  • Examining the passage most often quoted by Catholic apologists to defend the doctrine of purgatory. 1 Corinthians 3 is quoted by Tim Staples and Jimmy Akin of Catholic Answers. It's even quote by pope Benedict in his 2007 encyclical "Spe Salvi". We are going to examine the passage thoughtfully to see what it really says.

As an ex -catholic, purgatory is like a waiting room to pay for unconfessed and unforgiven sins. Your loved ones will pay for masses and hopefully help you into Heaven. The thief on the cross was a sinner yet he asked the Lord to remember him in His kingdom. What was Jesus response? TODAY you will be with ME in Paradise! Jesus said” It is finished!” He alone carried our sins on the cross and He alone will forgive us. Seek this day whom you will serve, man or GOD, religion or a true spirit filled relationship with Jesus. God loves you! Seek HIM and you will find HIM. The Bible is our truth not man made religions. God is faithful and true✨🙏🏻💖

@ManAboutTown Jesus taught Purgatory several times. The parable of the rich man and Lazarus is an example. The rich man is in a place of awful suffering but not the hell of the damned. Firstly, he addresses Abraham respectfully as Father. But more tellingly he asks Abraham for help for himself initially but then asks help to save his brothers. No damned soul would wish salvation for anyone. Hell is a place of hatred and despair, not love and hope. Damned souls hate God and His creation. Even if given a chance no damned soul would wish to go to Heaven such is there total hatred of God. So obviously the rich man is not in the Hell of the damned. We also see the rich man grow in holiness from selfish prayer to selfless prayer for others. So he is being purged of selfishness and growing in charity, an impossibility for a resident of Hell. Souls are cleansed of lingering attachments to sin in Purgatory. Please pray for deceased loved ones as they may need your prayers on their journey to Heaven. Blessings

Biblically speaking, the concept of Purgatory is completely useless.
If the point of Purgatory is to "purge" sin from the believer, then it is redundant because the blood of Jesus has already done that before God. Further, once we die, we lose our sinful flesh. At the resurrection we will be given a new form. No Purgatory is necessary.

Just because we lose our sinful flesh does not mean we are now sinless and purified. Those damned to hell also lose their “sinful flesh” but that doesn’t mean they get to go to heaven, does it? Mathew 10:28 says our “soul and body” is destroyed in hell. So both those in heaven and hell lose their sinful flesh and take on some spiritual, eternal bodily form, but how come some people go to heaven and some to hell if everyone loses their “sinful flesh” that they have on earth?
Purgatory is not a way to purify our physical bodies, its Gods grace and love working within us to purify our very souls so that we may be “perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect” in heaven.

I’ve been reading C. S. Lewis’s ‘The Great Divorce’ recently, and so far in my reading it has described a ‘grey town’ which is identified as Hell but which could also be described like purgatory, as there is a way out. Without getting too much into it, the way out of this town is through Jesus. Many people, not wishing to put in the effort of purification or being too ser in their ways, opt to return to Hell rather than reach Heaven.
If something similar were to be the case, the only reason there is a purgatory-like process would be because of Jesus. Otherwise it would simply be Hell, with no way out.

Mike, thank you for explaining this using actual verses. As a former Catholic, many people online tell me we must go to purgatory to be cleansed before we can experience God's presence. My instinctual answer is always, “No, you're negating the power of Jesus dying on the cross for us. Paying the ransom for us. Shedding His blood for us. He is enough, if we are saved and live our lives as He commands.” When I was a cafeteria Catholic, I just took purgatory on faith since my education in church ended around age 11. But it was easy to sin as a young adult, because I had purgatory as a fallback. That's a slippery slope. My soul was in serious danger. Had I died then, I was destined for hell. Because now I know purgatory doesn't exist. I've studied the Bible, been saved, both again, and my life is completely different because of Jesus Christ. Please keep reaching people. It's vital for salvation.

I think the problem with Catholic doctrine is the tendency to take verses out of context and to not compare scripture to scripture. From my examination of videos and writings which, admittedly, is not exhaustive, I get the impression that they greatly downgrade the efficacy of the blood of our glorious Savior Jesus Christ. That's why I particularly love the books of Hebrews and Romans which are what I call sister books. Hebrews says that "by one offering he hath perfected forever those who are sanctified." Purgatory is not a "level of judgment". If you are on your way to Heaven but not perfect you will need to be purified. Otherwise, according to Revelation, you can't get in.

➔ The entire foundation of Protestantism is false:...
➔The Bible ITSELF Contradicts Luther's doctrine of "scripture alone" (solascriptura) The Bible tells us that the authority is THE CHURCH: ...
      ● 1 TIMOTHY 3:15 The pillar & foundation of TRUTH is the CHURCH.
      ● 2 TIMOTHY 2 Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that thou hast HEARD from me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
      ● EPHESIANS 3:10 10 His intent was that now, THROUGH THE CHURCH, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms,
      ● JOHN 21:25 Jesus said & did Many other things that are too numerous to be recorded in writing.
      ● 2 THESS 2:15 We are to hold fast to the TRADITIONS we have been given, either by WORD OF MOUTH or by the letter.
      ● 1 COR 11:2 I commend you because you remember me in everything, and maintain the TRADITIONS even as I have delivered them to you.
      ● HEB 13:17 Obey the eldars in the CHURCH.
      ● COR 5:20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.
      ● HEBREWS 13:17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.
2 COR 5:20 says that God appointed men in the Church to represent Him. And, in HEB 13:17, God appointed men in the Church to have the rule over His Flock.
      ● JOHN 13:20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.
      ● MATT 18:15-17
15 Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.
16 But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.
17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto THE CHURCH: but IF HE NEGLECTS TO HEARTHE CHURCH let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.
The True Church is a TEACHING Church: (to Teach means to impart knowledge that is not presently know....not in writing)
      ● JOHN 14:26-31
26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall TEACH you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have SAID unto you. (Spoken words...not in writing)
(To TEACH is to impart knowledge that is not presently known....not in writing)
      ● ACTS 8:31: And he said, HOW CAN I, (understand scripture) EXCEPT SOMEONE SHOULD GUIDE ME? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.
(The scriptures are not for individual interpretation. They need the guidance of the CHURCH. It is PROTESTANTS who are following the doctrines of a man.)

    • @loboman8029

YOU = What you said about Luther is spot on!
ME = When ex-Catholic monk, Martin Luther who had belonged to the strict Augustinian order which practiced severe penances, broke away and started the Protestant Reformation, he changed the focus from Jesus in the 4 Gospels to the " cherry-picked " passages in the other NT letters, mostly Paul's epistles, and moved from Practical Christianity to a Philosophical version which was devoid of the Cross and reduced it to a " Easy Christianity and Cheap Grace " version.
Jesus defined a Christian = Must take up one's Cross daily, deny oneself and follow in His footsteps.
On the other hand, Luther declared " Sola Scriptura " or the authority of the Bible alone thus ignoring Oral Tradition. For Christ died between 30 to 40 AD whereas the earliest Gospels of Mark and Matthew were written over 25 years after, during which time Oral Tradition was the guiding force. Moreover, John 21:25 declares that Jesus did a = world of works = which are unrecorded. Thus Paul stated that there were 2 traditions = oral and written = Thessalonians 2:15. Thus by only holding to the written tradition. the Bible, Protestants are only receiving part of the message For Jesus is the Word of God = John 1:1 = who was sent by The Father as the Way Truth and Life and to teach us how to reach Heaven. And words can be spoken as well as written. The Bible only contains the written word.
Protestants believe that Jesus paid for all sin, as we could not pay the sin debt. Jesus paid it all once for all. And they sadly believe that God will forgive, not only sins against God, but also sins against Neighbour.= Check Matthew 6:14-15 and Matthew 18:32-35.
I urge you to read a Red-Letter Bible precisely to clear any misunderstandings you have about being " saved." I present the examples of Ananias and Sapphira from the 1st Christian - Faith - community who were "executed " by God for just dishonesty and lying - Acts 5. And this occurred just a short time = after = Jesus' Heavenly ascent.
And Jesus' threat to spew out and vomit the lukewarm Laodicean church - Rev 3. Obviously, these people were = not = saved. Moreover, the final judgement is based on works of Love = Matthew 25. This statement is by Jesus, God and Judge.
Protestants have long been weaned on Paul's letters and wrongly equate " saved " with being granted "heavenly citizenship." This is despite the fact that Paul stated in Galatians 5:19-21 that Christians who do works of the flesh will = not = inherit the kingdom of God. In other words they will not receive heavenly citizenship.
Protestants base their theology - their basic belief systems and doctrines, instead of the Gospels, on Paul's letters especially =For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God; 9it is not from works, so no one may boast = Ephesians 2:8-9 = and have arrived at religious philosophy that is distant from practical Christianity.
Protestants believe that Jesus came to earth to die and take away all sins and its guilt association. His cry - It is finished - proved that human redemption from sin was completed, and that those who believe in Jesus would have their names forever written in the Lamb's Book of Life and at the time of death, they would be - absent in the flesh, present with the Lord forever - no matter how many or how grievous they committed sins. Others would be caught up and - raptured - to be with Jesus forever. Thus the promise of salvation was God's free gift - grace - to them.
From the Oral Tradition, Catholics believe that when Adam and Eve sinned, God not only cast them from Eden, and laid - Original Sin - on all their descendants, but also slammed the gates of Heaven shut. God then required that a man must pay the penalty of the man Adam's sin in order to atone for the Original Sins of mankind and thereby open Heaven's gates. However, no man was found to be worthy - sinless - so in the fullness of time, God sent His Son, Jesus, to live sinlessly and die to pay that penalty.. It is finished - was Jesus' cry of Mission accomplished and that Heaven was now open. And that all = original = sins of those past, those present and those still unborn would be forever wiped away. And that Baptism is a one-time - Grace - event that washes all prior sins - 1 Peter 3:21 - However, we are responsible for all sins after, as evidenced by God's " execution " of the couple Ananias and Sapphira from the 1st Christian Faith community for the relatively " minor " sins of dishonesty and lying. And this occurred just a short time = after = Jesus' heavenly ascent. Saved by grace is thus Jesus' freewill offering of Himself to pay the penalty of Adam's sin and thereby open the gates of Heaven.
Jesus commanded, not suggested, the love of God and neighbour. The Cross is the symbol of Love. The vertical beam represents our Love of God and the horizontal beam, our Love of Neighbour. Thus the cross has become the key to open Heaven which is a place of unconditional love where all other virtues of peace, joy, happiness can be enjoyed.

I like to make sure people understand me when I comment or speak.
So let me spoon fed it to you.
In Matthew 12:32, Jesus says: “And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but he that shall speak against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, nor in the next.”
Note, “it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, nor in the next.”
This verse shows that some sins are possibly forgiven in the afterlife.
      Can't be in Heaven.
Because Revelation 21:27 tells us, Nothing impure will ever enter it,
So we know it can't be Heaven cause nothing impure can enter.
      It can't be Hell either.
      Because Matthew 25:46 tells us
"And these will go away into eternal punishment,
So we know it can't be Hell because that punishment is eternal.

Let the Bible be the Bible except when Jesus says his flesh is true food and his blood is true drink. I bring this up because you don't actually believe what you say. You have a lot of man made traditions and interpretations. You said we twist isn't that EXACTLY what you are doing when you are interpreting?
Nothing unclean enters heaven the Bible is VERY CLEAR. It is very difficult if not impossible to die with no sin. So Mike how does that happen? Even you will agree that if you say say a swear word right before death you cannot enter Heaven without some sort of sanctification.
Therefore there is a purification process. That process is what we refer to as purgatory.
It is biblical and it's proper.
While I appreciate your channel you mostly misrepresent the Catholic positions. I would recommend having Catholics on and having a real discussion.

If the Catholic church is a cult then so was Jesus and the apostles because we can prove with certainty that the Apostles taught every single successor Catholic interpretations of scripture. You won't find a protestant interpretation for 1600 years. This precludes protestantism from being Apostolic and is thereforn non-christian insofar as it disagrees with the one true church.
Scripture says every matter must be established by 2 or 3 witnesses:
      Deuteronomy 19:15
"Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses."
      2 Corinthians 13:1
"Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses."
All of the witnesses in the first 16 centuries testify to Catholic doctrines and not protestant ones. Here is one example from St. Ignatius who was the disciple of john the apostle and was ordained by Peter himself as successor in Antioch. Notice he teaches the eucharist and the supremacy of the church of Rome:
      Ignatius of Antioch
"Take note of those who hold heterodox opinions on the grace of Jesus Christ which has come to us, and see how contrary their opinions are to the mind of God. . . . They abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer because they do not confess that the Eucharist is the flesh of our Savior Jesus Christ, flesh which suffered for our sins and which that Father, in his goodness, raised up again. They who deny the gift of God are perishing in their disputes" (Letter to the Smyrnaeans 6:2-7:1 [A.D. 110]).
"...to the church also which holds the presidency, in the location of the country of the Romans, worthy of God, worthy of honor, worthy of blessing, worthy of praise, worthy of success, worthy of sanctification, and, because you hold the presidency in love, named after Christ and named after the Father" (Letter to the Romans 1:1 [A.D. 110])

When the Catholic apologist say you can't separate the person from the works in order to try to redeem his viewpoint on purgatory....this is further proven by the word to be false. 1. Catholics say Mary was sinless. But BIBLE says Mary offered a sinner's offering. She was a sinner. Bible says Mary needed a Saviour. Lk 2:23-24, Lev 12:6-8, Rom 3:10.
    2. Catholics say clergies must be celibate. Yet BIBLE says Peter (supposed R Church first leader) had mother in law. Bible says celibacy is not a qualification for clergies. Mat 8:14-15, Mar 1:30-31, Luk 4:38-39.
    3. Catholics say Mary was forever virgin. Yet BIBLE says Jesus had brothers and sisters. Mary was not perpetually virgin. Mk 6:3, Mat 13:55, Mat 27:56, Mar 6:3, Mar 15:40, Mar 15:47.
    4. Catholics say confess to R priests in a box. BIBLE says nothing about confessing to priests in a box. Bible says confess to GOD only. 1 John 1:9, Mat 6, Romans 10:9-10.
    5. Catholics say drink of the physical blood of Jesus. Yet OT and NT both say do not drink blood. Acts 15, Lev 7:26.
    6. Catholics say pray to passed on Mary and "saints". Yet BIBLE says do not contact the dead. NT Church did not record a single case of NT believers asking passed on saints to pray for them. Deut 18:11, Isaiah 8:19.
    7. Catholics make and bow down to statues. BIBLE says do not bow down to graven images (statues). Deut 4, Exo 20:4-5.
    8. Catholics sprinkles “holy water”. But NT Church of the Bible mentioned nothing about “holy water”. There was no record of any Apostles sprinkling “holy water” on believers. Catholics claimed “holy water” came from OT. Yet Num 5:17 says “holy water” was water used to test adulterous women in OT temple. Hardly the same. Those were for Old Covenant Jews. Not New Testament Christians.
    9. Catholics say Peter was pope - bishop of all bishops. Yet BIBLE says Peter was just a leader of the Jerusalem Church. Bible says nothing of the office of bishop of bishops. Gal 2:9, Mat 16:18.
    10. Catholics say there is a seat of Peter. Yet BIBLE says nothing about it. Jesus said “not to lord over others”.
    11. Catholics has clergy priesthood. Bible says clergy priesthood was done away with in New Testament. There is no clergy priesthood in NT. Heb 7:27, 9:12, 10:10.
    12. Catholics preaches Works Salvation (faith + good works + partake R sacraments + submit to R pontiff + be in R Church + devote to Mary = to be saved). Yet Bible says “believe in Jesus to be saved”. Bible says Works Salvation is cursed. Gal 1:8-9. Acts 16:30-31, John 3:16, Romans 10:9-10.
    13. Catholics says they must do Penance to atone for their sins. Yet Bible says repent, confess and sins will be forgiven. Catholic Bible changes the word “repentance” in NT into “penance”. Original Greek NT does not use or mean the word penance. Penance = work to atone for sins. Repentance = change of heart. 1 John 1:9, Mat 6.
    14. Catholics say Mary went straight to heaven without dying. Yet Bible says nothing about it.

Mike differentiates between Catholics and Christians when in fact Catholics are the original Christians and the Catholic Church is "The One True Church." The Catholic Church was established by Christ Himself when He said, "... I will build My Church." No man can start a church, not Luther, not Calvin nor any other man because only Christ can and He did, "The One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church." All who want to come to Christ should come to the Catholic Church.
Protestants say Catholic doctrine is filled with humanly devised teachings, while Protestants say their teachings come from "the Bible alone." Protestants seem to believe they can infallibly interpret the Bible while at the same time contradicting themselves by saying that no man is infallible. There are many thousands of Protestant groups all claiming "God told them" what the Bible says and yet all have disagreements on what the Bible says. Does God tell different groups different things?
And how do Protestants even know they have the authentic Bible? Protestants who say no man is infallible still claim their humanly devised criteria can infallibly determine what books are in the Bible. But this cannot be true because fallible human opinion can never infallibly recognize which books are God-breathed Scripture. If God did not give the Catholic Church the infallible ability to recognize the God-breathed books when it put together the Biblical Canon, we could never know them.
Happily we can know which books are God-breathed and what is true Christian doctrine because God did give infallibility in matters of faith and morals to "The One True Church," the Roman Catholic Church. God Bless.

Purgatory doesn't exist because no one has gone into the heaven where God resides but Christ alone.
The Bible is clear in that.
John 3:13 "And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven."
All the dead are still in the grave till Christ returns.
The newly restored Earth will be the place the resurrected redeemed will live in eternity. The New Jerusalem will descend from above.
Wicked Catholic Pope's, even one Pope murdered another and many other wicked deeds have. proved by their fruits who they followed and it wasn't God.
That's why God's church isn't built on any man, and there is no such thing as apoptotic succession.
No mortal can stand in the place of Holy authority. Only Christ is the ROCK and even Judas wasn't fit and was called som of perdition.
John 17:12"While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled."
I suggest to all reading all of John 17 and study it slowly and you will see Christ said the
ones God gave him, referring to his apostles, none were lost, except the son of perdition.
Besides other texts, this also proves there is no apostolic succession because the only apostles were the ones God called to document his birth, life and death and to wrote the inspired words in scripture.
In Revelation 21, the wall of the city is shown to have the twelve foundations and has the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
Twelve is the number of perfection and completion. It represents a biblical truth and apostolic succession destroys this truth and mocks God's ordained order.
Christ said it is finished and he didn't need to add more apostles to add to his word already given. All sin is taken care of by Christ, not certain ones.
He told the apostles the Holy Spirit would bring to them a REMEMBRANCE of all he taught THEM.
What they wrote is the only inspired, true gospel we need to be concerned with.
Catholicism trys to interfere with God's only ordained order. Making disciples isn't making more apostles.
It's sharing what was given to the original and only apostles of Christ of which Paul is included because he was chosen by Christ himself who appeared to him as the resurrected living Christ.
The other apostles recognized as one of them and they were all alive to witness Christ, and that was one of the main criteria of being an apostle. No one since can claim that position.

Read the story or the rich man and Lazarus. The rich man is in a place of torment, a sea of fire. But is it the hell of the damned. Obviously not, for 2 reasons. Firstly, the rich man addresses his first plea on behalf of himself to Father Abraham. A damned soul would never obey the 4th Commandment by honoring Abraham. The second prayer of the rich man is not for himself but for his brothers. He is progressing in charity. No damned soul would wish for the salvation of any soul nor pray for salvation. Hell is without love, only hatred. So , therefore, the rich man is not damned. He is in a place of suffering where he must grow in love. He is in Purgatory. Jesus distinguishes between Gehenna(Hell) and Hades(Purgatory). Read Luke12.35-48. Here the good servant is rewarded, the unfaithful servant is lost and the other two servants suffer various levels of suffering without being lost. So Purgatory is real, Jesus taught it and we should pray for our relatives and friends who have gone on to face judgement. Some may be looking for our prayers to help them get to Heaven. If Father Abraham can help then so can we by our prayers for souls. Hope this helps and God bless on your earthly pilgrimage.

Sterling Crowne Am l to believe that damned souls pray for the salvation of others? Not true as they are filled with hatred and despair. The rich man is being purged of lingering attachments to selfishness and we see his improvement as he prays firstly for himself and then for his brothers. We die with either perfect or imperfect sorrow. One comes from love of God the other the fear of punishment. We are obliged on earth to try to improve our behavior and remove faults. If we die with ,for instance,a bad temper that we never took steps to control we need purging. Jesus forgives but we have the obligation to grow in charity with Gods help.Luke12 tells the story of 4 servants being rewarded as they deserve. One is saved , one lost and 2 suffer varying degrees of punishment. Heaven , Hell and Purgatory. In Corinthians Paul writes of us being cleansed but only by fire. Maccabees also speaks of praying for the dead but Martin Luther removed this book from the Bible. Blessings and let us continue to pray for our deceased loved ones especially if any died with unforgiveness in their hearts.

    • @larryluch8178
      @larryluch8178 4 роки тому

Sterling Crowne Abraham and Lazarus are saved. The rich man is also saved but must be purified of lingering attachments to sin. His repentance is imperfect. The good thief died with perfect contrition, sorry because he had caused God to suffer. Possibly the rich man repented but had not, during his life, done enough to eliminate lack of charity from his life. Christians always did penance . Pilgrimages to Santiago de Compastella, The Holy Land and the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico are just some that pop into my head. Fasting on Wed and Fri was encouraged. Jesus did everything to win salvation but we, with His help, must grow in holiness. As for Maccabees, l read it as part of the Bible and l can assure you it is worth the effort, especially the courage of the widow and her 7 sons defying the persecution of Antiochus.

Even accepting the 2 Maccabees passage as true, the sin offering for the dead does not imply Purgatory. It only implies that God, knowing whether such an offering took place, accounts for that in the Judgment at the end of days, which is actually when the Bible declares that the wicked will be sent to the fires.

"Purgatory." The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches:
All who die in God’s grace, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven (1030).
This seems so simple. Its common sense. Scripture is very clear when it says, "But nothing unclean shall enter [heaven]" (Rev. 21:27). Hab. 1:13 says, "You [God]... are of purer eyes than to behold evil and cannot look on wrong..." How many of us will be perfectly sanctified at the time of our deaths? I dare say most of us will be in need of further purification in order to enter the gates of heaven after we die, if, please God, we die in a state of grace.
In light of this, the truth about Purgatory is almost self-evident to Catholics. However, to many Protestants this is one of the most repugnant of all Catholic teachings. It represents “a medieval invention nowhere to be found in the Bible.” It's often called "a denial of the sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice." It is said to represent "a second-chance theology that is abominable."
Perhaps the best place to start is with the most overt reference to a “Purgatory” of sorts in the Old Testament. I say a “Purgatory of sorts” because Purgatory is a teaching fully revealed in the New Testament and defined by the Catholic Church. The Old Testament people of God would not have called it “Purgatory,” but they did clearly believe that the sins of the dead could be atoned for by the living as I will now prove. This is a constitutive element of what Catholics call “Purgatory.”
In II Maccabees 12:39-46, we discover Judas Maccabeus and members of his Jewish military forces collecting the bodies of some fallen comrades who had been killed in battle. When they discovered these men were carrying “sacred tokens of the idols of Jamnia, which the law forbids the Jews to wear” (vs. 40), Judas and his companions discerned they had died as a punishment for sin. Therefore, Judas and his men “turned to prayer beseeching that the sin which had been committed might be wholly blotted out… He also took up a collection... and sent it to Jerusalem to provide for a sin offering. In doing this he acted very well and honourably… Therefore he made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin.” FROM CATHOLIC ANSWERS

I think Mike touches on a great point answering the very first question.
The concept of sleeping in death appears about one hundred eleven times in Scripture, and every instance refers to a restful state of physical restoration or a peaceful state associated with death.

Where do we get the idea for the traditional tombstones that reads, ‘rest in peace’? When we die, the body returns to the ground and sleeps while the spirit returns to God. There is a separation between the mortal body and soul at death, or when we sleep.

    Ecclesiastes 12:7
7 then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.

We are only called to awaken at the day of judgement. Therefore, when we die, the body is sleeping and not tormenting in a place that purges sins. We are sleeping peacefully. What will thousands of years feel like when we are called to awaken from the sleep of death?
    1 Kings 2:10
Then David slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David.
    Daniel 12:2
Many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, these to everlasting life, but the others to disgrace and everlasting contempt.

1 Thessalonians 5:9-10
9 For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him.
    2 Peter 3:3-9
3 Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, 4 and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation.” 5 For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, 6 through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water. 7 But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
8 But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. 9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
Sleep seems to defy time and space even when dreaming, but also in the absence of dreams. In modern times, the time lapse associated with sleep can be compared to a medical operation under anesthesia; a person awakens with, “How long was I under? It felt like just a second ago.”

    Hebrews 9:27
And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment,

    Matthew 10:28
28 Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Romans 8:10
If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness.

I grew up in a denomination that teaches soul sleep and denies that people go straight to heaven or hell at death. That doesn't bother me too much, but they generally believe that soul sleep is referring to a literal sleep. To support this, they often pointed to John 11: 11-14, where Jesus declares that Lazarus had fallen asleep, but He was going to awaken Him. What those who hold to literal soul sleep often ignore when citing this verse is that Jesus had to correct His disciples when they assumed He was speaking of literal sleep. That very clearly implies that Jesus was speaking metaphorically.

in order for a sin to be mortal three factors must be present: grave matter, full knowledge and full consent of the will. In any given case an outsider cannot know definitively if full consent or full knowledge is present in the sinner. Also, we cannot know if, in the last moments of life, the person heartily repented.

To God all sin is the same, and the wages of sin is death. He made no differentiation between mortal and venial. But He gave us His only Son to pay for all sin for all mankind for all time; He loves us that much. And since He is omniscient, HE knows if we repented. Yes the bible teaches purgatory in Corinthians and Maccabees but Luther took seven books out of the bible as well as changing many parts of the bible to break and bend it to fit in with his views which included hatred of the Jews and then Catholics. But he had no divine or other right to do what he did in order to justify the reformation..
In about 367 AD, St. Athanasius came up with a list of 73 books for the Bible that he believed to be divinely inspired. This list was finally approved by Pope Damasus I in 382 AD, and was formally approved by the Church Council of Rome in that same year. Later Councils at Hippo (393 AD) and Carthage (397 AD) ratified this list of 73 books. In 405 AD, Pope Innocent I wrote a letter to the Bishop of Toulouse reaffirming this canon of 73 books. In 419 AD, the Council of Carthage reaffirmed this list, which Pope Boniface agreed to. The Council of Trent, in 1546, in response to the Reformation removing 7 books from the canon (canon is a Greek word meaning “standard”), reaffirmed the original St. Athanasius list of 73 books.
So what happened? How come the King James Bible only has 66 books? Well, Martin Luther didn’t like 7 books of the Old Testament that disagreed with his personal view of theology, so he threw them out of his bible in the 16th Century. His reasoning was that the Jewish Council of Jamnia in 90 AD didn’t think they were canonical, so he didn’t either. The Jewish Council of Jamnia was a meeting of the remaining Jews from Palestine who survived the Roman persecution of Jerusalem in 70 AD. It seems that the Jews had never settled on an official canon of OT scripture before this. The Sadducees only believed in the first 5 books of the Bible written by Moses (the Pentateuch), while the Pharisees believed in 34 other books of the Old Testament as well. However, there were other Jews around from the Diaspora, or the dispersion of the Jews from the Babylonian captivity, who believed that another 7 books were also divinely inspired. In fact, when Jesus addressed the Diaspora Jews (who spoke Greek) he quoted from the Septuagint version of the scriptures. The Septuagint was a Greek translation by 70 translators of the Hebrew Word. The Septuagint includes the disputed 7 books that Protestants do not recognize as scriptural.
Initially, Luther wanted to kick out some New Testament Books as well, including James, Hebrews, Jude, and Revelation. He actually said that he wanted to “throw Jimmy into the fire”, and that the book of James was “an epistle of straw.” What is strange is that Luther eventually accepted all 27 books of the New Testament that the Catholic Pope Damasus I had approved of in 382 AD, but didn’t accept his Old Testament list, preferring instead to agree with the Jews of 90 AD. Luther really didn’t care much for Jews, and wrote an encyclical advocating the burning of their synagogues, which seems like a dichotomy. Why trust them to come up with an accurate canon of scripture when you hate and distrust them so much? And why trust the Catholic Church which he called “the whore of Babylon” to come up with an accurate New Testament list? Can you imagine the outrage by non-Catholics today if the Pope started throwing books out of the Bible? But strangely, Luther gets a pass on doing that exact same thing.

What did the Pagan Emperor Justin do after his physical repression of Christianity failed … He encouraged those who did not agree that the Son of God was also God … He sowed division in the Church …. John Dawson Biblical interpretation is difficult and the number of churches teaching contradictory messages is evidence of this. Interpretation is made more difficult when translations into English are unclear. Catholic teaching on Purgatory comes from the teaching of Jesus. Take the rich man and Lazarus. The rich man is in a place of awful suffering but he is not in Hell of the damned. Firstly, he addresses Abraham respectfully as Father. But more tellingly the rich man asks Abraham to warn his brothers not to come to this awful place. No damned soul would wish salvation for any other person. Hell is a place of hatred and despair, not love and hope. Thirdly, the rich man grows in holiness and charity, moving from selfish prayer to selfless prayer. There is no improvement in Hell. A damned soul is in a state of permanent hatred of God and His creation. When we repent we are expected to grow in holiness and charity. If we are careless and lazy in this life we will be purged of our lingering attachments to sin in Purgatory. It is good to repent but we then have to walk the talk. Actions speak louder than words, talk is cheap. God expects us to grow in holiness in response to His free gift of salvation. Blessings

John Dawson The Catholic teaching is persuasive. I often listen to Protestant preachers and find a lot of truth in the sermons. However, on Purgatory they are wrong. In Luke12 Jesus tells the parable of the 4 servants. When the master returns one servant is saved, one is lost and the other two suffer varying degrees of punishment. Heaven, Hell and Purgatory. Matt18v34-35 and in his anger the master turned him over to the torturers til he should pay all his debt. This is temporary, not eternal punishment. God asks us to grow in love of God and neighbors after repentance. We must walk the talk, so to speak. If we are lazy and careless then we can expect purging before entering Heaven. Imperfect contrition is how Catholics term it. Our sorrow must be perfect, just like the good thief who loved Jesus. I urge you to pray for deceased souls as they may need help. Blessings.

Consider this a vote for the ESV, pretty much all the translations (save the NWT and such) are great but the ESV is in my opinion hands down the best for general use. It is the best blend of word for word and thought for thought available right now. Too much word for word is hard to understand, too much thought for thought loses some meaning. The ESV is really the best blending. The NASB is what I would consider the ideal for really deep study but gets a little dense and the ISV, NIV, or NLT (not really decided on this) would be ideal for those who need an easier to read translation.

Right off the bat I can give you three huge Protestant doctrines that are against the Bible: (1) sola scriptura, refuted by 2 Thessalonians 2:15, (2) sola fide, refuted by Matthew 25:31-46 and James 2:24-26, and once-saved-always-saved, refuted by Matthew 13:3-23.
Not all Protestants believe in once-saved-always-saved but all Protestants do unfortunately believe in sola scriptura and sola fide.

Also I don't think anyone thinks that Christ work wasn't sufficient for... Uniting humanity with God. However Christ Says himself there is greater things to be done and things he can't even do. So we have to talk about sufficient for what. We are given a ministry of Reconciliation. And also unlike what Mike says. Zachariah, Malachi, Isaiah, Daniel, all says there is a burning fire at the End of Judgement and that we all will pass it and it will burn the person. Mike focuses and Says it Action and not person for Corinthians. But we have it especially talked about in old testament the whole person will burn. @@GeorgePenton-np9rh 1. 2 Thessalonians was written before canon had been completed, so of course the church had to go by their words, or by their letters. That does not refute the idea of sola scriptura.
Not to mention that Sola Scriptura only affirms the sufficiency of scripture, not that we shouldn't engage with other books and literature, but that God's Word alone should have authority, not other man-made documents, like the CCC and various other decrees that have no Biblical grounding, like the immaculate conception, papal infallibility and, indeed, purgatory.
      ---
      2. There are many verses that clearly state Sola Fide.
In Romans 4, Paul states that Abraham believed, and it was credited to him as righteousness. This was before he had done any commands of God.
Galatians 2 gives another great example: “We who are Jews by birth and not sinful Gentiles 16 know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ." Paul doesn't say "...justified by faith in Jesus Christ... oh yeah, and the good works you do." He just says faith.
John 5 also makes this point clear: “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life."
If you think that James teaches that works are inherently a part of salvation, you have to throw out the other books (and probably authors) I have mentioned, because Paul and John both explicitly teach Sola Fide.
Good acts are an outpouring of our faith. They are an expression of faith, but they play no part in our salvation. With every single debate about salvation, I always come to the example of the thief on the cross. He was saved. What good works did he do? He didn't have time to do any, all he did was ask Jesus to remember him. His salvation came by grace, through faith alone, and so does ours.
      ---
      3. You've got to be kidding me... Matthew 3 is obviously not a verse about christian believers losing faith, but about the spreading of the message of the gospel. verses 18-23 explicitly say this. Matthew 3 is obviously not about losing your salvation, and that would be eisegesis, not exegesis of the passage.
      ---
I'd love to keep talking through some of these if you want, I think the strongest point you've made is the second one, because at least there are some verses there that could potentially be used to support your argument against faith alone. Obviously I disagree, but hey! That's life.
      God Bless!

The Church quit selling indulgences (quit issuing indulgences for making contributions to the Church) in 1567. But the Church continues to issue indulgences and has never stopped issuing them. Indulgences aren't coming back; they never went away. Nowadays a plenary indulgence can be gained by making the stations of the cross, saying a rosary in Church or as a family, or receiving Communion on Divine Mercy Sunday, the Sunday after Easter. No money changes hands.

Church Fathers on Purgatory and 1 Cor 3:15
    St. Augustine
Lord, rebuke me not in Your indignation, nor correct me in your anger…. In this life may You cleanse me and make me such that I have no need of corrective fire, which is for those who are saved, but as if by fire….For it is said, “He shall be saved, but as if by fire” (1 Cor 3:15). And because it is said, “he shall be saved,” little is thought of that fire. Yet, plainly, though we be saved by fire, that fire will be more severe than anything man can suffer in this life. (Explanations of the Psalms 37.3 - Quoted in Jurgens @ 1467)
And it is not impossible that something of the same kind [purification by fire] may take place even after this life. It is a matter that may be inquired into, and either ascertained or left doubtful, whether some believers shall pass through a kind of purgatorial fire, and in proportion as they have loved with more or less devotion the goods that perish, be less or more quickly delivered from it. (Commentary on 1 Cor 3 in the Enchiridion, 69)
    St Cyprian
It is one thing, when cast into prison, not to go out thence until one has paid the uttermost farthing; another thing to instantly receive the reward of faith and courage. It is one thing, tortured by long suffering for sins, to be cleansed and long purged as by fire; another to have purged all sins by suffering [martyrdom]. It is one thing, in the end, to be in suspense till the sentence of God at the day of judgment; another to be at once crowned by the Lord(Epistle 51.20 comparing Martyrdom to purgation).
    St. Thomas Aquinas
We must therefore say that the very venial sins that insinuate themselves into those who have a care for earthly things, are designated by wood, hay, and stubble. For just as these are stored in a house, without belonging to the substance of the house, and can be burnt, while the house is saved, so also venial sins are multiplied in a man, while the spiritual edifice remains, and for them, man suffers fire, either of temporal trials in this life, or of purgatory after this life, and yet he is saved for ever. (Summa, I, IIae 89.2)
The First Council of Lyons (1245)
…..it is granted that certain sins….are forgiven in the the future life and, since the Apostle says that, “fire will test the work of each one, of what kind it is,” and “if any man’s work burn he shall suffer loss, but he himself shall be saved, yet so as by fire” (1 Cor 3:13,15),….we indeed, calling it purgatory according to the traditions and authority of the Holy Fathers, wish in the future that it be called by that name. For in that transitory fire certainly sins, though not capital or criminal,….are cleansed. (Lyon # 23, Denz 456)

In his dread of those more serious misfortunes, the speaker disregards this life which causes him to weep and groan with its misery, and makes his entreaty: Rebuke me not, O Lord, in thy indignation [Psalms 38:1]. Let me not be among those to whom thou wilt say: Depart into everlasting fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels [Matthew 25:41]. Nor chastise me in thy wrath [Psalms 38:1]. Do thou cleanse me in this life and make me such that I shall have no need to pass through the purifying flames prepared for those who will be saved yet so as by fire [1 Corinthians 3:15]. Why? Is it not because in this world they are building upon a foundation of wood, hay, stubble? If they constructed with gold, silver, precious stones, they would be safe from both kinds of fire, not only from the everlasting fire which will torment the wicked forever and ever, but also from that which will purify those who are to be saved by fire. For we are told: He himself shall be saved, yet so as by fire [1 Corinthians 3:15]. And because of the phrase shall be saved, that fire is not taken seriously enough. Clearly, although they will be saved by fire, yet that fire will be more grievous than anything a man is capable of bearing in this life.
Augustine: Discourse on Psalms (Enarrationes in Psalmos) 37.3
English translation from Ancient Christian Writers, Vol. 30, page 330-331
While Augustine did not use the word purgatory he distinguished two kinds of fire, the everlasting fire that will torment the wicked forever and the purifying fire.
