  • In today's video I show you how to remove and replace a fuel filter on a 1999-2006 Chevy pick up truck. Make sure you depressurized the fuel system to avoid injury.     Very few mention the O-rings and doing a leak check. GOOD JOB Eric!!! I would only add to ALWAYS replace the O-rings. They are listed as "fuel line o-rings" and come in packs of 4, of which you'll only use the two bigger 3/8" O-rings.

      @@sauljose8783 Look up fuel line o-rings at any auto parts store. Don't use regular o-rings. Be sure they are made for use with fuel.

      It was still pliable, and it hasn't leaked since, but yes, that's why I said replace them in the video

    Couldn't be easier...
    I watched your "How To"...and was done in under 20 minutes start to finish!
    (I was able to use a standard 16mm and an adjustable wrench)
    As others have mentioned...thank you for pointing out the o-rings. 👍😁

    If someone has messed up the fittings with adjustable wrenches this becomes a vice grip job. Line wrenches or vice grip, your choice. I prefer to use a crow's foot that is made for line work. Great video.

    Hey man appreciate your time to do this video and the 2001 gmc fuel filter replacement as well. I was wondering if vehicle is starting right up and then other times vehicle having difficulties starting up from a decline street is fuel pump or fuel filter issue? If thats usually the tell taling sign of fuel pump? Then I gotta a lot of work to do tomorrow. Thanks again for the educational video.

    When I pulled my relay it died right away 😂. I think my filter was clogged. When I cracked the in line tons of pressure 😂😂😂 I was like gowd damn I’d say it’s time

    You should try the 4-mil black harbor freight gloves. Gas and oil wont melt as easy as thinner gloves you are using will.

      I personally just like using the diamond grip gloves they are cheaper compared to harbor freight and you get more but I see where your coming from just personally I like the ones I use

    I wouldn't recommend using an adjustable wrench for anything unless it was an emergency situation and that was all I had. Using the correct size wrench can save lots of unnecessary headaches

    Just something off topic. How's you HF air compressor running? Have you tried any painting with it? If yes, what gun? I'm in the market for a new compressor and I also have to do some painting. Thanks for the videos.

      I haven't used it much unfortunately but i keeps up with my Earthquake 1/2 impact. I have seen several videos on UA-cam of people painting with the harbor freight purple spray gun and it does a decent job.

    I’m think I’m starting to realize my 2004 4.3 Sierra does not have a fuel filter. I couldn’t find it and I looked it up online. Apparently my truck does not have a fuel filter?

    Why do you pull out the fuel filter relay before you start? And do you have to do that every time on every vehicle? Just trying to understand better thanks

      You remove the fuel pump relay while the vehicle is running because the fuel line is under pressure, removing the relay will stop the pump. The vehicle will use up the fuel in the line making it safe to disconnect.

      As the fuel filter becomes clogged the fuel pump has to work much harder. It is much cheaper to replace the filter proactively than the pump after it burns out.

    After your replace the filter you should see a performance difference right unless the pump went out??

      You will see a minor Improvement but the filter is just there to filter out the fuel as long as the pressure it's consistent at the fuel injectors you won't really notice a difference

    Tried as the video instructed, but for some reason I couldn’t get the lines to come off of the filter. Lines are very ridged and I couldn’t move the filter enough to slip the lines out. Didn’t want to break the line, so I ended up leaving the old filter on until I can try again. Any suggestions? Remove the bracket?

      You probably need to get longer adjustable wrenches it might be on tight

      @@ERICSDIYGARAGE I got the nuts to break loose with no problem, but after that, the lines don’t slip out of the filter easy. I tried pushing the filter to one side as I try to pull the line out from the other it doesn’t come out. I don’t want to use too much force because I don’t want to break the line. Didn’t know if you ran into that before.

      @@aj_raider5952 if you haven't unmounted the filter bracket go ahead and try that. It should come off with some force especially if you have pressure in the fuel line

      no you don't

      Best way is to remove the fuel pump relay fuse first than crank your engine up a few times to depressurize the fuel lines or fuel in the filter and remove the filter.

    There is no filter in this location on my 2005 Sierra 1500 SLT Crew Cab…fuel supply and return run all the way to the engine and tank with nothing in-line 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Why remove relay after starting instead of before starting

      the vehicle need the fuel to be pressurized before starting if you remove the replay its possible it will just crank doing it this way makes sure the that vehicle starts and the fuel is used up so that when you remove the filter it will have low pressure fuel coming out

      Or you can let it sit overnight and the pressure will naturally drain out and you can do it before starting it with very little fuel spills and no pressure. (There will still be fuel in the filter) That's the way I do mine. Very easy.

    you should change description this video is only good 99-2003 ..the 2004 and up fuel filter is in gas tank.

    Never run the pump dry. It will shorten the life or burn it out right then. Find the relief valve

      I never ran the pump dry, I removed the fuel pump fuse so it was not running and the engine was running on fuel in the fuel raid until it ran out

      It has a arrow showing the flow of fuel so it's going to the engine from the pump. It's really not that difficult if you can't figure it out take it to mechanic

      @@ERICSDIYGARAGE Thanks man. Don't mean to be a asshole. Just frustrated because of this bs. I have a 2007 Silverado newer model not classic and it's not there? Please tell me it's not on the top of the tank? I just replaced the fuel pump and now it turns off. So I was told to change the filter

      That's only needed if I was going to remove the fuel pump. This is a fuel line that has its own pressure regulated by the fuel regulator.
