larger prills. If Earthway spreader settings are on the bag, start there. They are similar.

    Have this one. Biggest frustration has been that the cotter pin doesn't seem to do a good enough job of agitating especially when you get down to the last 1/4" or so of product (fert or grass seed for me, usually), tho sometimes even when you still have an inch or more left. I end up having to shake and bounce the whole thing every few steps to move the material closer to the holes manually. A pain! Also, the holes don't seem to open consistently for me...like one day on setting 5 they'll be open X amount, then on another day on setting 5 they'll be open a diff amount, or each of the three slots is open diff amounts even. Because of both of these problems combined I sometimes just open it up fully just to get it all flowing smoothly. Obviously not the right approach (esp with fertilizer) but I dont have time to fiddle with this every 10 feet over almost an acre :(
    Love the wheels and overall construction is great! Still beats Scotts IMO. If I can just figure out a better agitator (longer pin? Maybe a different shaped one?) I'll be much happier.
    Great content btw...thank you!

      JT, at times I share the same frustration with getting the final bit of product to the holes. Unfortunately, I think that is just the nature of the beast with this style of spreaders, without jumping to one of the high end commercial units.
      It's concerning that you're seeing inconsistent openings when using the same setting. (Setting 5 is very low on the 0-30 scale.) Is this the case at a higher setting as well?
      Each of the three openings should have a different gap by design to control the amount of material and where it falls on the carousel.
      I really appreciate you sharing your experience. Thank you!!

    same as the earthway. seems several companies have used this same unit placing their own brand on it

    • @BlackHoleDIY
      @BlackHoleDIY  4 роки тому

      Hi Chevy Vega. Though it is similar I dont belive it's the same as Earthway's. Several components may be, but where the Brinly has a fold down side deflector, for example, I think the Earthway has sliding mechanisms incorporated into the design that control the direction of the output. Nonetheless, I understand your point and agree with you.

    I'd probably just remove the wing nut/bolt there and put a rubber backed metal washer between the plate and spacer to keep from over tightening it all. I just hate fighting small things I can fix easy/cheap. The home stores sell small packages of rubber backed washers for a buck or so, they have numerous uses once you have them believe me you'll use them elsewhere. Of course I'd buy a metal wing nut too being such a cheap easy upgrade I'd do one or both thats for sure. Thanks

    • @BlackHoleDIY
      @BlackHoleDIY  3 роки тому

      Harry, this is an excellent suggestion and one I didn't think of! I know exactly which washers you are describing. I'm thinking it may take a couple stacked on top of each other to make up for the thickness of the lever so the lever stops at the washer(s) and does not come in contact with the wing nut. Again, great idea! Thank you!

    Update on their Gears!! Brinly & 3rd party sales sites advertise-
    Fully-enclosed gear box and stainless steel interior hardware, shaft, and agitator inhibits corrosion and provides long-lasting durability.
    Not the full story, before pulling the trigger on this unit I visited Brinly website and learned these have plastic gears like cheap units do. Some who didn't may feel hoodwinked, bamboozled and flimflammed man? Well' almost one of them at least..lol
    Brinly uses a very unfair play on words imho. Because if one don't actually visit Brinly and only reads the basic advertising details like most people just see when shopping it can give the idea their internals are SS but this only refers to the hardware only such as cotter pins, washers, screws etc..?
    Looking at full "specs" (only on Brinly site) it states "Plastic" for their Gear Material but' I never saw these detailed specs or plastic gears ever posted "anywhere" else for these spreaders. Deceitful advertising? You decide?
    Sorry' I'm out!! Hopefully it gives you folks many reliable yrs of use, I just have a lot of property so I need a better built unit and Earthway makes a better unit at the moment for the money. Peace

      I can confirm this, Harry. I just checked mine. You are correct, the gears are plastic (at least the larger gear tied to the axle, I couldn't easily see the smaller interfacing gear on the agitator shaft). I will say the gear seemed adequately lubed, although the grease is applied only to the gear itself, rather than a pool or glob of grease that some may expect at the bottom of the housing that the gear would sit in and be continously lubricated when rotating. I added more grease to the gear for good measure.
      Surprisingly, or not surprisingly, there was a small amount of water collected in the bottom of the gear box. Even knowing that the gear box is not sealed, and even trying to not spray water directly at it when rinsing off the unit, I'll still need to be a bit more careful and check it periodically. The good news is it is very easy to disassemble the gear box housing (6 screws) to look inside.
      Thanks for raising awareness on this topic, Harry. I'm still very happy with mine and hope to get many years of use out of it.

      @@BlackHoleDIY Did you happen to notice if the gears rode on bushings of some type, or were they just riding against the injection molded plastic of the gearbox housing? I think nylon gears themselves are fine, but on the low end scotts crap, it's the wear surface of the housings that the gears ride on that turn to dust and wear out.
      But on a positive note, it ~looks~ like the entire axle and gearbox assembly is a $24 replacement part, which seem pretty fair shop.brinly.com/39--1007119_p_3530.html

    • @BlackHoleDIY
      @BlackHoleDIY  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Frank. I don't recall seeing any bushings. The larger gear that is vertical in the gear box is fixed to the axle. This larger gear interfaces with a smaller horizontal gear at the top of the gear box which rotates the spindle having the carousel and agitator pin. There is plenty of clearance in the gear box housing so there is no chance of the gears coming in contact with the housing.
