+bulbinking Speed Racer, just like with the live action Flinstones is essentially the cartoon in live action format. Therefore if you loved the cartoon, there's no reason for you to hate the movie since it is the same thing. That said, I hated Speed Racer the cartoon, so I hated Speed Racer the movie. I must say though, as anime adaptations go, Speed Racer was the most competent of efforts, and the Wachowski's definitely show their love for the cartoon by recreating it with a colorful look and uncanny casting, especially John Goodman as Pops racer. So it was not the Wachowski's fault the movie sucked, it was the cartoon's fault for sucking in the first place. The cartoon, is also a great thing to watch while high as a kite. The whole production is slap dash, everyone talks way too fast, the plot goes on too long and yet says so little. There are annoying side characters, and the main characters are bare bones wooden. You know, I realized something about both the Live Action "Speed Racer", and "Live. Die. Repeat." Their both Adaptations that work, and they use two very different methods to help with adpating their japanese mediums. For Speed Racer: it was a Passion Project that is Faithfully to the source. For "Live. Die. Repeat" or "Edge of Tomorrow": a modified script of the manga "All you Need is Kill!" Why these two Work is Clear, as they not only adapt the source to an effective degree, but make the Transitions from Anime/Manga! The exection of these films showed that the Directors/Staff/Actors had more effort and desire to make these films work. Condensing a narrative is never easy, but they managed to not only condense the elements, but add their own layers to it. (Even though its very Hollywood in Style how the endings are.) Regardless of either Movie's flaws, there is a level of competantcy among the Creators of both films, and I cannot stress how important that is. No matter what anyone says, I still consider these to be the best Anime Adaptations.
27:55 "Terrible to me is not caring." That's a rather profound statement, Sage. I actually think I'll start using that in my own critiques. Wonderful work putting so much in little words.
The giant car and mobster in it is a reference to Cruncher Block and the mighty mammoth car from the original series. It doesn't explain everything, but it makes a little more sense than it first seems.
@@Z-Mikes00 Once upon a time back when youtube was moderately cool NC released basically a music video style film review called "The Wall", a film review of Pink Floyd's The Wall. His thoughts and views were a bit......tasteless to put it nicely, as it comes off as spiteful even though in Doug's own word it's suppose to be a love letter to the film. Everyone even up to now hates it and it remains as critic's most infamous review to date. Can still watch it btw
"Speed Racer is the first, real, big budget, Hollywood adaptation of an anime that was made" - Bennett. The first American Anime/Manga adaptation was *The Guyver (1991)*. Even though the film was panned by critics and audiences alike, it garnered enough success for a sequel, *Guyver: Dark Hero (1994)*. Interestingly enough, in the sequel the protagonist was recast with David Hayter, of Metal Gear and X-Men fame. And a possible third film had been pitched and outlined by Hayter, but the rights reverted back to Japan before it could be made. *Dark Hero* has been considered an cult classic by a small group of loyal fans. Glenn Kenny of *Entertainment Weekly* said the film "often plays like an R-rated *Mighty Morphin Power Rangers* installment [...] that's genuinely amusing if you're in the right frame of mind."
2008 was a year that really tried to push speed racer back into relevance, lego made sets from this movie, nickelodeon made speed racer:the next generation
+Fanus Obscurus He had to get the Nostalgia Critic to do a crossover. I'm not sure Doug would survive the mental scarring of a truly bad anime. Since one of the main points of anime is to have a medium for unrestrained Id in which ANYTHING a writer wants can happen on screen, the worst anime isn't just bad, it reaches the level of Lovecraftian abomination. Can you imagine the poor Critic having to sit through Jungle de Ikou?!
Dustin McNiel tell me about it - an American-made anime adaptation that was ANIMATED? It’s a goddamn miracle - my only problem was not making Tenma the villain, and all the other changes that occurred as a result.
Gabe at the end made me laugh so hard. I've seen this kind of skit so many times, but for some reason his expressions, delivery, and the perfect sound effect of his face whacking the dessert just made me lose it. I've rewatched this clip 5 times now.
Cruncher Block, the "Bond Villain" actually DOES show up in the anime, in fact in one of the first few episodes, but he's stylistically changed in this movie, but retains his original personality.
Ok I'll admit the ending was great, both for having Rob Walker being the dominant brother, Gabe going insane (I laughed my ass off as he was preparing that monster of a sugary dish, Bennett's reaction as he comes home and the downplayed realisation that it was the show's anniversary). Really, the only parts I didn't like were Doug's arguments for hating the movie, but I can't chastise him for having an opinion so to wich his own. Happy anniversary, Sage. ^^
This is my favorite film. I truly do not understand Doug's inability to follow the plot, or him finding the visuals "painful". To me everything flows perfectly and is a thrill to watch.
I could get the painful part. A sizable chunk of the film is 100% CGI, extremely bright colors with a lot of flashing lights, and moving very quickly. I can really see that inducing nausea motion sickness. In fact I have a friend that I'm pretty sure would enjoy the film but probably have the same reaction with the visuals being painful because they are prone to migraines. It can also hurt if you're trying really hard to parse out the details in a scene. If only a few things in the scene or brightly-coloured, it's easier to pick out details. But when everything looks like it came out of a Doctor Seuss book or, well, a Japanese anime from the 60s, CGI can be really tricky on the eye. I would Hazard if they reskin the movie and perhaps tone down some of the flashing and reflective surfaces, maybe muted the colors just a tiny bit, the critic would probably not have that same opinion
8:20 : interesting watching this 6 years later, and now seeing that most all of the list he gave has been made (No 'Akira' or 'Robotech' yet, but lets see what happens in the next few years)
Speed Racers biggest sin is in it's visuals. Mainly because, THIS IS NOT WHAT THE ANIME LOOKED LIKE! Except for the Mach 5 itself Speed Racer played it's racing theme straight and used real world environments and locations. At no point did Speed Racer ever look like a Mario Kart game on acid.
shadowspider9 *_ThIs Is N0t WhAt ThE AnImE lOoK lIkE_* shut up none of the live action movies that come anime look like the anime because *IT AN ANIME IT A HAND DRAWN SHOW, REAL PEOPLE ARN'T HAND DRAWN THERE REAL* and the Mario Carts thing I have 2 small theorys for that 1: they were trying to make the races more exciting. 2: not meny kids know what Speed Racer is, but they know Mario Carts, so they made this look like Mario Carts. theory 1 make more sense
CoolConner 307 Probably the Wachowskis could not film in an actual racing track,(maybe couldn't get permission) that is the only explanation I could give for the BIZARRE racing circuits and generally bizarre CGI backgrounds. The story is..... ok... we don't really watch racing themed movies for the story, we want the racing. And the supporting cast did a great job with what they were given, as good as you can get from a script that is essentially a Saturday afternoon anime from the '90s.
Robotech! WOOT! I really enjoyed Speed Racer, it is not perfect, but it is and probably will remain the most faithful adaptation of an anime that I will ever live to see.
Maybe Racer X has an alias that is an easily recognizable public figure. He wouldn't be the first person to have more than one secret identity. Lamont Cranston was one of many civilian identities the Shadow took and they pointed out each one is the same person.
@@unwelldanny7108 No, Racer X has that shitty voice and even when he's unmasked, he doesn't look sexy. Now if it were Steven Blum voicing him, oh god. Liked only for saying Birdman is hot. I agree with you there.
eh say what you will about the film, I still see it as my #1 favorite film of all time, and every time I watch it I just find new appreciation for it, and I've been watching this film for 12 years now
... Why _didn't_ they get Tim Curry to play the villain? I mean, if you're going to direct Royalton like Tim Curry, then you might as well get Tim Curry. No one does Tim Curry like Tim Curry.
This is one of the best crossovers the NC's in, if you ask me! Also, the decision to change Rex's appearance actually makes sense to me. It's a double disguise. Appearance can be seen through, as can a mask. But if there's a mask AND a different face behind it? It's all the more difficult to pinpoint an identity.
The closest thing we'll get to a Nostalgia Critic review of Speed Racer. A film either loved by viewers or despised by them. I'm more in between. I used to love the movie alot. However, the reason for that is because I was binded by nostalgia from watching the original Speed Racer show on DVD. Now these days, to me the story and such is forgetable, but the racing action is awesome. I miss some of the designs of the vehicles from the old show like Snake Oiler's car, the mammoth car, and especially the GRX. Compared with the original GRX, the movie version is just ugly. Also, I wish that Snake Oiler's team was the Car Acrobatic Team rather than Hydra Cell. Also, yes, they needed to show more of the Mach 5 in action. But overall, it's not too shaby. Not too shaby at all.
I can't... I'm trying to analyze the criticism so I can learn to help my personal projects... But, when it comes to this film... All I hear is whining about CGI. Are you allergic to it? Because the characters treat the world like it's always been CGI because that's the world they live in. When Nostalgia Critic says it hurts to look at the first race, I'm like... "Are you blind??". Some people treat the CGI like it's bad, while I love the way it looks. In fact, I think it's beautiful, intense and full of energy in a way that real life would NEVER, EVER, be able to replicate or even get close to it. Blistering speed in amazingly creative racing tracks while the atmosphere starts to turn into a canvas and the pilot is the artist. I can't understand it and I don't think I ever will... Whenever I watch this movie, it doesn't make my eyes hurt, it makes me hypnotized and I can't take my eyes off the screen.
I loved Speed Racer when I first saw it as a stupid kid and I still love it. It’s a guilty pleasure I’m not ashamed of and my only proper introduction to the Wachowskis (I didn’t watch the Matrix until late into HIGH SCHOOL, and saw Speed Racer before I hit middle school). It’s got a very unique style, I think everyone acted very well and I loved Royalton and both Mom and Pops Racer especially. The finale race especially is not just my favorite moment in the movie but also one of my favorites in Film for the heart pounding action and the awesome score that was set to it. This movie is awesome and underrated, even if there are flaws all over it and I do love nitpicking about those. But in the end, I don’t care because this movie was and still is a blast.
Speed Racer's extremely stylistic nature is to 'normal' racing 🏎💨🏁, what Top Gun 🛩☁️✈️ is to 'normal' flying. It's an amazing, exhilarating, colorful & complimentary homage to the original anime TV 📺 show. 😎
I really enjoy this film, and I don't even consider it a guilty pleasure. Despite the rapid pacing and extreme colors, I had no trouble keeping up with the action, myself. It's like watching a candy-colored videogame in action. Speaking of which, the game based on this is pretty cool too. I even was engaged in the plot and characters surrounding the races. It's clear that the filmakers wanted to make something fun that didn't take itself too seriously. While I can see how Spritle and Chim Chim's inclusion might be an annoyance to some, to me they just solidified the film's sense of fun, and I think the film would feel a bit emptier without them. And yeah, it is kind of annoying that the big race in the middle didn't really amount to anything in terms of the plot, but the race itself was fun enough that I didn't mind too much. And no, Critic. I do not think those face transitions were obnoxious.
Actually, I take it back. The race in the middle DID amount to something; the heart to heart with Speed and his dad, and the invitation to the grand prix from which Speed was otherwise disqualified. So yeah, nyah all around, Doug.
+chimerschang I also unapologetically enjoy this movie. It's not a guilty pleasure to me because I don't consider it to be a bad movie. I'll say that it is a niche movie that fits a specific crowd, and no I don't mean the "It's so bad it's good" niche. I liked the visuals, I didn't get lost keeping up with the speed of the movie, and I liked the faces of the commenters being used as scene swipes. I thought it was a clever way to focus on the commenters without actually have to change scenes to them in their commenter boxes. Also, the plot isn't that complicated. Maybe it's because I'm used to anime, but it just wasn't that hard to follow. I will say that Spritle and Chim Chim's scenes could get annoying. Not because of their inclusion, but the jokes revolving around them felt forced, overly childish even for children, and too out of place even for a over the top movie like this. That said they don't have that much screen time in the movie, so that helps keep them from being infuriating.
I legit love Speed Racer. It's the perfect live action anime adaptation film, it stays as true to the original source material as possible. Even when Cruncher Block, owner of the Mammoth Car in the anime is about to feed Tejo to his piranhas, you can see the car they are in at that moment, is the head of the Mammoth Car, which I find incredible made it into the film. However this movie pays so much fanservice to actual fans of the anime, that I legitimately can't find anything wrong with this film other than the Mach 5 not being a "sanctioned" racing car.
I love Robs entire scene. Especially his delivery of "STOP KIDNAPPING THE TALENT!!"
well doug did say he has trouble getting rid of his Jackass once
And this is why Rob is my favorite and not Doug.
Because Rob is cool.😎
And Doug is a ASSHOLE.😠
He really delivered, especially when he was under the weather
Critic's reaction to Sage not calling Speed Racer terrible...Priceless.
that's the same reaction i get when i say i like Batman and Robin
Too over the top.
I mostly watch Nostalgia Critic for his freakouts. They're funny in my opinion.
I un-apologetically love this movie. I watch it at least once a year

6 years later and Doug still hasn't reviewed "V for Vendetta". How much patience does he expect us to have?
Is he waiting for the 5th of November to happen on a Wednesday to get the timing right?
You know, I realized something about both the Live Action "Speed Racer", and "Live. Die. Repeat."
Their both Adaptations that work, and they use two very different methods to help with adpating their japanese mediums.
For Speed Racer: it was a Passion Project that is Faithfully to the source. For "Live. Die. Repeat" or "Edge of Tomorrow": a modified script of the manga "All you Need is Kill!"
Why these two Work is Clear, as they not only adapt the source to an effective degree, but make the Transitions from Anime/Manga! The exection of these films showed that the Directors/Staff/Actors had more effort and desire to make these films work. Condensing a narrative is never easy, but they managed to not only condense the elements, but add their own layers to it. (Even though its very Hollywood in Style how the endings are.)
Regardless of either Movie's flaws, there is a level of competantcy among the Creators of both films, and I cannot stress how important that is. No matter what anyone says, I still consider these to be the best Anime Adaptations.
27:55 "Terrible to me is not caring." That's a rather profound statement, Sage. I actually think I'll start using that in my own critiques. Wonderful work putting so much in little words.
Sage just tends to be a better media analyst than Doug.
Doug really knocked it out of the park with his performance, here.
Gabe, too. Awesome anniversary episode, Sage.
The giant car and mobster in it is a reference to Cruncher Block and the mighty mammoth car from the original series. It doesn't explain everything, but it makes a little more sense than it first seems.
I don't think I've ever seen a critic miss the point of a film harder.
(remembers NC's "The Wall" review)
Never mind.
elaborate
@@Z-Mikes00
Once upon a time back when youtube was moderately cool
NC released basically a music video style film review called "The Wall", a film review of Pink Floyd's The Wall.
His thoughts and views were a bit......tasteless to put it nicely, as it comes off as spiteful even though in Doug's own word it's suppose to be a love letter to the film.
Everyone even up to now hates it and it remains as critic's most infamous review to date.
Can still watch it btw
@@kanati1133 not what I'm referring to. I'm referring to how he missed the point of speed racer

That ending scene with gabe was truly hilarious.
I will pay handsomely for an MP3 of that ending credits song remix.
That Going Banana's clip will haunt my dreams from now on.
Cinema Snob made review of that recently. I need to see that now
"Speed Racer is the first, real, big budget, Hollywood adaptation of an anime that was made" - Bennett.
ObiTrev ironically they already reviewed that
He said "BIG" budget; the 1st Guyver movie looked super cheap
2008 was a year that really tried to push speed racer back into relevance, lego made sets from this movie, nickelodeon made speed racer:the next generation
Critic, Critic, Critic... your dealing with an otaku. Speed racer is average bad to us.
+Fanus Obscurus now if u want to give us a movie that will guarantee to piss us off that would be DBE
Were are sadly used to so much live action bullshit
*oldtaku
+Fanus Obscurus He had to get the Nostalgia Critic to do a crossover. I'm not sure Doug would survive the mental scarring of a truly bad anime. Since one of the main points of anime is to have a medium for unrestrained Id in which ANYTHING a writer wants can happen on screen, the worst anime isn't just bad, it reaches the level of Lovecraftian abomination. Can you imagine the poor Critic having to sit through Jungle de Ikou?!
+gantzisballs If you want him to commit suicide by drinking acid and jumping feet first into a wood chipper, while filming himself singing kumbia.
is it just me, or doe Gabe look more and more like a pirate?
To me he looks like ThatGuyBarney
It's just you.
he looks like Snake.
Samuel Bibilashvili .......pirate snake???
Am I the only one who noticed that Gabe was parodying Home Alone at the beginning?
Speed Racer is great. It's not just fun, but as far as eye popping use of colors the film is fucking beautiful.
I'd rather watch Astro Boy than Dragonball Evolution. At least Astro Boy had heart with the wrong approach.
***** Afrika is a unisex name. But you are right. I'm a boy.
Dustin McNiel tell me about it - an American-made anime adaptation that was ANIMATED? It’s a goddamn miracle - my only problem was not making Tenma the villain, and all the other changes that occurred as a result.
Astro Boy has its moments.
Have you seen the French Astro Boy?
@@ThunderClapClide Did you know Imagi was gonna adapt Gatchaman before they went under?
DANG IT
There goes my dreams of a Egoraptor cameo in a nostalgia critic episode. Speed Racer was the only hope.
+William Bailey I could feel my arteries clogging just looking at that monstrosity of a sundae.
Oh Speed Racer, one of my top guilty pleasure films of all time
right there with you love this cartoony acid trip 👍
I nearly lost it when gabe tore his shirt to reveal #teamgabe written on his chest.
This film will always be a favorite of mine , and nothing will ever stop that.
what a nice big bowl of diabetes you got there, gabe
I want some
Either that or a sugar induced heart attack, whichever comes first.......
with food like that, it's no wonder sage has tits.
Happy 5th Anniversary everyone on Anime Abandon!
I did remember seeing bits of it when my dad put it on, I thought it was meh
I will admit, this movie is visually overwhelming. But I actually like this movie.
But you gotta admit, ITS WAY MORE Entertaining than Nascar
+shadowspider9 That actually makes a lot more sense.
shadowspider9 *_ThIs Is N0t WhAt ThE AnImE lOoK lIkE_*

none of the live action movies that come anime look like the anime because *IT AN ANIME IT A HAND DRAWN SHOW, REAL PEOPLE ARN'T HAND DRAWN THERE REAL* and the Mario Carts thing I have 2 small theorys for that
1: they were trying to make the races more exciting.
2: not meny kids know what Speed Racer is, but they know Mario Carts, so they made this look like Mario Carts.
theory 1 make more sense
CoolConner 307
Probably the Wachowskis could not film in an actual racing track,(maybe couldn't get permission) that is the only explanation I could give for the BIZARRE racing circuits and generally bizarre CGI backgrounds. The story is..... ok... we don't really watch racing themed movies for the story, we want the racing. And the supporting cast did a great job with what they were given, as good as you can get from a script that is essentially a Saturday afternoon anime from the '90s.
THANK YOU! Everyone thinks because it's based on an anime it should be super mega over the top.
I would say that Gabe has managed to make the greatest ice cream sunday in history.
16:06 "Pancakes... are LOVE" *I could listen to that over and over lol XD
Living the dream, Gabe. It's so nice to see him get a reprieve every once in a while. :3 #TeamGabe
At the end, Gabe looked like Big Boss in mourning over The Boss.
I loved Speed Racer when it came out, and I loved it even more after I watched some of the original anime and came back to the film 10 years later.
5:33 That sounds like a hopeful "Hint Hint." Also the ending made my day.
Robotech! WOOT! I really enjoyed Speed Racer, it is not perfect, but it is and probably will remain the most faithful adaptation of an anime that I will ever live to see.
Faithfull doesn't make it good.
sans the skeleton I never said it did, I just remarked that it was. Read.
Maybe Racer X has an alias that is an easily recognizable public figure. He wouldn't be the first person to have more than one secret identity. Lamont Cranston was one of many civilian identities the Shadow took and they pointed out each one is the same person.
So that makes him even more of a Japanese Batman.
Critic: this movie sucks because it’s world is weird
Corridor: this movie is a masterpiece because everything in it is telling a story
Gabe just needs a lot of love, support...and the whip.
Gabe, you are a beautiful, MAGNIFICENT creature.
I loved this movie. Never saw the anime but as a kid I got the story and enjoyed the races.
Anyone else seeing a strange connection between this movie and the spy kids franchise?
Abusive though their relationship may be, at least Sage prevents Gabe from killing himself by either suffocating, diabetes, or exploding.
Also that's the voice of London. On that note.
"Pancakes need love like everything does".
Happy anniversary Sage, here's to 5 more years. LONG LIVE BENNETOPIA

Racer X is hot (but not as hot as Birdman, now THAT'S my 60s husbando!)
@@unwelldanny7108 No, Racer X has that shitty voice and even when he's unmasked, he doesn't look sexy. Now if it were Steven Blum voicing him, oh god.
Liked only for saying Birdman is hot. I agree with you there.
eh say what you will about the film, I still see it as my #1 favorite film of all time, and every time I watch it I just find new appreciation for it, and I've been watching this film for 12 years now
Never understood the hate. This was a fun, visually exciting movie. One of the few recent movies that actually "gets" racing.
that ending had me in tears
You know, But Nobody Came would be a GREAT theme to play during the beginning with Critic and Sage.
32:05 I like to think this whole segment is a reference to the Ben Stiller movie "Heavyweights."
every video needs more Gabe, the man is gold
Gabe going home alone is too funny
17:10 "A FAMILY PICTURE" lol
20:01 They operate on Fairly Oddparents logic.
Do Sage and Linkara live in the same apartment complex? The white walls and narrow wood doors look very similar.
Watch The Fairly Oddparents. The episode Channel Chasers explains why.
Why what?
Why what?
8:30 and now it’s finally out and audiences say...
“Hey that was fun! Not deep or ground breaking but hella fun!”
Five years man. Congrats!
It's all the more difficult to pinpoint an identity.
plus the mask can if nothing else throw people off
Inspector Detector looks like Nostalgia Critic.
“STOP KIDNAPPING THE TALENT!” I just love that part, Rob is hilarious.
Captain Fedora
Definitely one of the better Hollywood-anime adaptations, better than..... certain movies that shall not be named......
"why does anyone work for you?"
That line feels like there was some personal enmity being vented.
HEY SAGE! I'M WATCHING YOUR SECRET HENTAI! YOU BETTER COME HERE AND POUND ME!!

"you've seen too many movies sage" so has erm cinema snob
the gabe problem with sweet scene would be much better if ended when he buries his face, because it lasts it drags and became very uncomfortable.
Gabe’s ice cream scene is just….. priceless
It's good to see I'm not the only one who legitimately likes this movie :)
