I think you would like Rob Dukes era Exodus. Much more of a venomous, raspy vocal style. Plus, Dukes is a fucking beast!!!

Getting rid of him was the biggest mistake the band or dukes or whoever in charge of this decision ever made.

I'd put the big four in the exact same order as you for the same reasons. I had one Anthrax album on cassette and kept getting that song about the persistence of time stuck in my head, but really can't remember the other stuff. I never got into the glam bands really. Not sure what category Skid Row were in, but I really like their album "Skid Row", and still listen to it now. Singing along in my car, demonstrating the full range of my voice....scaring all the local wildlife...

I thought the first few Skid ROw albums were great. I still listen to "18 & Life" a lot. Great song.

Anthrax like Status Quo and Quiet Riot are mostly known to the masses for cover songs which is sad.
I have seen Anthrax live twice. I haven't liked them much since 1980's, and i don't think i can name one song they made after 1990.

For some reason, the "classic" Anthrax albums are the one's I like the least. I enjoy a bit of the albums "Sound of White Noise" and "Worship Music".

Manson best era was the trilogy of AS/Mechanical/Hollywood. Before that..meh.. I know he was doing the spooky kids thing so it had that Scooby Doo vibe going on...the later albums got really pop. I like em but his best was the trilogy.

Interestingly, I have never had a situation where I just hated bands with a passion. There are those that I always disliked, for example Summoning, I also don't understand The Offspring, The Exploited, Of Mice And Men. Anathema and Rammstein sowed contradictory feelings in me. The most popular METAL band in Russia called Ария (Aria) they have been around for 40 years and literally every second song of theirs consists of ideas and harmonic scales that they took from Maiden and Judas Priest, people always make fun of this fact.

I also can't get into Anthrax for some reason. I tried some of their albums and the only one I kinda like is Spreading the Disease.

  • @Hathajoy8
    @Hathajoy8 19 годин тому +1

Gotta agree with a lot of these, man. Great vid.
As a fan of Anthrax, I actually got into them via their more groove metal 1990s albums with John Bush on vocals. The Sound of White Noise and Stomp 442 are utterly pummelling and much different from the Balledonna stuff.
Motley Crue’s self-titled album which they recorded with John Corabi instead of Neil is also pretty stellar, with much less vapid songs and a far heavier, dirtier sound and darker tone (because 90s grunge, but still). Like with Bush era Anthrax, it’s basically a different band so shouldn’t be dismissed sight unseen.
I’m guessing you’re very aware of these, but just thought I’d mention them.

    • @ThatMetalBloke
      @ThatMetalBloke  6 годин тому

First album I heard from them was Sound of White Noise which I enjoyed quite a bit but I kind of fell off from there.
MC self-titled had some good stuff but I think they were a bit shitty to John from what I remember.

I loved it when you said you dont like criticizing bands shortly after completely dismantling The Offspring 😂
As for my list, the first two bands that came to my mind were Megadeth and Slayer. Megadeth is probably because I cant stand Mustaine's vocals, I just cant (I have nothing against high-pitched vocals, I love Pavlov's Dog for example). Slayer is probably because I find them incredibly repetitive and boring. I have listened to Reign of Blood repeatedly and still cannot get anything out of it.
The next two are probably very contentious for many but still - Alice in Chains and Faith No More, with the major reason being is that I am not into grunge and a similar type of alternative rock (with Nirvana as the sole exception). I will add new names to the list in the comments section to your next video.
It is actually interesting to consider how one's attitude to a band/performer changes after one learns about their obnoxious behaviour. I find it quite easy to distinguish an artist from his/her sins and still enjoy the music. Take, for example, Lostprophets and the scandal involving the lead singer. Of course, I disappove of what he did but nevertheless Last Train Home is always on my list. I wonder what you guys think about such instances and how they affect your perception of art

    • @onewhitepony
      @onewhitepony Годину тому

I get it i can do that as well. Does taint the art but I can enjoy it. Like Roman Polanski movies for me. Horrible person but made some cool movies.
For me I do like Slayer probably the 80s albums but they did some more groove stuff later that I liked. Megadeth I get that. Musically it's awesome but Dave's voice does have that nasally thing going on. I can listen past it. But I know why people wouldn't like it.
In the grunge era Pearl Jam was the one i couldn't get into. Honestly it wasn't until recently I really listen to Alice in Chains (of course past the hit songs we all heard a thousand times) and found it pretty good stuff

I'll play along. In no particular order 10 popular bands I can't stand or don't care for: Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, U2, Dave Matthews Band, Hatebreed, Filter (I saw them open for Alice Cooper and I legit could not stand them), Aerosmith, Yes, Imagine Dragons, Red Hot Chili Peppers.

    • @MagusMirificus

Same except old Hatebreed. The ep and first album for me. I do like U2 but mostly select albums. Filter the hit songs were ok the rest never got into.
Not trying to be that guy..but I'd throw in Beatles for me. Never got the appeal felt overrated to me. Don't hate em don't love em just didnt get it. Hell I'd throw all the pop "punk bands" of the 90s in the pile. But I'm also not biggest punk fan (odd I'm a huge metal head) but yeah Offpsring and the like no thanks for me

I don't really like Offspring either, but I have the album "Smash" on my shelf and love almost all of it. The two songs I don't like are the two most poppy tracks, "Self Esteem" being one of them, "Come Out and Play" being the other. The rest of the album is fire.

    In no particular order…
    1. Smashing Pumpkins - vocal range
    2. Marilyn Manson - voice
    3. Van Halen - vocal range
    4. STP - post-grunge boredom
    5. Offspring - one song is all you need from these guys
    6. Boston - one song is all you need form these guys
    7. Motley - you know…
    8. Primus - too quirky
    9. RHCP - FNM was better
    10. RATM - angry wuss music for weak punks

    7. Manson thanks for reminding me
    6. Rolling Stones
    5. Metallica great cover band though
    4. Green Day

I never really got into Jane's Addiction either. I tried several times, but ultimately, I only like a couple songs. The best thing they ever did was the first two minutes of the song "Three Days". Shame about the rest of the track hah
Marilyn Manson is too much of an edgelord for my teastes, but I do think that much of the album "Holy Wood" has a really fantastic dark atmosphere to it. Great sound design. The rest of his albums bore me to tears.

    1) Early Van Halen was good, but they got so over played that I got sick of them.
    2) LOVED "Spreading the Disease" & "Among the Living" but, NOTHING other than those two records did much for me from Anthrax.
    3) LOVE Exodus, they are one of my favorite bands.
    4) Motley Crue is too glam for me & I HATE glam.
    5) Pearl Jam is Okay, I don't change the radio channel but, I wouldn't buy their C.D.s.
    6) I LOVE the riff from "The Beautiful People" but, Manson is so degenerate that he disgusts me. He may actually be a Pedophile.
    7) I was a KISS FREAK when I was a kid in the 1970's but, "Creatures of the Night" was the last album they cut that was worth a crap & the two records before it were trash as well. Gene & Paul are the living embodiment of EVERY negative stereotype about Jews there ever was. I'm not anti-Jewish but, I would be if every Jew was exactly like Gene & Paul. Ace & Peter are not perfect either but, they are both better than Gene & Paul in spite of their drug & alcohol abuse. I read Ace's book "No regrets" & he said he was glad he never killed any of his friends with all the car wrecks he's had. I guess the drummer from Hanoi Rocks that died as a passenger in Ace's Delorian must not have been his friend.

Some great picks from your list and I was surprised by a few of them. I do agree on Van Halen and EVH still is a beast of a guitarist to listen to. I do like Anthrax, but I can understand why people wouldn't get into them highly like the Big 4 and other thrash bands. I think Exodus are very good and I enjoy their writing style through the genre's history. I am a fan of Pearl Jam and I would think they are one of those over hated bands and their discography is one of my favourites. I do appreciate your honesty when you are open minded and to share the respect of their music while they don't deliver any inspiration from your taste.

Pretty cool that you were open minded enough to give KISS a second chance. They have a very long history with a lot of twists and turns. If people can get past the larger than life imagery and endless rambling interviews the band members have done, they will probably find at least SOME of their music enjoyable. Take care!

I found it odd that you never mentioned Hagar while talking about Van Halen, just that you really didn't like Roth. Did Hagar sweeten the band at all for you? Also I love Anthrax, but I can see how the high pitched singing could get on some nerves, but like Van Halen, when Bush was singing for anthrax did it change your opinion at all? Great video as always, keep up the good work!

  • @a1m4thah3d

One band I always wanted to like but couldn't is Mercyful Fate. I love the music, love the imagery, but I just can't get in to that high pitched vocals stuff. Same reason why I could never get in to Power Metal or any other band with high pitched vocals. Its like nails on a chalkboard for me. Iron Maiden is the only one that worked for me. Other bands I can't stand are Led Zepplin, AC/DC, Tom Petty, Aerosmith, Ghost, Shinedown, Creed, Korn (only when he started trying to sing more. First two albums were great. He just got too whiny for me)Coldplay, Limp Bizkit, Imagine Dragons, Bring Me The Horizon, and Falling In Reverse. Babymetal used to be on this list but I somehow fell in love with them a few months ago after hearing "RATATATA".

  • @hexedriffsstudio

I 100% agree with you on all of these. Especially when you said about the vocals.
I will never listen to a band ever again if the vocals are high pitched, senseless screaming, sounding a like teenage brat having a temper tantrum. Like Stary From The Path, BMTH, FIR, Knock Loose etc... THAT sub genre of 'metal'. Is just a giant NO for me.
But for me my top 10 bands i really hate, that most love are:
Anthrax - Lorna Shore -Knock Loose - Slaughter To Prevail - U2 - QOTS - Guns N Roses - Motley Crue - BMTH - Sex Pistols.
As you said, music has to get you in the heart. It needs to scratch that itch for you every time. & none of these bands above (& more*) do that for me personally.

I enjoyed this video. Just curious with Anthrax, did you have any preference with Bush vs Belladonna material or did neither do anything for you? I found with Manson he had that one drum beat and used it in every song. Once you got over the shock value the excitment ended pretty quickly for me. As for my meh bands... (I am going to get slaughtered for some of them ha):
RHCP: I saw them live twice in the 90s and they were rubbish. The singer admitting knowingly sleeping with a child in his autobiography also didn't help me endear to them.
Deftones: I just can't get into the voice and the riffs never excited me.
Tool: I've never got passed the singles as I always get bored halfway through them.
Mastodon: This band I've tried a lot harder with and have a few albums and whilst I don't hate any of it, it's never gripped me the way it has for just about everybody else!
RATM: I think I've just heard Killing in the Name too many times and it didn't help when for three years at uni, every rock night the DJ would play this song and when it came to the chorus turn down the volume and shout 'everybody' to which the whole room would respond and sing 'fuck you I won't do what you tell me'. For three years they whole room did exactly what they were told once a week at that very moment!
Slayer: I enjoy South of Heaven but that's about it. Reign in Blood just doesn't get me excited (I know at this point I am going to get chased out of town!). I find the other three of the big four just more interesting and varied.
All newer metal bands with hardcore style vocals: When will this end? I have lost count of the newer metal bands I enjoy until the vocals kick in and it's the same boring hardcore vocal style. When everything is already heavy I could really do with something different on top and it's so rare I get it.
That'll do for now. Feel free to do a part 2. I am sure I can get myself in more trouble with the next one too! :)

I agree on all of these except Anthrax and Exodus. But(!), the John Bush years haven't aged well for me, and Zetro's vocals have gotten grating on the last couple albums. Also, Anthrax, Testament, Exodus, Metallica, Megadeth, etc have all fallen into the trend of releasing really long albums. I can't bring myself to listen to modern thrash much anymore because I'm tired of listening to an album before it's even finished. And no one needs to point out Metallica isn't thrash anymore.

Good list..agreed just about on all of it or I can understand why you wouldnt like them. I have also noticed as I got older, sometimes im more of a fan of ALBUMS rather than bands. Or sometimes just the hit songs.
I have a list of overrated bands that may be thrown in the hate pile or i just didnt understand the appeal...off the top of my head Beatles( sorry i just dont get it) Janes Addiction definitely. Offspring yes and all the 90s popular "punk bands" can get tossed in my opinion. Sublime i didnt get the appeal either. Im sure there is a bunch more but thats just my 2 cent opinion

I can understand your picks here. Legitimate complaints. I love early Van Halen with DLR (even though DLR runs his mouth too much), but hate the Sammy Hagar albums. Horrible. Anthrax has some cool albums, but that rap garbage they did really turned me off. Also, I thought the John Bush era was great. Excellent voice on that dude. I liked Janes Addiction OK when I was much younger, but couldn't care less about them now. I agree with you on the vocals for Exodus. Difficult to deal with. But, I really like the vocals with Rob Dukes. That era of Exodus was great.
Yes, the Offspring is total garbage.
Aerosmith was great in the 70's and early 80's, but then started really sucking and going way too commercial for me. Painful to listen to.
I will always dig the 1st two Motley Crue albums, especially Shout at the Devil. That was my gateway into hard rock when I was very young. But, after that everything they did was pretty awful. They should have gone away 30 years ago.
Pearl Jam has always been very boring. I liked that album 10 back in the early 90's, but never listen to them anymore.
    Yes, Coldplay sucks ass.
I really like the early Manson albums (1st 4 albums) and actually enjoy some of his new stuff too. But, I understand some will always hate him.
