- St. Michaels cathedral will become the acting cathedral church of the United Autocephalous Ukrainian church. Metropolitan of Kyiv and all Ukraine Epiphanios announced this after the liturgy earlier today. Hundreds of people came to the first church service of the newly christened Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

This was the correct thing to do. The Moscow Patriarchate is closely tied to the Russian government, but Ukraine is now an independent nation with it own identity. Romania, Georgia, Bulgaria, and Serbia have their own patriarchates for their nations, and Ukraine has more territory and more population than any of those, so why should it not be independent within the communion?
President Poroshenko, like other Ukrainian presidents, has backed the initiative realizing how politics has historically been dictated in the Moscow Patriarchate by Russian policies. It is painful to see how Russian media are politicizing the event and persons with insults against Patriarch Bartholomew as the leader of the Mother Church of Eastern Orthodoxy. Moscow has been attempting to present itself as a New Constantinople for centuries, even up to our time, but this is Spiritually Mistaken. Moscow should be a sister church among the family. Some media speak of dollars paid to Bartholomew to intervene in the muddy waters of Ukrainian Orthodoxy, a very low insinuation which shows how Politics are being manipulated.
I suppose the Patriarchy will be proclaimed later, in conformity with the rest of most national churches of such size and importance.

The Ukraine are schismatics that did this for political reasons. Maybe they are getting ready to join the failed EU. The E.P. in Constantinople is becoming too worldly and should not have interfered with the Patriarch of Moscow who historical has been the Patriarch of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. No doubt the E.P. of Constantinople was under pressure from the west for the Ukraine to break ties with Moscow. The schismatic church in Ukraine is behaving like the Whore of Babylon in the book of Revelation, the harlot church! They will be judged.

@@70AD-user45 ---- The Patriarch of Constantinople received the canonical power of court of appeal at the Council of Chalkedon in 451 AD. Many Ukrainians have been Appealing to them for years after Ukrainian independence, so finally Patriarch Bartholomew intervened to overcome the division and promote Peace among the faithful. Moscow claims the territory that was the former Russian Empire, but that no longer exists. Russian state and the patriarchy have a long history of being intertwined. If other Orthodox nations have their Patriarchs or Autocephaly, why should not Ukraine? It is not something for Moscow to grasp at. Many in Ukraine stay with the MP, so if others want an autocephalous Kyiv Patriarchy, let them go and respect them. There have been interferences of Antioch and Alexandria in the zone of Constantinople before, and that is lamentable. Polititicization is reprehensible. Let Moscow embrace the Brothers of Kyiv in humility and respect. Schismatic Was the group who asked to be recognized by the main see of the Byzantine world. Moscow has threatened Schism with the Patriarchy of Constantinople for reasons of power. Let him humble himself before Christ and not divide Eastern Orthodoxy.

You know something readers, no one has been able to explain nor have they posted that the Ukrainian church which has recently been formed and which they referred to as being schismatic isnt in fact schismatic because it has been received by a canonical church.

A local church can only grant Autocephaly to a Church which territory is under its own omophorion. Ukraine is a territory of the Moscow Patriarch, not the Turkish one. They are still heretics and schismatics, and forever will be unless they repent and join the true Ukranian Orthodox Church under Metropolite Onuphry.

@@davidspeers63 The Patriarch of Constantinople at that time had the entire Slavic Countries under his jurisdiction, they brought Christianity not only to Russia, but to Bulgaria, Serbia, Romania etc.
The thing is, today's Ukraine falls under the omophorion of the Ukranian Orthodox Church (the real one) and Bartholomew has no jurisdiction over there, that's why all this actions are anti canonical. No wonder all other Patriarchates are against this.

Also it's very silly of pope Cyrill to excommunicate Costantinople and Kiev for political reasons, he is now in communion only with himself and with Putin.
The Eritrean orthodox church split from the Ethiopian church and the Ethiopian church didn't accept that but it had never excommunicated the Eritrean church because they still holding the same faith.
In the end remember; Jesus promised only one church with one head and one faith, not more than 20 autocephalous church.
