Mooer Ocean Machine = Ambient Guitar Drone Machine!

- Learn how to turn the Mooer Ocean Machine into an into an Ambient Guitar Drone Machine by using its built-in reverb, 2 delays and looper to create a soothing ambient bass line, and still have spacious ambient delays available for chords and lead lines. This machine was built for ambient guitar!
The key to the patch I use in the video is to have a reverse reverb BEFORE the 2 parallel delays lines. This allows the reverb to create a swirling smoky sound that works really well as an ambient drone.

Have you used the Mooer Ocean machine as a drone machine? Comment below and share your experience!
Chords Of Orion I was curious about the pedal and have since ordered one after watching your videos using it! Keep up the amazing content man!
Yes I got one recently too, so many presets, for drones I use a hmx superego which I feed into the ocean machine, as well as Itabla which plays through my studio monitors...
Just won one on eBay. fabulous. Looking forward to getting creative .
not a guitarist, but using the Ocean Machine with synths, such as Yamaha TNRW Tenori-On, Novation Bass Station 2 or Alesis Micron. for now experimenting also with midi to automate the recordings.
If u run it into itself mono into mono and loop it u can get some nice dark textures.
I was just watching Rob Chapman’s review of this pedal and thought “this is not the right reviewer. I wish Chords of Orion did a review.” I left that video and yours was the next hit! Thank you for showing how to use this pedal for its intended purpose. Devin would be proud.
Few days ago I bought Ocean Machine and I was overwhelmed by the amount of possibilities. The first thing I wanted to achieve was the effect you showed. Thank you! You probably saved me a lot of time.
wow....just came back to this video after a few months and tried it again with much better results, this machine is friggin' excellent and has many miles of pleasure in it....thanks for the tutorial Bill.
Devin gave you a shoutout on Twitter. Now I completely understand why.
Also, your voice recording is very pleasant. Easy to listen to even on phone speakers. Didn't try headphones yet, so don't know if it's tiring or not. In any case, well done.
Thanks for letting me know about the Twitter thing! And glad you like the voiceover!
@@chordsoforion Whats your mike set-up for the voice recording please?
Great player great speaker great Tech wizard
Thanks! I use this a lot with my Ocean Machine. I also found if i go to half speed it gives a very deep bassy drone. I'm still learning this pedal system. It is so rich! Thanks for all you do!
Great tip!!!
I've had my Ocean Machine for a few weeks and today decided to get to know it a little better with some serious use, I used this lesson for this serious use, although I had to watch another lesson on this pedal to find out how to put the pedals in a different sequence and now I am absolutely hooked.....love love this pedal!.....thanks Bill, getting some fantastic droning going on, well better than listening to the wife droning on anyway ha ha
Now that was a real eye opener for me! Thank you so much for your work Sir!
Love my Mooer Ocean Machine.
Wow definitely want! Beautiful reverb and delays!
This is really great , I own a Ocean Machine as well and find this video really helpful
Even though I'm more into heavy music I must admit that ambiant stuff are really nice to hear, You voice is so peaceful and really fits the ambiant genre of the video
Thanks very much!
This is the most helpful ambient demo I've ever seen. :-)
Just pulled the trigger to buy one of these because of your videos. So many videos on this pedal are by people who have no clue as to how to use it! Thanks...
Hi Bill. I love your videos - thanks so much for taking the time! I just purchased a Mooer Ocean Machine and I'm finding your videos are awesome to lower the learning curve. Keep up the good work. I've subscribed to your page.
Thanks very much!!
I truly love your work and I just bought this pedal!!!
The dark drone you had would be perfect for a mysterious movie scene in the woods or similar. Great vid, as usual!
Works great with synths too ive been using it with a moog grandmother and a make noise o coast and the textures it can create are insane also a real powerhouse for the price i paid for it.
Sounds amazing man ! That PRS baritone is amazing
Beautiful!
I love your videos! Thanks as always!
Those flying birds on the fret board ... wow :) Nice drone, btw
Cool Video. Thanks amigo.
Thank You! Love Your Work.
You confirmed my purchase.
It is a great pedal. Hope you get a lot of great sounds from it!
Wow, you showcased the possibilities of this pedal WAAAYYY better than Chappers did, honestly. Great job.
Thanks very much!!
The chappers clown around too much!
AsTheSeasonsGray chappers never showcases the possibilitirs of anything really
I can't stand to listen to the Chappers....they think they are sooo funny.....pathetic!
neil groves same here mate. Can’t stand their tests of anything.
Here it is nicely done
Bob Ross of ambient, really enjoyed your playing, plus one subscriber
Thanks!!
Thank you for inspiring 😌
That is just an absolutely lovely way to setting this up, thank you for the idea :)
And funnily enough, this gave off quite the Devin Townsend vibes, especially if you think of his work on Casualties of Cool.
Guess that is kind of natural though. After all, the man does love himself some ambience.
Excellent video. Love the bari! I've got a couple of electric baris and one acoustic. (I even play the baritone horn. LOL) The Ocean Machine is impressive, especially at the price. Thank you for the great demo!
You are welcome!
Thank you.... subscribed.
underated maschine!
Great video
love this channel - you're like the Bob Ross of guitar! hehe
Also... "One of the coolest features is the FREEZE option (when in Play mode). You can hold down the Reverb or either Delay footswitch and that effect (e.g., plate reverb, tape echo, etc.) will continue to sustain until releasing the footswitch."
a freezing effect, so to speak like the Electro Harmonix Freeze pedal?
I’ve got one.
I can get lost for ages experimenting with it.
Great practise tool
Got some devy stuff goin on. I need one!
very well explained and every word is very easy to understand for me as a german... 🙃👌🏻
Great videos, great music! I've been checking your gear reviews for a while, and today was looking for demos of Yamaha's DG Stomp since I got one, realised you use it on some sounds. Keep at it!
Glad to hear you got a DG-Stomp. How are you liking it?
Still waiting for it to arrive, but from the sound it seems like in a different league from my old pod xt. Looking forward to stack reverbs with it!
Love your channel
Thanks!
Thanks been wanting one of these thanks to Devin Townsend
Great review, I love your channel!
Thanks very much!
I haven't been playing for about 20 years, and your videos are making me want to play guitar again. Would you make a guide about using software guitar effect for making ambient music? Things like Guitar Rig 5 Player, which is free and includes two delay units and a reverb. Would a solution like this help in reducing the entry barrier for playing this kind of music?
New subscriber here! Love this video. Hopefully can afford one of these sometime soon.
Lots of these ♥️♥️♥️
Ended up buying the pedal based on your videos. Such a beautiful pedal.
Thanks for the video and detailed info for making these drone sounds. I'm not a guitar player but into synths but pretty sure I could achieve similar drones with my Mooer Ocean Machine :-))
a synth and an ocean machine = great combination for sure!!
Rik Vanhoenacker zexo
Thanks friend, for your videos I bought THE OCEAN MACHINE, from Aliexpress, I am looking forward to it, I thank you.
Nice!!!
Great vid Bill! Made me bought that lol !Just got my OM a month ago... a bit complicated To operate but very powerfull...lack of headphone plugs and the on/off switch...but i Will dig that pedal like forever !
I use the OM with my moog subsequent 37 synth and with various other synths such a beautiful pedal , this cool lil hack to overdub is great, also sounds damn good with my guitar.
Glad you found it useful!
Chords Of Orion thx really like ur vids , and love the ambient sounds u make , peace from Australia
Matthew Cody hey Matthew, do you recomend the sub 37 over prophet rev2 for ambient ?
realxing and at the same time educational.... you should REALLY do a masterclass on FX creation
Great tip to record a silent loop then overdub over that to create a smooth drone with no "edges"
Glad you found it useful!
instant sub, great video :)
Thanks!
I have just been playing around with combining the spacestation effect from my digitech ex-7 (that I picked up for $100AU.. steal) and the ocean machine through my Bogner Alchemist 2x12. I'm convinced both of these pedals fell from the sky and combining them is going to open a portal to where they came from 😂 all seriousness, great video, that tip with the silent loop is a game changer!
I'm another happy owner of an Expression Factory. I pair it with an EHX B9 for the Leslie emulation. Also experimented with the Spacestation sound. What an amazing pedal
@@xebio6 I borrowed an EX-7 from a friend and was shocked at how good it is. If only it had presets...
That is going on to my wish list. Def not an inexpensive pedal!
Your video inspired me to pick up this pedal for a Godin MultiOud we use in our live rig for Rain In Eden. It takes the oud tones and gives them the ambient space we need for dreamier pieces. But I didn't expect more from it than being a simple live device. But I am primarily a synth player/composer and I have the usual Strymon, TC Electronic heavy hitters in my studio rig but hate dragging them to gigs because they are at risk. So I tried the Ocean Machine and it is a great stand in for most work. But also does a decent job of ambient work.
I don't think this replaces Empress, Strymon or GFI for reverb for complex ambient electronic music. It can't go into areas those pedals can at the granularity of control they offer. But if you don't have the cash for those, then this is a great way to get 70-80% of the way there at 1/2 the cost of an Empress reverb. So highly recommend it for getting started or as a piece of road gear.
If it wasn't mooer and some boutique seller you'd be saying something completely different.
I really think you should do a lesson on how to create the melody to go over the top of the drone....sounds great.
I love your shoe, man
I am a big fan of Vivobarefoot and Vibram Fivefingers. They changed my life!
Thanks, interesting as most people dont use this pedal for what it is intended in demos.
3:19 the JBL bluetooth speaker pairing sound lol
Very good demo, Bill, thanks! I don't own the Mooer, (probably will some day, based on my track record,) but the concepts you present here are valuable with my own pedal set. I have a reverse reverb on my BigSky (Nonlinear engine, then secondary function Shape=Reverse.) Plus: I have never placed the reverb before the delays; it's always last. So I'll have to re-jigger some cables to do that. All in, that is a killer drone that I'd like to get into my repertoire!...thanks again.....
Sounds like a good strategy to get sounds off in this direction! Let's do you happen to have the Flashback Triple Delay (can't remember)? I've got the OM delays set up in parallel - not series. The Triple Delay can do that (as well as some others).
Used to have the Triple, but sold it and got the Timeline (which I'm still struggling with). I noticed you had the delays in parallel. When I had the Triple, I always used the series mode; parallel always sounded strange to me. Just goes to show that these pedals have lots of hidden crannies in them.
Love this video. After three years, do you still love this pedal?
Exelent...
Thanks!
I've seen a lot of your videos, great sound and playing man ;) do you think this pedal is good for acoustic guitars?
Can you do a lesson showing how you get those sweet melodies note for note please Billl?
I thought about putting one drone on top of the first drone, then maybe a lead line on top of that, would that work and maybe you could do a lesson on multiple drones and lead lines?
Hi Bill, I'm late to the show but have really enjoyed your videos of late. I've just bought the Ocean Machine which I'm using with a volume pedal and a Caline Pure Sky overdrive pedal running into Reason 6.5 DAW. For this video aside from the time settings for the delay are all the other settings more or less set to 12 o'clock? I'd like to make a similar drone with heavier elements to it.
I think the Ocean Machine is a great first buy for anyone wanting to get into ambient guitar but the presets are uninspiring IMHO. Digging in to the pedal settings - especially changing the signal chain - can produce some huge tones for soundscapes. On occasions I've played four or five notes on the guitar and just sat back and enjoyed the looper showcasing the complexity of the delays and ethereal reverbs.
What else would you expect from Devin, the single most brilliant musician in the world today.
That’s a stretch
Hi, Bill! I'm new to your channel. Are you using a standard tuning or are on the Devin way of open C I'm really digging your content, by-the-way.
Glad you are enjoying the vids! When I play baritone (as in this video), I normally tune to BEADF#B. I refer to it as "baritone standard".
Has anyone ever used this for live performances and does it sound good and is it easy to use in between songs?
Hey Bill....i am still working on this lesson, do you have a lesson where you show what you are playing over the top of the drone?....this sounds really nice.
have u demoed the Avalanche Run yet? how does it and the big sky compare with the mooer ocean machine in your opinion
Hey Bill....can you show how to create a drone in the key of A so it sounds good when soloing over it in the key of A?
Any recommendations for stereo volume pedals? I have been looking for compact versions.
How does Ser Davos Seaworth play guitar with no fingers on one hand.......?
Sachin Gasper its called Legato...
*Sir
Hi Bill! I have question! After 3 years do you still think it sounds good? Especially reverb algorithms. I use it with saxophone but not pleased with it much. So considering many firmware issues that will never be fixed I think about something better sounding. Does Collider sounds much better? I need fat reverb pads.
You mention that you have an amp modeling unit in your chain. Which modeler do you use?
way ünlemeydanabi abim.
It would be nice, if you use a violin bow/ebow to create drones using this effect.
Yes, that would work well too! I my EBow a lot here on the channel for drones and such...
How do you sound the reverb on Ocean Machines? I was disappointed with the reverb. It is not bright, dull and lacks volume.
But the delays are not bad. Worst of all, the pedals keep dropping sound while playing. You have to reboot it. It is completely unsuitable for concert performances. In the Mooer service, they just threw up their hands.
Mooer ocean machine vs Strymon Dig Dual Delay?.. Wich is better for play ambient guitar?
I can hear Deftones in the main drone... Sorry Im afflicted....sounds great- gotta have it soon.
I've recently been considering this pedal for myself. I really appreciated your videos on it and was curious.... Do you still use it as part of your main rig or is it just something you use when the mood strikes? I'm seeing this video and Devins video on "That Pedal Show" and am wondering if its just TOO complex of a pedal for daily use. Thanks.
It's really pretty easy to a patch together after you become acclimated. And keep in mind that you don't have to use all the features all the time. If you just want a single delay, then just use a single delay. I don't use it very often these days, as I cycle through a lot of different gear for this channel.
Decided to get an ocean machine. Won it on eBay for £142., fabuhlous
So if I understood what you did you hit the record button first then played whatever you wanted and then turned it off to capture everything you played?
If this pedal wasn't so huge I would for sure get it sigh gotta look for a more compact option
I'm a little confused as to what is actually going on here Bill.....I have my delays set up as you do and when I play my note/chord without using my swell pedal the sound is broken up by the delay settings as I would expect, however when I bring the swell pedal into the mix, the sound is no longer individual notes, they are blurred into a 'tone' which is exactly what I am looking for and sounds great, can you explain what is going on here in technical terms though?.... how can an individual note be drawn out into a long tone since the swell pedal is essentially just a volume pedal?
Need help connecting the machine to Amp and guitar, I must be doing something wrong cuz I'm getting no sound from The amp
You should check out the mooer ge200.
Maybe I will!
Very Inspirin' Bill! Keep it up! And have ya seen my latest post? I did two videos and put 'em in one. I did a rhythm part on my 12 string acoustic and a lead on my Clapton Strat. Ever thought of tryin' that concept before? Give it a try sometime where ya play some acoustic guitar in one video and electric guitar in another and as long as they sound good together put the two videos in one.
Hey lighnin'! I've never done an acoustic + electric vid, but certainly many audio recordings with layered guitar tracks. The closest thing here on the channel was one video where I shot myself playing 4 lead parts and put them all together in a single vid.
Is there a way to get reverse delay out of this thing?
I own one of the Ocean Machines and I love it, but I have a question. Do you find the tone and options better in front of your amp or in the fx loop? And are you running it at the end of your signal chain or the front? Thanks and great vid.
Glad you like the video! I always run my delays and reverbs in the effects loop of my amp modeler (Avid Eleven Rack). The loop starts with my volume pedal, then generally goes to delays and last to the reverbs. This can vary somewhat depending on the sound I am looking for. Hope this helps!!
Chords Of Orion thanks for the quick response. I typically run modulation effects through the fx loop, but I don’t generally use a lot of digital multifx pedals. I wasn’t sure if that made a difference on where to run it.
Just waiting for my ocean machine, ordered after watching this video.
Just one question please:
Where is your stereo signal going after the Ocean Machine?
Have you got any amp modeler, just a PA or two real amps?
I user the Avid Eleven Rack amp modeler, and I put all delays and reverbs (including the Ocean Machine) in the effects loop -mono in / stereo out.
Does this have a Dotted 8th delay setting?
Bill: did you get a chance to use the 4 button foot switch for the Moore Ocean? Thanks
The Mooer C4? No I have not. I just read a review or 2, and it looks to be limited in functionality.
Just been playing around with this Bill and people are always asking what they can do to improve their ambient music with different pieces of equipment (yes I am guilty) but there are so many settings on this Ocean machine seems infinite , I am beginning to wonder if anything else is needed....:-)
Excellent video. does the ocean machine have a shimmer?
Yes it does.
Just been playing with the Mooer to create long long drones and have discovered the secret is in the feedback control of the delay but what does the timing control do?....how does it affect the drone time, i'm a tad confused
are you referring to the time knobs? They adjust the length of the delay. Decay/Feedback adjusts the number of repeats.
Hey Bill.....When I record two solo's over the drone, is there a way to delete just one of the solo's instead of having to start from scratch each time?
I don't think the OM has an undo function, which means you can't delete layers.
Question: Just before the 3 minute mark where you demo the Reverb tone to make the comment "The import thing to know there is that I have the dry signal completely removed from the Reverb" or something like that. How do you do that? How do you remove the dry signal from the Reverb (or from any tone, for that matter)?
Hey Scott: I am pretty sure I was just referring to the blend or mix knob on the reverb section of the Ocean Machine. If you turn it all the way clockwise, it knocks out the dry signal and just leave you with the reverb effect.
Yes, I figured it out shortly after asking you the question. I had tried to rotate the mix level all way up but initially nothing seemed to happen. Then the next time I powered it on it was working correctly so not quite sure why there was a delay. But since then I've been having success creating some ambient tones. Thanks again.
can i use this amazing pedal with my double bass ??
If you have a bass pickup system, then I would say yes.
Quick question, is the unit true stereo?
Yes - the effects have a real stereo field.
Thanks. Mine's on it's way!
Love your channel, BTW. Great stuff.
how it work? should this substitute strymon timeline and blue sky?
It works well for what it is, but it will not replace the Timeline or the BlueSky. They sound quite different.
