    I think the reason why Lupin did what he did to the fake bills and felt the way he felt about them is because he's a thief, not a con-artist. It's basically Lupin's job (at least according to him anyway) to steal valuable items, and he relishes the effort people put into guarding their valuable valuables. But fake bills are by definition completely worthless. They are phony, fraudulent, and completely without value. To a thief who prides himself on his ability to get past the most airtight of securities to steal possessions that are worth more than the economy of most small countries, there is nothing more worthless than an item that pretends to have worth and only exists to perpetuate that lie.
    At least that's how I see it.

      You both are right however the biggest reason why he does this is to test his skills and prove to others that yes there basically is nothing he can't steal. As well as for the thrill.

      And it's exactly how I assumed as well. That and i assumed that Lupin wanted to also see Clarice again, as well as just enjoying the challenge and fun of fucking up the Count. Of course these things are all a little later down the line, but considering we were under the impression that Lupin is a changed man now, it was safe of me to assume this.

    David Hayter stole our hearts as Lupin the Third, and then he infiltrated our Alaskan base, fought a dude shirtless atop Metal Gear Rex, got cloned, injected with Nano-machines, son, and all sorts of things that are bound to make a guy go cross eyed, then got screwed over Konami. God bless him. #fucKonami

    As far as realism goes, while having a trenchcoat, fedora, and mask under a neoprene diving suit might be stretching it, the MythBusters confirmed "Plausible" an old James Bond (Connery-era) trick, where he finished a mission in a dry-suit, swam to land at a private party, and came out with a perfect tux underneath.

    GOddamn am I happy you mention the speech, because that is my favourite moment from the movie. Hayter just filled that speech with so much heart and effort you can't help but say it along with him.
    also, I love how the titular castle DOMINATES most of the film, with only a small handful of scenes not taking palce in or near the castle, and the castle itself is what leads to some memorable scenes, and is perrfectly encapsulated as an impenetrable death trap.
    Basically, the Castle of Cagliostro is cooler than the death star.

    Bennett, we goofed on the credits roll on the DVD. Up through 2014, Richard Epcar was credited as the voice of Jigen on nearly all internet sources, and for whatever reason, we didn't question it until after the DVD was in the can. Michael Gregory wasn't credited anywhere online or on any official credit rolls (everyone used pseudonyms on that dub, after all) until we did the research (with some help from an online enthusiast), confirmed it with Michael personally, and got his nod to fix it for the Blu-ray credits.

    Castle of Calliestro was the 2nd Miyazaki film I saw after Kiki and I rented it just because it had Miyazaki's name on it. I had no idea who these charecters were (and Lupin is a looooonnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggg running series in Japan) That said I am also so use to Tony Oliver voicing Lupin that's just odd whenever I switch back to Caligostro and hear Snakes voice coming out of the character.And oh yeah F Konami big time. One of my favorite game devlopers growing up and just to watch them implode under a bad CEO just brings sadness to my heart.
    Oh and Castle of Caligiostro is missing one thing from the Princess Bride. No one says I am Indigo Montya you killed my fathar prepare to die.

    I can answer both questions about lupin and the money: lupin is, at heart, honourable about his job, and prideful. Stealing fake money is not a worthy achievement in his mind, and completely wastes his talent as a thief. Hell, he steals shit more out of a sense of fun and pride than for monetary gain.

    Interesting note about that "convenient trap door." It's not just under Lupin's feet by chance. If you watch the scene, you'll notice how the count has his ninja's first push Lupin on top of it. It's still absurd that he has a trap door right there, but it's a nice little touch anyway.

      Yes, and unfortunately Richard Epcar still lists having done Goemon for this movie on his resume because that's what the DVD wound up saying. Perhaps worse was that there were 2 or so lines that did particularly sound more like Epcar than our favorite Laughing Bull, which may or may not have caused this error in the first place.

      If it's any consolation, I have Kevin Seymour's original casting notes for this film (as well as the SAG bills/receipts for the dub) that lists Michael Gregory as having voiced the character. I received them from his estate via Kevin's nephew, Logan. I sent an email to Richard about it and he doesn't recall. It seems he just copied everything off his Imdb like 99% of other voice actors. Can't exactly blame him. lol

I think some of the voices sound different, and I don't remember Clarisse saying anything about wanting to be a thief in that version. What sealed it for me that it's different is that the scene where the ninja guy realizes he's out of a job has completely different lines. He just says cagliostro's reign is over and then the samurai says something to the effect of "evil tends to destroy itself."

    I often figured that Lupin III really did embody a rather romanticized ideal of adventurous thievery and burglary. Money certainly was something he would often try and steal, but it was more about reaping the rewards of a beaten challenge than simply for the sake of it; He LOVES to be flashy and be met with obstacles about it all, so the bigger and tougher the heist, the more he was attracted by it.
    Stealing counterfit money, to one like him, isn't nearly as intriguing as finding the source device and prints that made it all into such indistinguishable quality in the first place. An extremely eccentric treasure hunter if there ever was one when he's sometimes satisfied in seeing something most never get to see up close to appraise it, he just happened to come across another interesting adventure at the same time.

    PS. I also feel I should mention that in the manga, Goemon is written a lot better. He's sort of the wide-eyed innocent who pretends to be all stoic, because of his samurai roots, but still has a silly side to him that is bought out by lupin. He and lupin start out as enemies, but he eventually looks up to him as a teacher.

    Perhaps a Rumiko Takahashi month where you take on Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, Ranma, Inu-Yasha (yeah, I know you did one of the movies already) and either Rumic Theater or Rin-Ne (though the anime isn't out here yet...)

Or maybe Maison Ikkoku and believes how this is completely different than any of the Takahashi's work and maybe he'll like or dislike it, if he's not into romance type of anime. But for me this is a hidden gem of all of the Rom-Com type of anime

    Just got into this channel. Been going through the backlog of videos and ran across this one. This anime was one of my favorites. I owned Castle of Cagliostro on VHS way back in the day. The dub was different on VHS, especially the voice Lupin. I'm guessing they re-dubbed the cast because of degrading audio quality over decades. I miss the old voice of Lupin, he was played far more playfully and was actually funny... I know this is an old review and no one has commented in years, but does anyone know where to get the original dub?

    • @tims.2717
      @tims.2717 5 років тому

      Yeah, it's on the blu ray with the other english dub. All you have to do before the movie starts is go to settings; english mono (1992) and then, that's it.

  • @autofox1744
    @autofox1744 6 років тому +1

    Couple of fun facts; there's an older English dub of this film which I actually own on VHS, which I think is even better. Aside from that, the hood popping up on Lupin's Fiat 500 is actually reference to the Abarth-tuned racing Fiats, where they had to do this to keep the engine cool.

    • @RichardWatt
      @RichardWatt 6 років тому

      Lupin's Fiat 500 reminds me of the old East German Trabant, or that car the CIA guy in Goldeneye had when he met Bond at the (allegedly) Pulkovo Airport (but that's a comment for another time), and used a sledgehammer on the fan when it wouldn't start...

    • @autofox1744
      @autofox1744 6 років тому

      The car in Goldeneye is actually a ZAZ-965, a Soviet-made car heavily inspired by - though mechanically distinct from - the Fiat 500. It in fact looks quite a lot like a Fiat 600, an enlarged version of the 500.
      The Trabant is just a coincidence, though. It took its styling cues from a lot of small European cars at that time, and was a contemporary of the Fiat 500. It was the first production car with an all-plastic body, though!

    I'm a romantic, so I can forgive, if not embrace the sappiness of Lupin's fairy tale analogy, which also makes things a bit sadder when you watch the Island Of Assassins (aka. Walther P38). If Cagliostro was the Disney fairy tale with a happy ending where the thief thwarts the sorcerer and saves the damsel and rides off into the sunset, then IoA was a Grimm tragedy where the thief thwarts the wizard, but fails to save the princess and her people, and just walks off in somber silence as the nation burns to the ground behind him.

      from what i've heard, the internation gambling association (or whatever it's called, the thing minotoring gambling in various countries, it's an internation one.) or whatever is considering classifing Pachinko (The main thing Konami is abandoning Video Games for) as gambling.......which is illegal in Japan. There is a bill in the works to try and legalize gambling though.
      Lots of ways this could effect them granted this is mostly just from what i've heard so i have no idea how accurate it all is. So take this with a grain......or 40 of salt.

      It's actually correct, there is motions regarding the reclassification of pachinko. Not only that, Pachinko's costumer base has been decreasing rapidly for years.
      There has been a 50% loss of players since 2002 and the existing fanbase is aging with very little young blood entering the mix.
      Not only did Konami put all their bets on a threatened industry, the industry was already a leaking tub unlike the videogame industry, which grows dramatically every year.

  • @WandererRedux

    While *_Castle of Cagliostro_* is undeniably a Lupin movie first and foremost, I can't help but think that Sage underplayed Miyazaki's influences on the project, from the little things to the significant ones. Case and point would be downplaying Fujiko's characterisation as a femme fatale wildcard and (to a lesser degree) that of Lupin's lechery.

      saidi7975 As someone who owns almost all the manga of Lupin. I'd say Mamo more resembles the World's Most Wanted series and the later volumes of the original. The early volumes are more similar to the first couple of episodes of green.

    It did say in the movie that it was the plates that Lupin was after, not the machines and it's what Fujiko goes for in the end. Mind you, I saw a different dub, so not sure if it was covered in that one. Also, Lupin's a thief who goes for valuable stuff. The bills are essentially worthless, but the plates for them would be worth a lot.

    "But the problem is this, that this name appears nowhere on the credits for episodes 1-4".
    Doesn't matter. Animaze credits on non-union productions such as this were notorious for not always being episodic. Just because Mike's stage name doesn't appear in the episodes Gyutner's in, doesn't mean he did not voice the character. It's obviously his voice, crummy credits or not.
