The reason why a important number of Slavic nation's, distrust the Kremlin, it is because of problems like this. Back then, the Russians were key to safeguard the whole orthodox world, that was under Turkish muslim occupation. However, Russians' true intentions were most importantly to expand the Empire, at the expense of the "liberated" Christian orthodox peoples. When Moscow realized that this plan wasn't being successful, and once Panslavism appeared, Russia then took the banner of Panslavism to keep pushing the borders of the Empire. The coming of the Nationalist era put a brake at time to further Russians expansion. In the end, it is always the same... Russia was always looking for a new pretext, to keep the expansion of the Empire steadily. And that caused that the majority of the neighbors of Russia has no trust in them, even Lukashenko of Belarus (who keeps a stable relationship with Russia, because of the EU isolation on them, and the preservation of his personal regime). The Russian Church, after 1991, was now under strict manipulation from State agencies like the KGB, to help them to "cleanse" the face of the Russian state's own domestic and foreign agendas. In the end, processes like this are not to blame on NATOs nor Poroshenkos, but solely on Russia's shoulders, and their imperialist views on Eurasia.
