Has anyone else experimented with the buffered bypass option on the Flashback Triple Delay. I would be very interested in hearing about your experience!
I love my TC Triple Delay. I changed the bypass before I even hooked it up ;-). I have an old version of the TC Alter Ego that I run in mono (to double the delay time) for the same purpose but your way is much, much easier. Thank you for sharing!
Bill, I just started messing with this and it sounds amazing. One thing I've noticed is that when I turn on delay 2 and 3 the drone gets a lot louder. I'm guessing I will need to turn the mix down for delay 2 and 3 to make it sound a bit more even.
Just received a Flashback Triple for a drone/ ambient project. I've been thinking out every possible fancy way to change drone smoothly in your "switch off drone mode" (for instance to another chord/ new drone), even tried manipulating time or feedback with an exp pedal with little success... I found out that the most effective way for me to do this is by using the delay type knob as "kill switch" (if you move it to another position it stops the delays, so a little tick on a nearby position an then again on the desired position is enough to reset) and it goes as follows: set up the drone, switch off to play over it, switch on - fade out with mix knob - on off with delay tipe knob, make new drone. If you have the pedal on a desk like me and you do it with one hand on the feedback knob and one hand on the mix knob it can be very fast and efficient. Hope it helps someone like me a few hours ago :)
Wow this was such a master class in ambient drone. Thanks for sharing your signal chain. That brief description of your compressor (squash dynamos, add a little sustain) has go me thinking about whether I need one!
dear bill, you have it all. your beautiful voice eloquently tells me what i need in less time than i have to spend. (i need the rest of my time to play lifelong lead lines over eternal drones.)
Bill, This is another great video and we all thank you for it. You inspired me to get back into guitar after 23 years. I didn't realize how accessible Frippertronics and ambient guitars have become! I have a Triple Delay and I'm running a Pigtronix Philosopher King into it as my compressor/sustainer/grit/envelope filter all-in-one (it's an interesting pedal). I had my triple delay set up with a serial seven-second unmodulated 2290 into Space into Tape for a few weeks before this came out. I was getting a great drone but couldn't figure out how to expand beyond that without a looper. This is helpful advice! Thanks for being a real experimentalist and teacher!
I just picked up a Triple Delay yesterday and love it! Also have the X4 and an EHX Canyon Delay ( shimmer, octave, s/h and reverb make it very creative) Using your settings and instructions I am very excited to get using the Triple Delay. Your sounds are just perfect for what I am looking for, and saves me about 6 months of tweaking! Thank you!
Continue and continue and con- tin- yoooo ! Bill that was something else ny friend and the drone effect was amazing - luv a duv duvved it Bill ! Thank yoooooo.....
I've been trying to get something similar going for gigs, either for transitions between songs or for more drone-based songs. This was really cool. Thanks for the tips 😊
hey man of all the videos out there, and there's a lot, you have the most consistent, best narrative, and best sounding videos out there, thank you so much, just stepped in from playing with 2 stacked delays on my new GT1 and I think that with your tips I can get to make the best out of it, thank you so much!! saludos desde Chile
Just brilliant. Thank you. I've been "inventing from scratch" and watching your work here is very inspiring. I just found a used triple delay and look forward to experimenting. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience, Bill!
This Is Awesome. Man I love listening to pink floyd and now that they are pretty much done making music this is the kind of stuff that i find closest to what they did at a time. I'm not sure if you have an album out but you need one out of not. This stuff gives me chills. Good luck man and keep making awesome music!
I don't use pedals normally, having an all digital home studio setup. This sound is what I have been searching for and couldn't quite replicate with delay plugins. It looks like I need a Holy Grail, this pedal, and an overdrive of some sort to run into my preamp. Maybe I'll check out that Sunset.
Thanks Bill.... didn't know about the "buffered bypass drone loop capability". I had a Triple, but sold it for a Timeline. In hindsight: what I liked about the Triple is it's simplicity: what you see is what you get. With the Timeline, I'm still experimenting with the vast-ness of the settings and so far, haven't used it in any of my pieces. I've found the Timeline, BigSky and Mobius are darn near a year's worth of experimenting with to get it under control!.... nice piece you did there, thanks......
Hey Bill - I remember when i first got my timeline. It was pretty daunting. But after a while the options start to make sense and it gets a lot easier!
Yes, thanks, I did experiment with the Timeline looper after watching Bill's demo mentioned below. It's a very cool looper, and I expect that I will use it in some of my pieces. I do have a Boss RC-300 (3 track) looper and also a Ditto X2 which is on the bench. I have the RC-300 after the volume pedal and before the effects, so it only loops the dry tones. Which is good, usually. I do like the ability of the Timeline looper to record the delayed/effected signal and loop that, then while it's playing the loop, I can change the delay engine for any new sounds I play. Pretty cool.
Very cool 8-) And it certainly is very inspirin'. I feel so inspired now that I'm gonna set up a drone and do some lead with my Radial Tonebone Plexitube Distortion when I get time. Keep up the good work!!
ambiguation I got close to this with an M13. The algorithm is a little more fickle in the Line 6. I ran 2 delays and a synth patch from my m13 into a line 6 verbzilla on the octo setting. I loved watching people's faces when the synth would run the "Moving in Stereo (The Cars)" filter sweep into the 2 delays and out to the shimmer effect.
Hi Bil,good stuff as always,Triple Delay it's a "Magic Machine" I have it since three years now and would not trade it with anything els ein the category,as I said it's "Magic" ;-)
Killer drones. Thanks for your amazing videos, I've just subscribed - I create ambient/drone music and have been searching far and wide for solutions to create looped textures (live). May try this Flashback triple (was thinking of the 2 originally). My problem is in a live set I only have 2 aux sends on my mixer so need to think strategically about how to split the FX and instruments, mainly for maximum control over drones/textures, dry and wet signals. If anyone else is doing something similar would love to hear what your setup is!
I love to compose ambient music, but i have never played any guitars before!. This is really inspiring and makes me wanna go and buy a guitar just so i can do this!.
Noting that you can set all the delays to double by turning the subdiv knob to one of the right most settings. Dotted eights plus sixteenths etc. You could technically add six delays altogether.
I think you said somewhere that you cannot use the tap tempo to set the tempo for all delays. You can if they are all on. Hope that helps! I bought triple and it’s just amazing so thanks!!
Pretty cool idea and delay! I sort of have the same experience but not with the Flashback Triple Delay, but with the strymon Bigsky. There's a factory setting that when you pluck the note, it stays on for infinity. :)
Take a look at this link on Strymon's site. It is a recent blog post that David Helpling provided. Great combination for Timeline and Bigsky together: www.strymon.net/this-weeks-preset-timeline-bigsky-waiting-for-the-wind-from-david-helpling/
Glad you liked the video! Unfortunately, the Flashback 2 X4 can only play one delay at a time. So while you could create a delay with a very long decay time for the drone, you would need another pedal for a shorter delays.
Hey Bill. Thank you so much for youre videos. Ive been a fan for a long time now. If its not too much, could you please write the settings for each delay? Time, repeat, mix and subdiv? I know you mention most of them in the video, but i just cant get the drone sound and i got TC elec to check that i am in buffered mode. Again thank you so much. Søren
You purchased yet another P-90 equipped PRS Baritone! I am guessing this is becoming your favorite format for Ambient Guitar. Do those P-90s produce hum, because I really don't hear it in your playing? Loving the drone.
I do indeed love the PRS SE-277, especially the semi-hollow version. And yes, the P-90s are very noisy unless you have the pickup selector set in the middle. Fortunately, I really like that tone. I am thinking about trying noiseless P-90s in one of them to see how they sound.
I like the Earthy green color of this guitar. Just curious if you play most your P-90 equipped guitars in the neck and bridge position? Also... I haven't seen you play any standard scale guitars with P-90s; do you recommend those as well or do you feel they only have value in Baritone scale guitars for ambient styles. Lastly, do you feel pure mahogany guitars like Gibson's Firebird and SG lend themselves to Ambient styles... I don't see these 2 that often. I really enjoy your channel; best wishes.
Bill. Will you do a video demonstrating how to go into the back of the pedal to put it into buffered bypass. Its crazy that the dip switch is actually inside of the pedal requiring you to take it apart to access it.
George Johnson yep, the same happens with the Alter Ego X4, there's 7 screws to deal with! I turned on the buffered bypass and I'm afraid I won't turn it off so soon... haha
Anderson Ziemmer It's a pain to unscrew too. After realizing typical allen wrenches wouldn't work I found out I has to use a special electronic tool. It would have been nice for TC to include that information in the manual.
So have you given us a tutorial on changing the true bypass to buffered bypass in the tc electronics triple flashback delay? I have one.... and need to know how to switch it over. Is there a certain switch just for the #1 switch and not the others? Thanks
Ok that IS interesting! You posted this 2 years ago! I wonder if you still like this Triple Delay as much as you did back then? Im looking into getting my self some interesting delays but this one having the looping option really gets my full attention and seeing you drool over it I kinda wanna have one too :D Thanks as per usual!
Hello Sir, sit here with my triple dealy in front of me with the paln to open up the back to change the knob to buffered bypass, but with what kind of screwd river and what size of it is it possible to open up the back of the pedal? A desperate fan:((
Always love your videos, unique style......in your opinion, so you recommend that little alligator volume pedal? I’ve been looking at ma y but have not found one I like. It looks nice and compact? Any issues with it so far? Thanks......keep it coming.....👍
I have yet to see any oscillation demonstration done with the TC Triple Delay. I would hope running in series, would boast some cool chaos. As I would want to add that into a shimmer effect. I.E. Angelic chaos
Finally found a Triple Delay second-hand. I'd like to try this Buffered Bypass, but can't seem to get a grip on those screws! What sort of screwdriver or Allen wrench or whatever do I need to remove the backplate?
I don't have a problem with the lack of patches, but I can see how it could be a limitation for a live player who likes to do a lot of settings switching during a show.
Hi Bill, Let’s say someone wants to get the same effect (in series) with a few delay pedals they have or may get, have you tried stacking delay pedals and if so, would you say it’s preferable to have digital first and analog second in the chain, or the other way around? Thanks, James
Hi Bill ... kind of a question here that might put you on the spot, and ultimately the decision is mine, but I'm trying to decide where to get the best bang for my buck. For versatility, would you recommend the TC Triple Flashback in use as you demonstrate here or several delays (that I already have ) and the Gamechanger Plus? Thanks
Is your sole focus getting a low drone tone per the video? Perhaps you can achieve that with one of the delays that you already own. Assuming not, and if you feel like you already have enough delays, the Gamechanger is worth considering for different types of droning effects.
@@chordsoforion It's the ability to stack the drone tone and create a drone chord, like you demonstrate here at 8:55, that has had me looking at the Gamechanger. This is the only other time I've seen another effect unit that can do this so I had to ask the question because the Triple Delay has so much else that the Gamechanger doesn't. The prices are so similar that cost doesn't play into it for me, just the overall capability.
If you want to change you drone note, can you use an expression pedal to flush it somehow, for instance nixing the infinite repeats? I'm doing something like that on the H9. PS that triple delay sounds gorgeous.
Hmm. I don't think that an expression pedal will allow you to specifically change the pitch. You would do things more like change the delay time, repeats, etc.
Not sure whether it's possible to route this on this single box but if you could take the output of reverb 1 to a Quintessence you could polyphonically modulate the drone without cancelling it.
Great video as always Bill!! I really want an experimental digital delay, i already have a memory boy deluxe, and i'm torn between triple delay and memory man with hazarai!! Do you have any experience with the hazarai pedal? I also like avalanche run but here in europe they go way expensive!! What's your opinion?
I don't have any experience with the Hazarai, but in general, I prefer the sound of TCE delays over EHX. I can say this - If I had to choose between the Triple Delay and the Avalanche Run, the Triple Delay would win for sure.
I'm a gonna do it right now.... Will report back!
Not got a TC Triple, but I'm going to set up a patch to achieve something similar with my DD-500!
Very interesting Bill! Could you do something similar with the Ocean Machine? Would love to see that. Cheers from Portugal.
Bill, I just started messing with this and it sounds amazing. One thing I've noticed is that when I turn on delay 2 and 3 the drone gets a lot louder. I'm guessing I will need to turn the mix down for delay 2 and 3 to make it sound a bit more even.

This guy is Totally the Bob Ross of guitar pedals LOL
Robby Suter I literally thought the same thing!
me too
Just gunna throw a happy little B right here...maybe his little buddy F# sitting under it, but you can play what ever notes you want.....
😂
100%
8:25 “ohhhhohohoh yeah!”
Same feeling I had brother
You are the opposite of a shred guitarist. I heard tell that you once played an entire gig with just two plucked notes. I salute you sir. Well done.

You my man are a legend. Merry Christmas 🌹
Wow this was such a master class in ambient drone. Thanks for sharing your signal chain. That brief description of your compressor (squash dynamos, add a little sustain) has go me thinking about whether I need one!
That is an awesome drone! It’s got Explosions in the Sky or This Will Destroy You type of vibes!
dear bill, you have it all. your beautiful voice eloquently tells me what i need in less time than i have to spend. (i need the rest of my time to play lifelong lead lines over eternal drones.)
bought a Little Alligator today. There was no second choice after watching your vids... Thanks for the inspiration!
Sweet! I am sure you will love it as much as I love mine!
Bill,

39 years for me ! Bill does a great job with his tutorials for certain.
15 years for me and I like this style a lot.
This is fantastic teaching. You are a true master at this genre!
Thanks very much!
You always manage to keep it simple but beautiful. Thanks a lot for sharing your enthusiasm and inspiration, Bill!
This is what I love about Bill's videos - everything he shows is something anyone can recreate.
I just picked up a Triple Delay yesterday and love it! Also have the X4 and an EHX Canyon Delay ( shimmer, octave, s/h and reverb make it very creative)
Using your settings and instructions I am very excited to get using the Triple Delay. Your sounds are just perfect for what I am looking for, and saves me about 6 months of tweaking!
Thank you!
Can the flashback x4 also keep its delay going when the footswitch is off in buffered bypass mode?
Love your vids- you have the perfect voice for guided meditation. Thanks
Thanks very much for the kind words!!
Thanks for the tips 😊
this pedal works great for a satch type delay tone since he stacks his delays as well!
hey man of all the videos out there, and there's a lot, you have the most consistent, best narrative, and best sounding videos out there, thank you so much, just stepped in from playing with 2 stacked delays on my new GT1 and I think that with your tips I can get to make the best out of it, thank you so much!! saludos desde Chile
This is fun...This is the delay I have been looking for. thank you Bill.
Glad you found your delay! :-) and thanks!
Just brilliant. Thank you. I've been "inventing from scratch" and watching your work here is very inspiring. I just found a used triple delay and look forward to experimenting. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience, Bill!
So glad you found a used Triple Delay and thanks!!!!
Ive watched this vidja quite a few time now. I have the TC TD just for this. I additon its perfect for a cover band. No tweaking.
Very inspirational Bill! Really dig your gig my friend!
Excellent video! I’m going to have to get a triple delay now
I have spent a fortune because of this series of vids lol
I played the low B and wondered why it wasn't as low as yours, then remembered 'baritone' so added my sub'n'up into the chain......fixed it ;-)
This
Is
Awesome.

Thx Bill
Very usefull tips and tricks. Many thanks!
Great job on the vids, Bill. I stop by periodically then end up binging:)
Thanks!!
Thank you, I love your channel and your sound
that drone with ebow-lead is awesome.... very ethereal
great tips. cool shoes.
great! i do love it. i do ge it!
absolutely wonderful!
Thanks!

Hey Bill - I remember when i first got my timeline. It was pretty daunting. But after a while the options start to make sense and it gets a lot easier!
Every day I tell myself, "just keep kicking down the doors!" Thanks for the encouragement......
The TimeLine has a looper built in. You could set the drone to that. It won't decay, but at least you would have a drone going.
Yep - and just in case you didn't see this recent demo: ua-cam.com/video/ZZNukHx6vL0/v-deo.html
Cool! BTW, Love the Plexitube. I have a Classic Tonebone with a vintage tube in it. Sounds pretty cool too!
Very interesting can’t wait to try something like this myself. Would work well with a looper as well to add some crystalline arps.
yes indeed!
This was amazing
Thanks!
I love your outlook and ways to make sounds so much man ! Good stuff !
Thanks very much!!
Wonderful!
Love this!! I can get something similar with an M9. Must play some more with this!!

Great video.
Thanks very much!!
thanks for sharing the knowledge.i am on board from now on!
Your videos are EXCELLENT.
Man, your voice is mezmerizing.
really ispiring, I'm experimenting ;-D thank you
love this. inspiring!!
Thanks so much!!!
Love your videos.
Thank you!
The kind of the videos that you see by mistake and you instantly subscribe..
Thanks very much for subscribing!
Hi Bil,good stuff as always,Triple Delay it's a "Magic Machine" I have it since three years now and would not trade it with anything els ein the category,as I said it's "Magic" ;-)
I totally agree - Magic!!
Bill did you ever tried the Digitech Trio Band Creator+? It's an amzing device to play with ;-)
I love your stuff
Killer drones. Thanks for your amazing videos, I've just subscribed - I create ambient/drone music and have been searching far and wide for solutions to create looped textures (live). I LOVE this vídeo. I think it's going to make buy this delay pedal. That drone is amazing. I wonder if the drone can be even more modifiable
Yes - you could change the drone by using a different delay type, etc.
Very nice 😎👍
I love to compose ambient music, but i have never played any guitars before!. This is really inspiring and makes me wanna go and buy a guitar just so i can do this!.
I'm into samplers, synths and drum machines. Just because you don't play guitar, doesn't mean you can't use pedals.
Noting that you can set all the delays to double by turning the subdiv knob to one of the right most settings. Dotted eights plus sixteenths etc. You could technically add six delays altogether.
awesome!
You are the man! Just amazing :)
I think you said somewhere that you cannot use the tap tempo to set the tempo for all delays. You can if they are all on. Hope that helps! I bought triple and it’s just amazing so thanks!!
Bill your one funny guy good sounds by the way and i love my baritone to
Id like to be like you un dime aspectos,
Thanks mate
Pretty cool idea and delay! I sort of have the same experience but not with the Flashback Triple Delay, but with the strymon Bigsky. There's a factory setting that when you pluck the note, it stays on for infinity. :)
Nice! I actually have a Big Sky on the way, and will be sure to check it out!
Oh... I can't wait for those videos...
Oh cool! The setting is call For Days and it's in bank 10.
You will love that pedal. So many features and fun things you could do.
Take a look at this link on Strymon's site. It is a recent blog post that David Helpling provided. Great combination for Timeline and Bigsky together: www.strymon.net/this-weeks-preset-timeline-bigsky-waiting-for-the-wind-from-david-helpling/
Bill. As always another great video. Just found your channel and really enjoying your vids.. been noticing these units on reverb going for
Glad you liked the video! Unfortunately, the Flashback 2 X4 can only play one delay at a time. So while you could create a delay with a very long decay time for the drone, you would need another pedal for a shorter delays.
Eggzellent!
Nobody mentioned them shoes? Can we get a shoe demo?
:-) Vivobarefoot rocks!
This is awesome!
Hey Bill. Thank you so much for youre videos. Ive been a fan for a long time now. If its not too much, could you please write the settings for each delay? Time, repeat, mix and subdiv? Pedals are great because you can also use them with synthesizers besides guitars. I play guitar and keyboards.
Agreed!
Definitely some ‘Bladerunner’ sounds going on there
You purchased yet another P-90 equipped PRS Baritone! I am guessing this is becoming your favorite format for Ambient Guitar. Do those P-90s produce hum, because I really don't hear it in your playing? Loving the drone.

It's a pain to unscrew too. After realizing typical allen wrenches wouldn't work I found out I has to use a special electronic tool.
It would have been nice for TC to include that information in the manual.
So good, love your vids :-)
Thanks for letting me know!
So have you given us a tutorial on changing the true bypass to buffered bypass in the tc electronics triple flashback delay? I have one.... and need to know how to switch it over. Is there a certain switch just for the #1 switch and not the others? Thanks
Just download the manual from the TC site - it describes how to set.
I need this delay
I need this PRS 277 baritone
Im amazed. Your a god
Oh yes, I still love my Triple Delay!
ooooh my god that was cool
lad, great stuff!
Thanks!

I HIGHLY recommend the Little Alligator. I've had mine for more than 10 years, and it is rock solid and sounds great!
Can you please do a video of the tc electronic x4 delay pedal. Thanks
That drone goes on for ever but how do you turn it off or stop it?
That is a limitation of this technique. You will need to turn down the feedback/repeats.
Do you need this if you have the GT1000? Is it that much better? Thanks. Great channel
Can you recreate this on the GT1000?
I have yet to see any oscillation demonstration done with the TC Triple Delay. I would hope running in series, would boast some cool chaos. As I would want to add that into a shimmer effect. I.E. Angelic chaos
Beautiful sounds¡ What are the settings on the 2290 mod?
Glad you like it! The settings are in the video at 4:44 or so. There are no other settings beside time, repeats and level.
Chords Of Orion thanks! Is it possible to recreate those sounds with an álter ego?
Finally found a Triple Delay second-hand. I'd like to try this Buffered Bypass, but can't seem to get a grip on those screws! What sort of screwdriver or Allen wrench or whatever do I need to remove the backplate?
Yeah - it's a pain. Torx T10 is the one to use.
@@chordsoforion Thanks, Bill.
Oh boy, that little switch looks so flimsy I'm afraid to touch it . . . Did you ever change back to true bypass?
Even your voice has Ambience
Very intriguing pedal. Do you find it limiting that there is no ability to store patches Bill?
I don't have a problem with the lack of patches, but I can see how it could be a limitation for a live player who likes to do a lot of settings switching during a show.
Hi Bill,
Let’s say someone wants to get the same effect (in series) with a few delay pedals they have or may get, have you tried stacking delay pedals and if so, would you say it’s preferable to have digital first and analog second in the chain, or the other way around?
Thanks,
James
Hi Bill ... kind of a question here that might put you on the spot, and ultimately the decision is mine, but I'm trying to decide where to get the best bang for my buck.
Enjoyed. Do you play gigs Bill? Thanks.
I don't play out at this point in time. Perhaps in the future.
That's what I mean. Use an expression pedal to turn the repeats down, which will fade out your first drone, and you can start a new one.
Not sure whether it's possible to route this on this single box but if you could take the output of reverb 1 to a Quintessence you could polyphonically modulate the drone without cancelling it.
You can definitely do this with the ocean machine. Idk about the triple delay
Thank you for answering Bill!!! Greetings from Greece!!! :)
