I mean anybody that is familiar with the Coast Guard knows this is self inflicted and embarrassing to itself. The Coast Guard has an Auxiliary of 30,000 volunteers. Many of those volunteers already conduct active duty jobs. They wear a military uniform, do a military job, go thru same qualifications as active duty for those positions, they work for free, many are older and some are fit and even more valuable and better shape than reservists - oh but they aren't considered 'military'. What a joke...
If the Coast Guard took 10% of Auxiliary and converted to active duty or reserve (some are already doing jobs with no pay because they like to volunteer), that could help with the shortage.
The problem is self-inflicted. Oh by the way - there is a law that allows the commandant to convert auxiliary to reserve or active duty. It was used during WW2. Just follow the law and this can be taken care of. Unfortunately, the department of homeland security is intentionally making the US less safe.
