is other emulators like pcsx2, and rpcs3, and xenia safe?
Their next move is simple, they watch the other emulators scamper away and then its smooth sailing for the switch 2. The common person has zero clue what its like when a juggernaut comes knocking at your door with process papers. They have zero clue of the enormous amount of money it takes to even attempt to defend themselves. It was idiotic to start with, to start a emulator for a system that was still in its current life cycle and on top of that they made money from it. Big No No’s
in regards to what you said about older emulation: the clause protecting obsolete formats from the DMCA laws expired in 2010 so if an emulator needs a bios file or similar it must be provided by the end user not the emulator. unless that part is also reverse engineered of course.

This was an out of court settlement. No precedent is set and legal precedent is already established that emulation is perfectly legal much thanks to Bleem vs Sony.
We still have mikage and panda3ds. Thanks to those devs we still have 3ds emulation

This stops nothing. The github was forked and backed up several times before it came down. People are distributing the latest builds before development stopped. All it will take is to rename the emulator, not publicize it, and have a developer pick up where they left off.
Same stuff different day
My thoughts exactly, its just a minor set back. Annoying, yes, but Nintendo arent all that wrong either.
It might be best for emulators in the future to be only released after the system has been replaced by a newer one.
Artic 3DS emulator is a nice name for an emulator.

Or Arctic (overcoming the cold heart of Nintendo)
You seriously underestimate the skill set required and amount of time needed to continue a project like this. It required many people, not a solo developer working a few hours a day. Very few people are capable of working at this level.

Having a Patreon was probably the bullet in the foot.
The donations are voluntary, no one is forcing them to pay for it, the "Yuzu early access" thing I don't know if it is worse than the above.
Honestly, having millions of people emulating totk before it's official release was the bullet in the foot
More like having one with specific tiers for targeted versions. A fine line between asking for donations and literally charging for the privilege.
And merging commits for unreleased games
I doubt it was millions. As many people do emulate which I do its probably a fraction of how many have the game. Nintendo is just greedy. @AaronRose2421
Unfortunately this is official confirmation that Nintendo's tantrums are increasingly getting out of hand, we need to somehow stop them and/or rebel before it's too late... 🤬
Stop buying their products for a couple years.
Again, archive everything, including their github stuff. But as for me, nah, I'm okay without the 3DS emulator and such because I don't bother using it. Thankfully, after doing a quick search, someone archived the citra emulator github code on their page and I've downloaded it into my hard drive as a backup should that one go down as well.

Honestly I couldn't care less about Yuzu, but Citra is a real issue, the 3DS is dead, the store is dead, the prices are skyrocketing especially for the new 3ds XL models. It is truly a bad news for gaming preservation here. F Nintendo really. I hope a new team of talented people will continue to work on this project under a new name or wathever.
Yeah, that’s what really irritates me. I used Yuzu a couple times but ultimately preferred just to play natively on my Switch but my 3DS was destroyed by a fat ugly bitter chick and Citra has been my best option.

Let's hope that Ryujinx stays safe and Mikage and Panda3DS carry the torch that Citra left.
Yuzu's decision to lock content behind a paywall was always a red flag to me. So hopefully that leaves Ryujinx clear.
As for RPCS3, Sony has no solid argument against since as you stated, they literally have firmware wide open to be downloaded. Plus, they wouldn't benefit for going after PCSX2 and Duckstation either.
Hopefully this serves as a cautionary tale for other emulators that rely on dumping keys.
They are all going to have to remove any decryption measures from the emulators moving forward. From now on it's going to be third party tools to crack and decrypt ROMs and then the emulators will play everything unencrypted. And pretend it is intended for use on homebrew games only.
The team behind Panda3DS actually have a good relationship with the Citra team, so maybe they will continue where Citra left off. We can only hope.
they didn't lock content behind a paywall. They gave pre-compiled installations of early access features to patreon subscribers, and they did that for years.

It basically boils down to this: If Yuzu hadn't taken money via Patreon, they would probably still be here.
In all fairness, if Yuzu and Citra were clean, they wouldn't have been threatened in this lawsuit, and fought it out. Obviously, Nintendo had some pretty damning evidence against them, and they decided to just cut their losses. They settle in less than a week? Ya, they were boned.
Future of emulation is fine. Emulation is perfectly legal. It's the method of which the emulation is accomplished, that may be troublesome.
The Yuzu team was sharing games between them on Discord to test the emulator, brand new games too. Hard to argue in court you are sharing for preservation when the game came out on Monday and it's Wednesday.
What is concerning though is if Nintendo makes a precedent about cryptography keys, then emulation is doomed
@@marcelo20xxxx No? 3DS roms are decrypted separately.
@@marcelo20xxxx Thus the end of the suit. If the Yuzu devs were planning to be legal about it, they wouldn't have used stolen keys and there was evidence for them using stolen keys as well. Anybody can steal keys, it's the fact they USED the stolen keys on Patreon in the first place. As for the precedence there's no evidence that crypt keys can't be used by legal users, only the tampering of hardware to get said keys. Like rmn says, 3DS roms are decrypted seperately and the only reason Citra shut down as well is because that was part of the agreement
@@IfritBoi
If Yuzu was using stollen keys why dose Yuzu require you to dump your own keys from your own switch?
If Yuzu already had the keys there would be no need for anyone to dump them.
And what do you mean by "they Used the stolen keys on Patreon"? what dose that even mean?
I was watching closely. Yuzu didn't have patches in EA for TOTK prior for release, only after release. They didn't even work on fixes until the day of the release and were actively banning discussion of the game prior to release within their discord and subreddit. There were third party mods by the pirate community that made the game playable before launch but the main fixes didn't come until after release. I think Nintendo's argument here is that they got a ton of EA subscriptions because they decided to put those patches behind a paywall which encourages people to play this on unofficial hardware, circumvent security measures and play the game "illegally".
Exactly, why are people trying to rewrite history on this?
You know why.@@rassular
They did something dumber that people are ignoring, they shared the games between each other on Discord. Literal piracy. That's why they knew they had no chance since Nintendo got proof of hat. How are they going to argue they are sharing a game that was launched days ago "for preservation"?
Apparently, just as they were banning left and right people for even thinking about piracy, they were sharing among them pirated roms in a google drive full of them. Good riddance of hypocrites.
I think the point was that they were putting the EA version behind a paywall on Patreon and Nintendo don't like people making money when they want that money.
That clone already exists.

This was a no brainer. They used a current gen console to emulate while the library was still expanding. Emulation was supposed to be to preserve classic games from disappearing but the Switch is a current gen console and library still expanding.
This is a big hit for emulation but hopefully it stays just with Yuzu.
Basically every emulator since the PS1/Nintendo 64 generation was born while the console was still alive.
The switch is 10 year old obsolete tech, the n64 was being emulated early into the gamecube life.
Other emulators like pcsx2 and dolphin started early into each of their respective consoles lifecycle lol
It is not only about preservation. It is also about the right to use what you own as you wish, on any device you wish.
@@TheHardcoreGamer1 That's kind of different. That was back in the day when PCs were a very, VERY different beast. This was basically when PC gaming was not about giving you the best possible versions of games so much as it was about giving you games that could run on your average work computer. As such, when you think about emulating at that time? There is really no concern about emulation ever cutting into profits because you're basically talking people buying the game and experiencing it at its full speed and functionality on console... or stubbornly playing a game at half-speed with stuttering audio and broken textures.
Switch emulation is different. Because the tech is not even really based on anything custom by Nintendo and of course the system itself is not as powerful as others while PCs eclipse it? This means that you not only are quickly able to get games working, it's at speeds and resolutions BETTER than hardware and at frighteningly fast rates and with how Yuzu was doing it with the paywalls? It pretty much ensured that they'd have a target on their backs.
It really sucks for Citra, Yuzu, I can totally understand, the Switch is still alive and kicking. But the 3DS has been discontinued for years now, the eshop is closed, no games are sold brand new anymore. It's just a shame, but I assume there will be other emulatior soon for that console.
Hmm.. how much does that MIG flash cart cost?
I have a strong belief that Nintendo sent their ninjas and gave them and ultimatum. Sounds very out of character of them to say all that about emulation
makes sense for them to go after yuzu. it became way too famous & them charging money for keys on discord didn't help their case. citra is a big loss.
If what is being said about Yuzu supporting TOTK before release is true, that would make this a bit more understandable. Still, screw Nintendo. Never buying anything they make again.

That's why i said we might have to wait a year or 2 to make another Switch emulator. Like maybe after Nintendo drops the Nintendo Switch 2 then it'll be more safer for us to emulate the Switch again.
Sony? Jim Ryan always asking every PS fans to buy PS5 only.
Also, Sony shamelessly using PCSX-ReARMed code for their PSX mini console...
There are already other switch emulators.@@sonicthejetsetbeat7465
Unfortunately you can't fight the east dragon with a toothpick big corps wins once again....
Nintendo needs to make our games on a os that allows for uploads of hardware games and emulate like GameCube and Wii U with out online drm and paywalls or this will continue period
So as long as we still have it installed on our computers it'll still work? Just no more updates?
Correct.
Hopefully Mikage or someone's can pick up the torch Citra left behind.
This mark the end of Nintendo. Emu fans will never buy nintendo related devices anymore.
See... the issue with this is that I don't think Nintendo cares about emufans, they care about it becoming mainstream which is sadly not at the moment.
They'll still buy Nintendo stuff. It's naive to think they won't.
Yuzu made a mistake they cant erase
Yes i think yuzu is in the wrong for having a pay wall
Why Cemu didn't get kicked is because it doesnt use a paywall idk if it uses pre keys
Time to decompile Tears of the Kingdom
When it is said that yuzu had totk fixes behind patreon, was that the official yuzu patreon? I don’t recall them providing any support prior to release. It always seemed that they were striving to keep yuzu available to enhance and preserve…and that was consistent with all the responses I ever saw in their discord. So making it work early seems like it would be counter to their efforts. Of course, I don’t have access to their private discussions, so there is likely more to what Nintendo knew.
It was a single dev that had that, not the entire Yuzu team
It's morally correct to pirate Nintendo games
Does this mean that, if someone already has the software and doesn't update (which you can't now anyway), they can continue using Yuzu?
For 5 years I have refused to support Nintendo and I am so glad I did. While we all know about copyright and such I still feel the way they go about things is wrong. They are leeching off their customers by releasing old games and ones which have been bought by people multiple times.
I am done with it and them.
Support Nintendo & play games on Nintendo consoles. They’re protecting their IPs.
Thank you for this video and useful insight Mr. Internet man
so where can i download the latest build of those 2? haven't updated to the latest one
if they are involved in both im guessing part settlement was they had pull plug on citra as well
i'll be honest: since i discovered some features of yuzu were locked behind the patreon ( the totk optimization for example ) and the boxcat ( which was a server which you could get the online updates / news and etc for animal crossing / pokemon and other games WHICH IT COULD SEND DATA FROM THE EMULATOR TO THE OFFICIAL NINTENDO SERVERS ) i was 99% sure nintendo would discover this and sue them.
and it happened, so it doesn't surprise me. of course we lost 2 emulators with one lawsuit ( which is bad ) , and i hope new emulators appear soon. =/
I vote when people use the open source code to continue development of these emulators we call them: Yuzu U and New Citra Plus
