Hey, I just wanted to say that I really appreciate your desert camping videos. They are a rare sight on UA-cam, where everyone seems to be obsessed with the woods. I grew up in the sunny and sandy regions of southern California and Nevada, and I have a special fondness for the desert and i think it's so peaceful and beautiful and underrated. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us. You are awesome my dude!
I love the desert here in Southern Nevada. I hiked probably thousands of miles thru it. More "survival" video in the.desert would be nice for sure. Camping I usually go to UT they have water....lol several times went moto camping and that was a blast, riding up some dirt road in a mountain until I find a spot I like and set camp !
There used to be a few channels that showcased desert camping/survival, they are long gone now. They never received all that much attention, because as you said, almost all vids are set in the woods. I too have spent alot of time in the desert, It's not for everyone, which is good in a way, it keeps stupid people alive by staying away. Being in a desert environment, takes more thought out preparation than most folks want to deal with. At least that's my opinion.
Hell yah James. Back to traditional foraging desert videos like u did back in the day when I first became a fan of u and ur channel. Digging the music in the beginning. Some beautiful landscape out there.
For the algorithm; This stuff is by far my favorite, this type of content is exactly why I came here 4(?) years ago… So glad you got your boots dirty, I can still live vicariously through you. Thank you.
I miss you doing these types of videos. They are my favorite by far. You are so good and knowledgeable about the west Texas area. Thanks for the video James. BTW: loved the music at the beginning!
What a great video! My wife and I road trip across the country often, taking the old route systems and tent camping. I grew up in Southern California and desert camping has always been a favorite for me. The stars are just awesome! One trip, we took Rte.180 west out of Fort Worth to Seminole, and Then Rte.62 to Hobbs NM. The desert is such a spectacular place! I love the desolation of it! Got the road trip bug again! Thanks, friend!👍 P.S. Like the fact that you give the song titles and artist along with the music!
My stomach can't handle a dehydrated meal in a bag because of the preservatives. You have some great videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences. I am going to subscribe.
To solve the problem of not having measuring cups in the wilderness, i poured different amounts of water in one cup increments in my metal cup and scribed a line where the water level was. Now i always have a way to measure water in the field. Just a thought. Great video man. I always look forward to these.
That was a great textbook flint and steel fire start! Nice!! That is my least practiced skill. Coming from the East Coast, Yuengling is one of my favorite beers. I'm so glad it has made it's way to west Texas!!
Love ur desert adventures James... going back to "your roots", the reason I started watching ur channel! Tell Quervo he missed out! But, also his tracks on this vid are awesome!
The Jemez in NM is opening back up after the long winter closure. Can’t wait to get out and get my boots dirty. Your adventures always put me in the spirit to get off grid and explore.
Oh, I know. The snow melt was crazy. I live down in Rio Rancho and have been worried that many of the back forest roads might be inaccessible from the flooding damage. Putting bug spray in the haversack now.
Nice Chanel and love your energy......blessed to you and enjoy the moment. Happyness starts inside you and not with extern factors like status, money, material things that means nothing and its relativ......life and living in the moment is what counts
I really apprecieate your videos on the Desert style bushcraft . I'm in Arizona . I know you know this but some may not . Mountian House freeze dried , like less than 10 mins cook time . I've been using them for 30 + years and they have a shelf life of 35 years . I found one of mine, 18 years old ...it was good and I didn't get kilt ( killed )
I also like to forage to add to the food I take with me! I'll have to remember to bring spices for ready hour meals 😅 thanks for making this video and I hope you had fun!
a good little spice kit makes a HUGE difference when living off the land. whether its to sprinkle on rations or sprinkling on a roasting critter. it does wonders for morale, plus adds nutrients and minerals. thanks for suggesting the food, i hope you enjoyed the video!
I am new to you. I Really Enjoy The Knowledge of Cactus...I Lived In Austin Texas I Know about the snakes And The Cactus But You Really Explained It If Ever your trapped in the dessert Cactus Great Water If You Have None Thank You For Showing How to Pull off cactus Pads
Hi James, love the videos. I would love to see a video at some point going over your “camp kitchen” seeing the pots, pans, grills, spices, etc. and how you pack them all for an overnighter like this (especially cooking for 2 with Cuervo)!
New junkyard fox video great end to my busy day!❤ Sunday when I head to Arizona gosh I can’t remember if I’ve ever seen any places that sell flint it’s been so long since I been out that way cause I just bought a flint n steel kit made in China of course ugh but a added way to start fire I figure. Cheers to you I’m drinking a simply spiked peach never had one and it’s so good!! Plus has real fruit juice so it’s healthy alcohol🤣🤓😝
Tipi tents are the way to go. I got a small Ozark Trail version from Walmart. Converted it to set up with one pole, seem sealed and put a coat of water repellent on it. Stood up to a decent storm in the mountains with minimal leakage at the door zipper where I didn’t fully close it. Not a backpacking tent by any means, but easy to set up and break down and the extreme slanted sides shed rain with little issue.
My pop's has some land out by Cattlemens. One of these days, I'm fixing to go out camping for a couple nights, over there to help hone my skills. Your videos have helped to prepare what I might need, and what to look out for. Thank you so much!
I was reading online. The best time to pick yucca fruit is early to mid fall. That's when they are ripe. Likely why they don't taste sweet for you. You're picking them too early.
that information is innacurate. the fruits are long gone by fall. they only last a few weeks because yucca moths burrow into them to lay eggs, then the birds and insects eat at them. i assume the sweet yucca species are only found in arizona, not texas(the people desecribing them as sweet are all in AZ)
We have a spot with some structures in north west az (the Aquarius mountains) 40 miles to the next stop light. On a creek you are invited any time. A lot like your area
Hi friend., Like your videos , great content . Be careful about putting your boots on without shaking them out first , could have critters in them like scorpions, spiders 🕷 or mice and snakes inside . Keep up the good work . Can you show us how to use the Rabbit Stick ? 😎👍
Love your vids! Ever tried cooking shin dagger ( lechugilla ) bases? The bulb part at the bottom that is attached to the ground of the shin dagger you can cook in the ground with coals takes a good full day to nutrilize the sapponins but pretty darn good... Almost like a sweet potato sugary taste. I think with foil you could bake them and it would be alot faster. Sotol is similar and much larger but I read it takes 72 hrs with primitive methods..
I will agree that it's not as easy to get the spines off of cactus pads, as it looks. Mind you, I haven't done it yet, though I lived in Houston for a while. The were available in the grocery stores there. I've gotten bit by the spines of prickly pear fruits before.
you can get power packs to recharge the phone. some ( good for 2 or three charges) are about the same size as a Bic lighter. Though for a little bit more size and weight (pack of cards) you can get one that can charge your phone several times. and slightly bigger one for more charges plus has a built in solar recharger for itself. those are the size of a paperback novel and can run a tablet or laptop, camp lights, a small fan and so on.
James👍👍 Nice over night camp, easy and relaxing just the way we like it. Weather looked great actually. Hahaha, that hat has seen better days. I'm not a fan of freeze dried/dehydrated pouched food either, it is truly "survival" food. Although I'm a New Mexico native and have tried wild foods, I avoid foraging in the desert, just not worth the pain...literally😉 Great video, well done, thanks for the trip. See ya next time.
Get a Nitecore 10000mah battery pack to keep the phone charged up. It's small and slim and I keep two charged up, one in my vehicle's AS bag and another in my go-bag at home.
We always process the nopalitos before cooking them, but to be honest, I've never tried that kind of cactus pad. I'm used to the ones that grew next to mom's house, where I grew up in SoCal.

Sometimes the best thing in life is getting out into the desert 🏜
This is the type of video I first started watching you for. Love the desert foraging stuff.
I love how you do so much by yourself. Thanks for always uploading.
It's a dream of mine to camp in the desert. Great video. I'm glad I found your channel!
Nice little outing, always great when there's no rain.
Thanks for sharing.

Yuengling (yingling) is one of my favorite beers, brewed in Pottsville, PA not far from home, Cheers!
Yuengling!? Ah, I'm jealous! I haven't had any since I left Pennsylvania and came back home in Arizona in 2005. Very good video!
Nice show and tell there and intro music JY 🦊 that crab 🦀 leg on your hat looked like it wanted to stick out the window too 😂👍👌✌️🫡🇺🇸
The drive away shot was a nice touch, altough i just imagined you getting out and running back to grab your phone lol. Great video
oh yeah lol but it was worth it! lol my inner steven spielberg was pleased
Thank you for sharing. Great entertainment. Impressive firestar you made it look easy. God bless you.

You were blessed you didnt need any accelerant on your fire. It just flamed right up for you.
here in the desert, all you gotta do is sneeze on a bush and it’ll catch fire lol
